things like of that nature but defensively a week ago they got after it it looked like a completely different defense nine sacks against South Carolina they really feel like they've got a good front it showed a week ago they'll be tested today against this mountainer rushing attack but m brown feels good about that side of the ball well it's interesting because that effort last Saturday night Taylor changed a lot of minds but one Tar Heel player in particular has been trying to change everybody's mind for a long time yeah guys if you didn't know the name Cayman Rucker before you certainly learned it when you watched UNCC football last week his two sacks 5 and 1 half tackles for loss really though came as no surprise to this North Carolina coaching staff defensive coordinator Jean chizik says he's the kind of guy that he has to tell at practice constantly to slow down because he only has one speed and that is Full Speed Ahead undersized at 61 and a half under recruited coming out of high school chis says Rucker is the prime example of that saying you are what you repeatedly do so now the question is can this North Carolina defense repeat that dominant performance they had last week only this week against appstate quarterback Joey agular making his first career start for the Mountaineers guys all right we'll get a look at Joey agular in an unbelievable story but quite frankly Ryan Berger went down with a finger injury late in the first half Joey agilar came in and was spinning it the rest of the afternoon for appalachin who won the toss and elected to defer and Carolina had an honorary captain joined them in Midfield for the coin toss and that is wide receiver TZ Walker whose ineligibility appeal was denied by the NCAA on Thursday we will talk more about Walker and his situation as the broadcast moves on but that Tim is a sidebar for North Carolina not just today but the rest of this campaign it is the rest of the campaign I think the coaches believe that he was you know a guy that was maybe going to be a 10 touchdown catch kind of player and so without him it obviously changes things I guess the the one thing is it's good to have some finality to it know what the plan is know if he's available or not which he's not but it is a big loss on the football field so the crowd at Keenan Stadium a sellout house who tailgated a little bit in the rain boy has ACC football been affected by the rain today at one point this afternoon there were four ACC games in a delay and by the way they're still waiting to play play about 3 and 1/2 quarters in blackburg where Virginia Tech and Purdue started at noon and are going to resume shortly after 6:00 so George pedway is deep to return for the Tar Heels and appalachin brings Michael Hughes to the football he went to head coach Shawn Clark's Alma moer George Washington High School in Charleston West Virginia Mountaineers and tar Hills in away we go from Keenan stadium and a fair catch call for and Carolina will scrimmage from its 25 yd line that was DJ Jones the converted running back who was back with pway on kick return and here is the red shirt sophomore from Myers Park High School in Charlotte Tim Drake May he's an unbelievable player Wes I'm excited to see him in person once again I think he's the best quarterback in college football I think he'll be the number one pick in the upcoming draft there really is not anything to dislike about his game he's an ascending player played well last week not perfectly but played well last week and I think a pretty good challenge today against a good app State Defense Marian Hampton will be the running back it is our understanding that British Brooks will not play today for Carolina he was their leading rusher last Saturday night in Charlotte you see the shotgun formation with May three receivers that's Kamari Morales in motion and right away we have a timeout called by Carolina prior to the delay of game timeout North Carolina that's their first charge timeout 30 second timeout m brown out to talk with one of referee Gary Patterson's colleagues that's head linesman Brian Perry he was talking with and look that's a surprise you know a lot of times teams will huddle on the sideline after a kickoff even if you're not a a huddle team I'm not sure if that ball just got put into play you know relatively quickly but that West did not seem well when we talk about may now we're talking about the reigning ACC Player of the Year first in completion percentage a year ago first in yardage first in touchdowns in the league Tim yeah and first in basically doing everything exactly how you want to do it how about arm strength he's getting zero Blitz that little pump fake left hand never even gets back on the football I mean that's like a kid in a swimming pool pump fakeing a tennis ball it's able to do it throwing a football but how about just the ability and Agility move the pocket drop the elbow down like Patrick Mahomes he's a great player out of the timeout Hampton's got five make it six on the first Carry before the middle linebacker Andrew Parker makes the stop for Appalachian State there's a look at the Arkansas transfer who started 10 games a year [Music] ago for Clark Mountaineers second down Carolina in a little Up Tempo moveing May going to take a shot on the second play of the game and that was underthrown he looked deep and that was JJ Jones in front of the M near bench it might have been deflected at the line of scrimmage yeah I think May's getting contacted as this Ball's coming out it's Spencer Rolland the the rolling the right tackle he just gets beat Inside by Shan Collins good Rush by Collins because they had a one-on-one opportunity down the field so here is third down and four for Carolina who hit eight of 13 last Saturday night in char they were nine of 14 a year ago at kid Brewer stadium in that wild 6361 game third down pressure coming out of the back field the catch is made and that's Kobe pesur and a first down to the [Applause] 39 gain of eight Ethan Johnson the stop for Appalachia Blackwell and pesur are the receivers to the near side or wide side as we look at it here's a throw and PES or turns and time for the ball to arrive and Brendan Harrington the linebacker makes the stop but it's close to another Tar Hill first down nine yds from May you know it's been talked about not as many rpos that's an RPO right there ball comes out good decision by may surprise pace for with the ball here's May FES the hand off again wants to look now the Deep shot for the Speedy Gavin Blackwell and he can't get there and there's a fly Tyreek thunderberg transfer from Richmond where he played 41 games for the spiders is going to be ticketed here pass it the defense number two 15yd penalty automatic first down we got a chance to talk to Drake May yesterday we asked him about Gavin Blackwell he said can go I just need to throw one that he can run underneath and they go to it early he did throw one and was Thunder book basically interfering to probably prevent the touchdown so first and 10 after the penalty ball to the 362 yd [Music] line9 going to pull and throw Morales can't hang on he was three4 four fists of the way to handing the ball to Hampton Tim and then fired it down field yeah looking like w Forest offense here with how long this mesh takes it's an RPO again ball in belly the back look at him rip it out of Hampton's belly say no no no I got my tight end running down the seam is one Morales has to come up with Morales 29 catches a year ago three last week in the opener in Charlotte May two of his first four quick throw to the near side this is Blackwell trying to spin away inside the 35 they'll measure it to the 32 Nick Ross is terrific for the Mountaineers number four in the white jersey a senior from Kell High School in marota Georgia Carolina coaches couldn't say enough about how much his game yeah he's all over the place 12 tackles last week and an active player pass to the football makes his 17th start for Appalachian State today here's the give and a strong run look at big Hampton fire away for a first down 220 lb sophomore am Marian Hampton and Wes you said it he hit this thing downhill look at this coming right at you it's a lot of power maybe even could have attacked on a face mask first and 10 Hampton will get the call again he'll take some white shirts with him inside the 20 near the 18 it'll be a pick up of four if you look at the the finish on this thunderberg gets his hand in there probably enough of a tug to Warrant a flag but man you can see it with Hampton if he gets an he's just able to not have you squared up get an angle on you he's going to run through arm tackles second down six for Carolina opening drive of the ball game here at Keenan Stadium he'll get another carry firing through was the safety Jordan favors he got a piece of hampon and then Santana Hopper finally made the play for the Mountaineers 10th play of the drive will be third and five and to me the two guys on third down are pesur and Nesbit two guys leave the points in the middle of the in the inside player on the bunch Elijah greens coming the ball again Carolina's hit their first two third Downs made a throw back across the middle caught pesur I believe in traffic going to be close to the first down we'll see oh no it's JJ Jones five not eight on the grab for the Tar Heels and here comes John copenhaver and amarian Hampton back into the lineup for m brown cop hav tight end that's an excellent blocker and May's going to be split out wide to the left here have a wildcat backfield so Hampton that's nesbet the tight end flexing back toward the formation Hampton will keep drive it did appalachin make the stop I think the Mountaineers did Brendan Harrington looped around and Shan Clark's team gets an early stop of Carolina here in Chapel Hill yeah and they should be excited about it with the way Carolina was running the football with the big powerful backs that is a huge stop when you think the tar Hills had something going on that initial Drive timeout at Keenan Stadium Carolina threatens but the Mountaineers shut the door and get the rock [Music] next greatness is a Feeling he is going to go Fearless Brotherhood greatness is more than winning the game it's changing it touchdown greatness is what we do accomplish [Music] greatness here's a wild idea make today epic go on dig in and you'll see it's wild what you and a real Kodiak breakfast can [Music] do with College Football on ESPN plus you get the best teams and the biggest conferences and so much college football action from across the country so sign up now at espm plus.com appalachin gets the to stop on Downs Mountaineers take over at their own 14 Joey agular making his first start on a bootleg throw and it is caught by Deshawn Davis at the Carolina 35 but Carolina missed on fourth down yeah between these three players here watch Spencer rollin's going to block down and when that happens tight end's got to go with him he doesn't and because of that got got Dingle Prince number 50 gets in the backfield and they should be excited on that App State sideline yeah the former old offensive guard for Jerry Mor John Clark now in his fifth year in Boon and he knows how big that stop was early in the game agular hands to the dangerous Nate noell sto at the 37 gain of two Joey agular is one of those guys Tim you hear about you kind of say Okay when's he get his chance well he got his chance last week got his chance last week and you know they felt like it was a good quarterback competition coming out of camp but thought that Ryan Berger won the job in the last scrimmage but last week he played out outstanding in relief and honestly he's off to a good start with that throw he had on first down yeah he's H his first pass for 21 yds second down and eight after the two-y run there's a slant and catch and in and that's Davis one more time Deshawn Davis had six catches 72 yds and a touchdown last year against the heels and Boone Giovani Biggers The Tackle at the 49 there and agular is two for two and how about this an in-breaking route just go ahead and put it right into the chest of your wide receiver that is perfect but Joey agel appalachin goes two to the boundary three to the field here on First and [Music] 10 quick throw on the perimeter juggled and caught Davis he's got three catches already close to another AB State first [Music] down oh no that's Noel five that not six bis I've seen three passes but I'm tell you Joey ago looks comfortable look at how this Ball's out in surprises Noel like I I don't know I mean for a kid who's making his first start with this school and right off the bat he looks comfortable yep second and less than a yard Noel left side first down and more inside the 30 down inside near the 20 yd line and a flag's been thrown in he's measured out at the 18 and we'll check the penalty here it's a 24 yd Run for the Junior from Miami Nate Noel and the Mountaineers are retreating Gary Patterson holding offense number 13 10yd penalty from the spot of the foul the pl results in a first down Christian horn the wide receiver yeah they get Christian horn who you see the SE of Jersey a well respected player and he tries to run off and then block and yeah I don't know about that one that to me now I see why Sean Clark was upset Elijah hussy transfer from East Tennessee State who's starting at one of the corners for Carolina Mel Haywood is coming in now the Navy transfer agular on a straight drop launching for Davis in the end zone and it is broken up three white helmets were there for Carolina Giovani Biggers and Don Chapman the two closest yeah just slightly underthrown by agular and Biggers does a great job of reading the eyes of of the receiver Davis you see doesn't see the football but see his eyes and then his hands go up reach reach at that point and rake for the football nice play by Giovanni Biggers second and 10 ball in Carolina territory at the 34 after appalachin got a fourth down stop and it's 14 of Drake May in the [Applause] heels and Julia agular is three of his first four for 42 yds quick throw in the perimeter Davis to work again and a great open field tackle and that's DJ Jones the converted running back making the stop it is the converted running back is Right Jee chisik the defensive coordinator from North Carolina that it's a great opportunity for him but it's an opportunity earned by DJ Jones good play in the open field third down and eight appalachin hit four of 13 last week against Gardner web they were 38% a year ago they were seven of 13 in the meeting in boom against the heels Haywood left side and he will be stopped at the 29 yd line and look that that's I would have thought third and eight there and maybe they just were seeing how much they got back that run the football go for it on fourth down Sean Clark talked to us a fair amount about you know extending possessions being aggressive you know in plus territory but maybe it was look we're just playing for the field goal get a little something back to make it a slightly shorter kick this would be the longest of Junior Michael hughes's career he was 43 last week against Garder web 40 a year ago against Old Dominion from 47 to give the Mountaineers the lead and he tugged it left he wanted to get down come back to it yeah Elijah green here's the running back on first down and he will pick up about five on first Brendan Harrington the Stop and there is a 72-year-old native of Cookville Tennessee and last week became the first in FBS history with 100 wins at two different D1 programs and Tim it'll be hard for that to happen again I think it's probably safe to say it once six to go for the first down May is four of his first six and looking to throw dances in the pocket he can keep it and game people aren't going to really expect especially at his size but his elusiveness in athleticism especially once he gets rolling is pretty impressive they put it to the 40 here's a throw to the perimeter and I think that's the first catch of or second Catch of the Day for Kobe PES and they'll give him a couple of yards Jordan favers who's made already a couple of plays for at State there you know there's been a lot of talk about fewer rpos in North Carolina's offense but I got to be honest I think I've seen probably five or six already today where they've got a run and it's tagged with some type of Escape for May to spit the ball out to the perimeter that's Morales in motion the tight end May looking to throw again this time from the pocket is'll sneak through 45 and got turned over shy of Midfield that was Parker the middle linebacker it'll be third and short see May's got some wiggle to him as he makes the defender Miss however it's the end of this run is one of the areas where he can improve good wiggle here good job a get down sooner get down first so Andrew Parker Jr can't put that hit on you third and short for Carolina Caleb hood has come in Wildcat for Carolina and it's stopped again and that is favors the [Applause] safety listen that's a great adjustment by Jordan favors it's an unbalanced look by North Carolina offensively and so favors he's just going to come he he just chases it down from behind you get into an unbalanced look you have a short Edge because it's just guard and then tight end it's good awareness good job making the play Ben Karan who was second a year ago in net punting had better than 41 yds is going to sail this to Kaden Robinson trying to flip it over Robinson inside the 10 at the five will signal for the fair catch so the Mountaineers back up to the wall after a 48 yd punt by Ken resume that series four years ago Demetrius Taylor here got the Big Kahuna the sack the fumble the recovery the touchdown darington Evans who would go on to the National Football League three rushing scores app had a 10-point lead Carolina tried to send the game to overtime 56y fell short and Eli drinkwitz a winner in 2019 3 431 that time Dalton strowman was the intended receiver and Sean Clark knows all about that he's got one of his own winning at Texas aanm last year the Michigan win for Jerry Moore which is kind of that standard of upsets in power five for the Mountaineers so there's no intimidation Tim about this game for Appalachia I think there's confidence in his football team especially you know even in a loss a year ago with how they played against the tar Hills feeling like these are winnable games Noel Straight Ahead did the ball pop out it did and it's going to be scooped up the Mountaineers Milan Tucker fell on it oh boy I'm not sure I've ever seen a ball get knocked loose and then be that far away from everybody behind the play Noel loses it maybe comes off rooker's heel and it was out in the open for a while before Tucker was able to fall on Damon Rucker punched it out Tucker falls on it for the Mountaineers who now have third and long they'll hand to Noel and that's a flag for a face mask and I think it's on Cedric gray the linebacker double check with Gary Patterson [Music] here personal foul face Mas number 98 defense 15yd penalty automatic first down Kevin Hester the big nose tackle he got all of it eser just reach out and no question about that one after some question on the one earlier we saw but yep that's a huge break obviously for the Mountaineers so first down ball at the 18 after the penalty and Noel trying to bend it back and does crosses the 20 and then Biggers grabs him by the shoulder pads and drops him at the 25 Taylor you guys were talking earlier up in the booth about how comfortable Joey agular looked in his first career start at the FBS level remember he came from Jo so I asked him like how do you prepare for a game like this so normally he's lighthearted joking around an hour before kickoff those when he locks in puts on his headphones and he sits on the four yd line to bask in the glory and get ready for kickoff guys Noel got hammered behind the line at the 23 DJ Jones say what for a converted running back Timmy looks pretty good coming down the Box yeah he's been involved in a number of plays now as of Desmond Edens who they want to get more out of he's in there as well and it's definitely a bit more aggressive defense than it was a year ago under Jean chisen they were handing it to DJ Jones a year ago and now he's trying to take it away third and five fors state agalar looks near side and Tucker will grab it at the 30 for the first down good sharp throw for seven yds and that's a good example they kind of go after Jones there Jones just playing with too much cushion just run to the sticks turn around and agar does a good job of just sticking it right to the receiver inside two to go in this first period of play Carolina outscored opponents a year ago 107 to 83 in the first period but the other night South Carolina scored first and here scoreless as we go inside about the final two minutes agar's five of seven now over 50 yards of passing another quick throw to the perimeter and tackled M Jackson or mikai Jackson rather sophomore wide receiver who had 85 catches a year ago but that's his first catch of the season and there is the offensive coordinator The Return of Frank ponts to Boon and it's been welcomed by Shan Clark in his St Pon has already bowed up a few unique formations for this F State offense second down straight drop deep shot looking for strowman and it is broken up incomplete by Marcus Allen Dalton strowman at 64 was the intended receiver he's got Marcus Allen by about three and a half inches Tim and I'm not sure either player really tracked the football that well Allen got spun around did not play it perfectly strowman I thought picked it up Laden for his size waiting for it to come down to him and because of that Allen is able to kind of gather himself and make a play on the football third down long seven for ab State pistol formation for agalar this is Haywood first down across the 40 Carolina gashed in the Run game for 10 yds by the Navy transfer and here's what's unique that is the third time that we've had third and eight or more an AB State decide to run the football and probably after seeing the way that North Carolina rushed South Carolina in passing situations a year ago just hoping to find a crease which they do there final half minute of the opening quarter Tim by throwing the ball early has agalar then kind of conceded a little bit of hey back those guys off now to run it yeah I mean it feels like especially in a known passing situation here goes agular out the back door yeah picks up seven to Midfield that'll be the final play of the first period Cedric gray the tackle for the Tar Heels well what was a wild shootout a year ago in Boon we've had threats posted by both schools here in the opening 15 minutes Carolina has been cashed out on Downs inside the 20 Appalachian State has missed a field goal scoreless after one in Chapel Hill and now here is Joey Aguilar with Nate noell in the backfield and number five in white gets it on first down for or second down rather for a couple of yards it'll be third and about two BO Atkinson who I thought was very good last week for the Tar Heels makes the stop lot to like about Sean Clark ttim lot to like about him I feel like he's kind of the perfect fit for this team the the the grit the oh kind of just the toughness that he wants in his program I think he kind of exemplifies it 11th play of the drive agilar on the play fake rolling right wants to load it down the field for Jackson and broken up Elijah huzzy who had eight tackles and a pass break up last Saturday night makes the stop there and here is fourth and short yeah coming off the boot he's going to end up having the flat I think he comes off of of this too early doesn't like it right away but then it come it reopens up if you come off of it too quickly you end up giving up the opportunity to convert up for the first down here's Clark and the Go Fort mentality they're three for three on fourth down this year all of that happened last week against the running Bulldogs of Gardner [Applause] will and whistle blow and what do we have here timeout we do Timeout on the field MERS pastorless we are early in Period two at Keenan stadium with Tim hasselbach Taylor tan bomb Wester I'm great to have you with us on acc Network boy each school is threatened but nobody's been able to cash in for points appalachin going for it here's Noel first down looked like Carolina pinched down Noel read it and went left and picks up the yardage to the 44 there a late stem by the defensive line of Carolina and then comes to the left side here and that is just Noel getting the better of power echles in the hole to fall forward for the first down and for a guy that's not very big listed at 510 190 May Noel runs with some power yep little popping there huh now agular will position Noel behind him the pistol tied end to the left and three receivers wide here Noel again on the ground and Carolina rallies quickly there you see gray Javari ritzy there for the tar Hills there's tamari Fox who's back after missing all of last year I think it's a really talented defensive line as you kind of go through those names you've mentioned ainson Evans Fox Hester Jr miles Murphy ritzy they're de they're they're talented I think it's some ways they're looking for even more production out of that group yep second down full 10 again agular to throw Far Side catches made that is Jackson and he'll be helped out of Bounds at the 37 transfer from St Francis of Pennsylvania another accurate throw by agular I mean right into the chest anytime you can make your receivers not reach outside the framing your body their body you're doing it right as a quarterback and we've seen a number of throws from agular that are exactly like that third down and [Applause] three agular going to run the pocket to the right keep it and gray knocks him down but he got the first down to the 32 and that's basically triple option football we're going to the acmy here so it's dive don't like it quarterback keep the pitch is 87 the tight endend Wilson going into the flat and it's a good decision initially to run for it and might have been a better decision to try to avoid some of that contact from cedri C 16th play of the drive though first and 10 at Carolina's 32 agular tried to fire it inside to Christian horn and that got blown by quickly incomplete so it'll be second down and 10 don't forget we've had four games for you on acc Network the night cap from Tallahassee number four Florida State off the Sunday night win against LSU welcomes the golden eagles of Southern Miss at 8:30 George Sedano Owen Franklin Orlando Franklin and Marilyn Payne have the call from you for you from Bobby Balon Field tonight in the Florida state capital here's Noel on second and 10 he will pick up three clarkk probably thinking four down territory looked like he just told whoever we're going to go right now he was on third down but you know how coaches are right they're playing ahead yep marel Mel Haywood is the running back with agular haven't seen the tight end much into the pass game yet here's John CLK had mentioned to us you to the plus side of of the 50 they're going to be aggressivly not getting it on Third and seven having a long fourth down opting for the kick this is 46 he missed earlier from 47 at the other end of Kenan Stadium snap down kick is away and the Mountain's lead three nothing center cut for Michael Hughes tonight it's going to be a story line for the remainder of this campaign yeah and then the shame of it for me is all kinds of accommodations were made because of the cancellation of football Co disrupted everything I mean people temporarily played in different conferences right people just stopped playing football all together and all kind other people it just the year didn't count and so the fact that he goes to North Carolina Central they don't have football and and then that counts as a transfer out of there is absurd Hampton wide open running 30 2520 105 touchdown Carolina 68 yds for sophomore of Mari and Hampton his third touchdown of the year and Carolina's in front and he's a Bruiser of a back but that was just so well blocked up front that gets into the open field and shows enough speed and atar Hill is down on the play and it's Trey Green the red shirt freshman from Northern Virginia they check green out Hampton's put Carolina on the board [Music] Kudos all around for a Marian Hampton who went 68 yards to put Carolina in front and Ryan Co has headed to wait here a moment for Trey Green to be helped from the field before he tries the point after for the Tar Heels Karan will hold and Spencer triplet handles the snap on the extra point for the Tar Heels and it is 73 Carolina on two snaps Tim yeah and two snaps and one of them an unbalanced look that really I think kind of confused the Mountaineers a little bit you see the tight end all receivers down to the bottom right at the screen then up top it's just a three-man side in between quarter Gainer Willie lampin Deo pounds they just do a nice job of just bodying everybody up and I don't think Hampton was ever touched and he certain certainly shows enough speed to get into the end zone you didn't know if you didn't know how fast he was you know now that's a big boy running fast and TZ Walker who we were talking about a moment ago loves it Carolina's in front 7 to three for the tar Milan Tucker very dangerous ous kickoff for turn man for appalachin who's deep to The Far Side and Co will kick it away Carolina had 64 yards of offense in the first quarter they got 68 on one swing with happen and without British Brooks he kind of had to answer the Bell a little bit here tonight boy has [Applause] it for the End Zone Mountaineers start at the 25 tlor it was really good to see TZ Walker over there smiling dapping up his teammate Omar in Hampton after that but there has been an outpouring of support really on social media and from his teammates they have not minced their words including Cayman Rucker who sent out a tweet saying they as in the NCAA say therefore for the student athletes and protect and advocate for mental health of student athletes however denying my voy devontes Walker eligibility just showed they about the process over the people this year is for Utz we talked to Drake may he told us he's actually trying to maybe wear the number nine for the rest of the season for his Guyz as tough as it is is good to see him out there on the sideline appalachin agalar dialing up Christian horn and he's knocked down I think a half step behind the line by Don Chapman well you saw Pat McAfee J billis weigh in with a long statement on Instagram that has caught the eye of a lot of people in the media game and timy you said a moment ago the inconsistency here is the frustrating part for Carolina and for a lot of people who support College athletics in what was a very difficult time in our country let alone for these student athletes it's that part of it that really bothers me here's agular keeping it from the pocket almost got tripped up keeps his feet and he'll have the Appalachian first down out to the 37 terrific play Joey agilar for 13 and a first down you I just have kind of put a bow on it I mean that's the part for me Wes is like it I I think if you just say hey this is how the rule is this is what we're doing it's a second time transfer when he went to North Carolina Central they did not play football in the fall or the spring at all and so like we've we've granted extra years of Eligibility to players because they lost season that happened to TZ Walker agar's ball that time will hardy in the lineup for Carolina got a hand in the throw Lane there on a ball for Davis by the way the NCAA has always cited before the appeal and reiterated it in the last 24 hours that this is in response to the focus on two-time transfers that was at the request and suggestion of coaches so that's where they're going to planned on this and we move on with college football second down left side and boy Hayward tried to pick up an extra yard or two but Power Eckles and Tavon Holloway we there on the stop for Caroline f for the youngster Walker by the way the other young folks that were involved in the uh that kind of situation early August also were all denied their El three of six is appalachin on third [Applause] down agular is8 of 15 for 60 [Applause] yds looking right pumps now being pursued Eckles gives Chase and will get him on the ground but a flag is thrown from deep in the secondary and it is a hold is the preliminary call from the back judge AB State lined up in a bunch man coverage a lot of times you try to run through some of the traffic Defense number 20 10 10yd penalty from the end of the Run first down it's ton Holloway yeah and that's Holloway who had a tough week last week here is 20 you see the bunch there and you see the man coverage and so now You' got to run through traffic expecting an outside break and he just reaches out and grabs Kaden Robinson and that's the right call by the officials yep Robinson moves without a catch in the ball [Music] game at four last week to tie horn lead in the Mountaineer Corp first and 10 now in Carolina territory at the 44 agular on a play fake to his right Lukes downfield and a diving catch Deshawn Davis at the Carolina 10 yd line terrific catch and a really good throw it looked like from Joey agalar yeah really good throw and what I like is the confidence of throwing he actually had some room to take off and run as he escapes outside the pocket there there's real estate let where it sees downfield good throw on the Move 34 yd strike to Davis first and goal for at State this drive has been a pretty good response so far after that big long Hampton run Haywood trying to sweep to the right and pushed out I believe around the five by Cedric gray Mel Haywood from over at weight Forest North Carolina 20 games at the Naval Academy over 1,300 allpurpose yards and three touchdowns when the coaching change was made up there K neolo let go after a long tenure he decided to hop in the portal and come to appalachin State and he's a nice answer to Noel in their run game yeah I mean I you need to have more than one back this college just they go so fast play so quickly so many snaps is nice to have a complimentary back Carolina is not allowed a touchdown in the last 62 game minutes agular to the end zone and incomplete for the tight end Gibbs Miller Gibbs looked like he was running out of room on the back line and I think he was more concerned about the back line the catching the football wrong way to think about it but a good job of agular kind of finding a throwing Lane dropping his elbow down and it's a pretty good throw down in the red area where the windows get tight and smaller the thr to Gibbs that he probably wishes he was able to pull in so both tight ends Gibbs and Wilson in the formation here for ab state agular to his right he'll dump it and Eli Wilson will give App State the [Applause] lead the same exact play that they ran in a short yardage situation earlier it's basically spread offense triple option football you got the dive which is the inside Zone run and then you're basically reading the overhang quarterback can keep it or the pitch man as the tight end running into the flat executed perfectly by appstate nine plays in less than 3 and 1/2 minutes and Hughes to try and make it a three-point lead for the Mountaineers and does joie agular tosses another touchdown pass is fifth of the Year already for Shawn Clark to Shawn Davis a big catch to set up the op State scoring opportunity and Eli Wilson puts him in [Music] [Applause] front don't forget a full day of ACC football we cap it for you tonight from Tallahassee following Southern Miss Florida state with the ACC huddle Kelsey rigs will'll keep things calm with Eric mlan EJ Manuel Coach Rick and Eddie Royal highlights analysis and more coming up right after the ball game tonight from Tallahassee here on acc Network and always available for you on the ESPN app Hughes to kick it away Caleb hood and George pedway deep and Caleb Hood will signal for the fair Catch and Carolina will start from his yeah and I said triple option football now we're not running out of the wishbone we're running it out of different formations but here's what I mean about it it's dive it's quarterback keep or it's the pitch man which is a tight end scraping across the formation so dive keep Defender comes up there's your pitch and so it's just a different way to tax the defense and really give them three different things to defend on one play Eli Wilson a touchdown last week a touchdown today first and 10 May throwing on first down PES over the catch trying to turn the corner and boy he's going to take some white shirts for about a 6yd ride it'll be second and four Jared Paul was the first guy of the field corner you know and I think that you know we talk about Drake May and all his ability how about you know lead your team Now respond to the response that you just saw from App State like there is an element of of playing the quarterback position now everyone's looking at you of how we React to what we just saw here goes am Mari and Hampton right side or left side and another big gash Hampton will be taken down somewhere inside the 40 maybe the 38 of out state by Jordan favers yeah and that helps and if I'm North Carolina right now now I'm trying to go fast after a big play it's well blocked again good job of passing it off the guys up front really lamped him does an excellent job and then the holees hit hard by Hampton here's May to his right with lots of time he'll throw and this is Jones and he'll pick up maybe five on the play to around the 33 Hampton's already over 100 yds on eight carries it's a career high eight for 126 remember he went for over 100 when you saw him in his debut last year and you know what's interesting is I think with the offenses we've seen here so explosive between Sam how and Drake may you think this this Air Attack and balls down the field but m brown wants to run the football first Caleb Hood gets his first Carry of the year and here is Hood held to seven games a year ago by injury he'll have the Tar Hill first down on a run of 10 to the 18 and I think what's tough about defend in this run game Hampton at 220 Caleb Hood at 225 big physical backs little Tempo from the tar Hills here's May keeping Drake to the near side at the 10 and brought down there Jackson green who had an interception a week ago the hometown kid from Boone made the play and a marker down it back number eight offense 10yd penalty repeat first now that's him this is pesur in space yeah pesur is in space he's kind of in the slot and I thought that that Drake ma did a nice job of setting up the block so here's pesur yeah and he gets him that's a that's a nice job of basically Jordan favors you know cutting underneath quickly and I think it's one of those plays where if you just hold off the angle that favors is taking Drake May probably ends up getting outside of him Hampton will come back in to spell Hood Carolina's got Blackwell and the two tight ends copher and Morales to the Farson May quick throw this is Blackwell and the tar Hills didn't block Jared Paul very well Paul fires through and takes down Blackwell yeah and I think Blackwell's got to go inside on this one you know basically follow his blockers he tries to go back outside and by going back outside he runs into a mouthful of Jared Paul third different school by the way for Paul out of Brooklyn New York originally at ruers then to Kansas and now Boone was his [Applause] address second down a loss of eight on the play May trying to elude The Rush and cannot get away from Brendan Harrington injured and lost for the year a season ago against Carolina Harrington who had three sacks two years ago comes up with a stop here yeah and I think Carolina is trying to scheme block this meaning it's going to look exactly like the Run you're going to pull offensive linemen and sometimes when you do that when you get a a fast up the- field Rush it's hard for the lineman to get there which is why you see Drake May going to the ground first sack Carolina's allowed this year of their Star Quarterback third and long may slips it in the boundary and that goes nowhere Mountaineers rally to make the stop on Blackwell and there's green again you know I got to be honest I I don't love that call like to me that's a call when you're someone's either coming after you which app certainly wasn't but basically you're playing such soft coverage but trust your quarter back you know if they're going to rush three let Drake May sit back there and find a window shoot the ball to it so maybe you've got a more manageable field goal 47 yd try for Ryan Co the Cincinnati transfer CO's kick is away and we are tied he had a 52 y as a bearcat started his college career with Delaware he banged one in from 54 four for the old blue hands back in the day he is tied this ball game at 10 just ahead of 3 minutes to play a reminder coming up we'll go to Tallahasse the auto owners insurance halftime report Kelsey rigs will be there and Mike norell on the set ahead of the game tonight against the Southern Miss Eagles Tim I mean first off it's a great job like being on set I mean two weeks in a row we're getting head coaches on set well done Y and listen I've been impressed with the job Mike norell has done at Florida State I think Jordan Travis the best thing about him is he's an outstanding decision maker and I think that's the first thing that that I would say to describe him and then on top of that obviously plenty of ability as a passer and as a runner I think they're going to be a tough team to play each and every week from whoever whomever their opponent is Travis was Sensational last Sunday night in Orlando especially in the second half and Bo what can you El say about Keon Coleman after week one so the golden eagles come in from Hattisburg tonight and remember now sou Miss came to Tallahassee a long time ago with a gunslinger from Kill Mississippi and won the game no return for Tucker Mountaineers will start from their 25 yd line and of course agular hit Eli Wilson to cap this last Drive yeah I was impressed with agular in that last Drive been impressed with him all night but good scramble pick up the first down then on the climb in the pocket shooting the football down the field and finally gets them into the end zone actually after having a touchdown pass dropped the play before and so Frank P has done a really good job getting his quarterback to starting his first game at the FPS level into a rhythm Frank PS cited his relationship with a quarterback's coach from Los Angeles by the name of Danny Hernandez and helping him discover the tools and talent of Joey agalon here is Noel and gray will help him out of bounds after a gain of two that's the funny part about this Frank monz was the QB coach with Josh gtis and Mario crisal at Miami last year and then in I guess late November early December he's on the phone with Danny Hernandez so agular comes into the files if you will of coaches right at least in this part of the country and then Frank Pon returns to Boon as the OC after Kevin Barb went to Mississippi State with Zach carnett and the next thing you know Joey agilar is in school for the spring semester and he's trying to make the play after being at the Diablo Valley Community College moral of the story is if you're a player or recruit be polite don't burn any Bridges because you way a season it might be your play caller it might be the guy deciding whether or not you're the starter I think they excited to have Joey agular at up State and been impressed with how he's played so far Desmond Evans forced the incomplete pass there so it's third and eight now for agalar and the Mountaineers two by two look here Carolina brings four agular shoots it to Tucker and a first down at the 36 you know it's the anticipation that's jumping out to me for Joey agular I mean that and the you know the accuracy watch this Ball's on right away on Tucker right away as soon as he turns around it's right in the middle of that zero and for a guy that you know was new to the program making his first start he looks really comfortable first down here's Noel skipping to the left and he'll have a first down knocked out in Midfield into Carolina territory on a 15yd run Tar Hill 49 and Shan Clark and the Mountaineers now maybe have a chance to double up remember they get the kick to start the second half and we're tied here late in this first half certainly a believer in that middle eight it's why they deferred the initial coin toss and Miller Gibbs with an excellent block on that last run by Nate noell the guys up front doing some pretty good work for the Mountaineers M near is over 100 yards of rushing now in this first half Haywood has come in to fill that spot right up the middle and he's going to pick up right at five to the 44 each school's got a couple of timeouts as we work to the final 90 seconds of this first [Music] half agilar straight drop going for the end zone and overshoots strowman and a marker down on the play on a ball intended for the Richard sophomore 59 repeat second down that is Jack Murphy who's playing at right tackle Jaden Ramsey was a little off his game they weren't sure how much he'd be able to go tonight so they move Murphy over to the left side and they bring marel Samuel a big 295 pounder into play the left side tackle and you know AB State really strong inside lot of experience at both guards and at Center but you mentioned that Jack Murphy having to swing over to right tackle really just gets a pretty good Rush put on him by Desmond Evans and I think that's an encouraging sign for the Tar Heels we've mentioned Evans Evans a few times tonight pistol set second down after the penalty Haywood trying to find the crease and Carolina plays it Cayman Rucker really about the first time we've called Rucker's name tonight on an individual play lost his helmet in the process he'll have to come off for a snap and that'll bring Amari Gainer the Florida state transfer onto the field to play that Jack position for Jean chisik and Tommy thigpin and Charlton Warren's defensive [Music] unit there's a reset of the play clock as we go inside of a minute it's third down and Sean Clark has no time no problem burning a little time here on Third and 14 he don't want Carolina to have a lot of chance back through the [Music] right see the MERS 38% a year ago five of their first nine tonight on third [Applause] down they going to run it with Haywood and he will get back to right around the original line at the 49 and Carolina will call the timeout with 25 seconds left power Eckles made the tackle know somewhat surprised that M didn't use a timeout right for third down uses one of his two that he had left right here this desire to to to save one for offense but look with this quarterback and these receivers I've seen it happen on this field with those plays yep don't forget tomorrow afternoon women's sports take over ACC Network first up at noon field hockey number seven Syracuse will host Yukon and then women's soccer rounds out the afternoon Virginia Tech welcoming top 20 Northwestern oh Florida Florida State and Tallahassee at 330 and then Wyoming and Louisville late all women's soccer All For You on acc Network tomorrow and available on the ESPN despite the conditions I guess up and down the Eastern Seaboard here today and especially in the Triangle of North Carolina we've been fortunate here since we started at since we started prior to the game it would have been ugly if you were playing at noon You' have been in a delay here but yep certainly avoided the bad stuff Elijah huzzy we'll wait on the punt here of the Aussie Mitchell Lake who is from Brisbane and that ball is going to be checked out of bounds across the way into the Tar Hill band at the 14 Now what is appalachin doing here tonight just trying to put another notch in their belt of power five wins of course in 2019 they beat Carolina here also got South Carolina and then last year 1714 at College Station and that was after a near Miss at home of Carolina I mean and when you say near miss that means a a two-point conversion Miss right I think it's what you're saying you're a tough football team I don't think they're scared of anybody and well against Power five programs they'll give you everything you can handle ball off the 14 from May and the tar Hills with one timeout in 18 seconds in trouble Drake just bails out with a back foot throw the pressure was coming from Sha Collins and Marcus Clark from the mount near defensive [Music] front so now with 14 seconds left Carolina signals in Phil Longo who was here last year as the offensive coordinator had to sweat bands and everything he did all the signals now they brought in guys wearing neon shirts on their bench area here's May on a keeper as the clock winds down Drake going to step out with 8 seconds here it'll be third down yeah it wouldn't surprise me to actually see this ball get kept on the ground stage of the game third down 8 seconds left four to a first down for Carolina and they're just going to run it with hood and that will be close to ending the first half and it does so it is 1010 at the half here Tim pretty interesting first 30 interesting first 30 I've been impressed with the the fight that we've seen in the App State Mountaineers and honestly I feel like you know just kind of getting bogged down once you kind of get a drive going by the tar Hills I think they may add a second back North did not call timeout nor did appas State and the clock would start on my on my signal that's the half all right so there you go so we have reached halftime and Coach Brown is promly join tile tan rhythm in the second half 28 yds of return including a 96 yard against the herd of Marshall and there will not be a return here off the boot from Co and before we get to the second half snap here's title yeah guys mat Brown honest as always going into halftime he said you guys it's simple they're making the critical plays we are not he preached finishing the entire week this week and we're simply not doing it as for ab state head coach Sean Clark says hey my guys have done everything I've already asked them to do and he said now it's about that Warrior mentality it is what this program is built on now we got to go show it guys Nate noell will be the running back for Joey agalar who was 11 of 20 in the first half including the touchdown pass to Eli Wilson agar on first down spins it for Davis a rolling catch and a first down for a [Music] you just go back to that first half that fourth down stop by App State I feel like really turned the tide because then you saw drives you know kind of be sustained ball out of that unc's offense hands and agar does a good job just navigating it and got a tie ball game here's Noel to the right after a 12yd throw to Davis and late no finally tackled by Desmond Evans but not after a gain of four [Music] [Music] South Carolina last week sacked nine times Carolina has yet to reach Joey agalo they pressured him but not sacking they're going to hand it on the sweep and here comes this is strowman or Davis yep Deshawn Davis six KN strowman eight picks up 10 on the sweep yeah just a great job of out leveraging the defense here and look at n no well the running back five out in front with a nice block on Tayon Holloway well-timed call by offensive coordinator Frank P see Davis five catches for 81 yards you see Noel and Haywood both in the ball game now little soft roll agular and boy was he throwing for Wilson or a little further down the field here I think he's trying to get the football to Wilson and you know I said it earlier about you know throwing the ball into the frame of a guy's body he's just dumping this off to Wilson right to his face mask should catch it but kind of an awkward position you know looking back for the football dangerous when those balls get tipped up in the air second down 10 now for the Mountaineers Noel the only back and a two by two look here from M state three receivers in the tight end low snap agilar hit as he throws it is caught this is strowman he'll have the Mountaineer first down digging toward the 32 before Don Chapman can push him back you said it earlier strowman's a big tall Target again good timing ball was there immediately with allows for better opportunity in terms of run after catch and feel like it's been a bit of a story for the Tar Heels where the corner is just not making the play at the moment of truth and not making a tackle the receiver does come down with the football 16 yd throw from agular D strowman play fake here as he taking his shot he sure is back across and caught TouchDown for Deshawn [Applause] Davis it's another great call by Frank PS running a deep over and as soon as agular came off of his play fake he knew it cuz the ball came out quickly an excellent throw with air let Davis just run underneath it career high six catches 114 for Deshawn Davis this is 33 yds in the [Applause] touchdown 75 yds and six plays in 217 [Applause] and that 8-minute window pays dividends for Sean Clark point is good it's 17 to 10 basically see what happen there's going to run a deep over and they're running this and coming off of the play fake he sees it right away Ball's out now it's just an excellent throw it's a great response great opening drive by the Mountaineers track in front thanks to Joey agilar 33 yds to Deshawn [Applause] Davis oh yeah everybody who's come down the mountain is Happy short kick this time and Caleb Hood fair catch at the 14 Carolina will scrimmage from its 25 Taylor I talked to appstate Star safety Nick Ross and I asked him which wide receiver do you feel like on your team is going to have a season he didn't hesitate he sent Deshawn Davis because it's overdue going up against him in practice every single day he said it's the best look I've gotten in my whole 5 years of playing I feel like this is the year for him in my opinion strong words guys he's the best slot receiver in the sun melt ooo well six catches 72 yards a year ago in the ball game at kid Brewer stadium for the MERS against the tar Hills he's gone 6 for 114 and another touchdown here tonight and now Marian Hampton in the pistol with Drake May bootlegg by May sidearm throw is short for JJ Jones incomplete Brendan Harrington was peeling off the edge for Sean Clark's team and I feel like this is an important drive for Carolina how how do you respond to this to open the second half kind of get punched the way they just got punched you can see the concern on M Brown's face he talked about seeing teams when he was in TV that didn't seem up for the game you only get so many opportunities in Carolina feeling a little flat right now Hampton just grinding will get five maybe six or seven out toward the 32 Andrew Parker the linebacker makes the Stop and it'll be about three and a half to a first down for [Applause] Carolina you're running or throwing here well to be honest with you I I'm doing something where I'm trying to get pesur or Nesbit an opportunity to put their hands on the football Drake May under duress got to break away and he pushes it down the field and it's a first down for Hampton and Carolina it's a twoand chest pass well listen you you can we measure a lot of things on quarterbacks their arm strength things like that but this is just competitiveness in the pocket and it's an outstanding play to keep his offense on the field Hampton going straight ahead again on the first down [Music] play and Amari and Hampton is a Bruiser period but he's showing you all that more here tonight yeah I think the toughness of the finish of these runs or something that can really lean on a defense and we've already seen the big play runs out of him second down and four Carolina trying to oun a mountaineer touchdown to start the second half it's Hampton right side and he will drive toward Midfield arnhold the weak side linebacker was there to make the play you can see why they've turned to Hampton the decisiveness you know he's not looking for a big play every run he's content saying look I I got to the line of scrimmage I'm all right lowering my pads and running behind them third down and two Carolina four for seven tonight on third down Hampton just bangs away [Music] again they've had some Sledgehammer running backs in Chapel Hill in the last 50 years James boom boom betterson Tim Billy the horse Johnson those were 70s guys on Third and short and now Marian Hampton showing you everything tonight May and I don't know what happened there Morales and Blackwell were out in the formation on that far Far Side well he's throwing the football to Morales and he's putting it on his right shoulder because of the way that that uh favors his is you know charging at the football and so because of it I think there's some confusion by the star here receivers Caleb hoods checked in for Hampton second in the full 10 for Carolina may have play fate appalachin triying to get there hit as he throws and it's caught on the crossing route pesur out of Bounds at the 20 yd line of the Mountaineers where Ethan Johnson shoved him out this is an excellent throw by Drake May because he's throwing this over route Ethan Johnson falls off of the clear route and so he kind of flattens him to bend him down so that Johnson can't fall off and make a play it's a heck of a throw by Drake May ball at the 18 quickly Hood into the boundary at the left side and he'll pick up four maybe five on first down Nick Ross makes the stop yeah not only does he do this but he's doing it with all kinds of static in the pocket as you see Sullivan In The Back Field not really able to follow through where being as tall as Drake May is really ends up being an advantage second down six to go for Carolina trailing a touchdown here early in the third May in the near flat here is nesbot and he will be slung around and out of bounds by Andrew Parker Jr first catch for Bryson nesbet 65 and a half 235 lb Jr from Charlotte mentioned First Catch I I feel like he is a guy they need to involve more in the passing game first and goal for Carolina and Caleb Hood score [Applause] standing control the response here's the word from m brown that's a really nice response and I think a lot of credit needs to go to offensive coordinator chip Lindsay because there is probably an element of you where you feel like all right need to really put this in my quarterback's hands right here but they were patient with the Run game Hampton came out and ran physical and then Hood did the same exact thing to finish it off 11 plays 75 yds and when you go back in chronicle the drive as Ryan Co ties the game at 17 it might be this two-and chess pass to Marian Hampton well we know that there's some basketball players in his family he knows about the chess pass and who knows how to find the end [Music] zone well you see the difference in the first 30 minutes and the first drive of the second half from a statistical point but Tim it's the playmaking it's the presence it's all the little intangible things here yeah Wes I think you're exactly right presence to me you know you say that word and it it jumps out it's third down feels like a got to have it situation first drive of the second half and you get through your progression have all kinds of static in the pocket just be able to find a way to get the to your check down to pick up the first down which leads to some big plays before the score yep Co to kick it away Tucker will wait and he's going to bring it off the goal line here headed to the far side and cuts it to 20 25 Milan Tucker very dangerous and out across the 40 to the 41 goes Tucker he had a 48 yard last week against Gardner web I told you he average 28 yds a year ago that's a huge return talk about responding seen so many of these kickoffs Fair CAU I think there was any doubt in Tucker's mind that he wanted to get one and take a crack at it so that one's to the 41 yd line best starting spot for the Mountaineers today Haywood the running back with agilar who has been terrific 12 14 of 24 for 169 and two touchdowns in his first start throw to the flat on the right side and the catch made by horn and it was Marcus Allen who's starting over there tonight for Carolina that makes the play feel like app just I get the sense that they don't really feel like Carolina's come up with an answer just yet and I also feel like they're starting to gain some confidence going after these corners for the tar Hills up for the first down Carolina Manning up here here's the sweep Tucker trying to get to the perimeter and power Eckles is going to pull him down it'll be a loss of two back on the other side of the Midfield strike great made the tackle 33 not 23 so second down coming up don't forget gain four news tonight from Tallahassee number four Florida State and Southern Miss kickoff schedule for :3 of Bobby valenfield tonight on acc Network agular pressured and throws it incomplete up the scene Tucker was the guy I think he wanted to get it to and it was Javari ritzy who got back there with Bo Atkinson to take agalar to the ground he was trying to get it to Tucker and probably had a shot to get Tucker but look at the way this pocket just absolutely collapses that's a good job by the defensive front for Carolina just squeezing that pocket so it was hard for agular to get the ball down field Gary Patterson and his group are huddling here and I'm not quite sure appalachin five for 10 on third down here's referee Patterson I think they were talking about grounding there's no foul for intentional grounding I just don't think he was able to get enough on the football I he's thrown the football down the middle of the field from the pocket obviously and because of the way the pocket just collapsed he wasn't able to get enough on it and was contacted definely did not see that as grounding I think the officials talking it through make the right call m brown handing line Judge Alex Amaya the what for at the tarhill bench agular again from the pocket right side throw caught first down maybe yes spinning away is kayen Robinson and down to the Carolina 30yd line and and I find Frank PS I'm feeling I'm really encouraged about these matchups because once again it's just a simple curl routes win on the route and then break the tackle I mean the problem for the Carolina uh defense right now is the corners when they allow a catch they're not even there to get the guy to the ground yep so now first and 10 Tar Hill 31 South Carolina who threw for 3 53 yds last week and now appalachin starting to find some success the Mountaineers have thrown for just a than 200 here's Haywood there's a flag down and he cannot get away from Atkinson and gray and it's an illegal shift on [Music] appalachin legal shift offense two players not getting St for one second SC first down be first and 15 back at the 3 six let's check for Titan so first down again for the Mountaineers eight different receivers tonight for Joey [Applause] agalon and what that tells you is look you're not just picking stick you're throwing the football where the defense is telling you to throw it Noel's coming again play fake by agar rolls to his right greay gives Chase intercepted Don Chapman has come up with the pick for [Applause] Carolina Tim it looked like gray pushed the pocket Chapman comes up with what is his fourth career interception it's a move the pocket play and everything just gets squee free for Joey agular as he's rolling out into the boundary a lot of bodies over [Applause] there flag on the play here will might have something off setting or dead ball nonetheless post scrimmage Chapman the senior from San Diego [Music] after the play they were fouled on team dead ball personal foul unnecessary roughness on on the offense dead ball personal foul unnecessary roughness on the return team those fouls off set it'll still be North Carolina's ball first and 10 you a chance to see how congested this works they're going into the flat they're running an over rout they're coming here and basically what happens is is Chapman who's originally in the flat he sinks back to deal with that over route and it just everything got condensed on agula and after he comes off of the flat and turns to throw the over route Chapman just ends up reading his eyes Don Chapman who's a senior played a lot of football pretty good instincts am Marian Hampton with Drake May they're going to flip it and coming here to the near side and this is Nate colums first touch is AAR heel the transfer from Georgia Tech picks up seven maybe eight yards On The Floss sweep mum you know that slot receiver type he's got a great feel for it not quite Josh downs but I think a similar type player second and short Hampton will get the first down clutches the football tight as Shawn Collins hitching from [Music] behind and now in this 17 all game Tim with 545 to go in the third these folks are getting what they came for with the Mountaineers and tar Hills aren't they yeah and I think the there's no question that they are he look last year was bananas once you got to the fourth quarter so no one leave early May fakes now to his right pumps now will tuck and he'll get to the 45 and Ferrar the linebacker was there looked like Harrington also came over for a swipe on the tackle number eight the outside backer potentially forap Stace and it's clearly a shot play play action fake the reverse you're trying to get something down the field it's a tie football game like these are the types of decisions that big time quarterbacks make it's not there just cuz he called it doesn't mean you have to throw it it's good decision just to to eat the footb football end up picking up a few yards NB been in motion they give it to Hampton rid a nesbet block left side he gets flipped over but it'll be just enough for the first down Sullivan is the guy who got a Marian Hampton airb Carolina has run for 209 tonight here's May rips it here to the near side Andre Green's First Catch of the year it'll be about four on the plate of the 35 here's part of the reason you can run the football like this is look at Drake may make him defend 53 and the third right so you spread these wide receivers out and if the quarterback has the ability even at his size to spit the ball out quickly with a nice quick release to a talented receiver outside the numbers it's going to open things up inside the Box we're going to hand it to hand to again and amarian splits it at the right side down to the appalachin 22 yd line yes doesn't it just feel like hey a punch outside now a punch in the middle punch outside punch in the middle just kind of methodically working your way down the field 13 yd run there here goes Hampton again he'll bust it and spin and drop shy of the 10 at the 11 that's enough for another Carolina of first down on the Tackle by Parker a Marian p is going to work tonight unofficially 16 carries 180 yd my goodness and now Hood will come in to spell him Carolina without British Brooks tonight Maran ampton says I'll take his his lunch and mine too here's Hood and a good play by the Mountaineers there that is Jackson green and Tim he made a heck of a play last week against Garden wh this guy finds the football he finds the football I love the way the coaches talked about him they said he's a do it right guy you know like everything it is doesn't matter if it's in the wa room doesn't matter how he practices he's a do- it right guy and and coaches always like to see success from those types of players single receiver in the boundary is green kind him a bunch look to the top of the screen Mountaineers Rush three May back up in the pocket dances throws that's pesur the catch near the line of scrimmage and boy appalachin there in a hurry Ethan Johnson the headliner he had some help though EJ Jackson a marshall transfer got over in the mix as well for coach clar I think this is one of these areas third and long you're in the Red Zone you have to be smart you obviously want to push the ball down the field but it's not worth a turnover you saw what it did to app States last Drive Carolina going empty here Mountaineers bring three May loads throws in zone it's caught back line out of bounds was [Applause] nesb I've said a few times the guys on third down should be Nesbit and pesur and this is a beautiful throw and it's hard to see when that initial foot comes down the knee hits down in the white where the Aral is through the back so field goal time here for Co he hit from 47 in the first half 31 y to put Caroline in front here [Applause] here in the final 90 seconds of quarter three and that is good well Don Chapman's fourth career interception leads to the field goal by the Cincinnati transfer Ryan Co North Carolina back in front late third at Chapel Hill [Music] [Applause] hey don't forget tomorrow afternoon women's sports take over ACC Network high noon we got great field hockey for you number seven Syracuse welcomes Yukon to Central New York and then it's a soccer triple header with stops at blackburg Tallahassee and Louisville all on acc Network and always available for you on the ESP in app Joey agular from an California by way of Diablo Valley Community College working on a career high for appalachin who Trails 20 to 17 and before the Mountaineers snap it now here is tonight's trivia question you ready I'm ready name the five former appstate head coaches who went on to become head coaches at either ACC or SEC programs answer coming for you in a moment I know three does that count that's not five but three is good is that a passing grade yeah that's 60% so I would say it's right at the line the way I had it in school Noel bangs through for four yds second and Six coming up you had teachers pass you at 60 well just we've only worked together a few games there's no need to dive into my academic record my mom's watching after all second down and six and a little bit of rain has reached Keenan Stadium agular wants to kind of reset his group here with less than a minute to go in the third and Noel again that'll be a first down crosses the 35 before he got tripped up look like miles Murphy there's big miles from Greensboro 27th career start for for him tonight 76 total tackles coming [Music] in we mentioned it earlier rain before the game and now some of that stuff that was in the area prior to kickoff has reemerged and certainly going to make a challenge I would think to the passing game agular pumps it and offline he was looking for Jackson and Jackson got tangled up in fell down on the way to trying to get in the pass line so very quickly now it is second and 10 with 12 seconds to go and the rain getting heavier I always felt there were some guys that handled a wet ball gr there were other guys I would fit in this category that it made it a struggle and it'll be interesting to see how agular is able to handle the elements yep they're going to run it on the ground with Noel and he will break to the 44 he'll be a yard shy of the first down Don Chapman The Tackle and that will be the end of the third so three quarters in the books North Carolina has just pushed ahead on a co- field goal by [Music] three don't forget still to come tonight on acc Network ACC prime time tonight from Tallahassee number four Florida State host Southern Miss 8:30 kick George Sedano Orlando Franklin Marilyn Payne standing by game is also available for you on the ESPN we go to the fourth third and long Noel stopped right at the line or third and short I should say and I think it's going to be fourth down for Shan Clark here Carolina did a pretty good job him yeah and so I think in a three-point game you're the underdog and you've got it like this in the conditions I'd be fine punting this football was it maybe it's the way Carolina has run the football the last couple drives yeah that has convinced Sean Clark that he FS going for the right move got three tight ends on the field and a single receiver for agular Noel is the running back agular play fake trying to hit a release it's a TIY in who holds on my goodness Miller Gibbs who had a 13 yd touchdown catch a year ago and boom converts fourth in inches gosh this is a gutsy call you fake the quarterback sneak basically and then you just throw a little pop pass and that is close to getting broken up by Cedric gray that's another perfect throw by Joey agilar and Gibbs who's done a lot of great work in the Run game as a blocker tonight comes up with a huge catch looks like he might have getting shaken up on the play as well first down and 10 three-point lead for the Tar Heels Nate Noel spun away from ritzy but right into the arms of another Tar Hill I think that's Atkinson what B ainson has played well in the first two ball games for Carolina defensively nine different receivers have caught a pass tonight from Joey agalar I mean which is incredible in terms of how he's spreading the football around and there's obviously a no fear mentality as here we are in the fourth quarter for Sean Clark AAR play fake looping it downfield for strowman and it is broken up Carolina had two guys there Marcus Allen and Gio Biggers and it looked like with playing for the pick him yeah I think he was and really that was a terrible decision by Joey agula basically they got a post down at the bottom of the screen but you got a middle of the field safety who's dropping back anytime you have a middle of the field safety the post should be dead and this is exactly why fortunately strowman such a big tall player able to play a little defense before Biggers able to come down with the football third down nine for the Mountaineers [Applause] straight drop flush to his right going to Loop it up and it is caught What A Catch by strowman all 6'4 of Dalton strowman necessary there to convert the third and long but listen Nate noell does an awesome job in pass protection just looking pick up Rucker that gives Joey agar some time and then strowman basically says week one of the NFL tomorrow I'm getting on you've got Moss and making a play on Marcus Allen first down and 10 Red Zone possession for the Mountaineers here's agular thought about a shovel pass now in trouble and Biggers will take him to the ground after a yard maybe two on the play back to the theatrics of strowman I mean just kind of thrown up and strowman really wasn't in great position to go fight for the football cuts underneath and not much Marcus Allen at 61 A2 can do about that against the 6'4 strowman 11th play of the drive second and nine we're three minutes into quarter number four and the Mountaineers and tar Hills are at it again three-point Carolina lead agulara pump now to Tucker in the flat he'll get the 10 he'll have the first down first and goal for appalachin at the Tar Heels six on Don Chapman [Applause] here 10yd throw from agular to Malik Tucker or Milan Tucker rather the Junior from Fort [Applause] Myers round weathering rain here at Kanan sellout house watching the fourth meeting all time with the two in state schools pistol set here now for agalon with [Applause] Noel left side stiff arm and [Applause] touchdown Mountaineers are back in [Applause] front it's an impressive drive by App State starting with the decision on fourth down by SE Clark to go for it huge throw by Joey agar and then Nate noell just continues to impress with the strength and power that he runs with seven yd run by Noel Mountaineers in front in Chapel [Applause] Hill fourth lead change of the night Nate Noel second rushing score of the Year T and you see the power you see the speed and there too much speed for power Echo to get an angle on him and Sean Clark pretty thrilled about how his team responded the segment of this stadium that has some App State fans that have traveled got a little bit of acknowledgement from the coach it was Mark hel Samuel that was down on the field when we went to commercial break he's okay and they've gotten him off the field and here is Michael Hughes make it a 2420 game so appalachin has had it three times they've scored two touchdowns and here's the most recent 12-play drive and I think this 12pl drive had a little bit of everything a fourth down pop pass and then just our scholarship is better than yours type play from strowman then a good finish from what you would expect out of this offense which is a good strong run by Nate noell and you know I feel like we keep talking about responding and I would just say this as a quarterback Joy agler making his first FBS start I know quarterbacks don't play against other quarterbacks but Drake may I believe is going to be the first overall pick in this upcoming NFL draft he's that good of a prospect and so when you're the quarterback that's playing on the other side you're aware of it you think of it you know who you're who you're playing against and I've been really impressed with how he has responded and what it's a big game certainly for him and for this program it's also interesting too because when Ryan Berger got hurt last week against Garder web and Joey agilar came in the game Tim I mean his first throw is a seed for a touchdown and from that point on nothing against Ryan burer appalachian's confidence offensively seemed to really change here's Caleb Hood calling for the fair catch at the 18 yd line so Carolina will start first and 10 from its 25 on their third possession they've scored 10 points by the way in their two second half drives but the confidence of appalachin State offensively has been there from the jump it feels like to from the jump and and we were told and I said it earlier that the competition between Ryan burer Joey agler came down to the last scrimmage and Ryan Burger played well in the last scrimmage and he was named the starter that's hard for a quarterback the guy that's not named the starter to your point Wes to come into the game and say all right I'm just going to start throwing seeds for touchdowns and then do this in my first start it's been impressive here's May to work now Carolina having to respond again Blackwell the catch at the 30 tried to spin away from Ethan Johnson with a very nice shoe top tackle of the sophomore corner so it's a gain of five and Cory Gainer right over the top of the [Music] football there's a quick snap and going to hand it to Hampton and amarian Hampton just goes banging away for another Carill for first down to the 36 he's going to take more than one white shirt tonight 10 to bring 28 to the ground it it certainly is and you know I feel like Carolina in the past has been one of these a you know quick strike offenses in terms of shooting the ball down the field like with new offense coordinator chip Lindsay I think we'll see a more methodical approach here is May going to fire it deep and it's C Jones at the 20 inside the 10 first and goal [Applause] Carolina and just as I say it's hard play action the post of Jones and it's perfectly thrown by Drake May and now we're going to see the Tar Heels go fast Carolina right up on the line after the 57 yd throw to JJ Jones here is Hampton chugging inside the five look at the white shirts he takes to the end zone TouchDown for amarian [Applause] [Applause] Hampton after the personal foul unnecessary roughness number 11 appal stage the touchdown is good the 15 yds will be en forced on the kickoff that's Jordan [Music] favers and it took Carolina 85 seconds and four plays to answer just as I said that they were going to be methodical was a big very good tonight big strike down the field look they can do it either way but then the finish on the Run oh yeah it was incredible by Hampton 192 now on 18 carries for amarian Hampton who's got a 68 yd run where he was an open field and dusted him and now he hit nearly all 11 of the Mountaineers on the way into the end zone Tar Heels back in front fourth quarter continues in a [Music] moment Carolina back in front after Hampton's second touchdown run Coach Brown likes all those developments so how about tonight's edition of wedia m brown spent one year in Boone as the head coach of the Mountaineers 1983 oh The Dashing Young Man from Cookville Tennessee that's by the way former interim head coach ever Withers on the left and T Murphy one of Coach Brown's players uh that would be 40 years ago in boom and there is wait that's Sparky Woods who also was appalachin head coach by the way right there he's now working as a uh wow assistant to m brown given a few away maybe end over in and Co kicks it through the uprights Mountaineers will scrimmage from their 25 yd line so once again our trivia question tonight a bit better as the year goes on timing that the five former appstate head coaches who went on to become head coaches at the ACC or SEC level ma Brown batty feathers who later coached at NC State Sparky Woods Scott saterfield we all know went from app to Louisville and Eli dritz who like m brown had a season long cup of coffee and Boon now coaches it MZ zou here's Noel trying to round the corner and and he's going to get maybe 10 it'll be just shot second and two a marker down and here are the five we mentioned batty feathers by the way NC State and then later I think was an assistant at Wake Forest which you can do ma Brown Sparky Woods sack and Eli drist we had a little holding call on appalache think they did that to buy a little time so you could dig a little deep so that you didn't just prove that you knew the answer to the affle Trib question but you knew really deep facts on all five different coaches yeah can't I can't confirm the details on B feathers I have to go back to that so the holding penalty on app makes it first and 19 Car Heels by three inside nine we go in the fourth and this is Haywood trying to get going and Evans rides his back to a tackle out at the 22 m brown by the way left out went to tane and then in 1988 was tabed by John Swafford to be the next head coach of the tar and of course in Chapel Hill now has won 100 games he won 69 games from 88 to 97 and he's 31 and 22 in his second St here tonight has one tie in his coaching career that was Georgia second down Haywood Evans tries to get him to the turf and will but he's over the 25 toward the 28 Tim if you're showing far here you kind of at times tonight have had to run past the two-way game going in the rain starting to fall the rain starting to fall and you think about the hold on first down is what leads to you know a known passing situations we've kind of talked about last week Carolina they rushed the passer extremely well so I do think you've got to be be careful give probably help on the way out terms of backs chipping on the way out of the back field keep an eye on Amari Gainer bottom of the formation defensively agular to throw and it is broken up how about the play Marcus Allen makes on the intended receiver there in the bench area that was Kaden Robinson I thought it was a pretty good throw by agular accurate throw thought probably the ball should have been brought in but you're right it's Marcus Allen with a pretty good rake of the football right there on the way out and has not been an easy night for these Carolina of Corners so that's a pretty good job of responding after that by Marcus Allen only the second putt of the night for the Aussie Mitchell Lake left footed now end over in and it will check up Carolina will get out of the way and it is down by the Long Snapper John [Applause] Stone well amarian Hampton's been the star here tonight for Carolina the ground game been the star it's been big plays obviously saw it in the long touchdown run that he had but it's also been done with a lot of power just such a big physical back runs behind his p and him a little bit of help from his bigs on his last touchdown run eight away from becoming the first Tar Heel since Tai Chandler to run for 200 in a game Andrew Parker makes the tackle on Hampton it'll be second down at about seven clock here both schools with all three timeouts as you see and working towards seven to [Music] play two by two look here from May Long throw to The Far Side Blackwell or no Jones who caught the touchdown spun around at the 42 so it'll be third and maybe a yard or two right I feel like that really has been the identity of this tar here offense tonight you know it's a tough runs in the middle and then when it gets packed in and condense go ahead and throw a hitch outside now near you know crowd the line and amarian Hampton does not care Bulls his way to the 43 and A2 maybe the 44 and that's a first down and you know you just mentioned Tai Chandler went up over 200 yds rushing obviously Phil Longo was the offensive coordinator at the time I do get the sense here that there's a grinded out Run game mentality in these situations to finish games that Mack really wants to get better at and back to [Applause] first and 10 now for May hands to Hampton again he got knocked back can't keep his feet and that was Harrington Brendan Harrington kind of hit him head on and am Mari misstep trying to keep his feet and good play by the linebacker it's Harington and it's 12 Sean Collins who kind of creates a little bit of penetration as well which allows Harrington to make the play and now T get a little bit behind schedule mhm second and 11 May the snap looks right loads and shoots it and incomplete sliding attempt for pesur and down on the field is Harrington so we will step aside with 522 to go Brendan Harrington shaking up for appalache we told you earlier this young man Brendon Harrington from nearby Pittsboro North Carolina was lost for the year a year ago against Carolina was trying to get back played last week in the opener was on the field tonight making contributions and unfortunately had to be helped all the way to the medical tent the Appalachian bench so Kaden Sullivan has replaced Harrington here for the Mountaineers and a very important third down for Carolina NZ the tight end in motion Mountaineers bringing pressure May shoots it to NZ backside catch there's a flag down nzb's got the first down to the 43 will'll have to check the flag from Gary Patterson holding number 65 offense 10yd penalty repeat third down it's on the center Cory Gainer and Cory Gainer initially is in pretty good position right here and like kind of on the redirect of the rush it just hooks him that's Montes Kelly Junior from Cincinnati you know the shame of it for Carolina is Cory gner sliding to his left he's a veteran player and he's sliding left he ends up getting beat left and in hooking the defender and because of that now third and forever for Carolina yep 20 one for the first down May going to run with it trying to find some blockers tried to keep the play alive and he'll be taken down about 11 yds shy of the first [Music] down so leading by three with 442 to go M Brown's got his putt unit huddled up and ready to go and Ben Kieran is going to putt it to Kaden Robinson with the way app has been playing offense West look we're sitting here right around four minutes when this drive is going to start snap is high Kieran gets it away Robinson to his left calls for the fair catch around the [Applause] 15 remind you of course kick off scheduled tonight around 8:30 don't forget after Florida State Southern Miss the ACC huddle tonight from do Campbell complete wrap up of week two highlights analysis interviews and more they cover it all right here on acc Network in the ESPN and congratulations Miami's beating Texas A&M tonight by 15 at the Hard Rock Mr Hassel pretty good that is two more wins against the Southeastern Conference I would say the ACCC been a pretty good start to the college football season those conference matchups appalachin will start from its 15 agular has been terrific he'll turn handle Haywood caught it fumbled it and then scooped it back up and I think got back to the line of scrimmage that was almost disastrous almost disastrous talk about a perfect bounce for App State I mean the handoff is never secured and that bounces right back up you tell me is that the difference between turf and grass I mean there certain Ian but even on Turf that ball could squirt out anywhere and the thing for App State here you really don't have to worry about the clock you just are trying to get points and so the clock doesn't matter should not be a factor in fact it could end up helping you with how this game plays out Noel in the back field here's agular hit as he throws and it's caught first down boy Desmond Evans unlocked agular but a terrific catch on the back end by Kayon robinsson for a mountaineer first down it it is an awesome job by agler because he gets to number three in the progression he's going to the flat to the over and then he ends up hitting thaty coming into his vision Robinson and he's doing it under a lot of pressure from Desmond Edwards First Press set it down to the 28 for the Mountaineers under three to play all three timeouts here's Blitz coming agular Got Away going to throw and incomplete toward strowman pressure from Elijah huzzy the corner here the transfer from East Tennessee State and huzzy comes off the corner he's unblocked and that could be a disastrous play for ab state but instead it's great awareness by agular to avoid the rush get the football out and all of a sudden the clock stops he also did not take a negative [Applause] play pistol set for the Mountaineers three receivers and a tight end gelar hit as he throws downfield and incomplete no flag on a ball intended for Robinson Holloway was there along with huzzy for the Tar Heels now third and 10 and again agular under a bunch of pressure frows into a lot of traffic I think it's the right no call in terms of pass interference bunch of guys going up for the football if it were me I'm giving strowman an opportunity he's had a big night you can throw it to him while he's covered he'll be at the top of the screen that is the match up that is the player that I'm trying to get the football to if I'm out state two by two look Carolina trying to get there back across the middle caught the tight end and out of bounds goes Eli Wilson with an appalachin first down and a flag on the play added to it the Umpire Troy Riley throwing the flag as Wilson was taken out of bounds into the Mountaineer bench and Gary Patterson talking toward the Abate bench which might mean a flag to Carolina foul face mask defense 15yd penalty from M the Run automatic first down you see both these linebackers walked up into the a gap they come and because they V Kate you just replace those linebackers with Eli Wilson coming across the formation on a little Crossing route good accurate throw tack on the face mask now AB State on the plus side of the 50 yd line got to feel like they're in business 241 to go three timeouts for both [Applause] schools agilar going to work with the Mountaineers and over throws Noel now blue shirts were flying around Cay and Rucker was within a whisker taking agular down so it's second and 10 I would say with think about the pressure agular has already seen this drive you just said it again West all around him to me this is right for a screen with the way that the rush is coming to hit a screen here's agular keeping this time and boy got lit up as he let it go the ball popped out and I think is scrambled for it but did agular get the first down on the keeper clock is whistled at 224 he gets the first down and I think even though he takes this huge shot from Chapman I think he hits the ground car was down prior to losing possession first down so it is a first down on the quarterback [Music] keeper he keeps the ball on the read takes a shot shot and I think it's when he hits the ground after the big shot from Chapman where the ball finally comes loose yep at the 34 they're going to look at [Applause] this now Chapman hits agular but we didn't quite get the clarity of Gary Patterson's announcement there they're going to review the play I Believe agular [Music] [Applause] are I think he's possessing that football even after the big shot hits the ground and as that right elbow hits the ground that bar ends up the ball ends up getting Jarred loose Tim I don't believe they're looking to see if there's targeting here because well he's a runner Russ right we agree that he's a runner Chapman hits him Square and well there's no crown of the helmet like to me that's face mask some helmet but that is not crown of the helmet so we have a runner yeah no Crowder helmet and so we're not looking at targeting we're seeing if he's down and quite honestly I think he's clearly down because he's possessing that football until right there yeah the elbow hit it looks like at the 34 of Carolina now remember Michael Hughes has hit from 46 already tonight and missed from 47 further review the ruling on the field of the ball carrier being down stands also targeting was reviewed on that play and there was no targeting on the play first down app state so we're all good to [Applause] go it is a first down run for agar Sean Clark's excited he should be excited I I think Sean Clark was saying look I I just want this to be a game in the fourth quarter and he got it give us a chance and not only is it a game in the fourth quarter with 224 plus territory first down you're possessing the football he signed up for this last seven games against Power five have been decided by seven or less previous play is on further review now I'm going to uh guess here that this is Booth initiated because it felt like Gary Patterson had summarized the sequence and this might be to confirm where agular went down cuz it's the 34 it's a first down if it's not the 34 it' be second down right cor and you see takes this shot here and and that ball is past the 35 yd line is it all the way to the 34 we're not sure and so it's a good run to be honest with you when I see that right knee go down after the hit I'm not sure that that football has made it all the way to the 34 yd line which would mean it's not a first down right perhaps well here are the Mountaineers who won last year at College Station were're edged by Carolina we' talked about a kid Brewer tonight as you see the agular run again but remember the close calls at Penn State the close calls in Knoxville uh and this the third meeting since 2019 with Carolina and all three of these have been like this after further review ruling on the field that the ball carrier was down and he made the line the game first and 10 all right so there we are so we're all buttoned up [Music] again now if you're m brown and Sean Clark here you're Sean Clark what you're doing is working Carolina's coming within a whisker though of agular on what two or three snaps here in this possession they are but I'm not concerned about the clock with all three of my timeouts 220 left in fact I want to score whether it's field goal touchdown with as little time left on the clock as possible here's Noel rounding to the far side he's got another first down and out of bounds with 22 to go yeah and and I mean even more so now right mean magnify what I just said because now it's a first down clock stopped still have all your timeouts if anything you almost want to make sure you don't score too quickly 2 minutes to go so ball at the 20 [Applause] and no well dances left and will be dropped after a gain of two maybe see the foot come in from The Far Side at the 19 came in Rucker to start and Tim it's right there where we just saw the example of the new rules kicking in right so now under two minutes the clock stops and we've got 100 seconds left to go here and it's second and nine which is why Ma just took his first time out right cuz if they end up holding them kicking a field goal it's a tie game you're giving yourself sometime and worst case scenario for ma in Carolina they score leaving yourself as much time as [Applause] [Music] possible so a three-point lead now this is Hughes kicking off a moment ago and remember he did not kick it particularly deep right [Applause] and Michael Hughes maybe maybe not quite in tiptop shape 10th play of the drive out of the Carolina timeout second down nine agular hit as he throws incomplete boy that time the tar Hills Desmond Evans again Cayman Rucker also in the neighborhood Elijah hussy and coverage those two have impacted this football game West there's no question about it it's Evans again and Rucker once again and you know the plan coming into the game was to help on those guys in terms of pass rush and I would make sure I did it here putting the ball in the air see the details on Joey agular on third down six of nine five have been first downs Noel the running back in the pistol going to hand it to Noel and he'll be tackled at the 16 and does Carolina stop the clock they do not fourth down now and I'm surprised at that call when you think about you know third n and what the front has done so Carolina does take the time out now with 126 to go and it's Fourth and six for the Mountaineers yeah and and listen Maybe Sean Clark is saying look I got three I want to make sure they burn another timeout before I kick the field goal but to me it's just too much time left on the clock if you're going to kick a field goal to tie a game at 27 with a minute and a half half left you think he goes for this do you think he goes for this I mean if I'm Sean Clark I would not go for this fourth and three or less he is a go for it mentality and here comes Hughes to kick it so this is six so he's going to go for the tie with Michael Hughes who is two for four on the year he was one for two last week against Gardner web he missed from 47 he hit from 46 in the first half this is right about 33 to tie of the game snap spot and it is good inside the left third and now Carolina has one timeout and 122 to go Tim I know this is the third game in the series and technically the series ends after tonight but boy they've been three terrific games three terrific games and sure app would love to keep playing I'm not sure how Carolina would feel about it I'm impressed with App State Sean Clark the confidence that they've come in here with the fight that they've continued to kind of put up and got a tie football game with minute 22 left and it's a great opportunity for Drake May Ryan Co remember now his hit tonight from 47 and from 31 last week 37 in Charlotte I told you in 40 Collegiate games his longest field goal at Cincinnati was 52 his longest at Delaware 54 so keep that in mind appalachin has all three timeouts thear Hills have one remaining with George pedway the only guy truly deep for the tar Hills Caleb Hood stands around the seven to wait on the kick from fugh short kick again Hood going to run up make a sliding catch of it right in the neighborhood of the 25 boy Hughes has been terrific just kind of hitting the L wedge hasn't he he has and I'm not sure that there's an injury anything I I think you're just basically saying look we're going to make you try to feeli this here also prevent you from having a return player Spotlight brought to you tonight by athletic Brewing Company Omarian Hampton the subject of our player Spotlight 21 carries a career high 197 and two touchdowns and he's in the ball game with Drake knate car heels from the with 25 tied at 27 app has all three timeouts Carolina with one Mountaineers bringing four May from the pocket and he will be sacked Michael Fletcher the Michigan State transfer it's not something we've really seen happen tonight where the pocket just collapses on Drake may but that's exactly what happens he starts to his left I think there was some confusion on the route appalachin just burned a timeout and I would too if I get a sack on first down you get a sack on first down and with this quarterback if I'm m brown it's not changing my aggressiveness it's not with a quarterback that's been a starter for over a year has all kinds of ability makes good decisions it's it's not going to change my aggressiveness I understand what Sean Clark is doing at the same time I don't think you can curl up right now if you're Carolina right now it's an overtime game if we end it here m brown would love to give Ryan Co a chance and after going sackless last week the Carolina offense has given up two here tonight don't you feel right now Wes that all I mean the the it's a tie go ball game they're going to winner right now here's the deal the pressure feels like it's on Carolina in a big big way sure does Mountaineers bring for again May cuts it loose and it's a first down catch made by Jones he's got the big touchdown grab and he's got a first down out to the 38 107 to go Carolina to the line May again looking right runs through a tackle 40 and Drake will get to the 48 and a first down I believe and he runs through two tackles that is strength in the pocket that can't say I've seen a ton of that before but that strength to climb through contact in the pocket impressive run two by two look again May moves to his right now we'll just flip it out of bounds into the Mountaineer bench Thomas Davis was pressuring him transfer from [Music] Miami that's what I mean on that last play I mean that it's two broken tackles basically as he's able to carry the second one for a first down and with the way they're able to push the ball down the field especially on some of these in Cuts they're not far from being in field goal R yep Ryan CO's line to make right about the 37 here's May shoots it caught first down PES to the appalachin 37 yd line with 41 seconds left 42 seconds left and Shan Clark's got two timeouts M Brown's got one may looks right throws right pesur catches and backs out of Bounds at the 31 and obviously if you're going to kick the game winning field goal you want that time out or there to be a stoppage of play before that field goal team runs out so you really want to keep that timeout in your pocket so on these early Downs working the sideline is definitely best and now appalachin Burns timeout number two leaving the Mountaineers with one so here's my question if you're m brown Sean Clark's got one timeout left you've got 35 seconds in one timeout the Caroline time out's easy you bring your kicker on right you you hand the ball to amarian Hampton on second and five here look if you're [Music] okay listen if you think Sean Clark's going to take the time out I'm fine running it but if he doesn't you're leaving yourself a longer field goal try than you want to leave one of the things I learned from a coach I had in the National Football League it was Kevin gilbride was the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants right and he's like one thing I've learned is it's you can never be close enough there's a lot of pressure when you walk out onto this field to kick a game-winning field goal and if you're going to ask a guy to make a 40 plus yard field goal why not make it easier on him Ryan Co hit 79% of his field goals at [Music] Cincinnati and of course we told you he started at Delaware you know Ryan Longwell used to be a kicker for the Green Bay Packers and say wait you know what this where we need to get he'd be like Hey listen make it be a 35 y or shorter right doesn't mean he can do it but that's what I want second down five TI game Hampton is the running back with May Carolina to throw May quick shot incomplete toward Jones so it's now third and five so what's interesting a year ago on critical Downs late in the fourth quarter App State brought all kinds of pressure obviously different defensive coordinator this year with Scott Sloan as the defensive coordinator but came after Drake May big time on that last down looks like they're going to play a little bit of coverage here on third down saw the eyes of Andrew Parker Jr the linebacker snap to May he'll keep it to the left side and Drake turns the corner at the 30 dies for the 25 that's a first [Applause] down Drake May with his feet to okay I think he's a complete player and that's one of the reasons why the ability to keep the ball in a critical situation keep the ball out the back end this is Hampton fighting for yards he will get to the 20 and the timeout is asked for with two seconds left for Carolina and now Ryan Co to win it and Shan Clark can burn one to ice him if he chooses 21 yds of rushing tonight for Marian Hampton and it's going to come on a night when Drake May has thrown for just barely 200 yd 208 21 for 30 on the Night by Drake may now he has done some work on the ground as well he's made some good decisions but the big plays in the passing game weren't there and really the big plays have come from Hampton yep Tar Heels have been challenged tonight appalachin state has poured it out Tim and so is Joey agular in his first start for Shan Clark's team he's thrown for 272 on 21 of 40 40 attempts yep your first start the game has been stopped here there's a look I think of how many guys were on the field the crowd here in Chapel Hill is seeing a all 22 from the replay Sean Clark so oh [Music] see so appalachin is trying to chase one on late [Music] perhaps and jry Patterson is having a look Sean Clark is joined by defensive coordinator Scott SLO in the discussion with this crew all right so if we count these guys we got three there got five in the middle there coach he 12 and then one at the top at 13 if he leaves so they they've got 13 one leaves I know you got by with 60% on things but that West I believe is more than 11 y it is that part I can get I'm good there so in some ways Sean Clarks not having to use a timeout to ice Ryan Co the look to check on the number of players is hey you're not kidding there's a long time to be standing there thinking about your kick right and it will be the final play of the game with two seconds left now Sean Clark may go ahead and burn one he's he's doing some pretty good litigation over there so what's Gary Patterson there's a full-blown discussion taking place I don't forget the ACC their brand new Command Center in Charlotte up town at the new Atlantic Coast Conference headquarters and you've also got replay folks here at Keenan as well there's a quick look inside the new Command Center in the Queen City after further review he was determined illegal substitution 12 players on the field on the defense that 5yd penalty will be administered from the 25 yd line line Carolina will not be charg the timeout we're going to put s seconds on clock 7 seconds on the clock so Carolina gets the timeout back amarian Hampton loses his 200 yd game I think but I do think one of the things that's interesting here is the ball was on the left half not that I know where Ryan Co wants to kick from looks like they may be moving it back to the left half Hampton now with 197 in The [Music] Bard oh these two schools are going all the way the wire again the ball's staying on left half basically they're picking up a yard out of it and not using a timeout but maybe they're going to let the clock run because they have 7 seconds on the clock now and then take a timeout got it so now another discussion that's the former Appalachian head coach Sparky Woods confirming things with Gary Patterson well this is interesting with it being first down and 7 seconds left on the clock you may end up seeing Drake May slide right go slide right be in the middle of the field and then burn a timeout those of you waiting on Florida State and Southern Miss we know they have just gotten underway at do Campbell we will send you to George sodano Orlando Franklin Marilyn Payne here in just a moment once we wrap things up here in Chapel Hill number 17 North Carolina trying to go to two and0 it's taking every tick of the clock tonight to determine this fourth meeting between the MERS and tar [Music] Hills Joey agular from Antioch California played very well tonight young man your first start for the mount News Gary patter start on the snap clock will start on the snap to your point Tim two steps right take a knee look make it a little bit easy year for Ryan Co that's why that substitution foul was somewhat significant here's May quickly to the right he'll take a knee there's the timeout 3 seconds left pretty good move of Drake Made of the r look like there was a window there that he didn't get baited into you have to think about that though right sometimes instincts take over you're like wait I could no don't do that go down so here's Ryan Co to try and win it for the Tar Heels in 2019 it was a three-point game a year ago a two-point game this is 39 yds for Carolina to win and there's the Sha Clark timeout and Co hooked it SE Clark wait until the last second I think a lot of times you want to take it early enough that the guy doesn't get a a practice kick and was never known yep tell you what we really enjoyed talking to Sean CL this week kind of guy you pull for Tim huh just a terrific terrific guy in football coach he was more nervous about going to watch his daughter's volleyball game and how she would perform than how his team would perform in this matchup and they proved it for him with the way they have fought tonight I'll say this practice kick or not I've hit two bad t- shots in a row Wes yes I don't I don't think I don't think you have but I this doesn't exactly Ure confidence 39 yd center of the field for Co snap spot he missed [Applause] it and we go to overtime at Kenan Stadium so all of that at the end and we get an extra possession or two of [Applause] football pulled left and we are still tied at 27 with the Mountaineers in the heels [Music] sorry Kelsey hle Beck and I got to go overtime tonight with Taylor tanon bomb downstairs West Durham and once again a little refresher coin toss decides offense defense are into the field each team gets possession from the opponent 25 in the first two overtimes after that two-point conversions after touchdowns in second overtime then alternating two-point tries Carolina won the toss here's Noel trying to get left and he gets seven to the 18 so appalachin here first and Nate noell tar Hills have lost six overtime games in a row 2015 was the last win appalachin is 3 and S an overtime Noel over 100 yds on 23 carat second down and three going to hand it to Noel again working all the way to the right side inside the 10 first and goal power Echoes The [Applause] Tackle and N Noel has run the football well all night but check out the block on the perimeter by Eli Wilson to get to the edge and then receivers doing work on the perimeter two runs to start this overtime for App State and really running the football at will Noel's got his 11th career 100yd game and is second in a [Applause] row first and go Noel at the left side touchdown [Applause] appalachin figures the safety could not slow down Noel I said it earlier on the touchdown pass to Eli Wilson it's option football it's dive quarterback keep then you got a guy in the flat this is just a dive portion of it give the ball to the well he cuts it backside and able to run through the contact from giovan Biggers and what an impressive opening drive of overtime for App State just three runs yep second touchdown tonight for Noel appalachin playing like a team with new life there Tim here's Hughes for the point and the kick is good so it's a 3427 Mountaineer [Applause] lead it's just a gift it's it's an inside Zone Run play and I believe agular is reading it like he did earlier the difference was this time he's giving it to the back and why not after the first two runs of overtime and Sean Clark in his group I mean I think just continuing to feed on the energy of the fact that they giv him thear heels everything they can handle and now Carolina's Got a Feeling six lead change of the night puts appalachin in front and here's may now with Hampton [Applause] they're going to hand it to Mari Hampton left side at the 20 took on one tackler and spun around to the 18 seven for Hampton Nick Ross the safety makes the play and this could look similar to what we just saw from Ab State because the drive starts that way and a run left with a big powerful back and a nice pickup Hampton back over 200 yds and he'll cut it into middle of the field and Appalachian rallies there Thomas Davis the Miami transfer who played just one ball game a season ago and honestly because of the way the fans have been set up in this Stadium a little bit of crowd noise for the Carolina offense y so made to work third and short this is Hampton left side touchdown Carolina 17 yd run for amarian Hampton AB state did it in three plays Carolina says we can match that I would just say this though going to feel a little bit nervous about Ryan Co after what happened at the end of regulation good vision kick to tie will Co point is good career high three touchdowns tonight 200 yds Plus for Marian Hampton and North Carolina and appalachin tied after the first overtime you know we had a lot of optimism tonight Joey agar's first start he had shown the ability to move the ball down the field in the air Dake May comes this saverz right and it's turned into Nate noell and am Marian Hampton Tim the Run games for both team have been outstanding which means the offensive line on both sides has has played great and get a chance to see Drake May and I would expect once again a heavy dose of Hampton here because AB State really has not had an answer all night 222 yards on the ground Carolina just under 300 yd tonight on the ground 500 yd of offense and here goes Hampton just blasting [Music] through and Carolina will have it second down and four you just see the knockback that Carolina's offense is getting the movement there's Hampton that's a first down inside the 15 how many guys did you play with get stronger as the game goes on because he is listen been around a lot of big backs this has been one of the more impressive performances I've ever seen and look the big key is he's able to get going that's why the knockback the initial knockback by the offensive line is critical because it allows for some momentum for the big 220lb bat that's Morales in motion May's going to keep it left side Drake May SC [Music] [Applause] [Applause] and just too easy it's basically Hampton Hampton Hampton and then read the backside Defender Drake May decides to keep the football and at first glance I want to make sure that finger roll happen once he crossed the goal line it certainly did and now have to go for two in this situation and going to elect to have it on the left half Hampton in the back field with May that's pesur in motion May going right turns the corner has room he will jump for the py line he didn't get in I don't believe took a big lick from favor [Applause] and he's down you know the route doesn't really Define itself they're trying to get a pick play and it kind of gets zoned off I thought he wanted to stop the corner route by throwing it back shoulder it wasn't there and so really well played by App State Drake says all right I got to try to get it on my own and it's just great Pursuit by Jordan favers who's been all over the place [Music] tonight so the two-point is not converted and now all of a sudden appalachin will get the rock here at the 25 last year 1,200 combined yards tonight over a th000 for these two Mountaineers at 489 and here's agular to work Noel stays with him in the back field you're Sean Clark what do you change here play fake agular to throw looking downfield and almost CL picked Elijah hussy on a ball intended for the tight end Eli Wilson and huzzy who's played inside a lot tonight has not been playing outside just does a good job of kind of anticipating the the wheel route that Eli Wilson was trying to run and getting over the top of [Applause] him second down and 10 for the Mountaineers Noel right side Carolina got there and noell taken down at the 22 maybe three on the play Cedric gray to stop yeah Cedric gray does a good job of playing fast and downhill you're going to see The Pursuit not only from Gray but also from Don Chapman left side of your screen Gray he's just going a knife underneath here make a play there's Chapman as well and that suit to the football forces a third and long appalachin eight of 16 tonight on third [Applause] down straight drop pressure coming back foot throw caught Davis and he will be tackled maybe a couple to the 21 Elijah hussy again well hzy coming up big in overtime here coaches talked to us about his Instinct in being a natural football player that's a second good play first one running on top of the wheel that one tackle in open space and I would say this fourth down I am not coming if I'm Carolina I'm not coming after agula I'm trying to Rally to the football not giving up a big one over my head game on the line now for the Mountaineers who are five for five tonight on fourth down snap pressure agular back foot throw Davis in complete no Flags tar Hills [Applause] win Cayman Rucker tried to move agular off his point and Tim a year ago Chase Bryce tried to hit Davis on the two-point play tonight Joey agular goes for him to keep the game alive yeah I think the mistake that App State made is they went after Elijah huzzy three times on that drive probably the best corner that Carolina has with the best instincts Jean chisik told us that he has not disappointed in terms of how he's played and he did not disappoint in overtime three big [Applause] plays Carolina wins an overtime game for the first time in their last seven tries another look and you mentioned it the pressure from Rucker and then just a good job of trusting your Technique by huzzy running underneath to undercut it don't grab locate the football see so many guys Panic at that moment grab a handful of Jersey huzzy doesn't do that and what a stop for the Carolina defense and what a night of football Drake May and the Tar Heels go to 2 and0 with Minnesota visiting Chapel Hill next week before they start ACC plea at pit in two weeks appalachin State Falls to one and one with East Carolina coming to Boom next Saturday my goodness what a night again with the Mountaineers and tar Hills here's Taylor with Coach Brown joined Now by head coach mat Brown
