from her role as the beloved jessica fletcher on tv's murder she wrote to her vast broadway credits our first guest is one of the most accomplished actresses of our time please welcome the incomparable angela [Applause] [Music] [Applause] lansbury [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] how are you well after that introduction i'm great by the other one well it's all true well i don't know about that but anyway thank you no i'm a huge fan of yours and i have yours oh well i'm so proud of you for doing this show thank goodness somebody did a wonderful job that's so sweet i mean i really mean it and you know i don't watch daytime television you don't watch daytime tv well no i'm no but i watch you now really no you know it you never watched it at all you weren't ever never no i thought it was unholy to turn the television set on before five o'clock news really yes i said well no not really i mean what i mean is that i was always too busy yes always shooting something yeah well you saw you never stopped working you took someone you took a brief time off to and you took your kids back to ireland to raise them right a little sort of little time but you've been working non-stop your entire career yes that's very true it's very very true and i mean it really is like 50 years it's unbelievable isn't it to think really she wrote part of everyone sunday night for how long for years for 12 years 12 years every sunday night you would watch murder she wrote after 60 minutes yeah somebody figured out that i i had solved the death of about 3 000 people in the course of that 12 years which is yes that's great i love it because in the first you know 20 minutes i'd be on the phone with my sister trying to figure out who did you know and then they stupidly moved you to thursdays that was an era yeah big error yes but jessica is now going to be doing these like perry mason-esque movies right well yeah we're going to do like two-hour movies about twice a year and they'll be like the columbo and the perry mason as you say and i think they'll be more fun because they'll be able to open up the stories and make jessica's life a little more interesting and let her have more adventure you know yes mystery not so many sort of clean who did it kind of thing with the the glass ashtray i mean i'm i mean you know we had to have a we had to have a corpse as you understand every show but sometimes it was a little far-fetched i mean you know yeah most people would survive that you know right but that's about it yeah um now broadway you did so many shows on broadway [Applause] [Music] mr goldstone have a locking half a chair [Applause] have a something you missed [Applause] where you got a tony award you got four tony awards correct four tony awards yes unbelievable wow unbelievable really it's interesting because it's a whole other career and i love the broadway theater but i've gotten so far away from it over the past 12 years doing murder she wrote which was great but boy being in new york city it just fills me up with this desire to get back on the boards again you know yes and music you are doing a musical a movie musical for tv well i'm halfway there i've done a wonderful original broadway-like musical for television and uh it's mrs santa claus and it's the most delightful christmas uh perennial i hope a story for children for families for every age under the sun and i get to sing just as if i was doing a broadway show so for that reason i feel i'm halfway back to broadway now we have a little clip oh do you yes we do oh good wanna take a look sure you're playing mrs santa claus mrs santa claus would be you rolly [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] from [Music] of your stunt woman down the slide all right we'll be right back back with angela lands very so now they wanted you to get a stunt person to do that slide trick right yes well they had a stunt person and i was walking through the set one day and i saw this wonderful slide and i thought well that's not so difficult you know i mean it's ridiculous i'm in shape i'm i'm gonna go down it you know so everybody was just sort of wandering around doing their own thing on the set we weren't shooting or anything i had my costume on i went up the scaffolding i got up to the top of the slide i said well this is nothing you know when i went i got on it and i went like that and i landed flat on my back on the floor smack on my fanny and hit my head really hard and i thought i've torn it i'm finished i won't be able to finish the movie i mean i've done it you know i've done what the unpardonable they they paid a young woman a very big amount of money to do the stunt for me and i've i've ruined it and i i couldn't lay there so i sort of staggered to my feet and i got up and i said oh that's fine you know and i went to the chiropractor for three weeks and nobody ever knew about it they know now now mrs claus mrs santa claus is on december 8th and you know what you were so nice to get your cbs to give everybody in the audience a cd and i think it's so great because it's the first like movie musical on tv in what like 40 years 41 years the last time anybody you know did an original musical on television with cinderella cinderella cinderella yeah so this is the first in the last how many years musicals are so great for kids i think you know i grew up listening to nothing but south pacific and oklahoma of course and it's great to have a new one coming out and that's what's so great in new york people take their kids to the theater they see live theater they see live performance they see that they hear songs sung you know by people or not they see beauty how fun was that for you did you have a great time i did i did imagining myself as a teapot wasn't always so difficult you know after all oh no anyway it was so cute and such great songs you have in it she was such a loving sweet little woman i just adored her you know when she was talking to chip and everything i i think she was one of the great characters i've ever played and certainly sang one of the loveliest songs ever that's right now um would you mind doing a little yeah on the way out a little tale as old as time oh sure only if you'll help me [Applause] [Music] true as it can be barely even friends then somebody bends unexpectedly just a little change small to say the least both a little scared neither one prepared beauty and the beast [Applause] thank you so much it's lovely to meet you thank you up next we'll be right back we're still ahead with the number one song in the country fletcher
