million total speakers which makes this language the fifth most spoken language in the whole world just after Spanish it's also the official language of 22 countries make up the Arab League and it's one of the six official languages of the United Nations now the Arabic language is part of the family of Semitic languages that include Hebrew Aramaic the Arabic word for I or me Anna and Arabic is Anna in Aramaic so you see they're all connected now the Arabic language is usually divided into two or three categories so we have the modern Standard Arabic which is the one you hear in the news if you have the classical Arabic of ancient text in the Quran although Arabs usually consider the modern and the classical one to be the same and then you have the dialects based on different regions like the Lebanese Arabic which is the one that I grew up with the Egyptian dialect also the Palestinian dialect and so on for example if you want to tell somebody to wait and Standard Arabic you'll say another and Lebanese it's in TOR see the difference an Egyptian it's a stunner all right now for Arabs around the world the country with the most people of Arab ancestry is Brazil hola Brazil with an estimated 12 to 13 million people of Arab ancestry this is more than the whole population of Lebanon itself he is suing cleveo followed by France Indonesia and Turkey with around 4 to 5 billion Argentina with around 4 and the US with 3.7 million alright now let's go back in time a bit all the way back to the Islamic Golden Age that's right that's a very significant period for Arab and Islamic history because that was a period of great economic cultural and scientific flourishing that dated between roughly the 8th to the 14th century because of a high importance that was placed on education so much so that the House of Wisdom was built in 825 in Iraq and Babette which seems to have been something of a great academic center and library and during that time scholars gathered knowledge from all around the world and translated it into Arabic a lot of them scientific and philosophical texts from Greek a lot of those scholars by the way were Christian scholars like her 9 even a shaggy body which really shows you that was a period of great embrace of different cultures and religions and knowledge from all around the world during that time things like math astronomy and medicine flourished for example mathematician Muhammad Amin Musa Howard is me although he was persian played a huge role in the development of algebra he wrote an entire book in arabic about algebra more than a thousand years ago algebra which is a Shibboleth another important figures hasn't been in Haydn it was an Arab mathematician astronomer and physicist at the Zama golden age he's known as the father of modern optics because he made significant contributions to the world of optics especially with the book he wrote Keith Urban monolith the book of optics which was based on experimentation and the scientific method before it was a thing later in Europe his book in fact became a standard texts on optics in Europe all the way to the Renaissance fantastic contribution from the Arab world many of them by the way of polymaths like astronomer medical doctor physicist poet that's like a bodybuilder dr. poet yoga master who speaks five languages today Arabs come in different shapes and backgrounds dark skin light skin Muslim Christian Druze fact languages like Spanish and Swahili are connected to the Arab language because of historical air presence in those regions take our Umbra and Andalusia for example in Spain which come from Alhambra and an endless Swahili from Arabic so ahem you guys know the word Rafiki in Swahili graffiti from The Lion King which means friend it comes from arabic there are 50 my companion or my friend so you guys can see how rich the Arab world is and how unfortunately the media continues to portray a lot of Arabic things in a negative or shallow way I read an interview with Egyptian actor minimus old it was talking about how difficult it was for Arab actors to get respectable roles movies he was saying one of his first roles was Al Qaeda number 2 I totally understand me but I'm optimistic I feel it's changing and it's gonna continue to change we have to make it change it's all about focus and education I was blessed myself recently with a wonderful role in a film that shows Arabs in a positive way I'm not gonna say too much though just to build some hype but it's currently in post-production I'll keep you guys updated now when it comes to education and portrayal I'm just gonna reiterate that we need to stop this whole terrorists evil scary image of Arabs or that exotic boy your kind of fetishized look at the Arab world which is really shallow very outsider normalizing Arabic culture and identity showing Arabs as normal members of society the more you do that the more you overcome the fear of the unknown because that's really what it's about when you don't know you're scared that's why I do what I do I believe to educate you have to do it in a kind way so there you go my friends I threw at you some amazing Arab facts I know there's a lot more but I chose to focus on a few from history and from today now you tell me whatever facts do you know and if you're Arab tell me where you're from and what you love about the Arab world if you're not Arab tell us what you like about the Arab world what interests you you know Arabs are very hospitable so if you're interested in the culture you can expect
