that's right Marie and Cherie wait'll you see what we caught some of these guys doing the number you have reached is not in service wondering why Ameritech service is so bad here's part of the problem this truck should be on his way to an important job but he's on a path to nowhere this guy's hiding out when he should be working wait'll you see what's going on behind these steamed up windows what's he holding while the phone company has you on hold and the guy pulling into this driveway he's not going to fix your phone maybe the bad man thing they did it a bad bad thing they're all Ameritech slackers and the problem solvers busted him on the job I have no idea what you're talking about his name is Bill Reister and he knows exactly what I'm talking about when you see the outrageous routine he's getting away with it'll make you feel and remember that name bill it'll be important later in the story for months now the problem solvers have been getting phone calls from frustrated viewers like you you're telling us about Ameritech workers out there goofing off while tens of thousands of people are waiting for phone service so we took our undercover cameras on the hunt and did we get an eyeful here's one of the hiding spots you told us about behind an apartment building in Southfield this guy isn't here to fix these wires he sat for an hour like a statue with his hand glued to the steering wheel next morning he's back again it's hard to see through the glare but he was sawing logs at the truck with a fogged up windows another sleeper we saw this guy snooze for a whole hour right after a half-hour lunch break wake up sleepyhead nappy time is over time to step outside and water the grass busting remember this truck slipping into the darkness it's another Ameritech hidey hole this one in Pontiac and it's a real beauty check it out yourself a secluded dead-end road with a place to slip through on this foggy morning we caught three trucks hunkered down in the mist one of them stayed for over two hours a few days later we spot these two chilling out at 8 o'clock in the morning if you're one of those people waiting for a phone wouldn't you want these guys on the job after watching them for a whole hour we decide to pay him a visit they're in for the surprise of their lives as I stepped around the corner first thing I hear is oh oh hey guys the Fox do problem solvers or why you guys are sitting back here we were just getting all our work together for today oh yeah how long does that take well you've been down here an hour then I asked these guys do you really think it's fair that you're hiding out while so many people are waiting for phone service sir you don't even right now they fire up their rigs and scatter now that I've made their day let's get back to Bill Reister you can count on your phone bill coming but not this bill he's supposed to be fixing and installing your phones but you won't believe what he's getting away with here's Bill's house what's wrong with this picture well look what's tucked away in the driveway his work truck three times in one week we saw him stash his bucket truck and head off to play on Tuesday the trucks at for three hours on Wednesday for four hours and Friday get this his truck was in the driveway for five hours that's the day we called out the troops including sky Fox to see where he was going Sasa we all have a day when we're not working as hard as we should be but this guy's way out of line Friday morning he ditches the truck a few minutes before 9:00 he's only been on the clock for two hours next stop a woman's house they head off together in a pickup truck remember you should be out there fixing your phones they stopped at a restaurant they stopped at a party store next thing we know they're blasting down i-94 the pickup finally comes to rest in a big parking lot where can you believe it they're going to the mall while he's on the clock on the very day Bill and his companion are out gallivanting this lady's waiting for her phone to be fixed for advice for Ameritech keep an eye on you guys pay attention to your customers we're the ones paying their wages billon his date stayed in the mall for two hours then jumped back on the freeway he dropped his friend at home retrieved the bucket truck and finally finally went back to work but even then he didn't do much we watched him drive and diddle around for a couple of hours a few days later he got that dreaded visit from the problem solvers I have nothing to say I don't even know what you're talking about I asked bill why he keeps stashing his work truck in the driveway I don't do that I was talking about we've got it on tape I have no idea what you're talking about you know it gets really good listen how he tries to wiggle off the hook you don't even know who I am you don't decide you don't even know who I am what is your head my name it it's ya Tim Shady you're not Bill wrister no you don't even know who I am don't even go there get that camera off my face okay bill that's your story but I don't think it's gonna fly with the boss I want to point out that Ameritech has 16,000 workers in Michigan now we've shown you a few of them goofing off and we assume that most of them are honest hard-working employees after seeing promos for this story this is what an Ameritech spokesman had to say as with any organization of this size there may be individuals whose actions or performance do not meet company's standards or expectations we will investigate and we'll take appropriate action a few weeks back there were about 46,000 people waiting for up to two months for repairs or new phones in Michigan now Varitek says they've cut the backlog by about 30,000 and they say they reduced the wait time to
