Always makes me nutty when Linus talks about server ops; even momentarily name-dropping using this thing as a NAS sounds like a nightmare I've actually had before where a client server without IPMI failed at a remote site. To say nothing of the fact that the damned thing won't even boot linux so no idea what kind of storage server it's supposed to be. Dude has like 6 million viewers and I know at least one of them is stupid enough to go do something about a server because he said so and that's so terrifying a concept.
Anyway- his review pretty much sums up my feelings on the state of Apple computers these days; Apple treats them like an afterthought used for developing iOS software and... that's about it. Considering you never know when Apple is going to totally stop refreshing a product of their stack for half a decade (or more) it's pretty disappointing what they've brought to bear doesn't even meet the minimum standard for high-end computing in the absence of a Mac Pro. Linus is right- this thing should really be called 'the Mac'.
Wish these had the 2400g in them instead. But, back to my 2009 with Vega in it.
Is it just me, or did he forget mITX form factor entirely?
I don't agree with this. I wouldn't buy a Mac, but tbis is extremely cost effective (compared to other Macs), extremely secure (T2), and pretty great perf better than any Apple laptop
Its like Apple looked at a Fractal Design Node 202 and thought 'how about we make this smaller and compromise almost everything else?'.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YczGRJ - My idea for an SFF Mac Mini competitor using off the shelf parts.
Super excited that they've thrown in a 10g ethernet option. Less excited about the overall price hike on all recent apple products.
side note: does this video look overly pink/magenta?
TL:DW: just buy a NUC 8 and install Mac Os on them, everything works except the Wifi/BT anyway
