most of this morning [Music] Baga our Father in heaven how we bless you and honor you for your love and kindness and your tender mercies O Lord our Lord how excellent is thy name and all the earth we bless you for meeting us this morning with with new mercies great is your faithfulness thank you for being faithful to us even when we've been so unfaithful to you and become this morning earlier to give you a name the praise and the glory and the honor first truly you were there did he praise from the rising of the Sun to the going down of the same your name is worthy of all the praise and in spite of our circumstances in spite of our situations we've come to bless and honor your holy and your righteous name we shout hallelujah to your name and now a strong god I ask afresh that you breathe the right time together we need to hear from you we need a word from you if we can't hear from you we won't know what to do and so we're wanting you more and more each day to show us a perfect way for barriers no other way that we can live have you in this place on this morning and we give your name the praise in advance in the name of Jesus do we ask these things and all of God's children said a man let's praise God for the Alabama A&M gospel choir my mind one of my favorite choir [Music] they're gonna minister to us later on in this service I want you to get your Bibles this morning and turn to the book of Acts and the twelfth chapter of the book of Acts I want to jump right into this word the book of Acts the Acts of the Apostles or the acts of the Holy Ghost and you found the book of Acts this morning I want you to find with me the twelfth chapter of the book of Acts Acts chapter 12 we thank God all the men and women who share the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ all the ministers the gospel here with us those who are seated in the pulpit and those who in the congregation think of all the clergy was sharing and to the Deacons who are with us and all of you my father's children it is a blessing to be here in the house of the Lord Acts chapter 12 and for the benefit of brevity in the sake of our subject I want you to come with me this morning to the 21st verse of the twelfth chapter of the book of Acts Acts chapter 12 and we'll take a look at verse number 21 and several of the following verses Acts chapter 12 verse 21 and they reached the slay and upon a set day Herod arrayed in royal apparel sat upon his throne and made in oration unto them and the people gave a shout saying it is the voice of a god and not of a man and immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he gave not God the glory and he was eaten of worms and gave up the ghost god bless you may be seated verse 22 says and the people gave a shout saying it is the voice of a god and not of a man and immediately their angel of the Lord smote him because he gave not God the glory and he was eaten of and gave up the ghost this morning for a few moments I just want to talk simply from this thought and the worms ate him and the worm ate him yeah look at Labour's say the worms ate him my sister and my brothers I want to preface the message by saying to us that the text before us presents a quite unique challenge for those of us who have an affinity with popular theology it presents quite a challenge to those of us who are seriously engaged in popular theology because it tends to contradict what many of us like to espouse about God for we live in a day certainly that lifts and promotes the blessings of God in the lives of children of God seemingly we ever return we hear messages about prosperity and success and the favour and blessings of God and the honor shadow of a doubt we do know that God is a God of favor that God is a God who does take pleasure in the prosperity of his people Jesus did say I've come that you might have a life and that you might have it more abundantly but I believe my brothers and my sisters that we are falsely misrepresenting the totality of the essence of God with popular theology I believe that we are falsely misrepresenting God because we tend to suggest that no matter how you live your life that you will always be the recipient of the benevolence of God we tend to promote a gospel which lifts prosperity rather than spiritual discipline we tend to suggest that no matter how iniquitous I activities are or no matter how trifling and no matter how full of duplicity we may become and we may have within us that God is a God who will bless us in spite of ourselves I do believe that God looks beyond our faults and God does see our needs but I believe we falsely misrepresent God when all we want to talk about is what God will do through us and do for us rather than understand that the same Bible which talks about the favor of mercy and grace of God that same Bible tells us that God is a God who reigns on the just I wish I'll take the brakes off now as well as the unjust that same God that tells us that God will withhold no good thing from those of us who walk upright also says that he is a jealous God and that we should have no other God before him sisters and brothers we falsely misrepresent God when we make people believe that God were perpetually bestow his favor upon us irregardless of what we do what we expect and how we live our lives I want to suggest to you the same God who will open up the windows of heaven and pour out blessings that we won't have room enough to receive that that will come and I can become circumstances when God will literally shut off the heavens and say you can pray about prosperity and success until you blue in the face you can have oil from your weave to your toe jams but if you do not meet the necessary prerequisites and conditions to walk under the shadow of the Almighty God then the same God who blesses us is the same God if you're not careful who can kick you to the curb I know you want to hear about this aspect of God I know you don't to talk about this kind of God because we want to talk about the mercy and graces of God but the text teaches us that the same God who can open the heavens is the same God who can stop the heavens but because of our sinfulness and because of our flesh and because of our individuality and because of our desire to lift our wheels over above the will of God that God can literally say don't say another word don't call my name don't talk to me don't give me anything because of my anger because of my wrath the text tells us that God has anthropomorphic qualities in that God can get so angry just like you and I when God says talk to the hand called the ain't listening when God says I'm tired of you treat me in a kind of way when God says I'm tired of being your part-time lover who's all the time I hear from you is when you want something from me God can become so angry when God says not only when I stop my favor but I will deposit my wrath in the earth will Oh sisters and brothers such is the case in our text this afternoon at the time of this text look that great Gentile physician talks about a family that was important to the New Testament era and this family in my opinion was one of the most influential families of New Testament times this family is called the Herodian family we understand that since the birth of Jesus and even prior to the birth of Jesus the Herodians were an influential family who had enjoyed the favor of God ever since the reign of that Emperor Julius Caesar when he had elevated any mean Antipater become to become the governor of Jewish provinces there in Palestine and Jerusalem this favor began upon the Herodian family while y'all gonna help me preach him this fella it'll mean Antipater was a shrewd politician who not only enjoyed the favor of julius caesar but after Julius Caesar's assassination by Brutus and Mark Antony he also stayed in the good graces of the succeeding Emperor's whenever mean Antipater had enjoyed the favour of Caesar Brutus and Antony he elevated his son Herod the Great to become king over Jerusalem and Judah in provinces this fellow Herod the Great elevated their perhaps in 37 BC to become the king of Jerusalem was very influential at the time of the birth of Jesus some of you who are familiar with that that story would remember that Matthew 2 says about that time wise men had come from the east to Jerusalem to worship this new baby Jesus well Herod had gotten intimidated because he had been appointed King by the Romans but Jesus had been anointed king by the righteous he was so paranoid that even though he had married a sister a Mac of being descent by the name of Mary and Mary amny when he found out about Cleopatra's rise because his wife shared the same lineage as Mary amny they were Makka bein that he had his wife Mary amny killed he also then killed three of her brothers he killed her mother-in-law because of the close resemblance that she shared with his wife Mary amny he killed his wife three of her brother-in-law's and he also killed his mother-in-law now fellas I'm not trying to give you all any ideas I'm just giving you the history of the Herodian family he had his mother-in-law killed he was so paranoid that two of his sons Alexander an Aristo beulas he had them put to death because he felt that they were trying to commit treason trying to usurp his authority so vex was elet was ever the great that when he heard about the birth of Jesus and when he was mocked by the wise men who did not return to him after they worship Jesus he issued an edict similar to that either issued in the Exodus by the Pharaoh who felt that the Israelites would try to overthrow Egyptian reign that he issued an edict Herod there to have all baby boys who were 2 and under killed about that time the angel the Lord appeared to Mary and Joseph and told them to flee Jerusalem and Palestine and go in Egypt and hide in Egypt unto her birth the greater had died or you're with me here Herod the Great was so vile it killed Alexander and Arista Bueller's his sons and then he issued a decree that at the moment that he died he wanted a slaughter throughout Jerusalem he wanted a hundreds of people slaughtered just to ensure that when he died that was weeping throughout Palestine this was the case of having a Herod the Great when he killed his sons Alexander and Arista beulas he had a grandson whose name was Harold a group of the first the grandson of achillion Arista beulas and when they heard about how he was trying to assassinate his entire family they sent his grandson to Rome to flee the paranoia of his granddaddy what he wrote a group of the first the son of achillion Aristobulus the son of Herod the Great the son of Idi Amin Antipater when Herod Agrippa the first was in Rome he was a Roman childhood student with chaos who eventually became Claudius who became the Roman Emperor are y'all gonna help me preach it well his grandson here but a group of the first was elevated by his child friend Gaius and Claudius and Caligula when they became the Roman Emperor and sold the Herod in our text this afternoon is herod agrippa the first the son of a killing or is the builders the grandson of herod the great the great grandson of giving me and Antipater this family enjoy favor for four generations for four generations since the birth of Jesus to the birth of the New Testament church has God allowed the Herodian family to be favored but they whatever a group of the first became the Emperor became the king rather God says I'm tired of blessing this family and this family will not acquiesce to my wheel I'm tired of elevating these people and they refuse to acknowledge me as king of kings and Lord of lords and so what I'm gonna do rather than allow my favour to be upon this family I'm gonna allow my wrath - Victor it's hot against this family and I'm gonna kill one of the people who are part of this Herodian family because I'm tired of blessing this family Oh Sushil and brothers when I thought about how God is so angry what Herald a group of the first my heart went up to God my heart was more positive toward God because I understand that I don't want God to ever take his hand a favor off of my life is there anybody around this house this afternoon can testify that I'd rather have anything to leave but I can't make it without your favor God allowed me to be terminated that's alright take my car get rid of my family foreclose on my home but whatever you do please don't take your favor cuz if you got I've got if I got your favor I can get our house with co-op credit if I got your favor I can work in a job I didn't qualify for if I got your favor I can make a C in calculus when I deserve an Elfa if I can walk in your favour I know I can make it even student aid and financial aid is acting up is there anybody on this aisle can testify God don't ever take your favor but in this text here with a group of the first brand saw the song of a killing Arista beulas grandson of Heba the great great grandson of getting me and Antipater God says I'm gonna let my words come and eat you up I'm gonna let my worms eat up my favor and I had to ask a question of the text what did this fellow do and what do we have the propensity and the proclivity of doing that will cause God to take his hand of favor and then manifests wrath in our lives when I read this text I saw that here with a group of the Furze did three things and if we're not careful if we do and repeat the mistakes of herod agrippa defers we also can become the recipients of God's wrath rather than his favor what did he do three things number one the first thing that heaven a group of the first did that calls God to eat up his favor and made the worms eat him number one he was focused on persecution Oh y'all will help me preach it I said he was focused on persecution look at verse 1 of Acts chapter 12 acts 12 verse 1 says 'now about that time Herod the King stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church here Herod is persecuting the church verse 2 of Acts 12 says that he killed James the brother of John with the sword verse 3 says and because he saw that it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter also then were the days of unleavened bread verse 4 says and when he had apprehended him Peter he herod put him Peter in prison and delivered Peter to book wardens of soldiers to keep Peter and tending after Easter to bring Peter before to the people here herod agrippa the Furze has fixed the certain of the church he's killed James the brother of John one of the sons of Zebedee with the sword and a text says because he's so that it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter as well and so he incasa rates Peter after he has beheaded James and then delivers Peter over to sixteen different soldiers to watch him so Peter can be assassinated after the east of Easter Festival has passed and brothers and sisters what really got me here is I want to understand the nuances of the behavior and the psychology of herod agrippa the first what is it that has sickened his pathology what is it that has darkened his eyes toward the church what is it that is causing him now to focus on persecution and so ruling in order to understand what caused him to act in such a persecuting and the violent form I began to study the psychology of behaviorism and Sigmund Freud and BF Skinner both seems to suggest something about our behavior Skinner says our cycle our psychology and our behavior is out of a two-fold perspective Skinner says that we that our behavior is the sum total number one of our genetics or our biology Skinner says that many times what we do we do it because it's in our gene pool our behavior can determine our actions in other words a lot of us are foolish because we got foolish genes a lot of us can do stupid stuff because you had stupid ancestors I know that's a bad word but that's the best way I can put it and so our biology or our genetics can have a negative factor on what we become all y'all gonna help me preach here I never shall forget a few weeks ago when under and I took the baby to the doctor and the doctor beginning to ask questions about both of our medical histories and the histories of our families wanting to know who had cancer who had diabetes and anybody had blood pressures anybody die at alright young age and I began to ask about cancer and both of our families and then she asked us a question about mental illness in our family did we have any mental deficiencies in there crazy people in our family and then Andre looked at the pediatrician to suggest you're gonna need a whole tablet to write down the folks that's crazy in his family and then I was offended and taken aback and said you can't laugh at my family cuz I know some of your uncle's I know some of your cousins as well you got some Looney Tunes in your family wait wait don't laugh at my wife don't laugh at the crazies and our families because a lot of y'all got some idiots in your family as well you got some fools in your family as well and it's very possible that your biology can have a negative impact on what you have become Skinner says your biology can cause your behavior to be negative but also your sociology what you have been exposed to he said that it is possible to have two children who have the same parents the same chromosomal connection ate the same cornflakes for breakfast flat baloney and cheese sandwich for lunch and heart marks for dinner wore the same clothes same parents but when they mature one of them got sense and the other is alluded to and you wonder what if it was open genetics and we got the same blood and chromosomes then would it be so that we act the same way he says no you can take a child who had a bad genetic gene pool and who perhaps had crack in their systems and an alcoholic father and allowed them to be adopted at three weeks of age and put them in a stable Christian home and although they had bad biology if they get the right proper sociology then they can have a positive impact on their lives or y'all with me here that's why some of y'all got brothers and sister same momma same daddy but y'all totally different are y'all with me here and what disturbed me was this is heaven acting out of his biology could it be that he's not persecuting the church because his great-grandfather enjoyed the favor of Caesar because the persecution is he persecuting the church because his granddaddy Herod the Great was a persecutor is he persecuting the church because his daddy Irish turbulence died violently was there a demon in their genetics is he acting out of his biology or is he acting out of his sociology how was the economic sociology when as a child he went to Rome rather than Jerusalem was it inspired you or whether his sociology and what I hear God saying is this skinners statement about behaviorism it's true but listen don't ever allow your biology or aren't your sociology to be used as an excuse for you acting outside the will of God in other words I don't care if your daddy was a rolling stone or your mama wants to promiscuous it matters not how many folk in your family are crazy if you allow the favor of God and the will of God to overtake your life then it matters not about what is going on in your lineage perhaps you have four generations of people who've been on welfare perhaps nobody in your whole gene pool has ever finished college but what God is saying don't use that as an excuse for you to justify your sorry behavior because you can say if any man be in Christ he is a new creature perhaps I was born with bad genes but now it's time to be born again are y'all gonna help me here and it's not even about your sociology it matters not about your social economic status or whether you were born in the ghetto or born in the country it matters not where you came from if you let the Holy Spirit take over your life and say God search me and when you find anything in me that's not like it should be take it out and strengthen me I don't want to be like Herod trying to be a crowd pleaser because I have a low self esteem and so I do negative stuff because I want other folk to enjoy me and affirm who am never was so messed up that he wanted to receive the acclaim and the accolades and the commendation for people and now he's living his life to please others let me put a quarter in the meeting park right there a whole lot of y'all in this house right now don't live your life for yourself the other young lady around here instead of living your life to make you happy you're trying to make junebug and ray-ray and boo boo happen and what god is saying don't live your life to make a Negro or Negro it happened if you've not filed his will and just because you're pleasing him does not mean you're pleasing God I wish our help me here because any time a man has something he really loves he owned it before the public as his own he'll spend money on it he'll let everybody know this is what I love if he has a dog that he really loves don't have to be a pig all right why LA or German Shepherd could be a wanna I three-legged mutt but if he loves that dog he'll get shots for it he'll get a tag for it he'll let everybody know this is my dog if you have a car that it really loves don't have to be a GT continental don't have to be a being George a it could be old beat-up Ford or Chevrolet or what my granddad I call a Deuce and a quarter but if he loves that car he'll get a registration he'll get insurance he let everybody know this is my car if he wants to go fishing legally in the state of Georgia has to go to the appropriate counter office and pay nine or eleven dollars to get our license to go and catch catfish bream and bass young lady if that man is spending money on that chaiwalla you better make him spend some for you if he got a license for that catfish you better make him get one for you and say I refuse to live my life trying to please you if I'm displeasing God and if I gotta be by myself then I'm happy with Jesus alone because I've learned I can do bad all by my tell somebody don't live your life to please fall and some of y'all can't shot right now because you want people to receive you and you want people to think you ever died and spooge you and sophisticated but you got to excuse me if I get loud it's not because I'm uncouth it's not because mama didn't give me proper home training it's not because I'm not learned it's not because I don't know how to read and write tough but when y'all see me get loud I'm sorry that makes you mad I'm sorry if I'm not always not back to then pedagogy called I'm sorry I don't always dot every I and cross every T but when I think about the goodness of Jesus and all he's done for me my soul cry and so here and so here at him Hera ever done Herod Herod Herod his focus on persecution I don't know if it was biological or sociological but he's doing the same thing that his granddaddy did his mama died violently his daddy died violently his granddad it was violent his great grand get it gotten power because he was violent and you know we got to be careful that we don't ever become what we despise you gotta know what's in your lineage I believe as a boy here I probably said I never be like my granddad I never died like my dad I'll never be a persecutor because they were persecutors and I saw what persecution brought to my family you gotta be careful and no one's in your lineage so you can know what to pray for I remember the poem ever my daddy came home Oh 25 26 years ago I I could hear his voice doing who left the lights on downstairs did I'll tell you when you leave one room and go on another room you cut the lights off in the exiting room before you enter the entering room don't have two lights on and both rooms and you're not in that room you don't have the radio on in one room and the TV on in the other room don't you know money don't grow on trees and I told myself when I get growing gonna be cold up and all tripping and hype about who got the lights on and who got the TV on it don't make no sense then it's so mean that is so crazy I always come in the house listen up about the lights in one room in the TV in the other room in the radio another one when I get growing I said when I get my own shooting I promise I'm gonna be loving and God and if the lights on didn't water I'm gonna tell my son son to turn the lights off I'm not gonna come in the house person and hollering about light spin on in one room and Ray on another room and TV on another oh that's what I said 25 years ago and now I find myself 25 years later coming into the house come on while you got the lights on in one room while you got the TV on why you got the PlayStation on in the other room I wish somebody helped me preacher you gotta be careful that you don't become what you decide somebody know what I'm talking about you've got to know what's in your lineage so you can know what good right if we be honest don't have you ever grown up and say you know I find myself silence it like my momma and so he hammer the group of the first is persecuting the church he's focused on persecution rather than peace and now the text says that he came for an examination in verse number nineteen when he came to examine those who had been keeping Peter after the angel released Peter that he examined the keepers and commanded that the keepers be put to death now he's so mad when the angel released Peter that he went back trying to find out how did Peter get released that was the Roman law the code of Justinian which suggested that if any prisoner ever escaped that the guards of the jailers had to take the place of the prisoner here because Peter has been released by the Angels Hera commands and anybody who was keeping him be put to death he's so violent in verse 20 says that when they got from Judea to Caesarea that he was highly displeased with them because of tyre and sidon and they came with him with one Accord he's still acting crazy whenever you're focused on persecution you own your way that calls him the worm to eat you up but not only was he focused on persecution secondly the second problem with Hitler group the first was he was full of pride I was shown here I'm almost finished I said he was full of pride look what the text says verse 21 says and upon a set date herod arrayed and royal apparel set on his throne and made an oration unto the people verse 22 said and the people gave a shock saying it is the voice of God and not an angel this set day was the day that all throughout the Greco Roman Empire it had been set aside as a day of festival to give homage and honor to Caesar the Emperor there in Rome Josephus in his antiquities tells us that Herod is dressed in a glittering glowing Apparel made of silver that when the king of the lunar system make contact with his apparel it gave the image of the glory of God or y'all with me here and he was more concerned with receiving the praises of men that he wanted to be elevated above the level of the Emperor Caesar so rather than bow and respect Caesar rather than do the right thing to give Jesus to praise here heaven is more concerned about his own honor and his own glory in so much that the people elevated him to godlike status and he enjoyed reading his press clippings brothers and sisters let me pause parenthetically to suggest that you've got to be careful that the higher God elevates you to never believe the hype I wish Oh help me preach it you've got to understand that the more God elevates you and the higher God takes you the more dependent and the more reliant on God we should become because the higher you go that means the further you can fall and so when God elevates you rather than get caught up with narcissism and egotism and elitism you all say God I thank you because I will not be where I am if you had not brought me here you've got to understand that God despises a proud look as a matter of fact the Bible said that pride goes just before destruction it goes just before the fall the Bible says as a matter of fact that God get this resisteth the proud that little means in Greek that he puts his finger on those who are prideful so that they cannot move they cannot progress that he literally stagnates those who are arrogant conceited and full of ego and you know what that's so much egotism in the church people feel because they have made it a certain corporate level because they've left the hood and now are enjoying suburbia before they got a degree on the wall before they got a position in the church before they received three levels and a period in front of their name a few letters and periods after their names their whole spirit has change and you know I know a whole lot of folk like that who it seemed that before they got the blessings of God they had a sweet spirit they had a sense of humility about them but now since God has promoted them and has given them favor they look and walk around the church like the smitten Foca like they're too cute and stuck-up to shake hands and agree with people but you got to understand everybody that God sends to the church may not know how to conjugate a verb ain't about who God sends to the church may not have two cars to drive everybody that God sends to church may not have a split-level with 14th century French Provincial furniture all through that split-level or high def and plasma TVs all throughout the crib some folk will come to church banner getting along barely making it don't know the difference between a subject a verb agreement but the same God who loves the uneducated and the unprofessional just like he does the professional and don't you let the blessings of God calls you to look down on people and forget from which to caller you've got to understand when God blesses you you all cry you know I am an affect you all shop not more because when you didn't have nothing the same God who blessed you then is the same God who blesses you now and you need to be able to say I've got to give him praise because what I am he made me and what I have he gave me what I know God taught me and where I am the Lord brother look at some and say anything about you I hear people say all the time you know what people pray the prayer and it's such a pseudo spiritual prayer Lord keep me humble let me tell you something you need to stop praying that prayer a child of God has no business praying Lord keep me humble trust me you don't want God to humble you the Bible says humble yourselves before the hand of God and then do see that he will exalt you see it's better for you to humble yourself then for God to humble you cut away God offers you you may not like the way God I'm with you I wish somebody'd I'm talking my guard got away humble in you and make the white meat show God got away humble you with heart and sit down god I gotta where I'm going you gotta embarrass you before the public but it said if you just keep yourself humble and keep your head level and don't read your press clippings and don't thank you all that because you made the beans listen keep yourself under the hand of God that God got away of giving you favor he resisted the proud but he gives grace to the humble so the more humble you become the more favored God gives you the law you take yourself to higher God will take you if you humble yourself he'll exalt you but if you exalt yourself he'll bring you down [Applause] so Herod [Applause] Herod wanted to be deified and so God sent the worm to eat him he was focused on persecution he he he he was full of pride but there are life and finally the worms ate him it because he failed to give praise I'm gonna close on this when I said he was focused on persecution he was full of pride but third he failed to give praise look in verse 21 and said that first one to two it says and the people gave a shout saying it is the voice of a god and not of a man verse 23 says and immediately look at that look and turn immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he gave not God the glory and he was eaten of worms and he gave some commentators say that an owl appeared and rather than him giving out that duck saw that God allowed the angel not the devil God literally one of the angels own health and that he had an excruciating pain in his bowels and after five days Herod died y'all know me I got an inquiring man I wanted to know what what was the technical malady that killed Herod as I did a little exegesis and some extra biblical reading trying to identify what was the exact thing that killed Kevin one writer says there was something called peritonitis which was a perforated appendix or y'all would mahir some others say that somebody had put in his drink arsenic poison one commentator says he had an acute in just an old obstruction our young feel me here three or four riders said he had a rupture of his hydration cyst and when the hydration cyst ruptured for five days he had excruciating pain in his bowels and not the five days because the cyst had ruptured he died and I was going through all of the different things in conjecture about what killed Herod I asked God God what was it I killed it and God says why are you going through all that hydration system preparation appendix and arsenic pause in it he said I told you what killed him I sent angel that's all you need to know you can say well who shot junior it don't matter about how he died I killed and when I killed him I let the worms eat him up from the inside his hair tightness and he died well God why did you do that he said do a tail travel dress down streaming faith did I kill them because he failed to give me glory is it possible when you pull out your checkbook shimmering nothing is dying it's bearing from the inside because God has put the worms is it possible that your pain song for your marriage is me bikini the thrill is gone because God was allowed to worms TWP the honey that was left in your move is it possible that academically you're struggling because God has sent the worms and no and your academic prowess have to give difference to the end eunuch worms there God has sent to get your attention that's why the writer said y'all set your affections on things which are above that's why Jesus said in several amount seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and I heard him say that all of the things shall be
