we're in California driving the new Toyota Tacoma pickup this is a big deal for Toyota and a really big deal for me as a former Tacoma owner I'm excited to drive this new four-cylinder turbo so let's get at it quieter than the outgoing model that's for sure it's quieter than the outgoing model but it also has a pretty neat sound to it because there's a brand new base engine under the hood of this thing what is it Andrea the standard I force powertrain is a 2.4 L turbocharged 4 cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission 278 horsepower and 317 lb feet of torque there is an available six-speed manual transmission available on select models with automatic rev matching and anti-stall Technology manual transmission models produce 270 horsepower and 310 lb feet of torque in Canada the Tacoma comes exclusively in four-wheel drive in the US rear wheeel drive models are available coming in the spring of 2024 is the more powerful I force Max Hybrid powertrain it's the same 2.4 L turbocharged 4 cylinder but it has 326 horsepower and 465 lb feet of torque this nearly doubles the torque of the current V6 model and it's all thanks to a 48 horsepower electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission so something to digest as we go through this video this new turbo 4-cylinder engine has Peak torque at just 1700 RPM and it has more power and torque than the old V6 so right now we're going to get into what do you get with it this new Tacoma the Bas trim comes with an 8- in touchscreen Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto a 7-in driver display heated front seats manual driver and passenger seats cloth upholstery Dual Zone climate control 17-in Wheels a coil spring rear suspension and Toyota safety Sense 3.0 so Andrea mentioned their key standard feature you get coil spring rear suspension that's in Canada in the United States on the base model you still have leaf springs available that's to keep the price down well there's lots of buttons so many buttons so many dials and what are we going to put it in you got to put it in ask for subscribing if you can hit that notification Bell you'll be notified when all of our reviews drop and then you can watch them and we do this a couple car review twice a week week the first one drops on Wednesday we put another one out on Saturday so make sure to like And subscribe but also follow along on Instagram it's also how you get questions in for halfway through the video it's motormouth Andrea for me it's motormouth Auto and the links are below the like button so right now we're going to run through what were the key things that they were working on for this new model and did they achieve it what are they Andrea well Comfort level was a big one I have to say when I sat in the old model my legs achd and and it didn't take long for them to ache it just wasn't very comfortable they also wanted to make sure that this new model fit in their garage they wanted better drivability you know people complained that when they drove it the transmission was always hunting for Gears and then finally they wanted a more fuel efficient Tacoma so on fuel efficiency it's 10% more efficient depending on the trim that you get even though you've got more power more torque uh you've got more features it is roughly 10% more fuel efficient on seat Comfort we're going to talk about this more when we get into questions coffee and cars but right off the bat Andrea mission accomplished there for sure and dimensionally we're also going to touch on that later on questions coffee and cars uh it will fit in your garage that's the teaser and what was the other one drivability you're driving it what do you think well I got to say the 8-speed automatic transmission is smooth it shifts quickly what a difference you know I have to say the last Model when we reviewed it I said to Zach why do people buy this it's uncomforable uh and and I didn't like the transmission what a big Improvement I mean they really nailed it with this powertrain okay so the whole thing about doing a turbo engine is how it calibrates with the rest of the vehicle uh Sheldon Brown is the chief engineer we had a lot of chats with him today and he said if you get one part of the recipe wrong basically you bake the cake and he had all of these parameters that they tried to hint to make sure that drivability was improved so I noticed right away Andrea it's quieter the on-road manners are better we're going to go over some bumpy stuff now and we just went over some you know it's it's smooth it's quiet the seats are more comfortable if you're driving this every day you're going to have a better experience well Zach and I were on a twisty Road and when I say twisty I mean twisty like a road that you would drive a Porsche 911 on and it was really good the steering is light the maneuverability is good it took the corners with ease this is a pickup truck I wasn't expecting it to be as good as this on road you will not be disappointed when it comes to drivability and comfort they did a much much better job uh than before the Tacoma has a completely box frame which improves the rigidity and the strength of the frame the hood the tailgate and the outer skin of the bed the painted part are all aluminum the composite bed now has glass fiber added and it's 14% lighter the bed has 7% greater volume and an available tunnel cover Toyota gave us an average for towing capacity of 6,400 lb and it has an increased payload of over 1,700 lb for the hybrid Max grades so this doesn't have the towing capacity of some of its competitors but after speaking to Sheldon about this he said we weren't going to to get into kind of like a fighting war with their competitors they just needed to have enough towing capacity to satisfy their customer and he also said the tow rating is not been announced for each individual trim but the number they gave is going to be accurate in all situations so driving in high temperatures going up a mountain you'll have the same towing capacity as you do at sea level on a cooler day the Tacoma Now features suspensions that are specific for each grade for example the TRD sport has read TRD sport tune shocks for a more responsive feel but the biggest change for the majority of this new Tacoma is the fact that they've gone to a coil spring at the back it's going to give you better on-road manners it's going to give you some articulation and the other thing is that leaf spring is really only on the base model in the United States in fact on the front suspension you can get a sway bar disconnect on the higher off-road capable vehicles to give you more wheel articulation Andrea wheel articulation is is important when you're Offroad certainly is now if you're wondering about the I force Max models what will they be well it's going to be Trail Hunter TRD Pro and then the limited model those will not be arriving until the spring so depending on the trim you get you get different looks uh the more aggressive off-road ones are inspired by Baja off-road trucks with the big fenders and the big wheels Andrea likes that look I do I do like that look I still think I would with the limited trim just yeah it just is like that Comfort a little bit more upscale looking I think Toyota did a really good job with keeping the Tacoma the way the customers would want it it's got that athletic it's got a rugged look to it I think the styling actually is really nice I like it better than the outgoing model yeah it looks like it's Tacoma it's just a modern version of that all right so what do you get on the outside there are two cab styles a four-door double cab with a five or 6ft bed and the power tailgate can be open and closed from the inside or outside of the vehicle and a 24-hour wat power inverter is available and a new two-door extra cab that fits only two passengers unfortunately that model is not available in Canada at this time but it may come at a later date there are different wheel designs ranging in size from 17in to 18in wheels and available 33in tires depending on the trim you get ground clearance goes from 9 1/2 in to 11 in the interior is much improved with updated Tech it comes standard with an 8in touchcreen available 14in and of course Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto I find that the design elements inside remind me a little bit of the Sequoia and the tundra yeah they want it to be rugged obviously they know their Market it's a truck it has to look rugged you never forget it says Tacoma right on the dash iate grab they put here but it's very Toyota goes their vles very logically you've got a nice charging pad area in the center of the console the dials are big the switches are big you could use them with gloves this is engineered in in Michigan it gets cold in Michigan they know about all of the stuff that people need to do with their truck and guess what Toyota added a heated steering wheel that was a complaint of mine about the Tacoma and it's heated all the way around how about that all right here's a little sneak peek of something we also asked for from Toyota and it we'll get into that in questions coffee and cars yeah you have USBC charging ports that have quick charging capability now and if you get the larger 14-in screen there's actually a USB connection behind it say you had an action camera mounted or or something like a dash cam you could plug it right in to the back of the screen have it right on the window pretty cool and the Interiors are unique for each grade so I like that you have something that's different depending on the model that you choose and different color trims available features include a JBL premium audio speaker a JBL Flex portable speaker a head-up display ISO dnamic performance seats with damping system to help you absorb those bumps available ventilated front seats digital rear view mirror and a moon roof so here's me getting in the back seat of this thing it is tight there is really not much space best for kids and it's kind of squishy I actually sat in the previous model as we were driving to the event and I was thrilled that I got to do that just to give me a really great understanding of the Comfort level I would say it's about the same as this new model it's all been centered on the front but you do get three times more storage under the seats the extra cab and double cab both offer 39.7 in of front row Headroom and 41.8 in of front legro the double cab has 38 in of rear headro and 33.7 in of rear legro well you've got some great questions on this about space time now for questions coffee and cars oh this is the part of the video I like cuz we're going to switch we're now in the Tacoma TRD sport with the manual transmission this is the Zach Spencer spec this is the one I would get but right now it's your questions from Instagram please if you can list height of the various models but especially the TRD off-road now actually this gentleman asked for length width and height so we're going to cover it all this was just a followup question I just want to clarify that Bumper to Bumper this vehicle has not changed at all and door Todo it has not changed at all one of the main things when building this vehicle was that it fit in people's garages so that was a really big deal I just want to say one thing on that so the door too width is the same however the fenders are flared and the track is wider so Andrew's got the dimensions now yeah so the track is wider the tread width is 3 in more the wheelbase 4.5 in extra and the cab height 1.2 in so the double cab with the 6ft bed overall length is 226.24 bed 213 in hasn't changed that's the same as the previous models yes the width 77.9 in now the height ranges depending on the model you get the SR5 example is 73.8 and then if you go for the TRD it is 74.6 in and I do notice getting in this with the TRD sport that we're in here but they'll sell you running boards an accessory the dealer no problem I do notice though getting in the roof is kind of low you kind of have to do one of these when you get yeah I notic that too there's nothing you can do about that because that's just the class of truck yes so that brings us to our next question I'm very interested in the Tacoma model curious cab and rear seat space as I'm 62 long legged fuel gas model versus hybrid is it worth the difference I'm in Ontario love your input and keep up your great work okay we work backwards on this so we don't have the hybrid yet they're going to have a separate program for that in the spring so all we have is Turbo gas yeah uh and and this this gentleman is the opposite of me he's long-legged and he's 6'2 and I'm short-legged but I have this I just put the seat back for questions coughing cars I put the seat all the way back and I I'm not even touching the pedals so long-legged that's Prett good now I actually have longer legs than Zach even though I'm only 57 you're showing off now uh anyway I just feel like there's tons of room in here there's not a lot of room when you have the seat back let me just put okay so that's how much space there is if I have the seat all the way back that has not changed it's way more comfortable than the front yes and also the hit point has increased by 30 mm about and every single vehicle across all grades whether you get power seats or manual seats there's a vertical height adjustment so that makes a huge difference okay I'm going to go this is this is for shorter people so this has a traditional SUV feel so if you drive an SUV and you're I still have Headroom and I have a commanding view over the hood so this is now they did increase the head room because of the HP Point by the MIM as well I mean this is pretty good I'm going to go all look at me all right so 30 mm is just over an inch yeah oh the other thing they did is they added more telescopic more tilt so you're going to be able to find a a position in this no problem yes I really enjoy your reviews thank you and the bits of humor you add to them have they given the octane rate waiting for each engine of those power and torque numbers also wondering if the seats in the TRD Pro are standard they seem a little gimmicky to me so those are the special yes however those seats are only available on TRD Pro for octane yeah so this runs on regular gas yeah 87 and so will the iForce Max Hybrid as well so you don't have to worry about putting premium fuel in this vehicle and now it's time for our Hot Topic what's this one Andrea which trims engine get the manual so this is the truck I would get this is the TRD sport with the manual transmission manual sales you would think would be higher but in Canada for example we asked the executives about 5 6% and the access cab that was only about 5 or 6% as well and you know what's interesting about that access cab is that 50% of buyers deleted that rear seat so they were obviously using it as a dry storage so uh as much as this speaks to my soul it doesn't speak to a lot of other people so this is limited to specific trims so we're going to run through it it's different North and South of the Border in Canada there are two manual options double cabs with 5-ft beds it's the TRD off-road and the TRD Sport Plus in the US you get three all 4x4 and double cap the SR TRD Sport and TRD off-road by the way no manual with the hybrid but it doesn't come with a CB so that's good all right let's get into all the things you want to know like pricing fuel economy and More in our vital stats let's start with pricing we'll do Canada first and then move on to the US here's the MSRP for the gas model the hybrid pricing has not been announced yet the base model starts at just under $47,000 Canadian and goes all the way up to over $58,000 for the TRD off-road premium 5ft bed in the US there are so many different gas model configurations from extra cab and double cab to 4x2 to 4x4 the Tacoma starts at $315,000 in the US for the SR extra cab 4x2 and goes all the way up to just over 52,000 for The Limited double cab 4x4 there are lots of different trims for different budgets take a look at them they're all on the screen for you with so many configurations fuel economy will vary so we've gone with a 4x4 double cap for this turbo 4 it gets 12.4 L per 100 km in the city 10.2 on the highway that's 19 m per gallon City 24 m per gallon highway the fuel economy for the hybrid powertrain will be confirmed closer to its on sale date Toyota has not confirmed Towing for specific trims they've given an average of 6,400 lb the hybrid Max because it's heavier is rated at 6,000 lb the warranty is 3E 60,000 km or 36,00 ,000 miles in the United States you get complimentary scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 mil so Tacoma is the king when it comes to sales because they never abandon this segment others have come and gone what else can you buy for your consideration four vehicles for you to consider up first is the Nissan Frontier with a 3.8 L V6 310 horsepower and a starting price just under $444,000 the Honda ridg line with a 32 l V6 280 horsepower and a starting price of $495,000 the Chevrolet Colorado with a 2.7 L turbocharged 4cylinder 237 horsepower and a starting price just over $37,000 the Ford Ranger with a turbo 2.3 l 4 cylinder 270 horsepower and a starting price of $435,000 so there are four midsize pickups for you to consider lightning round two things we like two things we'd like to see improved I'm really impressed impressed with the Comfort level in this new Tacoma and I'm impressed with this new turbo 4 what I'd like to see is a manual on the base model just an inexpensive manual option yeah that's probably the biggest negative of this truck is the prices have gone way up you get more truck but it's expensive yeah we do have an interview with Tacoma chief engineer Sheldon brown on the channel so make sure you check that out yeah we'll leave a link in the description and we're standing in front of the I force Max this is the high hybrid version of Tacoma not available for us to drive today so we are going to get a chance to drive that in the spring Toyota has created a Tacoma for different budgets and different Lifestyles mine's right over there he wants one
