America's MOST TRADITIONAL AMISH...The WHITE TOPPERS of Pennsylvania's Big Valley...Kishacoquillas

right [Applause] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] in Pennsylvania's Big Valley also known as the quilas valley or Kish it is home to three distinct Amish groups and three times as many Mennonite groups together they make what the renowned rural sociologist John Hostetler once called the most diverse expressions of anabaptist Mennonite culture anywhere in North America one of these Amish groups in the valley are known as the Nebraska Amish Hostetler called them the most traditional Amish in the New World often called the white Toppers because of the undyed fabric used on their buggies they're the fastest growing of the three Amish groups in the valley the other two groups in the valley are the Renault and Byler Amish they drive black and yellow buggies respectively all Amish groups have certain cultural markers that make them distinct from other Amish groups the youth and non-use of certain types and color of clothing housing decorations buggy type length of hair suspender use Etc may seem Petty and insignificant to Outsiders but to Old order Amish they are tangible group identity symbols both culturally and religiously the Lancaster Amish perhaps the best known of all Amish groups are known for their gray buggy tops dual suspenders and heart-shaped caps worn by the women the Nebraska Amish 2 have distinct cultural indicators different from other Amish groups but even these symbols have changed and evolved within this group as they split due to cultural or religious regions traditionally Nebraska Amish all had unpainted homes Barns and outbuildings they had no overhang on the Gable ends of their houses no screens carpets or curtains were allowed men wore wide brimmed hats Brown trousers white shirts and hair covering their ears women wore dark colors and no bonnets Lawns were left unmowed and these are not even all the distinctions as you view the video I will point out some of the cultural markers and in certain instances the changes that are occurring
