I'm Roger Roy the scuba lab director we tested the apex XL fourplus reg we measured regulators ability to deliver air at a range of depths and breathing rates on the breathing simulator at dive lab in Panama City Beach Florida we also tested regs at Alexander springs in Central Florida with the team of test divers who scored them in 14 categories including ease of breathing dry operation and comfort one of test divers few complaints in last year's tests of the original excel four was the lack of a second high pressure port the feature we're glad to see on the new excel 4 plus otherwise aside from the new all-white color scheme the plus has all the attributes that made the original excel for a winner designed for cold water reliability the beefy diaphragm first stage weighs the better part of two pounds with lots of heat retaining mass and long heat exchange fins to fight ice buildup but the second stage is tiny and remarkably light just four and a half ounces on our scale that along with the reg smooth quiet breathing performance earned at the top score in the test for second stage comfort you forget even have it in your mouth one test diver commented there's no breathing adjustment but the reg still managed to take excellent scores at all depths and breathing rates in our simulator testing and divers praised its dry easy air delivery with dive all-day comfort and solid performance the excel 4 plus is our testers choice for regs over $500 [Music]
