[Applause] [Music] hi guys today we're going to talk about Hoyas or in english wax vines or common wax flowers in swedish we actually call them for porcelain flowers and all the names actually relate to the flower that the Hoya has it looks kind of waxy like or ceramic like the flower I'm going to give you some tips about it and as usual we're going to separate this into four parts we have the purchase we have the planting the placement and then we have the plant care so if you are only interested in one of these you can just skip forward the first thing you're going to do is go out and buy your Hoya now I'm surrounded by Hoyas that are called Hoya Australis which actually means that they are originated from the north of Australia and in our experience is one of the easiest toilets to maintain now every tip I'm going to give you today can be applied to any type of Hoya so it doesn't have to be the Royals tallest however we recommend this plant because it's very simple now it's not an expensive plant and the plant like this could go for around between five euros to ten euros in a flower shop which actually is nothing if you compare to how long you're going to live with it I've seen Horrors that have lived for over 30 years in window sills at home at people's homes so it doesn't cost very much the first thing you're going to do is that you're going to take a look at the leaves of the plant when you're at the flower shop now this plant has actually been standing here in our facilities for a few months and it doesn't like it so you can see here if I show you how the leaves look next to the leaves that are good now this plant has lost its glow the plants are very dry and if you feel on this one that is as it should be it's quite hard and lush so if it looks like this in the flower shop please pick another one you should also take a look at the bottom of the plant can be some flour some leaves that are dying at the bottom of it and that simply because usually they're standing quite close together so the bottom of the hoya is not getting any lights which means that it's going to lose some of the leaves down here but that's not an issue if it's not all the leaves so you can just take them off and it's nowhere worries it can also look like this which means it has been growing in the flower shop which of course is not a problem I'm going to show you later on how to cut this and what to do with it but don't be scared if it has been growing like this it just means that the plant is feeling well another thing you have to think about when you're making the purchase is that I always take off the pot of the plant to see what the roots look like and the roots should look like this it should be quite a lot of roots preferably a real net of roots and they should be white and lush so if they're not if they're not a lot of roots or if the the soil falls apart when you start to take off the pot maybe you should consider picking another plant when you're going to take the Hoyer home you should know that it's not a sensitive plant usually you don't have to cover it in plastic or in paper but if it is a very cold evening maybe if five degrees Celsius or perhaps even - which means below zero degrees Celsius you should cover it up in some way otherwise you don't have to bother because the the little time it takes you to take it home is not a problem now when you get home it's time to plant it in something and the hoya actually likes to stand in a pot that is very small it likes to have a small pot so you don't have to repot it or put it in a bigger pot when you get home so just leave it in the plastic it came with and you can actually have it like this for several years before you have to replant it and it only it likes it so the soil should be very light and airy it shouldn't be a heavy maybe clay-like soil it should be very light which means that the roots of the hoya really wants to have a lot of air that you have to consider that when you eventually repot it also put it in a quite heavy pot because it's going to grow and it's going to grow quite fiercely and when it grows and gets bigger it's going to get quite heavy so put it in a heavy pot so that it doesn't tip over when it gets heavier usually the hoya comes in a different variety of shapes and forms it is a climbing plant which means that it usually climbs some Sun some kind of net or some kind of wire and that wire can be shaped like a heart or a pyramid or spiral shape or there are many many different kinds but it is a climbing climbing plant which means that it's going to get long climbing stems like this and you after a while you have to either use this climb and just take it around the wire like this or you can cut it and we recommend you to cut it quite often since it's going to be be growing quite a lot so if you don't cut it very often it's going to get big very fast how do you cut it well you take the the stem like this you take a sharp short scissors and then you cut it where you want to cut it you can cut it in between the leaves leave pairs and you should cut it approximately one centimeter over a leaf pair now I don't want this because it ruins the shape of the plant in this case so I'm going to cut it right here like that now what you're going to see is that the plant actually bleeds and this milky substance is a little bit toxic and so if you know that you have any type of allergies or are sensitive to other types of plants you should be aware of this and maybe use gloves when you do this but for most people of us that's not a problem not unless you're starting to eat the plants the hoya is also quite perfect to put in a self watering pot I have one here that's actually my own from my home and this hoya has been standing in this self watering pot for approximately 10 years so I have never reported this for over 10 years and it's actually planted in pumice that's a volcanic rock that we're going to make a video of later but this also shows that it can stand for quite some time and this grows quite fiercely so I have to cut it maybe 10 times a year because it's getting too big and when it gets too big the wire is not going to stand up anymore it's going to collapse so you have to cut it and cut it and cut it to make sure that it doesn't collapse now when you have chosen a pot for your hoya which is quite simple as I told you you have to place it somewhere and this is easy because the Hoyer can actually be placed anywhere in your house that being said you should place it close to a light source like a window because it needs light it doesn't need a lot of light but it needs light at least if you want it to grow a flower and it will flower one to one till two times a year and you should know that the flower is going to have a bit of a scent that can be quite strong and it's going to be strong in the morning and it's going to be strong in the evening so during the day you might not even feel it but in the morning in the evening you're going to feel the scent of the flower if you don't like that scent and if you only bought the hoya for the shape or for the color of the leaves or because you like it then you can cut off the flowers that's not going to harm the plot so if you don't like the scent take off the flowers don't let it flower when you place it the only thing you should really think about is not to place it straightly in the southern window because if it gets too much Sun the leaves are going to get a little bit yellow and it's going to lose the glow and waxy surface of the leaves like we have here it's going to look quite like this so place it in a northern window or southern as eastern or western or even a bit into the room but don't place it in a southern window because it will probably get burnt now we've bought the plant we have chosen a pot for it we have placed it somewhere where we like it to be and it's time to start taking care of it and that may be the easiest way the easiest things with a hoya because it doesn't need much much care it doesn't want too much water so it likes to dry out in between watering and the simplest way to figure out when it's dry is just to take your finger and place it on the soil if you can feel that it's dry on top of the soil it's probably time to give it a little bit of water and I think you might be able to do this once a week it could even be once every 2 2 weeks depending on if you have put it somewhere inside the room where it's not as bright not as light it doesn't need much nutrients you should give it nutrients when you see that there is a flower on the way or when it has a lot of flowers then you can give nutrients maybe once a month and just follow the simple instructions on the nutrients you can buy in any store a little tip for you when watering the plant or cutting is is that like I said before when you cut it it's going to bleed and to minimize that bleeding there is a simple trick if because what actually happens when you cut it is that there is a type of built built up of pressure inside of the plant especially when the soil is dry you have a pressure inside so when you cut the plant it's going to bleed quite a lot because the pressure is released and it's going to say per out where you have cut it but if you water the plant and let their roots start drinking the water the pressure inside of the plant is going to be smaller so if you wait perhaps an hour after watering and then make the cut it's not going to bleed as much and this usually applies to all plants that bleed if you water it first it's not going to bleed as much now I should mention that the Hoyas could get some pests on it it's usually not a problem here in Sweden we usually get something I think it's called mealy bugs in English it's called illness in Swedish they're actually one centimeter big white furry pests and you can just take them out and throw them away they're not dangerous for you but if he keeps coming back you can go to the local hardware store and buy some pesticide and just follow the instructions on the can now after you've done this they it can get a little bit sticky on the surface of the plant now this is not something that is going to injure the plant and you can just easily take a microfiber cloth that you use for cleaning and wipe it away and then the plant is as good as new okay I've hoped you enjoyed this video please subscribe to our Channel and if you have any questions or maybe if you want us to make a video of a specific plant let us know and take care of your Hoyas Hado
