What I really don't understand is why the residents of this area aren't given some type of US/Canada pass. It makes no sense to me that a schoolbus needs to go through border regulations twice a day. Rules are great, but sometimes when it makes a situation like this ridiculous, there should be some exceptions.

finally, a story I can tell.

Last month, after an interview in Bellingham, WA, I had enough hours of the day to visit nearby Point Roberts, WA. Obviously this meant I had to cross at Blaine, (painlessly, thank goodness) and go through Surrey and Tsawwassen, BC. The moment I entered PR, I accidentally muddled up my words with US border patrol, which led to nearly 45 nerve-wracking minutes in questioning like "why the heck would you want to visit point roberts? you don't even know anyone there!" what didn't help was that I'm an Aussie-American with dual citizenship, so having an American passport and an Australian accent didn't help my situation much either. eventually they let me through with no consequences.

I spent the next few hours wandering around the coast. Place is so isolated, it's almost creepy. the parks don't seem very well-cared for, and compared to the busy town of Tsawwassen just across the border, the place seemed just...dead. I tried to chat some people up, only to not find any townspeople, but just other Canadians visiting. Thankfully crossing back through Canada back to the US was less painful...but it still creeps me out to think about the amount of crap people go through just to go to school, buy groceries, see friends, etc.

When the cameras aren't there, I bet they completely ignore that border phone.

God living there, especially for decades, sounds like a nightmare.

Insane to have to make a phone call to the border whatever just to cross every time. You would think they could give each citizen there some sort of card that just shows they are from there, problem solved
