[Music] hello cave dwellers is pickups and donations on boxing time and just look at this pile we have a bumper episode for you today in which to explore your outrageous generosity and kindness which appears to include the actual ark of the covenant prepare to have your faces melted with nearly an hour i know it's crazy nearly an hour of retro unboxings thank you thank you and thank you again for what is about to happen i truly am the kid who gets to enjoy christmas every single month but the best part is that i get to share it with you and let's do that right now starting with this big old box which has arrived all the way from switzerland this episode is supported by monsterjoysticks.com level up your raspberry pi with our all-in-one arcade kit using genuine sanwar arcade parts and oneclickprint.com for your photos on canvas acrylic gifts and more local craftsmen and global delivery i've been waiting for weeks to open this and what's inside hopefully undamaged are a selection of things that will make for an awesome display for visitors here but would look just as good on your own shelves or maybe as the cherry on top of a refurbishment they were sent to me by dominic who produces them and there's a link in the video description to this and anything else in the video that i referenced today what are they well they are brand new replicas of classic hardware boxes how cool is that so what we've got in here includes the amiga 1200 that's the one on the top here there's the a500 cd 32 commodore 64 vic-20 i think there's a amiga 1000 box even in there an american version apparently i'm looking forward to seeing what that looks like and it's all wrapped up in cling film right now so i think what we have to do is not just show you them flat pack we've got to unpack them unwrap them and let's build them all and see what they look [Music] like [Music] welcome to my computer shop selling all the latest and greatest commodore products see anything you like these really are really lovingly reproduced by dominic he's put a lot of effort into them i can see i think the cd32 is probably my favorite in terms of authenticity and authenticity of the print quality and the box design i mean they're all authentic looking but that one just really stands out for me as being especially nice what they don't include is the poly inserts where they originally existed this vic-20 for example has a double-walled cardboard box instead but of course if you have those polys they will fit perfectly i can't imagine how much it would cost to have custom made polys for 40 year old computer systems so i think that's perfectly understandable and it means that we can all live out our fantasy to own a boxed commodore 64 gs on all of these boxes as soon as you open them there is a flap to make it clear that these are reproductions from the point of view of preservation and historical artifacts of course there's absolutely no alternative to the originals but as long as it's clear what these are on the boxes and when they're displayed well i think it's the next best thing and i bet i guarantee in fact that these will make people smile when they come and visit they're going to look so good wherever i put them and i have to think carefully about that i want them in a place where you can catch sight of them in future videos as well let's pop them out the way so that we've got space for other box openings and a huge thank you to dominic you've got us off to a great start today and let's see what we've got next [Music] a quick ebay item that i bought next and no it's not star wars domino express as much as i'd love to play that it's actually a box of st amiga format magazines for the library some of which i already have and you've seen them on previous unboxings but i just like these ones because they still have that cover disc flap you don't see many like that these days as they normally just got ripped off of the magazine as soon as you bought it and there's even one that has the plastic baggie for the discs so i'm thinking maybe i can get some new bags staple them onto that flap in the original fashion with the cover discs because i do have some of them and it will make a nice little display of magazines that look completely brand new with the discs still on them maybe on a pegboard or something like that just a little nostalgia hit of a thing that was considered so throwaway back in the day so to see them as new really does jangle those nostalgia strings at least it does for me anyway the cost of all four was ten pound to summer bargain to others absolute lunacy such as our hobby on to the next thing the next box to come in is a donation with a handwritten message on it and it reads hi neil zx spectrum plus 3 for the cave bit dusty hasn't been powered on since 1990 but was fully working then keep on doing what you do dave m thank you dave and this donation has prompted mark and i to start putting together a plus three episode the zx spectrum plus three being the 1987 model in the range this is well into amstrad's ownership and production of the zx spectrums and between us we've realized that we've got quite a few of them in various states of disrepair so it'd be really fun to fix them all up at once line them all up see what common faults they have see what's unique to each machine and of course this machine will be included which looks to be in great cosmetic condition just a quick wipe down perhaps a couple of missing rubber feet on the bottom and i think this will look as good as new i'm not sure we can take your guarantee that it still powers up even though it was good 30 years ago in 1990 so we'll do some pre-flight checks make sure that it's safe to do so and fingers crossed here's hoping dave that you'll see this working soon and as part of that episode thank you so much today for sending this in and great job on the packaging too this has arrived well packaged and completely undamaged which is always great to see [Music] how about a game next and our next donation just goes to show that some of you know me so well perhaps too well at times there's no name on the package or note but thank you for sending it in because clearly you know i'm a huge armageddon fan and this is the ultimate pack from 1997 which you can still buy today on steam crazily enough i think it's 10 pounds on steam and that's a really easy way to enjoy it on a modern machine and it promises the original game in this pack the splat pack add-on a mouse mat which is in the box and it's even got some signs of light use which i really like someone's actually played carmageddon with this on their desk next to them exactly as it should be it also promises a key ring and it's uncensored certain regions of course getting zombies or robots instead of pedestrians on release we are missing the key ring and the cd in this box to make it complete so i'm going to be scanning ebay setting up some automatic searches to try and find those but even on the shelf as it is it's a very striking box it will look great next to the original carmageddon box that i've got and it represents a big part of my 90s gaming history so i'm very proud to have this on the shelf thank you to the mystery sender and do drop me a message so that i can thank you in the next video a quick question for you now if you designed a joystick what would you call it super blaster super power stick super excitement or super board i know it's not spelled as in bored like disinterested but come on did nobody say it out loud in the marketing department this is the quick joy 5 superboard the joystick you never knew you always wanted and this box also has no note or name attached to it so i can't thank them but i'm gonna do something about that which we'll talk about in a moment but let's look at the stick first i actually really really like the look of this thing it's like a flight stick but it is digital and micro switched it's not an analog stick and it has a ton of buttons on it which is really for convenience as to how you play it maybe for left or right handed players most micros this is for things like the amstrad the atari machines things like that they don't support as many buttons as are on this stick as standard so it's really a convenience thing and the board in the name refers to a battery-powered unit at the front of the stick here which is most unusual for joysticks so of course i had to grab some batteries to put in it and try it out so let's see what this thing does and it does work and what this is are you ready it's a countdown timer you set the clock to however many minutes you want and then you press start and then it counts down in seconds which i think is the perfect joystick for when you're sharing a machine with your siblings and you have to take turns i mean what could be fairer than a timer you can't argue with that well maybe you can of course it will always end in a fight it always did but i still like the idea anyway this stick is awesome it makes me want to play some 16-bit flight sims it makes me want to start the timer to count down to the next waypoint as i'm navigating between them how could anyone ever get super bored with this it's a great looking stick [Music] so the last two boxes i haven't actually been able to thank the people by name if it was you get in touch and i'll make sure i thank you in the next video it's really it's my fault of course because i've received a huge amount of donation offers recently i think it's to do with the creation of the exhibition space and your willingness to give and donate and and help me to build this which is amazing it feels really bad when i can't thank you and the reason for that is i get offers across a huge range of platforms and a lot of these platforms don't have a search facility on a message level you have to know who sent the message and donations often come two three sometimes even four or five months after the initial offer by which time i've received a lot more messages and i've spent hours uh trying to track down messages to thank people in this episode and i just can't find them it's disorganized on my part so what i've done to address that and make sure i can thank everyone in future as i've set up a dedicated mailbox just for donations anyone contact me on any platform i'll direct them to that and then i know i can search the messages and i can find who sent what that's my fix for the problem i should have done it sooner but i was really taken by surprise by the more recent influx of donation offers so thank you everyone for that and let's get on with the next unboxing our next package comes with a postcard floral greetings from sonam's anson sea only it's not it's from mark in manchester but he grew up in san anton where he says he has a fond memories of arcades on the pier and hopes the included items are useful for this new internet thing intriguing there are a couple of items in the box and the first isn't internet related it's a sega power sausage what this is is a power pack for your game gear to extend the life of the handheld complete with a handy belt clip so you can look really cool with that clipped into your bermuda shorts while you game i'm sure there's lots of other power efficient modern alternatives these days if you want to add battery power to your game gear but for display purposes the peripherals and the add-ons they're all part and parcel of the system so it's nice to have them and mark also kindly included a recap kit for the game gear so i guess i'd better fix one up soon as i've got all the bits for it but the internet reference on the postcard turns out to be something that i lusted after in the 90s the us robotics 56k modem now i used to know this shape of modem as the us robotic sportster but they later merged with 3com in 1997 which is why the 3com name is on there and the sportster name is gone but it maintained the same molding for the case and no doubt lots of the same insides either way it's familiar enough to stoke the embers of memories of wanting this as an upgrade to my aging courier model inside the box is a net magazine and not only one but four isp cds trying to lure you into their services isps including british telecoms line one there's also aol of course there's always aol and the cd is missing from that pack so this was either the chosen one or a coffee coaster more likely the latter compuserve is untouched and intact save for a rip on the front and virgin net also here stop laughing at the back please and then we get onto the modem itself like i said the mould was used a lot not just on the 56k models but also slower models so it's been around for a long time it was a super reliable modem great bit of hardware in home and in server rooms from my experience and it really does deserve its place as an icon in those early world wide web days and uh being boxed well that's a great bonus i think people will really enjoy seeing this so thank you very much mark this next box is something else i'm a man about to meet a hero paulie alex beau sent this in he says he picked it up for 27 pounds many years ago before they got collectible he wrote a popular music video using it called dem jams 3 which includes a monkey island remixed amongst other surprises i'll put a link in the video description to all of this his band is called elmo sex whistle and has a logo that looks like elmo from sesame street in the shape of a whistle i don't want to blow that whistle sorry paulie and he goes on to say as i paid so little for it and barely use it it feels right that this should go to you so that as many people as possible can enjoy it finally can you please give a shout out to arcade dreams team we are working hard to create a multi-part documentary on the history of arcades covering 100 years and here it is it's a roland mt-32 and it's as good looking in real life as it was in the magazines the only place i would ever get to see one in fact it's quite large and larger than i expected it to be it's it's a wonderful looking thing and i'm sure you know what it is but if not it's a music device supported by lots of old ms-dos games and other platforms but famously by sierra and lucasarts games in their point-and-click adventures before sound blaster cards and after but before they became the norm and yes i couldn't resist but give it a clean i'm that excited about owning this i got the cleaning products out straight away and gave it a scrub and yes it took you from pc speaker bleeps and bloops to a high-end synth in just a single step quite an expensive step back in the day but a single step and any games that used it just ooze charm and class as a result it's a great sounding thing there's a couple of scratches on the top paul he says were present when he bought it but who the hell am i to complain about that and it's in otherwise working condition i don't know what their reputation is like for cap leakage but i'll look into that and we can give it a recap if needed as this is from the late 80s so it's got some mileage on it and it's not just for games of course it is a legit music making device in its own right but we've established my music making abilities on this channel so let's not even go there poorly it's gorgeous i love it i can't wait to try it out and set up a pc for visitors to enjoy it too thank you so so much just look at it a roland mt-32 in the cave [Music] amazing [Music] what the hell is going to happen with the next box so much great stuff coming in today this box is not a 27-inch ips monitor as it says but a retro donation from chris nutt thank you chris it was his sister's computer the letter says passed on to him some years ago and there are also some bonus items in there he says that i hope you get to use some baking soda for fluffy muffins soon and yes it's been too long since we did that so we must do that soon what we have here is not only another incredible donation but it complements those reproduction boxes so well because it's a commodore machine in the original box and we didn't get a repro box of this model so it fills that gap beautifully it's the wild the weird and the wicked amiga 600 pack sold here in the uk and i can see quavers crisps mascot curly colin on the front of the box there as he's in one of the bundled games is it pushover i think it's pushover that he's in inside the box we find some loose discs which chris has thrown in including workbench two which is nice and then this this is an ide dom or disk on module i don't know what size it is but it's basically it's a solid state hard disk that you can just drop straight into the id socket nice low profile it doesn't take up much space at all and it gives us a hard disk so no floppy compact flash adapters flapping about inside the amiga 600 it just is nice and neat on the port the original bundled games are inside the box including this this is a really cute version of f1 gp it is the full game just a cutesy box let me fetch the original retail copy to give you a sense of scale there you go little tiny teeny cutesy f1 gp i like that we've also got the manuals in the box and another free mouse mat we don't see so many free mouse mats these days or at least i don't i guess the age of the laser mouse or perhaps tablet use has made them less of a necessity i don't know bring back free mouse mats please i kind of miss them this envelope here contains something i've never owned for any amiga it's a multi-tap and that gives us two more joystick ports on the amiga at least for games that support it i do know that there's a great bomberman clone for the amiga that does support it i've played it exposed it's always popular at expo so that's definitely one to set up for people here to play the machine itself the amiga 600 has a handy dust cover on it and it's pretty minty it's obviously been well looked after there's no yellow in cosmetically it's looking great we don't know if it's working but let's at least check that there's no battery backed up clock in the trapdoor leaking all over the board [Music] there is something in here and there's no battery on it thankfully this is a lovely addition this is a marpit mop602a that's a one meg chip ram expansion period authentic this is not a modern expansion so if we throw in the dom for our hard disk we've got that extra chip ram it's a tidy little amiga very nice indeed let's put that back inside and as the cleaning kit was out for the md32 i thought let's clean up the mouse ball gunk off of the mouse back you know that weird black mouse booger stuff that would build up yeah that let's clean that off there we go all clean thank you chris for this wonderful donation of your sister's machine i hope she knows about it and thank you cave dwellers for tolerating the generosity that's landing in the cave this month if you want to throw something at the screen by now i wouldn't blame you but rest assured this isn't all just for me it's for everyone who visits the exhibition to enjoy my job is to maintain it and make sure that people can access it here or through the videos that i make with it now on to the next box [Music] i just mentioned this one briefly i bulk bought a load of playstation 2 games this month because you can get them for 50 pence to a pound each at the moment even less in bulk they seem so out of favor that i've been collecting them for a couple of years now very cheaply in charity shops as i see them and i couldn't resist this job lot however the danger of buying in bulk is sports games like fifa and tiger woods so this wasn't quite as big a bargain as i was hoping for but still a good selection for the collection common sports games on the bottom row games i want to play in the top so i'll pass the unwanted games onto a charity shop i paid 40 pounds for the lot there's certainly 40 pounds of entertainment in there regardless and i'm sure the ps2 nostalgia will creep up soon and i'll be thankful i got these while i could afford them [Music] and another purchase i made this month was this sinclair microvision 2-inch portable tv from 1978 it comes with a natty little carry case for the retro fan about town and if we slide it out is that not the coolest tv you've ever seen i mean you'll go blind trying to watch it but boy did clive sinclair want to deliver us a portable tv in 1978 crt of course such was the technology of the time which will account for some of its quite substantial length given the size of the screen itself and a retractable aerial to find a signal i'm happy with the condition of this given that it's over 40 years old and the little stand underneath is even intact i was really scared unfurling this that the plastics might be brittle and it might break but it's all in good condition it might even be the first time this stand has ever done its job what prompted me to get this was an old donation from a couple of years back now which is a newer model from sinclair this one projecting its electrons from the side and then a mirror is used to reduce the overall size of it i know it's not computers it's not my normal thing but the sinclair connection made me want to collect them and they will look great as part of a sinclair display we'll test them out soon i hope there's even a little battery holder for four spare a batteries but i bet they don't last very long at all [Music] back to your donations now and this next one has really intrigued me if obscure consoles are your thing then take a look at this it's from 1984 and was released in japan with a limited european release specifically in france and it's an 8-bit console competing with the nintendo nes and others of that generation the system includes eight games and two joysticks which are wired into the case no joystick ports here so hopefully they work or they'll need to be repaired in situ as well as a fleshy keypad and a quick look at the games for this thing on youtube really quite surprised me it does seem to hold its own and we've got some nice games included miner 2049 i recognize that's a classic on other systems so i hope it's good on this one too although this game milky princess i'm not sure i even want to know about that one it looks like the joysticks pack away into the case and it appears that there is a lid that should go on top of that so we're missing that and i'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a replacement and expect to see this on the channel soon it was sent in by my friend johnny from youtube channel reinfused who sent me some goodies from his channel as well so thank you very much johnny and he has played this console on his channel as well as lots of other really rare systems which he imports over from japan so it's worth checking him out thanks johnny for the console for the games and for milky princess [Music] i told you today was going to be a crazy episode and we're nowhere near the end so do recharge your teapots hit pause come back ready to carry on if you need to because we've got yet more unusual hardware in this next box which has come all the way from the us and was sent in by tom newton so thank you so much tom and this box is jam-packed with goodies potential episodes and exotic hardware well exotic for me anyway first out is an envelope of cartridges now these look like colecovision games and tom has used cleaning cloths as packing material is tom trying to tell me something i wonder does he want me to clean what's inside we did get the calico vision in europe but it wasn't really that popular arrived to us in 1983 a year after the us and it was competing with the likes of the atari 2600 now if we dig deep into this box we do find nestled inside an atari 2600 and as soon as i picked this up i thought this has to be what they call a heavy sixer version of the console it weighs a ton compared to my others and it's got that big thick plastic front and at the back which was thinned down on laser models with distinctive lines really distinctive lines on the front i think that's what i'm dealing with here if i've misidentified this then do let me know but i'm pretty sure and it makes it perhaps the most iconic model of an iconic console perhaps the most iconic console of all time so it's fantastic to have it in the collection so we have in here an atari we have coleco vision games so that must mean the next layer is indeed a colecovision console [Music] it's a little bit grubby we know how to fix that it's a little bit bashed up something is rattling and that seems to be coming from the joystick but we can probably fix that up too [Applause] and also we can find a joystick for player 2 i hope but it's all looking good the stickers look good there are no bits of plastic broken off or missing just a little bit grubby and we can certainly sort all of that out and tom requests in his email that he'd like to see rgb modded instead of using the rf signal so i'll certainly look into that tom it'd be nice to get that up and working so that's the colecovision console but there is one more thing in this box which brings all of this together check this out this is an expansion unit that goes into the front of the calico vision making it pretty huge you're going to need your dining table to fit this lot on and it allows you to play atari 2600 cards surely there's some history to this atari must have tried to get the lawyers involved to block this kind of thing i'd be very surprised if they didn't it's definitely a system that needs our attention and definitely a system with stories that need to be investigated but i love how you can put both of the system cartridges in at the same time click here vision at the back atari 2600 at the front i wonder which one takes precedence if you fire it up with them both him and we'll have no problem cleaning any of this up because cloths thank you tom i'm absolutely over the moon with this really appreciate you sending it over and uh well we're not going to run out of channel content any time soon with this and everything else we've seen so far thank you tom [Music] this next box comes courtesy of paul joe leaf and it's officially the start of an atari st games collection something that's in quite short supply at the cave and paul's fixed us up with some absolute classics including f1 gp it's third appearance today there's also epic heimdall and a copy of lemmings which you think would be the most common game in the world to be found on 16-bit platforms but not so this one if we take a look inside the floppy disk in here is labeled book club which means that this was a special edition from mail order service the home computer club you had to be a member to get this which has some exclusive level changes so it turns out this is not that common after all and probably quite collectible for lemmings fans life and death a game i found completely unplayable without a manual so perhaps i can make up for past slaughters that i committed with a scalpel and lots more it's just classic game after classic game coming out of this box and then this title came out it's called the crystal and if you're in the us this was published under cinema where so you would get different artwork but it's the same game and by sheer coincidence some time back i was sent this in an envelope it's the missing poster from the game box so we can actually reunite them and have a complete game once again something very satisfying about being able to do that [Applause] dragon's breath never played it but it always intrigued me it's also known as dragon lord and it's a fantasy strategy game and like others it's a reminder of the transition from 8 to 16 bit with boxes like this catering to both cassette tapes and also discs i won't read through all the titles but you can see it's a lovely atari sd spread on the table here thank you paul all we need now is an atari st set up and working we've got so many amigas here it'd be criminal not to give the ataris their own space to show off in the exhibition even things out a little bit and these games will certainly help with that a quick thank you to retro rewind this unexpected goody box turned up they sent this over includes a t-shirt and some snacks from the us which made me realize i haven't actually had bubble gum since i was at school been a long time do adults even buy bubble gum so of course i had to give it a go but as you can hear there is a storm outside and my bubble was burst [Music] i gave it my best shot thanks to frank at retro retrorewind.ca for sending that over kai robinson sent the next item over and this is a great potential project designed and produced by kai himself this is the macintosh se reloaded board a brand new recreation of the mac s e boards which are so often battery damaged and this is a tried and tested one we've got a revision 1.5 of his board here so all the bugs have been squashed and will only have my soldering skills to blame if it doesn't work there's even a little message here on the board for us hello kai and also in the box is an apple emate 300 from 1997 in a semi-transparent colorful casing that we'd see continue into the g3 imac which came out the following year it's a personal digital assistant rather than a full fat laptop and it runs the newton operating system and has little stylus to prod the screen with and that's even got its little holder on the side in a pre ultrabook era i imagine the battery life gained by going down the pda route with this combined with a usable keyboard made it quite a productive tool at least for some tasks anyway word processing maybe some spreadsheets of course managing your diary and all of the usual pda things granted it does look a little bit like a child's toy maybe something produced by vtech or one of those similar companies but being apple i'm sure it didn't come with the price tag of one i also found some chips and an oscillator in the box with some really useful items to get us started on building the board and some memory module pcbs too so now i'm on the lookout for a suitably damaged macintosh se that we can resurrect with this something that's beyond repair completely battery damaged of course we want the crt element of it still working so that we can just swap the board out build the new board and hopefully have a working macintosh se as a result thank you kai i am once again indebted to you and lou and owe you another curry next time you come and visit [Music] this box here comes from cave dweller john mccluskey and it's a real piece of british micro history before you fast forward yes i know we unboxed a zx81 in the last unboxing video so you're probably asking why another well this one is a bit special before we crack that box open there's an extra box included and you can see that this contains a 16k memory pack the memo pack is clad in brushed metal and if you remember you may have seen the memo tech mtx512 computer appear on the channel quite a rare british machine and that's made by the same company a machine with a really beautiful brushed aluminium finish so you can see that style right here in this memory pack and this is brand spanking new right down to the included 16k sticker in the box the machine having only 1k as standard and original sticky velcro pads these help to secure the pack to the machine and minimize the system crashing if the ram pack wobbled so it's amazing to have all of these things together as new in the box but if you thought that was cool look inside the zx81 box here this system was available in two forms in 1981 pre-built or as a kit and what we have inside here is a brand new never built kit exactly as it was on the shelf nearly 40 years ago this thing is pristine the casing the keyboard the system board and that's not just any zx81 system board take a closer look at it this is an issue one zx81 board the very first to come out of the factory although strangely no matter how hard i look i can't find a hello cave dweller message on this board very strange everything we need to build it is here in this box so the question is what's the etiquette here does it fulfill its destiny and get built into a working machine or should it remain in kit form perhaps as part of a display i'd like to hear your opinion on that in the comments section it's a bit of a dilemma i'm not sure what to do let me know a couple of the cables in here are reacting with the polystyrene box as you can see here so i'm going to leave those out of the box for now to avoid further deterioration but i won't let them stray far this all has to stay complete as new and together so john thank you so much for considering me for such a historic piece in the first place and thank you for sending it to me it will be taken good care of here i can assure you [Music] from one end of the sinclair spectrum to the other now because this parcel from dave is also an issue one it's a boxed zx spectrum next from the first round of the kickstarter campaign that launched it this is an fpga-based modern-day sinclair zx spectrum that builds on the specs of the original to give it more features while staying true to the original ethos of the machine it's exactly as the name implies really it's the next zx spectrum should the range have officially continued or how they imagine it could have been and i did back this myself but i backed the second round of crowdfunding which means i'll receive a later model when they're produced put this on a table with the mr with the vampire with the omni the c64 the pie storm and we've got a hell of a display of hands-on modern retro solutions i think it'll be popular and i know this in particular will be very popular among spectrum fans the manual in this is great too it's ring bound just like the originals and full of coding info to get you started huge thanks then to dave for this and for being an official cave dweller over on patreon you are a wonderful person sir thank you very much for sending this in we're into the quick fire round now as we edge towards seeing what's inside that huge travel trunk games gratefully received included a320 airbus for the flight sim collection complete with maps posters manuals ils charts everything you need to qualify to be a real pilot games in dual cases that i need to pair up with boxes arrived including unreal hexane 2 and quake hello old friend it's been a while since i last saw you and thank you to simon for sending those in and thanks to darren aka king monkey on social media for this an essential item for any retro gamer a brand new floppy disk box so new i didn't really want to open it but let's at least put some floppies in there you go your life's ambition has been achieved that's the floppy boxes life ambition not mine not mine by the way now let's put you back in the box and thank you very much to darren and some amiga games also arrived thanks to kelvin as well as some 3d printed coasters and i did smile as soon as i opened this and saw the turtles game hero turtles of course none of that aggressive ninja turtles business i bought this back in the day and i think it cost me two pound fifty from the store dixons who appeared to have so many copies in my town they just wanted to get rid of them at any price we've also got cannon fodder 2 which i didn't play such was my addiction to the first game that i didn't dare get myself hooked on the second one when i had exams to study for so that needs to be played lemmings of course lemmings are not a book club special this time and some games that needed the later aga chipset amigas so there's alien breed 3d taking the series into first person shooter territory and star trek 25th anniversary which is an adventure game i wasn't aware got an amiga release i clearly wasn't paying attention but it comes on a whopping number of discs and is hard drive installable and promises 256 bold colors like its vga counterpart offered [Music] this parcel arrived from my friend youtuber and doppelganger dan from retro recollections and it's a sega mega drive or is it it is is it yeah it is but here's what i had to check because this is a sega mega drive to me the version we got here in the uk what dan has sent is a japanese model and it's funny how something that's 100 authentic can give you those cheap knock-off vibes just because you're not familiar with it the 16-bit text for example seems too big to me the blue reset button that's not right but of course it all absolutely is and the more i look at it the more i actually like the bolder colors and the design of it compared to our quite bland in comparison version here in the uk it appears the rf modulator inside has been ripped out and that's been included in the box so this one might have some secrets to reveal when we open it up and take a look and i'll have to get some japanese exclusive games to pair up with it for people to play thank you very much dan for sending this in a link to his channel will be included with all the other links in the video description it's well worth a visit especially if you want to see a better looking version of me these next two items arrived on the same day from two different senders thomas and stanislaus thomas in sunnyvale california and stanislaus in malta and they complement each other perfectly one is a four megabyte ram upgrade and the other is a midi card both for the sharp x68000 and you really seem to love that machine it appeared on the channel recently when i set it up with a hard drive and figured out how to use it how it all worked and now with these added i can play games that demand more ram games like final fight and also enjoy games that support external sound devices and quite a lot of them do devices like the mt-32 that we saw earlier and the sc series of midi devices from the era it's truly going to be the coolest x68000 machine in well in the county of gloucestershire at least i'll stick my neck out that far the midi card is called the midiori if you're in the market for one and the ram is the gauss panic eight meg ram board seems to be named after the taito game of the same name and while mine has four meg or at least i think it does looking at it it has the capacity for eight meg in total stanislaus thomas thank you very much for these upgrades that sharp is going to sing and expect to see it all being upgraded soon on the channel and so to the huge box we saw at the start of the episode i expect you want to know what's inside but i'm afraid we've run out of time i'm just kidding i'm just kidding of course we're going to open it this comes from jen and it contains a machine and accessories dating back to 1981 and this machine means business we're not playing games with this thing this is serious computing for serious people like me let's get it all out on the table so that we can see what it is properly [Music] if you haven't guessed already it is indeed a sharp mz80b a z80 based machine clocking in at four megahertz with an integrated green crt screen and an intelligent cassette deck so you can't actually open or operate that deck with the buttons it's all software controlled and there's more than is on the table there's lots of cables discs tapes everything you need to operate this thing is in the trunk and it also comes with a dot matrix printer and dual floppy drives jeff says that this was used in part for pascal programming and some of the discs confirm that we've got multiple copies of pascal and also the cpm operating system the system boots from floppy there's no hard drive that would have been both huge and very expensive in 81 but it includes the master boot floppy required to operate it and the label advises strongly to boot the system from a backup and not to use the original master disk the condition of the disk would suggest that that advice was very well heeded it's a fabulous looking system that would sit wonderfully next to a commodore pet and other business machines of that era but you know i'm sure if we looked hard enough we might find a text adventure to play on it thank you so much to jeff for this it's well it's a treasure it's a museum piece and i'm really glad that it's found its home here and i'm looking forward to exploring it hopefully in a future episode so what can i say about today's episode the outpouring of generosity has been incredible i was totally unprepared for it and this surge of donations lately seems to be as a result of the exhibition space that i'm building lots of you mention it when you contact me and i think you're seeing it as a home that you'd like to see your old systems retire to and the fact that other people will get to see it rather than it just living in your loft or your garage seems to be very attractive that's the message i'm getting from you all and i am of course very happy to provide that service and to be the custodian of these tech artifacts for future generations thank you everyone for your kindness believe it or not this isn't absolutely everything that was sent in there are still some other things that will perhaps roll over into next month or i've got earmarked for dedicated episodes and i don't want to spoil the surprise for you so don't think i don't appreciate it if you've sent it in and it's not been shown as always thank you for watching and until next time take care bye [Music] you
