animal crossing is good for the soul

[Music] so when people ask what's Animal Crossing about to be quite a tricky one to explain it's kind of a game about a village of animals you're the only human and everyone else kind of just asks you to do errands for them bring me some peaches Hellsing clear that I want my chair back that kind of stuff and some people might think well how is that a game and somehow it just is so I dug out my old GameCube and my old copy of Animal Crossing and my old Animal Crossing official memory card and thought it could be fun to plug it in and go into my old village and see if anyone remembers me I don't remember the last time I went on Animal Crossing for the Gamecube but I remember they sure as hell let you know I don't know what's about to happen but it should be interesting to say the least right I need to get this all set up and then I will begin I thought that my hood up it's not raining in here anymore it stopped raining in here I don't have to have my hood up I never liked the notion that games were just for guys never made a sense to me I would spend countless hours playing Super Mario World with my sister and we had a jolly good time together yeah only boys liked computers no girl has ever used a computer or will ever use a computer ever is what I imagined was said in the board meeting when this was all decided however it seemed that somewhere along the line game developers started to think why are we only marketing it boys there are tons of other markets with lots of potential that we're not looking at and so they did the first things were a little bit rocky yes I'm looking at you who ever developed secret-agent Barbie yes I've played secret agent Bobby no I don't want to get into why and then sure enough Nintendo cracked the code they made Animal Crossing a game literally for everyone and I say it's a game for everybody because no matter how experienced you are at games how old you are where you are in your life you had for breakfast there's there's something you're gonna get out of this game welcome to Animal Crossing the life game that's happening every minute of every day whether you're playing or not so do you want to swap fossils with me later I remember being 14 and Animal Crossing pulling me out of a real real dark deep place in my life I was 14 I just wanted to repeat I am Iowa's 14 school was hard I cried a long pool they made me cry alone it's not funny I don't know him laughing hey there were definitely times where I felt like I had no one to turn to no friends no no confidant should you have a confidant in school I don't know if that's actually I used the wrong one huh that's comp that's a different word I felt like I had no one to turn to and so I heard about this game Animal Crossing it came out in Japan in like 2001 so I read about it in Nintendo magazine and I was always so intrigued by it because I'd never played a game quite like and so eventually 14 year old PJ got it on the Gamecube and would you believe these were the friends that I needed all along that sounds so pathetic I know but my little village of dogs and birds and crocodiles they didn't judge me unless I didn't show up to their birthday party or something like that then they would be heavily judgmental but it was a place to escape to I was also in a lot of debt there's a game that teaches you a lot about debt from an early age thing you don't learn in schools I'm not saying don't go to school and only play Animal Crossing I'm just saying that you're gonna learn a thing or two so I vividly remember having a very strong connection to this game [Music] I forgot does its lil Nintendo that music man that music I'm apprehensive to press star it's flashing in red letters for me to press Start but I'm worried about what's about to happen alright I'll do it oh hello rock rock oh oh my god I remember rocker oh so you're back hoe hippie it's the 19th of March 20 28 30 in slot B's Italy now did I call my town Italy okay fire babe who are you anyway oh no here we go here we go rocker doesn't remember me how long has it been rocker how long has it been huh wow I didn't even recognize your PJ actually I totally forgot about you he's preparing Italy the entirety of Italy now go to Italy and do some work for a change why you be this way okay have I escaped is it not tell you how long it's been I think we're in the clear I thought that somebody was gonna scold me I thought somebody was gonna be like hey where you been oh hey what's up Donkey Kong Louie hey PJ how's your morning huh I haven't seen you in a dog's age where have you been holed up for the last what's a hundred and seventy nine months in years okay let's do a real quick bit of maths here 179 divided by 12 14 years it's been 14 years I've been gone for 14 years don't tell Louie up and playing other animal crossing games LLL break his heart well there's our answer that's how long it's been since so what was that 2006 I haven't played this game since 2006 hey so what can I do for you PJ he's just happy to just resume as we were I think it's really important to talk about the design of the characters when talking about animal crossing they've really nailed this cute very wholesome almost chibi style character design and it works so well in the game despite you being the only human the style translates to the animals so well why are you the only human in the game one thing I don't get I feel like boy villager would be a terrific cosplay for me because it basically is me already I mean I'm sorry but you know you know see the resemblance I think they were really smart and choosing a design like this cuz it appeals to the masses who would look at this and be like oh no no thank you or ugly I mean yeah some people might think that but they're wrong like I said it teaches you many a lesson about life sometimes your favorite villager will just up and move away without telling you just receive a letter one day saying oh sorry had to go I found a better town to live in your one has too many weeds can we also talk about how many weeds there are in Animal Crossing how many weeds are too many this many oh my god I've abandoned my town for 14 years look at all these weeds this is terrible this is a travesty despite the weeds this place isn't actually looking too bad considering it's been 14 years just need to reiterate that it's been 14 years I would say all things considered not bad not bad at all I hope you enjoyed this I wanted to make something a little bit retrospective I'm in a very retrospective mood a very nostalgic reminiscent move I've been thinking a lot about the past and the future I've been thinking a hell lot about the present and I'm just trying to navigate with the present as best I can without losing my mind completely and also the timing feels right to make something like this because there is a new Animal Crossing game out right now which I'm going to be playing a lot of I think a lot of us are going to be playing a lot of it so I wanted to say that if you're a self isolating right now if you're a quarantined at home first of all I wish you all the best to stay safe that is your top priority
