Andrew Huang: 3 Ways to Use & Abuse Your OVox Vocal Plugin

[Music] today we're playing with a Vox by waves I just wanted to show you a few of the sounds that are possible with this so let's hear it on my song summertime feeling first let me just play you the raw vocal because it's very bad definitely not even hitting any notes just just listen to this I'm living for this summertime feeling high so yeah that's what I'm putting through oh box just over ox nothing else sending it some MIDI notes [Music] that's pretty wild and transformative I've got two of the synth algorithms on now let me turn one of them off and I'll just play you what some of the other ones sound like so this is the classic one actually I've got some effects on there too because there's seven built-in effects let me just turn those off and we can hear these more raw here's an algorithm called Churchill electrified nose attacks now each of these algorithms has a bunch of controls you can sweep through different waveforms add or take away harmonics [Music] the formant filter is really fun web web web we're pretty sweet I like the sound of two on at a time and pitch shifting the second one and octave down or maybe two octaves down even it can sound cool to automate these parameters too [Music] it's like a vibrato or a tremolo but it's not it's trim on the wave shape and the formant I'm gonna use just one plug-in on my voice is just one for my voice I have nothing else on my vocal in this demo just a Vox it's mainly a vocal synthesizer but it also has a built-in EQ and a bunch of different effects that you can use so like in that last example I have a reverb delay chorus compressor and limiter and then there's also a bunch of modulation possibilities in here LFO sequences to envelopes and then you can use data from your voice to control things so like the volume here pitch and the formant of your vocal can all be assigned to modulate other parameters in this case I only had the amplitude controlling the reverb and delay signal so that it kind of ducks the effect and then when there's no singing the effect increases in volume there's two synth engines one two and these are being controlled right now by these MIDI notes that I'm sending to the plug-in but if I actually sing something we can switch the note source for a MIDI two voice and then it'll track the pitch of my voice which you can fine tune a bit so we'll actually track your pitch pretty closely if you want to just sing and transform your singing rather than playing a melody in with MIDI there's also this built-in arpeggiator there's also there's a note mapper feature where you can choose specific notes or just a key that you want to tune your vocal to and I've been loving this for some like vocoding chord melodies even though this is mainly a vocal synthesis plug-in there's so much fun you can have with it on instruments so I'm gonna put this drum loop through it I've got this MIDI on another channel being sent to ov ox and so we're kind of like vocoding this drum loop now because oh box tracks the volume pitch and formant of your audio input and it has other effects built into it we can even remove the synth element of it and just use it as an effect controlled by the sound that you're putting into it so for instance here's a delay and reverb being controlled by the loudness of the drums now because Oh boxes pitch tracking is so good it's really fun to use a pitched instrument as a synth controller so here's a couple examples of me doing that with a guitar [Music]
