hello everyone I am Betsy Peterson the director of the American Folklife Center here at the Library of Congress and on behalf of the staff and everyone here at the library I want to welcome you to the latest concert in our 2018 homegrown concert series here in the cool tranquil Coolidge auditorium where a wonderful escape from the horrible heat out there but today we've got a very special concert featuring the respected singer onek dinky on and his son ARA who are guests artists at the Smithsonian Institution's Folklife Festival this year and they will be joined by equally talented colleagues and friends but first a word about the homegrown concert series for those of you who don't know the homegrown concert series is designed to feature the very best of traditional musicians dancers storytellers and to do this the AFC staff works with a extensive network of talented dedicated folk arts coordinators cultural specialists ethnomusicologists throughout the country to identify the very best artists representing the most important and representative traditions to bring artists here to Washington DC to share their artistry and their traditions with you the performance today is going to be webcast so for the collections of the AFC archives so that others in the future will be also be able to hear this concert and you will be able to hear it again if you like but so with that said if you have a cell phone turned on right now or any electronic there advice please turn it off that would be great we would appreciate it and now I'd like to invite on stage Carolyn Rupp TV on who in her day job is the assistant director for education and museum programs at the National Museum of the American Indian but she's also right now curating the dance program for the 2018 Smithsonian Festival Armenian program and she'll be able to tell you a little bit more about the artist that you're going to be listening to and the traditions and the performance so please welcome Carolyn Rupp kayvyun [Applause] thank you very much I'm delighted to introduce the artist today Monique ding Chun is 88 years old and he remains America's most renowned Armenian folk and liturgical singer he has preserved Armenian folk songs from the villages of Anatolia in eastern Turkey especially in the unique dialect from his ancestral city of Diyarbakir known as de chronic heir to Armenians Oh Nik ding Shan is among the last few hundred people who speak this endangered dialect he was born in Paris France in 1929 to parents from dick Ronnie Garrett and he was orphaned at an early age he found comfort and happiness in singing initially in the Armenian Church of Paris upon arriving in America in the late 1940s he began performing at secular functions and quickly became the most loved singer of Armenian of the Armenian American community and he's released recordings of both secular and sacred Armenian music his fame as a great interpreter of Armenian song has brought him to concert halls throughout Europe the United States and South America in addition to his singing monique ding john has composed many songs some of which are sung in his native dialect onek son ARA ding Jian inherited his father's love and passion for Armenian music ara is american-born and plays both Western and Eastern instruments including piano guitar dumbek and clarinet in 1980 he graduated from the Heart College of Music earning the country's first and only special degree in the instrument for which he is come most well-known the food which is the predecessor of the loot the the European loot for over 40 years he served as an organist in the Armenian Apostolic Church throughout his musical life ARA has continued to develop his highly personal compositional style which blends his eastern and western roots in 1985 to help realize these compositions and musical concepts our afore miss highly acclaimed instrumental quartet night arc night arcs recordings and concert tours were highly influential for musicians and music lovers throughout the world because they demonstrated how music can be progressive and creative while still retaining the dignity and soul of one's culture for this concert Oneg and ara are joined by an an ensemble of outstanding instrumentalists tomorrow Pienaar Bashar is playing kanoon Ismael lumen offski is playing clarinet Pablo Vergara is playing keyboard and Engan Geun niden I got that right I think is playing percussion so some of you in the audience have heard onik saying for many decades some for some of you this will be your first time either way like to thank Carolyn and Thea and everybody at the Library of Congress for hosting us I was just talking to my father backstage saying dad did you ever think 70 years ago when you were singing hella hella that you'd wind up on the Library of Congress stage in this really historic stage if you read about this Coolidge auditorium stage it's it's really something it's really an honor to be here I'd also like to thank all of my fellow musicians I smile Tommen pablo and ND we'd like to thank John and the whole staff of engineers and lighting and everybody at the library we'd like to thank you for being here and and supporting programs like this and lastly I'd like to thank my father who completely unintentionally preserved a dialect and and a culture in this blessed country because frankly it was it was evicted from its homeland and my father didn't sing these songs with the intention of trying to preserve them he just sang them because he loved them and it's it's who he is and it's only later that he was told do you realize how precious it is what you've done so at the age of 89 to be singing these things here I congratulate you dad thank you [Applause] [Applause] thank you we have a be at the smithsonian festival tomorrow at the storytelling stage with carolyn talking about their lives in their music era will also be playing with the secret trio which is another smaller group he has on July 5th so you can catch them there if you at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the mall and next week if you come back on the 12th you will he be able to hear a fabulous Italian group from Boston called new Polly which is sort of Mediterranean music with a pulse or Italian music with a Mediterranean pulse that's how they describe themselves they're really great so thank you all for
