this video is sponsored by squarespace [Music] hey guys in today's video i'm going to be reviewing seven different trends that are quite popular in the studygram studytube communities and letting you know whether i think they are overrated or adequately rated in the amount of hype they are receiving if you are interested in one product in particular be sure to check out the description for some time stamps without further ado let's get started [Music] the first trend we're going to be discussing in this video is the ipad pro now there's no doubt that this very expensive tablet is a useful tool for browsing the web taking notes and doing digital art but i'm going to be doing this sort of rating review based on what the expectations have been set by the hype surrounding this in the study gram community and i would definitely say that with a combination of a good stylus such as the apple pencil and a screen protector like the paper-like screen protector it offers a very pleasant writing experience if you're not really into writing experience and all that fun stuff i think this would be a fantastic substitute for pretty much all of your notebook and textbook annotation tools but if you're like me and you love the feeling of writing with a pen on paper it's not even close to replicating the experience of course take this review with a bit of a grain of salt because you might know that i am a stationary fiend but if you're not as picky maybe you won't find these issues with the ipad pro this is the main reason i'd say the ipad pro is overrated for the expectations set by the wider study gram and studytube community it's often hailed as this end-all be-all of digital note-taking something that can entirely replace all of your notebooks and textbooks and printed out papers and anything else that requires paper and i'm sorry to say that it really does not the writing experience just isn't the same and besides feeling different in a very tactile way i find that i can't write quite as quickly on an ipad pro as i can on pen and paper it takes me a little bit more effort to form my letters in order to keep them neat and as a result i have to write quite a bit slower which can be a problem in faster paced lectures despite everything i said earlier i still love using this device and i don't regret buying it but that's because i had different expectations for it than the overall hype in this community i mostly use it for digital art and for annotating documents and within those purposes it's been an absolute life saver since i can just download my readings and annotate them in good notes instead of having to print them out and waste paper for the specific hype around it being a digital note taking god send i'd say it's overrated [Music] the next item that has been making its rounds on studygram is mini printers like this one i have one from pula print but i've also heard of other brands such as foam faux memo fomemo and canon these are little tiny printers that print using thermal ink technology which is meant to sound fancy in advance but it's really just what they use to print receipts in cash registers and at the very least these printer products are not a scam they do actually do the job they're meant to do and they do them quite well i was pleasantly surprised at the print quality of my little pool of print printer now full disclosure i got this one for free and i've enjoyed fiddling around with it but if i had paid the full 70 to 100 price tag i would be pretty disappointed like yeah it's kind of cute but it's so unnecessary especially for this price tag but if you have the 70 just lying around to spend on one of these you might as well just get an actual printer since that would allow you to print in full color since the thermal printers can only do black and white and you can get a higher resolution and with a real printer it costs less to maintain than one of these mini printers because you know on a real printer you can just print with regular paper or regular sticker paper which is much cheaper than the refill rules for a little tiny printer so yeah these are definitely overrated [Music] now let's move on to some stationery and we're going to start off with the zebra mildliners from a purely quality standpoint yeah these are kind of overrated like they're decent highlighters they're pretty good they're in a good middle ground between being too dry but having low bleed through or being nice and liquidy but having a lot of bleed through they also come with a little marker end which is quite useful for doodling and journaling the dark colors do tend to be a bit more problematic with their level of bleed through but overall i'd say the line is pretty good just not the world's most magnificent perfect highlighters ever but let's go back to the concept of the expectations being set by the study gram community these highlighters are hyped up because they come in a lot of cute colors not because they're some sort of masterwork of stationary engineering and yes indeed the colors are beautiful stunning never been done before in the realm of highlighters they're the only highlighters that i use because i would sacrifice anything for the aesthetic overall i'd say these are adequately rated [Music] on a related note next product we'll be discussing is the zebra mildliner brush pen these are only popular because they are riding on the coattails of their fabulous older sibling the mildliner highlighters let's be real here they could never pull this off on their own because they are just not that good and not that unique as i mentioned earlier i love the mildliner color range and they're definitely an innovation in the pastel highlighter realm but pastels have been done over and over again in the brush pen range so they're not really unique in that aspect and then we move on to their quality which is not great in my opinion the tips are too stiff and too dry which i guess you could argue is okay for beginners since something that is stiffer and drier tends to be a little bit easier to control but i still wouldn't recommend these for beginners because they fray way too easily not to flex but i've been doing calligraphy for five years so i know what i'm doing i know how to avoid fraying brush pens and these frayed way faster than any other brand of brush pen i've used so if you were a beginner who hadn't yet learned how to control the pressure on a brush pen it would be way too easy to ruin these pens i haven't exactly been nice in my reviewing of these products both in this video and in my stationery reviewing video that i will link in the cards but i'm still keeping them and using them simply because i've already bought them so i might as well use them but i wouldn't recommend you go out and spend your money on these unless you've got some sort of compelling government interest in matching your mildliner colors to your brush pens or something so overall definitely overrated [Music] the next item we're going to discuss is a bit of a pronunciation journey i'm going to do my best here but my swedish followers please feel free to correct me in the comments we're going to be discussing the field konken backpack now i am fully convinced that this brand is not just another instagram fast fashion trendy type of brand these bags are built durably and they're built to last the company uses production methods and materials that aim to reduce waste and they've committed themselves to environmental and worker welfare which is why the bags cost so much the brand does a lot of work for sustainability and for preservation of the environment i'll link a video from the youtube channel our changing climate about the brand if you'd like to learn more about a their environmental efforts and b how that contributes to the price being a little bit high i find that it's worth a little bit extra of my money to support a brand that works towards sustainability in these ways you know if you're interested it'd be even better to buy a second hand because it'll cost a lot less and it's more sustainable to buy a second hand i don't think i can authoritatively speak to the general hyped up use of this bag as a school backpack i have the mini version and i kind of use it as a purse but not a purse rather than using it for carrying my books and supplies around a campus therefore i can't fully evaluate how comfortable it is for carrying a lot of school supplies for a long period of time but for the time that i have used it for a smaller amount of items but for a long period of time it's pretty darn comfortable also aesthetically i found it's pretty attractive for the past five years so it's not just a fad it's a pretty timeless look in my opinion you know how when you've looked at too many different backpacks and they're all okay looking but kind of bland and they all start to blend together something about that slightly ugly utilitarian look just adds spice makes it stand out and i just like the way it looks take my verdict with a grain of salt but i'd say it is adequately rated [Music] next up is the full line of kokuyo campus products which includes their loose leaf paper notebooks and binders i'll just come right out and say i have been standing this product line since day one and anyone who wants to come for it you're about to catch these i don't i'm too non-confrontational but i really like these products i too was kind of reluctant because they're kind of expensive but once i tried out the paper at my internship at jetpens there was no going back the kokuyo campus loose leaf paper in the sarasara line is the smoothest loose leaf paper i have ever had the pleasure of laying my hands onto not only is it smooth and nice which prevents it from damaging the brush pens and markers that i use it's also surprisingly resistant to bleed through without being super thick i've never had any products bleed through to the other side except a sharpie and there's no real issues with show through on the other side either even with my darker colored mildliners besides the a plus paper quality another huge selling point in my opinion is the dotted line rule which is basically a combination of dot grid with ruled lines running through it this pattern is really useful for note taking it makes it easy to organize your information in tables or just generally keep it vertically aligned everything i just said also applies to the notebooks which have the same paper quality and a lot of them also have the dotted line rule a lesser known portion of this product line are the binders i've tried two of the kokuyo campus binders which are the slide format and the notebook format they both work in a way where you just pull on a tab in order to make the rings open which is honestly a lot less stressful than the aggressive pulling apart and loud clanking of a traditional binder y'all have been watching me for a long time might remember that i like this paper and the notebook binder style so much that i put them in my collab set with jetpens they are most definitely adequately rated and possibly underrated last but not least let us discuss the muji gel pens the ones that are like a clear plastic cylinder i don't actually own any of these pens anymore so i'll just put a picture on screen the ink is fairly smooth enough i guess i've only ever had one of them just completely stop working on me but there are two major issues that i cannot get over the first is that the ink takes forever to dry even the quite thin 0.38 millimeter ones if you like to take notes or bullet journal in the traditional aesthetic study gram way that includes quite a bit of additional doodling it's not going to work they smudge a lot when i use them with highlighters or even tried to erase pencil markings from behind them it is just not fun to use and my hand gets cramps i guess personal preference can vary but i just don't see how a plain plastic cylinder is ergonomic to anybody and the ink refill is a weird length and size so i can't even swap it into a more comfortable pen body for the kind of high price tag of a dollar and fifty cents you can most definitely get pens that are just as smooth and pleasant to write with but without these two glaring flaws overall i would say these are overrated i hope you enjoyed this video of my hot takes on these popular products please be civil in the comments and remember that these are just products i am not attacking you if you have a different opinion from me on these products i don't think you're wrong or misinformed if you have a different opinion for me on these they're just that opinions one product
