All the Browns starting QBs since coming back

[Music] so in 1995 the cleveland browns played their final game in cleveland well for now but whatever they moved from cleveland to baltimore and left their name logos uniforms and team history back in cleveland and the new team was called the ravens and they got to keep the entire roster and two hall of famers in the draft because why not anyways eventually the browns came back as an expansion team and with the first pick in the 1999 draft they picked the first quarterback in team history well that was a mistake tim couch over donovan mcnabb and gearing james and ricky williams and tory holt and champ bailey david boston chris mcallister dante culpepper oh and they passed on kurt warner in the expansion draft i think you get the point but uh couch didn't start week one [Music] yep coy detmer's older brother started the first game in brown's history but no one cares he was dumped for couch by the fourth quarter [Music] and now here's the beginning of the tim couch eric intercepted scott shields the look he picks it off what a debut okay tim wasn't the best he threw three straight incompletions after that and then he lost a fumble and you know what tim i am jealous of your efficiencies that is an impressive turnover ratio cleveland lost their first six tim couch starts and then boom a hail mary because why not then phil dawson kicked a game-winning field goal to beat the steelers in week [Applause] 10. side note about phil dawson he played in the league for so long that not only did he kick that game-winning field goal in 1999 but i got to witness him live in person in 2017 at a cardinals texans game back in 1999 the browns didn't win a single game after that dawson game winner okay couch cushions how about 2 000 well in the 2000 draft the browns passed on a good solid backup quarterback named mark bulger and tom brady but whatever it's still a couch show for now well they started out 2-1 not bad dare i say couch was good there it is well now tim is hurt his td int ratio was five to one in the last four games it was two and eight not good [Music] yes the future now former eagles head coach doug peterson was a quarterback in the nfl for a while he was fine whatever brownsville 1-7 with peterson as a starter but for reasons i cannot explain he was benched for [Music] yes the guy drafted just a few spots before thomas brady was going to start a game in the nfl it was against the jags and okay 45 to nothing neat oh oh and the ravens won the super bowl that year so yeah just a real slap in the face to cleveland [Music] now it's 2001 and hey would you look at that lazy boy recliners started all 16 games and hey they started 4-2 not bad cleveland then coming out of the bye week they lost two straight overtime games and okay they finished seven to nine not bad for an expansion team in year three of course other expansion teams have been making championship games by this point but couch pass for 3000 yards so you know it's something [Music] so in weeks one and two kelly holcomb was the starting quarterback he balled out throwing five touchdowns and no picks then mysteriously [Music] couch took over and went 8-5 boom another hail mary because why not but in week 17 eating a win to make the playoffs couch was hurt so back to [Music] so holcomb came in and threw a touchdown pass in the fourth to give the browns a one point lead opens pass is caught touchdown browns kevin johnson and we are tied then william green gave the browns an eight point lead william green across midfield it's a foot race green takes it all the way 64 yards no flags however the falcons push down to the goal line and remember this team's backfield consists of warwick dunn who was a legend in college and the national champion at florida state and oh yeah some guy named mike vick you know the second greatest running quarterback of all time first down we welcome those of you who have just joined us first and goal for the falcons from the grounds four and warwick dunn to the goal line no signal yet stopped just short second down the browns are concerned the dolphins lead over new england has been cut to three vic front corner of the end zone looking for crumpler third down they made three of those four on third and goal dunn is stopped and finally fourth down they may get to play another no signal stop short the dog pound erupts yes the browns finished nine and seven which meant they were headed into the playoffs for the first time since coming back they played the steelers and actually on the third play of the game holcomb dimed up kevin johnson for 83 yards which led to his score open steps up from the shotgun down the sideline has a man open and hit it inside the 30 kevin johnson to the 10 to five and dragged down just short of the goal line the browns and this may shock you took a 24 to nothing lead against the steelers wait a minute there we go sorry 24 to 7 my bad yeah they blew it to an xfl mvp one of one baby c related greg maddox no okay hopefully the browns can bounce back from this soon in 2003 holcomb was the opening day starter but he got worse throwing 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as opposed to last season's eight and four [Music] couch started a few games wasn't good just like that boom they cut him [Music] boom franchise qb four years 25 million plus if things go south the browns can void the last two years of his contract and he's a disappointment [Music] so holcomb started two games wasn't great wasn't terrible but he also had to share time with luke mccown was drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 nfl draft they passed on well it didn't pass on anyone notable i don't know maybe craig krinzel is he notable his four starts weren't great they were just whatever [Music] oh and by the way the browns cut garcia and remember only the last two years of his contract were avoidable so they ditched him a full year early yeah it's trendover it could have been better [Music] here comes another rookie qb this time one with an objectively funny last name and they picked him over derrick anderson and matt castle and fitz magic oh and they picked brandon edwards in the first round over aaron rodgers so that's the third hall of famer they've passed on fry did stuff four to five td interception ratio nearly 60 completion percentage 2006 fry was uh i don't know 10 16 touchdown interception ratio he was bad what do you people want me to say [Music] so derek anderson the browns passed on him in the 2005 draft and yet magically here he is on the browns roster in 2006 he didn't really do much but we'll come back to him later [Music] in the 2007 draft the browns picked brady quinn 22nd overall six of the next seven players were pro bowlers oh and two of the three previous players were pro bowlers so you can see how they clearly whiffed there so quinn wasn't the starter [Music] nope he's trash yeah so derek anderson kind of threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns in a week two game versus the bengals the final score of that game was 51-45 why why not anderson threw for 3787 yards on the whole year as well as 29 touchdowns he made the pro bowl i repeat a brown's quarterback made the pro bowl he led them to a 10 and six record and they missed the postseason why i'm going to say this a lot why not so now it's 2008 and derek anderson's magical ride to a pro bowl was over because now he's bat so now it's [Music] brady quinn time he's doing pretty fine and he's hurt well i guess it's [Music] yeah whatever he went oh and two in his last two starts and then got hurt so now it's ken dorsey is not related to jack dorsey he founded twitter by the way what were you talking about browns that's right the browns okay so thing happened dorsey was good no no he wasn't he threw six interceptions and three starts and now watch as i show you every touchdown pass you ever threw for the browns and that's it [Music] holy toledo it's bruce kratkowski get it okay so bruce undergrad threw three picks and two starts and here's every touchdown pass he ever threw for cleveland and that's it [Music] brady quinn is back to being the starter and he was benched at halftime of week three anderson is back in two nine td interception ratio in five games so that means [Music] hey a positive touchdown interception ratio seven to four baby all right what else two and four is a starter and he's hurt again are you kidding me [Music] anderson is back i don't care go away derek it's colt mccoy time baby the browns drafted him in the third round ahead of okay i will pay you if you can name any of these players and they should have traded for his roommate but they didn't so mccoy was actually not the week one starter [Music] it's jake dallom come on brown just sign one guy anyway he started week one and did well he messed up before the half he's orchestrated a lot of two-minute drills ball's got to come out right intercepted ronnie barber inside the 30 barber finally forced down just short of the goal line 66-yard return and that has breathed new life into the box stallone was clearly frustrated on the sidelines and things didn't get much better when he threw an interception late lofty pass intercepted and it's ej bakers with the pick and then a completion to end the game defending the boundary defending the boundary down here has time gotta throw it throws sideline at a point at the 40. it's lucky on the reception and they will not get out of bounds and it's over really nice job by tampa there at the end they moved those corners way out to protect the boundary 14 straight points for tampa after they trailed by 11. seneca wallace who once performed the run in college at iowa state i'm second and ten wallace looking for the second option still looking still looking back to the 30s scrambling tight quotes down inside the tent look out looking for a block gets it wallace touchdown yeah you take in that footage that grainy low quality footage that video was uploaded in 2006 by the way back to the browns seneca wallace i keep saying his name so i don't forget it seneca wallace was man in his first four starts four touchdowns two interceptions one win three losses injury [Music] dulham came in and wasn't that great he had a pass that was batted for a pick six which is always not good but then he got hurt so now we're back to and we're now back to cole mccoy in his second start he this is real defeated drew brees in new orleans in a fun fact that i only just discovered this was the third consecutive season in which the browns defeated the defending super bowl champions so you know i don't even have anything to how did they even do that then the next week against tom brady mccoy got the w again yeah that's right colt mccoy defeated tom brady and drew brees in back-to-back weeks in his two of his first three starts that patriots team went 14-2 then the browns dropped two straight games and so in week 12 versus the panthers dilom is back in his three starts he wasn't great but the browns beat his former team the panthers and then also the dolphins but they lost to the bills [Music] well for some reason the two quarterbacks mccoy defeated as a starter were tom brady and drew brees and the ones he lost to were ben roethlisberger twice mark sanchez david gerrard carson palmer and joe flacco why is he like this i don't know [Music] all right mccoy went 4-9 with a positive touchdown interception ratio so that's good but in week 14 against the steelers he suffered a concussion [Music] wallace is back his two touchdowns and two interceptions looked like a tetris block on his football reference page that led to zero wins [Music] so in the first round of the 2012 draft the browns selected trent richardson running back alabama whoops wrong footage with the 22nd pick in the 2012 nfl draft the cleveland browns select brandon whedon quarterback oklahoma state yep they drafted brandon whedon over david de castro and dante hightower engineers jenkins and bobby wagner and russell wilson t y hilton lamar miller kirk cousins josh norman greg zurline justin tucker johnny hecker did i mention that brandon whedon is 28 years old when they drafted him yeah they drafted a guy who was older than 10 of the previous year's top 20 passers anyway whedon was 5 and 10 as a starter not great but not the worst bronze season ever though it gets worse whedon is a rookie threw for 3 385 yards i repeat a browns quarterback threw for 3 000 yards it doesn't happen often so i like to say every time it does [Music] yeah so this guy named thaddeus lewis started a game and threw a pig also threw a touchdown three for 204 yards anyway next guy [Music] whedon's out by week three [Music] it's brian hoyer he actually wasn't awful completing 60 of his passes five to three touchdown interception 615 yards good job ryan but we're coming back to you later [Music] whedon comes in at half time a week five because brian hoyer's knee was shredded and he was out by week 8. [Music] jason campbell well the touchdown interception rate is positive barely you went 1-7 as a starter man this team could sure use a quarterback [Music] luckily the 2014 draft has plenty of good qb prospects i said good qb prospects and luckily for cleveland the jags uh bortled that pick and now they can pick up one of the top qb's in the class so who's it gonna be teddy bridgewater derek carr jimmy garoppolo logan thomas tom savage aaron murray zach mettenberger taj boyd aj mccarron garrett gil whoa gary gilbert there's a name and the browns even spent one hundred thousand dollars on an analysis of all the qbs in the draft it says teddy bridgewater so who do they go with with the 22nd pick in the 2014 nfl draft the cleveland browns select johnny manziel quarterback texas [Music] look you don't care about hoyer he started the season seven and four but they dropped two straight games and in the first of those back-to-back losses johnny football led a touchdown drive that feels weird to say that drive clearly inspired something in brown's management so in week 15 against the bengals it was time for johnny football touchdown [Music] [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] kirkpatrick [Music] [Applause] they know that their homes [Music] improvisational skills [Music] well it can't get worse connor shaw had one start no one cares back to johnny football so it's 2015 now and the week one starter is well he's got a concussion so back to ladies and gentlemen johnny football threw a touchdown pass got a man open and he hit him inside the 20. touchdown cleveland travis benjamin and then one week later johnny football has a win as a starter i repeat johnny football has a win as a starter but he was benched for josh mccown who promptly lost five in the next six games so back to manzil mania at a first and ten at the 23 of cleveland motion man is andrew hawkins who's back in here after missing a couple of games bounces around and it's intercepted right out of the gate pittsburgh comes up with it and it's arthur moats calamity on the first play from scrimmage the party never stops with you does it johnny [Music] yeah another no-name guy with less than 10 career stars to his name he wasn't awful not good back to okay ignore this interception out of an empty set man feeling the pressure extending the play turning shoulders [Applause] and him headbutting this tablet johnny football now has two count em two wins as a starter but after two losses johnny has one last chance against the chiefs and credit where credit is due the last drive of the game wasn't awful although it appears that the clock both figuratively and literally ran out of time on johnny's career a pickup of 14 look at the clock they got a chunk and they've got no timeouts it's over [Applause] this was his final moment as an nfl player throwing his helmet down in anger which understandable in week 17 he was out with a concussion which really meant he was partying up in vegas allegedly that should cover my back oh and the browns dumped him at the end of the year [Music] yeah i don't care next season please [Music] remember a couple quarterbacks ago when the browns took brandon whedon the old rookie yeah so second overall in that draft was robert griffin iii his career started out great but he got hurt like truly a lot so the browns picked him up at a dirt cheap rate and brown's management good move there scooby stonks and all we got this yard line and that's a huge collision on the near sideline are you kidding [Music] well back to mccown who threw two touchdowns and two picks not the best game ever [Music] so in the 2016 draft the browns had the second overall pick but they traded it away for the eighth pick a couple later picks another first rounder and another second rounder with that pick they grabbed corey coleman a wide receiver out of baylor over ryan kelly and xavier howard and derek henry and michael thomas and kevin bayerd and yannick and gawkway tyree kill where was i going with this oh right they also drafted cody kessler in the third round over dak prescott sorry last one i swear anywho he got the week three start yes that means the browns have now started a different qb each of the three weeks of the season it's gonna be one of those seasons isn't it five starts five losses decent stats [Music] my count gets one start one loss not great stats [Music] three starts three losses it's not great stats [Music] one start one loss decent stats cleveland you won a game thanks to not one but two missed field goals yeah whatever four starts three losses eh i don't care well it's that time again the 2017 nfl draft the browns have the first pick the qb prospects available are patrick mahomes desean watson mitch trubisky josh jobs nathan peterman sean kaiser davis webb you know what it's a top heavy class they have the first pick who do they go with miles garrett all right defensive end texas a m not a bad pick but again my homes anyway in the second round they picked up deshawn kaiser over juju smith schuster and alvin kamara and kareem hunt and george kill i'm gonna stop now kaiser's first five starts were all losses five nine ratios so not good who's the backup kevin hogan you threw three interceptions including a pick six against the texans go texans well deshawn's next nine starts were all losses wait no snap that means they're own 15 again maybe they can beat the steelers who are arresting a bunch of starters including big ben well there are two minutes left and cleveland is faced with a fourth and two can they keep the drive alive duke johnson one on one with joe hayden at the bottom of the screen not a great matchup for the browns cory coleman in the backfield kaiser under pressure somehow escapes [Applause] [Music] see what's worse this drop or dan arlovski's safety i think it's the drop because it's week 17 and it's on fourth and one well i'll add another qb to the trash can and you know i guess this is the universe balancing itself after the cavs won the nba finals and raj davis broke chapman davis 6'6 [Music] the bills after making the playoffs for the first time in 17 years promptly got rid of tyrod taylor the starting quarterback of that team now don't worry about them they drafted josh allen they're fine because he was available the browns swooped in and grabbed him boom qb stones we got this it's like poetry it rhymes taylor then immediately ended the browns losing streak uh well kinda they tied with the steelers thanks to a missed kick and a blocked kick in week two on fourth and five down six late in the game taylor corked one out deep taylor for the end zone catch made touchdown antonio callaway [Applause] oh i don't believe it the browns are gonna gonzales oh the extra point are you kidding me are you kidding me it's not good he missed an extra point unfortunately for the browns the saints drove down the field and made a field goal to give themselves a three-point lead but fortunately for cleveland they themselves drove down the field to set up a potential game-tying field goal are you kidding gonzalez he's missed to the left he's missed to the right and the saints are gonna win this game the frustration for cleveland continues drives down a lane back out to green green for three off the mark no good marquis morris has it throws it inside and throws it out of bounds in week three against the jets down 14 to nothing taylor suffered a concussion which meant it's time for with the first pick in the 2018 nfl draft the cleveland browns select baker mayfield wow oklahoma it is baker mayfield yes learning nothing from drafting johnny football the browns went with the party boy from the southern school and they picked him over josh allen and lamar jackson and quentin nelson bradley chubb mika fitzpatrick jermaine edmonds and james philip lindsay michael dixon denzel ward nick shub wait a minute anyway mayfield came in for taylor and immediately completed his first pass heisman trophy winner former walk-on finds landry [Applause] and his third ball to start the second half they just picked up their fourth sack they come on a blitz pass is caught landry stays up but he's short of a first down and then boom field goal he pushes it through then denzel award the team's other first round pick in 2018 yanks the ball away for a forced fumble they turned bridgewater into a third round pick the saints here's a nice throw in catch and a first down but the ball is out anderson made the catch and denzel ward the rookie takes it inside the 10. just took it right out of his arms that sets up baker with first and goal but the browns can't get anything going and settle for a field goal then jarvis landry somehow held on to this catch to bring the browns to the 1 yard line so it's first and goal again but this time cleveland punches it in for the touchdown sets up first and goal from the one hide trying to take it in and he does touchdown grounds and now for the two-point conversion callaway at the bottom of the screen this to tie it mayfield [Applause] defense number 21. hold it offense these files all set redo the trash okay browns let's get this right let's see what todd haley and this offense wants to do here on this second try comes in tight in this formation looks like pressure off the edge a little trick play and a throw to baker mayfield to tie the game from jarvis landry is that is that cleveland cleveland i'm really calling that one yes taking inspiration from doug peterson remember him in the super bowl seven and a half months earlier the browns ran cleveland cleveland or maybe whatever the patriots were trying to do like a couple minutes prior but after that the jets retook the lead on a field goal but then mayfield brilliantly led cleveland down the field to take the lead for the first time to get their first win in over 600 days the browns just need to stop sam darnold sam was drafted two picks after mayfield and aside from that pick six on his first career pass which was really terrible he's been pretty solid and oh it's fourth down this to have any hope here in week three pass what a catch jermaine curse the very next play is it would have to be called for from the booth inside a two minutes pass picked joe schubert oh no it's happening it's happening but the browns don't gain a first down so the jets burn all three timeouts and after the punt the jets need to go 94 yards in 56 seconds can they do it well it starts out bad for cleveland they better have an answer for blocking him from the end zone pass is caught big chunky yards to player and the former cleveland brown is out to the 31. but then it ends pretty well on second down and 12. darnold airs it out downfield pass is picked by mitchell browns are going to win as they revamp this secondary mayfield and the browns get the win over the jets [Music] man that was intense and you know the story from here baker becomes the first quarterback to start 16 games in a season more than once since coming back he led the browns to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and he led them to their first playoff win since 1994 when bill belichick was the head coach and they beat the patriots wait what baker you truly are the savior of the browns you
