Thank you for joining us. We begin tonight with new developments in an ambush shooting in Minneapolis that left an officer and another man dead. Several others were wounded in that shootout yesterday afternoon in the Whittier neighborhood, we've been working to gather new information all day. We do have team coverage for you tonight including more on who the officer was. But first, let's start with the latest on the investigation. And Lauren here at the fifth precinct, there's a growing memorial which really stands as a testament to the pain that so many in this community are feeling right now. Step aside and let you take a look at the flowers and wreaths that have been left here. Tonight. We do have a better idea of what led up to the shooting that killed officer Jamal Mitchell and two others including the suspect a shooting. Police leaders call an ambush. Today, investigators continued to search the neighborhood for clues what they know so far. Officer Mitchell responded to a call for a shooting at an apartment building at 22nd in Blais. When he arrived though, we found two people down outside, he began trying to assist one of them. Police chief, Brian O Harri says that man pulled a gun and quote assassinated officer Mitchell continuing to shoot him even after he was down, other officers exchanged gunfire with that suspect killing him. We're told two officers discharged their weapons in all three people died including a person who was in the apartment where the initial call came from, four people were injured. That includes a second Minneapolis police officer who was shot and a bystander who was in a nearby car. A firefighter was also injured. Chief Brian o'hara today calling officer Mitchell a hero. We are a department that is mourning. Officers are hurting and I am angry. It's become too easy to attack our police and it needs to stop. Well, tonight, we do know that the other officer who was shot was treated at the hospital, he will be ok. We're also told that the firefighter was treated and released and will be fine as for the other two people who were injured at this point, all we know is they're still hospitalized. We don't have an update on the injury. One other thing, we still don't know. Authorities have not released the name yet of the suspect who is alleged to have shot Officer Mitchell and who himself was killed. All right, Lauren, thank you, Officer Mitchell had only been with the department for less than two years. The chief calling swearing him in a quote distinct honor and now the community is rallying behind the officer's fiance and Children. Jennifer Hoff has more on how you can help Jennifer Rena. You know, at a moment like this, people wanna step in and help. And specifically, there is a fundraiser tomorrow at the Apostle Supper Club that's partnering with the front line foundation, that's a local nonprofit that gives financial support to families of first responders who have died in the line of duty, which of course now includes Officer Mitchell's family. He was just 36 years old and had three Children described as someone who loved his job. He was a hero from the start. Went on just day three, he and another officer ran into a burning home in the middle of winter and rescued an elderly couple, the woman in just pajamas and the man had Alzheimer's all of this captured, as you can see here on the body, camera video of Officer Mitchell that couple lost everything. And now if you ask anyone who knows Officer Mitchell, they have two, nobody's planning for this. And so to, to just help them out in this unthinkable time where the last thing that they need to worry about is money is, is the least we can do. And since its inception inception rather five years ago, the front line foundation has paid out more than half a million dollars in benefits. We posted a link to its website on carle.com where you can not only donate further but also volunteer, Rena, a great organization. Thank you, Jennifer.
