hi it's mike with asktractormike.com if you watch my videos you know I normally do tractor videos in this video today does apply to tractor owners or to zero turn orders or off-road vehicle owners anybody that hauls fuel back and forth to their vehicle whether it be a tractor or a zero-turn golf road vehicle you've probably got at least one of these maybe some of them are yellow you all fuel back and forth and when you tip them up they don't pour they just the fuel just kind of trickles out it's because they need a vent and we're going to show you how to put one on today that's one problem we're gonna solve the other problem we're gonna solve is with a product that's made by my sponsor wd-40 company and it's a product that I keep on my workbench all the time and use it to clean fuel tanks let's talk about that first you know if you're like me I put my fuel tanks in the backseat of my pickup truck and haul them to the gas station and then I pull them out fill them up and leave them in the back of the truck on the way home so I don't get fumes well it sometimes they they they just get nasty and if you want to clean them the best product I found is a wd-40 product that I keep on my workbench it's called WD 40 specialist machine and engine degreaser foaming spray and it works like a miracle cleaning up old fuel tanks with fuel diesel or gas residue all over here's an example today this is a diesel tank that I carry back and forth and follow up my tractor with it was left at this place by the previous owners it was nasty spray a little wd-40 machined an engine degreaser on a rag wipe it on let it set and then wipe it off and you'll be amazed at how to clean up a nasty fuel tank well now today let's talk about how to put a vent in one of these and it's a 10-minute process cost under $10 and it's very very simple to put a VIN in our fuel tank we're going to need this product right here it's made by a company called haltech and I'll put the part number down in the description below you can google it you'll find them all over the internet what it is is a tire valve for big trucks and it's made out of metal heavy built with rubber grommets on both sides by order this product off Granger it came in a package of five for like eight or nine bucks and because I picked it up at the local Granger it was Freight free I've seen them as low as 97 cents but the Freight will be way more than that so I'll put the part number down below you can get them anywhere but it's just a tire valve now once we get this product it's got a cap on it that we're gonna take off and save for use later it's got a rubber grommet that we'll use later it's got a washer then we'll use later and the nut that we'll take off now before we put this on there's one more thing we've got to do to it because it's a tire valve inside it is a core then we're going to take out with one of these little tools that removes a tire core there that's what we're taking out right there and so I can see you we've got just a tire valve with no guts in it now to install this we're gonna need a long wire twice as long as our bucket is wide at least it needs to fit easily through the tire valve but it needs to be heavy enough we can put a kink in it and hold the tire valve in place while we install it we need a drill with a 1/2 inch drill bit and we need a little adjustable wrench that's all we need now I left a little bit of fuel in the bottom of this tank and that's because I'm gonna drill into the tank and I want a little bit of fuel in there to pick up any plastic shavings that come out and I'm gonna dump that out in the driveway we're gonna drill a 1/2 inch hole on the flat side here where the event should have gone from the factory once we have that a hole drilled we're gonna feed our wire back through that a hole to the main opening of the gas can or diesel can now we're going to feed the valve through the wire then we're going to put a little kink in it to keep it in place to about that halfway point we want to get it far enough on when we pull the wire back to place the valve in place it'll still be there will still be a little bit sticking out of the back of the fuel tank so we can pull it back out now we're going to pull the tire valve back through so that the threads show not the back of the fuel tank now we're gonna put our grommet down over the stem and then our washer and finally the nut we're gonna pull on the wire so we can tighten the nut once you get it started process is almost done we're gonna tighten that nut up pretty tight when we're all done with that we're going to pull our wire out and we have a nice looking and functioning vent now we're gonna put our silver cap back on and we're good to go when it's time to dump fuel in our lawnmower or a tractor we'll just take that silver cap off and the fuel will go right in a whole lot faster than it used to now if you're worried about losing that silver cap any entire stem cover will fit it it's it's not special if the threads the threads are staying we have clean fuel tanks with vents on them we're ready to go get fuel and get started knowing if you'd like to
