[Music] one of the things that somebody just mentioned actually to two people three people mentioned was that that they'd love to hear you talk a bit about how you deal with base and processing and e queuing and compressing base in a mix like this yeah all right I don't do much it's it's weird it's a question that gets asked a lot and I don't do much and I think I think I know why but so this the base is spread out onto lots of different tracks when you switch in the 60 Hertz EQ circuit there's no boost whatsoever but there's a boost because that's what Helios is did you switch the circuit in and there's some resonance inside the circuit this is where the idea for the thump came from in the Omni channel it's just some low-end for you turns out it's a really broad EQ based around 100 Hertz even though this says 60 it's based around a hundred at 120 it's based around I think around 180 something like that and then I will generally try and find a mid-range frequency that I would describe as honky when you listen to it on its own it's almost like if you swept a wah pedal where would you get this kind of real throaty sound because that's where the tone is coming from and you really hear the notes that are going on so if we go to the hook bass [Music] right so it's a little bit of low end and a little boost now if I were gonna do that exact same thing on the Omni channel then all I would do the same thing I would pop on the thump right exactly the same thing so that is how I would treat a bass instrument period now the other thing is though I always have a pull tech on my mix buss always and it is always boosting at a hundred it's in my template it comes up boosting at around three I don't know if that's 3 dB pull techs are weird maybe it's 3 dB maybe it's just 3 out of 10 who knows but I'm boosting at are at a hundred every once in a while I'll dump that down to 60 but not not often so the low-end is on the mix bus not on individual instruments so I'm shaping the individual instrument to have the low-end I think the instrument should have but how it works in the mix compared to the kick drum which also has low end is just taken care of in the mix bus itself [Music] now remember I'm sucking out that hundred and eighteen Hertz on the kick drum that's leaving more room for the bass and I think it's also important you've got to think about what it what jobs are they doing in this song the base is very driving but there are a lot of stops and he goes up a little bit higher sometimes so that means the kick needs to be a very consistent bottom for the mix and then the bass will be more of a melodic low-end but if it disappears you don't feel like you've just lost all the weight in the mix the kick drum can carry the mix even when the bass goes up high so that's the very first thing is to define the jobs that the instruments are gonna do [Music]
