welcome back i am john p today we are going to be talking about whether or not zen watches are good xin is a brand that has gained so much popularity in the recent years especially with watch collecting becoming more popular and it makes sense there are some really great reasons why people are gravitated towards these zen watches but additionally there are some reasons why zen watches may not be right for you i'm going to be sharing with you the pros and cons of zen watches in just one second but before we do that of course on the wrist today seiko rowing blazers rally diver uh limited edition collaboration watch as well as the matching hat with the seiko name and it says rowing blazers on the back this is kind of my beach watch i uh i love it it's super cool super fun and uh it's just nice i just like the style and the aesthetic very nice strap as well in terms of the color so that's what i'm wearing and guys please do not forget to check out delraywatch.com where we have so many cool watches including some very rare high-end cartier watches tourbillon watches some mosers in stock and some tutors we have we had we brought in so many tudor black bays in the last week it's it's pretty astounding so if you are in the market for that please check out delraywatch.com and you can find me on instagram the real john p so zin zinn watches as a company who are they where do they come from now zin is a very new company they were founded in the early 1960s by a man with the name zinn right his last name was zin and he started this company to be producing precision instruments and they would handle a lot of contract manufacturing right so they would make contract watches and they'd make instruments for um different types of vehicles and for the time keeping right and that's what they would do based in germany and eventually the company kind of transitioned it brought on a new owner the new owner decided to go more to the authorized dealer and build out a collection model so in 1994 the company was sold to a person that is running it and the way that they ran it was to be more in line with all the other watch companies that were succeeding out there the rolexes of the world the omegas where you had that uh you know the authorized dealer distribution chain model where you'd have a proper collection and you'd have your own branding with the zen name on it and that's exactly what they did they built out the collections they built up the chronographs all the models out there the dive watches they focused on the tooling precision instruments because that is of course where they came from but the interesting thing to note is they only reach about 12 000 pieces in terms of sales today so putting that into perspective rolex sells you know maybe over just over 1 million it's rumored just over 1 million watches per year but a micro brand a smaller limited production micro brand might only sell about a thousand so they're much more in terms of volume than a new micro brand that just came out you know a year ago perhaps but compared to you know behemoths like a rolex or let's say a seiko for example they're much smaller more nimble able to hit the market with models quicker develop products a little faster in response to feedback from watch collectors out there on the internet and kind of handle their business that way and of course they are based out of germany so they they'll use swiss movements um but the watches are produced for the most part most of their models in germany with that german heritage and perspective that you can see in certain products out there in the market now the pros and cons i think first we need to talk about these watches and the cases they have a case manufacturer called sug that's a joint partnership with zinn as well as um the people that were behind the company called fricker if you've been a long time watch collector you go on the watch forums there was a time within the last decade that there were these german watch brands that would use swiss movements but these german cases by this case manufacturer called fricker that produced these very high quality cases much in line with what you see from zinn and we had those people that partnered up with the people over at zinn that now run this case manufacturer and they use these cases in the zen watches and so this s-u-g glass shoots a case manufacturer based in germany they all they focus on is producing the highest quality cases that they can with the best engineering rugged uh and durability that's what they do that's all they do that's all the company focuses on is the case and so when we look at a watch that's going to retail from zen anywhere between one thousand dollars to maybe upwards of five thousand depending on the model but that's their range they they work in we're talking about really some of the best cases you can get in this range because there's a company that focuses on just producing the best cases and they use this now if you haven't heard of this and you're a die-hard zin collector or you love the brand or maybe you're just curious there's a web page or there's a page on the website of zinn where they actually explain the sug case manufacturer how it works and a lot of the stringent and extreme testing they put their designs through so i think that's interesting if you are curious to check that out on their website now the next thing that zinn offers as a pro is with the cases they offer this special tejamented steel they have this kind of submarine steel that they use in some of the watches that make it really rugged and durable once again touching back on the cases but that's not the only technology that they offer that's unique and interesting at especially this price point which is a recurring theme and it's not made in any way the comments are not made in any way to kind of take away from the watch but really show how much value you get is they actually have the a technology that detects moisture and pulls it out of the watch they have these modules that you see in some of the watch cases that will turn a color blue when water is detected and pull the moisture out of the watches typically with a watch when it gets wet there's moisture you might see some fogging on the interior of the crystal or maybe you see nothing and it contributes to damage over time inside the watch but zinn went above and beyond and they put in this capsule that will actually pull and detect the water you can replace the capsule but some people actually buy these little metal caps and just kind of cap over that crystal instead of putting that functionality or that feature in that now there's plenty of videos on youtube where it kind of shows you this technology but i think that is just so cool to have in a watch that's made to be rugged durable and to be exposed to the elements and that's something you really don't get from any other watch manufacturer now additionally a pro of zin is going to be the movements they use workhorse proven movements many people look down on using etta movements or solida movements or 7750 and they say these are not in-house movements they're not producing these these movements they're not a true you know watch company there are people that say that you know the purists things like that but the reality is when we're talking about a watch that needs to be rugged durable consistent reliable why would you not choose the most reliable movement right um if these movements have been used for decades and proven over time in millions of watches out there why do we want to reinvent the wheel sure maybe we want to do something just to say we did it but if the ultimate goal is to produce the most consistent reliable rugged durable watch why not use the thing that has already been manufactured by movement manufacturers that sought out to and strive to produce the most reliable accurate movements that's my opinion but what do you think about this uh feel free to leave that in the comments below and in the comment section we also will talk about the movements because unfortunately it does unfortunately rub some people the wrong way now what's also great another pro of zen watches is that the watches are consistent across the board you get a thousand dollars in watch the quality is going to be about the same i haven't seen any major differences than a zinn watch for five thousand dollars they use the same metals unless of course you opt out and you up or opt in for a different metal when they're tejamented or fully tedumented bottles right and they do have occasional precious metal watches but not often but everything for the most part case construction dials it's all comparable across the board that's something you don't see from every watch brand right some watch brands think of like tag hoyer for example you get one of their thousand dollar watches it's not gonna be even close to their ten thousand dollar watches and it makes sense but zinn manages to pull this off right so that's something they focus on and i really like and enjoy that aspect about it because you buy ones in watch you feel good about it you like it you buy another totally different model you don't have to wonder is this watch any good if you like the other one you can rest assured that it will be the same and last the prices are more than reasonable i think in terms of luxury goods today looking at some of the watch brands raising their prices all time desirabilities all-time highs in terms of sale prices on watches zen watches are very reasonable for what you get and what they offer in their target market and segment i think it's extremely difficult to beat them for the offerings that they have and the prices are more than reasonable if not great for the quality of watch that they do deliver what do you think about that leave that in the comments below now overwhelmingly i will say that zen watches are pretty great it's difficult to beat them in their price segment and sometimes even higher than their price price segment to be quite honest with you but the reality is there are some cons that just need to be talked about there are some things that maybe some people will not like about them it might make a zin watch not right for a certain type of collector and we just need to touch on that because it is the reality of the situation sometimes now the first thing of course is the branding some people just want a watch that has a more noticeable brand right some people may be drawn to a particular lifestyle or particular feeling that the brand conveys and that's how products work right that's marketing that's how it just works for the most part and while zinn is notable in the niche watch collecting world they're not on unfortunately they're just not notable outside of that world and so if someone does want to watch that that's going to get noticed by people as a luxury good it's just not going to happen personally that's not really for me i like to wear and enjoy truly whatever i like and i'm gravitating towards so that's not a negative for me but for some people that want that patek philippe on the dial or they want that rolex on the dial or they want someone to notice the case shape of their audemars piguet royal oak it's just not going to happen but that could be a positive for someone so typically someone may consider that to be a con now additionally some people might consider that the movements are not finally decorated some of the movements are sufficiently decorated some of the watches you can see the movements over the course of history maybe some not so much but the reality is they don't put a lot of time and energy for the most part into decorating the movements it's not what they focus on and i understand that for them to deliver great tool watches why would they put time and effort into hand finishing uh you know giuse dials and well i think they actually do have a giga shade dial but in terms of finishing in the overall watches and putting coast agenev and you know prolage on the movements um they're not just going to do that it doesn't really make sense for the type of watches that they generally are producing i get it but some people really want to have that finely decorated movement or maybe the more sophisticated dial as i mentioned with the gyosha so it could be a con for you right i i think it really is a cost-saving measure and it delivers a better value at the price point but some people may think that's a con and it's something for you to consider also a lot of the watches are just bigger one of the reasons i currently don't have a zin is the last zin that i purchased it was a chronograph unfortunately it was just too thick now it's a 7750 belgium 7750 chronograph movement so there's only so much that can be done but the reality is i felt that the watch was a little bit thicker than it needed to be to house the movement and it was just too big of a watch for me personally with my wrist size to wear now i know this is a bigger watch which is why i don't wear it every day but if you do have a smaller wrist let's say under seven inches going closer towards the six inches in circumference zinn sport watches are just larger right they do have a smaller size in some other watches but overall they produce larger chunkier rugged durable watches so some people that are more gravitating towards the small ones or smaller sizes more classic sizes may have a difficult time with most of the offerings from the brand and lastly this one is also a con of the brand is if you like gold watches or precious metals or platinum things of that nature they don't have a lot of offerings they have some two-tone offerings and some of the the more feminine watches they also have two-tone offerings paired with things like mother of pearl dials but while zinn has offered watches that have come in gold in the past they don't really have a large selection of these watches today so if you're looking for you know a gold dive watch uh or a gold chronograph they really are not focused on that per se um so it can be difficult if uh you know to really consider them as a brand if you're more into the um you know the flashier the showy or more uh i guess you'd call them precious metal focused or centric uh watch models out there like a brand like rolex offers but overall i think you know in terms of zen watches if we had to give it a final stamp are they good i would say absolutely they are good if you're looking for a rugged durable reliable some might even say no frills watch that's truly been proven and tested and it's going to be some of the best in class at price point sport watch instrument watch that you really can find zinn makes an amazing watch now it does have some things that maybe makes the brand not attractive to everyone but i think if you fit into their focus and their target customer segment of watch collectors it's really difficult to beat a zen watch what do you guys think are there any zin collectors out there i know i'm going to receive so many comments because once again this brand seems to have such a strong cult following and i love to see it and hear it in the comments below guys please do not forget to thumbs up
