hi my friend mondays are going to be beautiful we have lots and lots of halloween or fall inspired things for august i'm pat sloan and we are starting out with bats and booze which is a free block a week or a section a week mystery sew along that the fat quarter shop is running and i'm sewing along with them kimberly will be doing a video at their fat quarter shop youtube page so if you want to see a video about it you can go over there and watch so let me show you the first block of bats and boo like b-o-o not stuff you buy at the liquor store okay here it is here are my bat blocks and you were going to be doing four bats and i want to show you the fabric that i collected up because i did not buy the kit there was a gorgeous kit that they're working from and they had to make some substitutions on a few of them because on you know they wanted to make more kits but they couldn't get the exact fabric again and we also had to wait a really long time for the fabric so some of you will have a little bit different if you got the kit there's like maybe two or three versions but i want to show you what i'm sewing with because i'm not using the kit at all i'm using other fabric so just take a look down here you're going to go to my website where you get the link to download the pattern for today set that over there all right bats and boo boo boo so you have the outer wings of the bat and then there is a sort of corner fabric which is also done in black blacks and gray so this is dark and that's what you want to think about the wings and the bat ears are dark so they're black and then i picked a gray now this gray that i have actually has some little bats in it now the other fabrics that i picked for this sew along so here they are here's the the black dot that i use and if i if i can find them i'll link them at my website i think some of them are still around some of them came from my stash like this one came from my stash but it might still be around now here's the lightning bolts which is what my wings are here's this little funky bat pattern and then you're going to need some orange and i just pulled some other orange that i have i think these two i think all of these might still be available maybe not that one but i don't know i'm gonna link i'm gonna go link it so i picked these oranges i think you only need one but i don't know which i'm gonna use until i see it and then this is the blossom that i picked for my background which has orange and black dots and i also got this black and white plaid so i'm not sure where that's going to go either but i i had a nice big section of it so i just kept it in the grouping so this week you're going to make four bats for this sew along and then every monday this month we will have a new section until we get our mystery quilt so cute okay the other project that we're doing is the spooky sampler with melissa mortison my buddy melissa so here is this quilt and we're going to do the next section i want to talk to you about this one a second because a few of you have mentioned that you don't really decorate for halloween halloween's not your holiday but you like fall so if you're doing this quilt and you want to make it more fall colors you could do everything about it it's just if you don't want the hats and the little ghosts a little ghost you could just still do more of those flags like this if you don't want the hats you could do more spider web blocks which is just a patchwork block uh same with the the bats can be more spider blocks that's what i would recommend and then the brooms if you are you know you could put churn dash blocks in there something like that if you didn't want that imagery on it but you wanted to follow along and of course the pumpkins at the bottom could be also substituted you could do a group of pumpkins up here for a fall quilt you could do them just this whole section could be pumpkins again and they could be down here so there's ways to play around with this if you didn't want to make it exactly halloween like but for those of us who love halloween and are doing it for that specifically we are excited about this now i did get the pillow done before we go on to the block i did get the pillow done so there it is i i just you know like i don't need to decorate with the pillow yet but what i had done i had to put it in the pillow the pillow form on the pillow so now it's now i have a halloween pillow sitting in my living room along with my flags and stuff that's okay it's all good all right now we're going to talk about making the next part for our spooky sampler so the spooky sampler this week we are going to make some mini pumpkins and some brooms let's look at the brooms first because they are so cute so so cute i could see these as a table runner where you could either do like a broom you know going like like two different ways here we go like as a table runner like put them sort of like that then maybe you put a little pumpkin on the bottom of each one or of course you know these are going in the sampler quilt then you also have the little mini pumpkins which i've got attached the top part of them and here again you can play around with fussy cutting if you're on instagram or facebook melissa did in her stories uh how to fussy cut and i think she also did that at her blog so there so and she talked about this the other day that this was inspired by a halloween costume of her little boy and when he was little he's not little anymore but you can see a picture of him in his costume at her website links are down below okay one more whoops ah here this let's look down here i can't get them apart and hold them okay so there's two of those and then two with the fussy cut of the images for the little mini pumpkins and then look the googly eyes show up again in the stems and we get to use the stripe for the leaves so i think those are pretty self-explanatory in the directions you're doing you know sew and flip and half square triangles and rectangles so that's that's pretty easy you should be able to handle that with no problem so i want to show you the broom and talk through the broom a little bit about how to make that because it is done with a little bit different technique melissa is so creative and i love how you can manipulate a pattern and make something very interesting by sometimes oversizing and then cutting down and that is the beauty of of quilting is there are so many different ways to approach something in bygone days you probably would have had templates to do this and then you would have you know hand sewn it or sewn it on your machine you cutting out from these templates but when you do the construction as she's as she's done it it's more fun and it's more forgiving in my opinion i think so anyway let me show you the fabrics so you can see them uh exactly what we're working with i just pulled the one for the one pumpkin uh but uh you've got a pumpkin i mean for the pumpkin for the broom so you have the cats here's the cats and then there's a little band on the broom come in here so there's a little band on the broom and that is with this dark purple and then the handle of the broom both handles are this charcoal here now this broom has the sort of damask i think it looks more like you know draw a drawing on it and the part here the little ribbon on the broom she did the same as the as the handle for this one but you could also do purple if you wanted to i think it looked cute either way okay now the key i think to doing the broom and being successful and having fun which is the ultimate having fun don't get yourself all wound up about things is to cut all the pieces for the broom first and know where they go so let me show you that because once you have that then you're just following her wonderful diagrams and it works out perfectly now i am using this gray here for my sample rather than the solid gray some other gray from my stash so that's what i'm using so when you follow the directions and cut out all the patterns pieces let me just get the broom down here too okay so you've got the broom what we're doing is on first of all here on this side is i have all the parts for the broom you have this section up here right and then the bigger piece which is this part of the broom and then down here are flying geese units that's what these two things are but then we end up putting this side piece on oversized we're gonna i'm gonna show it to you we're gonna sew it right sides together and then flip it over like that which will give you this angle uh you're actually gonna cut the angle i'm gonna show you but before you do that we're going to assemble this in this sort of blocky shape and where this is afterwards so you'll repeat for making this angle you'll just do a similar thing for this strip that goes here but i'm going to show you this part of just the bottom part of the broom what you have are two flying geese units so there they are little flying geese units and you are going to take to have the darker part at the bottom and the orange goes against the broom to make a whole broom unit so i'm going to sew these together and then sew this to this and that will make this whole section of the broom and after that we'll be cutting it in order to put the sides on just so you know that filming and sewing don't always create the best combination i went right from showing you this over to the sewing machine and sewed the flying geese on upside down so jack and i have a little date and we'll be right back okay this is better this looks like the bottom of the broom all right let's see i'm going to show you the process and melissa has all the exact directions on how to do this in your pattern but you're basically prepping this shape so that you can put side units on it so that your broom will end up like this guy ta-da so here you see i've got the broom section okay so this is the unit here that we're working on we're just working on the bottom part not from the ribbon up that's another piece you'll build so to build this she has you find the center of the block so you can just press it on the center and then you're measuring a distance from the edge i mean from the center on both sides so that you have a working outline or working spot so i'm going to measure there and then i'm going to take from that spot i'm using a iron away marker to do this pull it back get a little closer for you so i'm using the iron away marker because this is going to be in the seam allowance anyways i'm going to cut it i'm just making a line to cut with so i have from the i want to go right from the corner because you know i want that shape like this for the bottom of the broom and i will mark one side and then i'll go on the other side and find my mark which was over here the red was in the red okay so i have the two parts that i now cut off and when i'm cutting it i am not going to cut on this outside over i feel like i have more control if all of the shape is under the ruler so i'm going to put it like this i will take my ruler and the mark is not necessary but i just feel like it helps you visualize that you know that you're in the right spot and you don't cut it incorrectly so i'm going to cut off that side and then i will flip it put the whole broom under my ruler again and take from the point to the mark that i had and make the other side so this is my broom shape as you can see from let's get you out here okay so there's the broom shape right and now it's a matter of sewing putting the broom on one of these which when i sew that seam it'll come out like this and then i'll end up with the other one on this side there we'll just get him out of there so i'll have the other one on that side and then trim it to what the final piece is supposed to be so these are a little bit oversized that way you have working room for getting the final end of the broom so let me sew these two sides on here and show you how to trim it so the two sides are now on here you can see what it looks like just laid it down and sewed it on both sides so you're going to be trimming to the sides that she has and you'll be centering up through the um through the middle of the broom so that both sides will be the same you don't want to be just start trimming like this because then the broom won't be too long or too wide on one side so you want to be right in the center of your of your ruler following the measurements that she's given you and you'll be trimming along the bottom and then trimming along the top whoops not that top the top of the uh of the broom here you know like i was going on the bottom which was an easy mistake and you can see it doesn't go all the way up and that's not what we want to be doing so it'll be trimming wide along the top of this guy and i'm just going to get that so it's workable for me and now what i'll be doing is getting the rest of the shape and trimming off the sides so that i'll center this with so i'll center this and then trim off the sides and we'll have a broom the next part you will do is exactly the same process as her directions for getting this angle on the top part of the broom and so i'm going to go red and make the rest of my broom as i went to do my broom you'll see i decided to change the handle because the original broom handle was quite dark which was great against that solid gray but for this fabric that i'm using that broom handle just doesn't show up it fades into that color too much so i just swapped it out so as i'm making each week you know i'll do an extra demo piece and i'll see what i'm going to do with all these extra blocks i'll probably end up putting them all together in some sort of small wall hanging i think that would be fun and they'll all use this darker one now i may have to make an extra star since i used my star over there for the pillow for the first one so many choices and i didn't make an extra pumpkin so i don't know what i'll end up with these we'll see we'll see what happens so what else is going on it is august which means i'll be doing the next monthly markings so i have to get out the august one so i can do that i kept up really well and i filled in that extra part that was missing and i want to remind those of you who are interested in cross stitch that august 23rd starts cross stitch university the links are below so that you can join in for learning how to cross stitch or getting back into cross stitching or just sewing this super cute block or super cute cross stitch has the little house you can make it into a little quilt or a pillow or frame it whatever you want to do so that is coming at the end of march and there are cross stitch university t-shirts and there's a tote of a zippy bag to keep everything in it's just so cute so links are below and while you're there subscribe so we can be friends the charms one charm quilt that i did from my friend cheryl's book is off to the spa i decided no more borders just do it as it is and cindy and dennis have it and we were looking for a cool quilting pattern that would kind of keep that diagonal flow and so cindy found one and i saw i can't wait to see it it's going to be awesome just awesome okay what else do we have oh yes so the calendar for the month can be downloaded from my website and i have a cute few little holiday things you know like you know every day of the year you can just do um holiday of the day you know something like that you can just go search it and there's always like at least one thing somebody celebrates on every day so i always have been picking a couple of fun ones i i don't always remember to talk about them sorry occasionally i've forgotten to talk about them but i try i try and sometimes they roll into the theme of the day which is fun then remember on the calendar the second part has uh our sew alongs current so longs we're in a sort of busy we're in a busy fun so a long phase right now there's quite a lot going on here um and a lot of a lot of sewing i had i think four or five projects like literally on my table right now like on this design table there are about five projects so this is nuts so let me uh i'm gonna i'm gonna move the camera down here i don't know if you're gonna we're gonna be able to do it but we've got two halloween i've got the cross stitch i've got the liberty box and then my sewing machine and then on the back side i'm not going to be able to get all the way over there but on the other side over there are the um the red white and blue squares so that is what is going on on my table it's like it's nuts nuts nuts so i decided to just go ahead and use my project completion for august as the same as the july paperwork and i still so i want to work on see if i can get working on any of these four during august i'm just going to keep the same sheet of paper makes it easier i probably should redo that paper so that but but you know like when you create it once and it's already there it's like it's low on my list to go make a different one very low on the list now the other thing i said i was going to do was go to the liberty the liberty box this super darling quilt and get this cut so that i can be sewing it while i'm doing the other things oh the crumb blocks are the other thing that's on my desk right now my my table and my sewing so i've got the stars and here's what i did as i decided for this one i think i mentioned that this is how i was going to do it i was going to cut everything at once and i think i'm going to use the one that the basket of blooms i think they'll keep this in the same container as the basket of blooms because that one's moving along and i can kind of work on them at the same time so what i did was these uh little design boards will fit right in the containers in these aqua containers that i use so i will just put this in the basket of the blooms container so i went ahead and cut all of these pieces i still have two squares and the backgrounds to cut and what i was doing for a couple of the cuts and i'll show you this with the cut off pieces is that i sort of measured off there was one that we had this one you have to cut a lot of squares so what i did is i measured the the depth and then just took a strip so that i can put this into my crumb blocks and then the same was for the other side so that that was what was left afterwards after i cut all of these this was left so i have two of these very usable strips rather than cutting a strip and having small you know like a half an inch chunk up here you know this gave me more usable crumbs just by thinking through it so what i did is i cut this bigger unit out and you know from and took the extra discard you know discard for the crop of the string blocks then i had this over here was full and i cut all these squares and had that so it's a little bit of a thought process for i mean if you're not used to doing that you're not used to thinking through how to make your extras a little bit more efficient a little bit more usable that's what i've been doing with these when i'm starting to get them to pre-cut them okay what else do we go through everything i think we did imagine that we've done everything oh my goodness no we haven't done everything for the basket of blooms i have the little border around the outside little scallop border so i have to get those cut i'm working on the cream color one with those units and then i have to do the scallop part and also on my um from the accu quilt when i had those blocks with the beach bathing suit fabric in it i went and got the dye out the other day the two there's three dies i used and i started cutting up the rest of them so i can do 12 blocks of that and basically they're all going to be the same fabric rather than making it scrappy so i thought oh that's good so it'll be a nice size quilt when it's done 12 blocks i'll do some sort of sashing and then maybe use my morrison park blue polka dot you know blue stripe with polka dots on it as a border or maybe i'll use the beach fabric as a border since i have lots of yardage of that all right the last thing last thing is on tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m eastern over at facebook i will be hosting what is a new feature on the facebook groups and it is called audio live and it's basically a podcast a radio show however you want to think about it it's it's a live audio and i'll be talking to jane davidson my friend from australia and i will also be talking to um rachel greger from the virginia quilt museum now i will be it will be taped so afterwards i should have if it all goes well i'll have the tape so you can listen the other thing is my facebook group now is open to the public you no longer have to be a member of facebook to come to my community page now you may try to come and it doesn't work for you that means you need to change devices or change browsers do something to get you there it's a fairly new thing it only happened on saturday so if it's glitchy try back in another day or so because sometimes those kind of big changes they take a little while to sort of roll through but you should just like my kitchen group that is also open all the links are down below you can get them down there so if you are not on facebook and you know and you want to come see what the community is like you can come the major levels will be able to listen to the interviews that i'm doing on tuesday at 4 pm you can either listen live or you can wait for the recording but i'd love if you were live that's a lot of fun so it's been quite exciting and to be asked by facebook to be part of this initial group of 25 different group owners who are doing the audio lives so exciting exciting stuff all right my friend you are going to make bats bats today and you will make brooms where's my room okay you make brooms and mini
