what's up hacksters today we're going to take a quick look at the arduino maker wi-fi 1010 the microcontroller at the heart of the new arduino opla iot kit which we reviewed in a previous video see below on the surface the maker 1010 wi-fi which comes as part of the kit appears much the same as the previous maker 1000 board which came in a similar form factor and also had wi-fi as well as a lipo charging circuit but it's a little bit beefier so let's take a look from the outside we can see our seal of authenticity and a few of the specs including its wifi connectivity the chip which is an apt md21 48 megahertz clock 256 kilobytes of flash 32 kilobytes of sram usb spy i squared c i squared s and uart interfaces we have 5 volt and 3.3 volt input and operating voltages which is pretty standard and then 22 digital pins a generous 12 pwm pins with which you can run things like ws2812 led strips like neopixels as well as servos and seven analog pins inside our board is well protected on its little piece of foam here little welcome document and as usual the classic arduino stickers this one has come with headers pre-assembled and with beautiful labeling for all the pins on the sides making it possible to read the pins easily even if you have it mounted on another board or with a shield on top they are also labeled on the bottom here you have the lipo connector which will charge your connected battery as long as you're connected to usb and then will automatically switch off to battery power when you unplug there is a built-in programmable rgb led a step up from your classic pin 13 blinky and this module over here from u-blox is pretty interesting you can find the link to this page in the description below so this is designed as the easiest point of entry to basic iot and pico network application design actually i haven't heard this from pico network before it's quite cute whether you're looking to build a sensor network connected to your office or home router for example with the opla kit uh or if you want to create a ble device sending data to a cell phone the maker wifi 1010 is your one step solution for many of the basic iot application scenarios and there's a video from massimo okay so this is designed to work with the iot cloud from the bottom up which is an exciting system that allows you to build your own dashboards as well as managing your iot devices from a centralized location you can use the official arduino wi-fi library or use one of these other compatible cloud services blink is a really cool one that enables you to build simple touch screen interfaces for example for controlling your house words with your phone if this then that is one of my favs it makes it really easy to set up automated interactions such as if i'm home then turn on this light or if it's monday at 10 am then water my plants or if someone pushes a button on this arduino then text me the aws iot core microsoft azure and firebase are other options but of course you're not even limited to those you've got bluetooth and ble and the built-in wifi nina module allows you to for example make use of both wi-fi and ble at once on the board which is kind of cool dual wielding protocols you could also have a super lightweight version of linux running on the module while the main microcontroller controls low-level devices like motors or screens that sounds really interesting but if you want to implement those then you might end up having to hack your wifi nina module which will void your certification there is a library for interacting with bluetooth and the maker wi-fi 1010 can be either a client or a host device they talk a little bit about the battery power but what i'm really interested in is how it differs from similar boards because as i mentioned it looks very close to this maker wifi 1000 that's been around for a while according to the page here the previous board can only run wi-fi applications as it includes a different chipset than the maker wifi 1010 also there's a nano 33 iot which i've played around with a little bit which is a smaller form factor than this board and in exchange for that you don't get your battery connector but otherwise it's pretty much the same plus of course you've got your arduino uno wi-fi rev 2 which is your classic shaped arduino and it has an embedded accelerometer which is pretty cool it's going for 45 bucks interesting the maker wifi 1010 goes for 32 dollars check out the tech specs and documentation in the tabs below as well as the faq and stay tuned for more about that opla iot kit which we're going to be playing with in the near future hack on [Music]
