Antique Meat Cleaver Restoration Sadly the handle is too broken to re-use I need to weld the other side too This needs sandblasting Sandblasting the meat cleaver This metal looks really old This is far from straight We need fire to straighten it out I will anneal the cleaver To take some stress off the metal And reverse any effects of hardening This process makes the metal much easier to work with I will heat it up to 878 degrees And cool it down slowly for 12 hours 12 hours later Looking so rough and beautiful A quick cleaning with the soft brass wheel Now its ready for the next process I will flatten the edge So I can make a fine new sharp edge I will make a new 30 degrees angle edge Grinding with a 320 grit disc I can do much better than this Do you like this? Wrapping the cleaver in thick stainless steel foil As tight as possible to keep air out This will minimize slag on the blade When doing the heat treatment I heat it up to 802 C for around 15 minutes Dinner is ready I will cool it down between two aluminium pieces To secure the cleaver stays straight I do two tempering cycles as well From 201 degrees to 0 in about 3 hours Now I will check the hardness of the steel No file marks when testing with HRC 50 The HRC 60 is also sliding off the edge easily The HRC 65 is making marks in the metal So hardness is between HRC60-65 witch is very good for this old cleaver Sharpening the cleaver in a 30 degrees angle This tool is meant to do rough work So im not going to make it Ninja sharp Ferric chloride 14% 12 volt 12 amp Etching the metal Now im going to etch the other side Using gauze to make a rough pattern Using 24% vinegar and salt this time PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL Lets work on a new handle 6 mm I need to grind 3mm off each handle Now I will fit the other part of the handle Just 0,15 mm too thick So we need to remove 0,15 mm material If you dont have a lathe A drill and some sandpaper works fine too Adding epoxy glue 12 hours later Grinding with grit 150 to 400 Laser engraving Meat cleaver before restoration
