Hey welcome back to speak English with Christina where we have fun becoming fluent in American English and I think my hair is a little messed up from that patch but oh well uh you know what I love about English there are so many fun expressions you know idioms or slang expressions they really make the difference between someone who learned school English and someone who speaks real everyday English and today you'll learn seven slang expressions so you sound more natural let's give [Music] if you want even more everyday expression and lots of real modern English vocabulary that Americans use everyday be sure to get my selection of my ten best lessons to boost your vocabulary in English you can click this link to get access to the lessons immediately and now for the seven slang expressions to pig out pigs are not exactly the cleanest animals and when they eat it's pretty messy I don't know if you've ever seen a pig eat but it's not pretty and that's why Americans use the expression to pig out to pig out when someone eats a lot of food generally not in a very refined manner so if your friends say we paid out at the buffet they didn't eat a lot of pork necessarily they just ate a lot of food like imagine Hongkong pigging out to screw up something if your colleague tells you we really screwed up the project we really screwed up the project they're not talking about a do-it-yourself project with a screw no it means everything with wrong they made a lot of mistakes and the project was a disaster so basically if someone tells you they screwed up it's never a good thing to take a rain check if a friend wants you to do something with them and you're not available at that moment you can say can I take a rain check can I take a rain check it means I can't now but I'd like to at another time and the expression comes from baseball when the weather was bad spectators could get a ticket to come see the game later when the weather was better they got a rain check to do something they liked at a later time to check out the prices in the summer month hotel and Airlines jack up their prices because everyone wants to make a booking during winter vacation ski resorts jack up their prices of course the expression refers to anyone who suddenly increases their prices not just companies in the tourism industry let me check booking.com what the hotel cost $40 in march and $100 in July the fees they really jack up their prices to drive someone up the wall drive wall if you've ever been in a room with ten hyperactive children you might tell your friend these kids drive me up the wall these kids drive me up the wall it means they're making you crazy irritated imagine feeling crazy enough literally to try to drive your car up the wall of a building and that's the emotion that this expression conveys to ride shotgun pow the expression comes from the American Far West when the person sitting next to the driver of the stagecoach needed a shotgun to defend against attackers today we say that the person in the passenger seat in a car is riding shotgun so riding shotgun is less violent than you imagine except maybe if it's two teenagers fighting over who has the privilege to ride shotgun a couch potato this one is funny if you imagine literally a big fat potato sitting on a couch chips now it's not nice to call someone a couch potato a couch potato because it means that they just sit on the couch all day watch TV look at their Facebook and maybe play video games so all of that it's certainly the way to have the physique of a potato because you're sitting on the couch all day you're a couch potato now what about you what other fun American expressions do you know have you ever heard your American friends use one of these expressions come to the blog and share your story with me in the comments and before you leave don't forget to get my top ten English vocabulary lessons here's the link again and these are the lessons that the speak English community chose as their favorites for learning more vocabulary so I'm sure that you'll love them too and of course please share this video and the lessons with a friend who would like them it'll help me help others and that's always cool alright thanks for watching I'm Christina and I'll see you next time [Music] you [Music]
