All Imperial Ranks

In the Imperial Military rank insignia plaques were used to identify the rank of an officer. They consisted of red, blue, and sometimes yellow squares that were big enough so soldiers could identify the rank of an officer from a far distance. They were most widely used in the Imperial Navy. The lowest rank, the midshipman, only possessed 2 squares. Midshipman were still in training and usually never saw live combat until they graduated to a higher rank A lieutenant had 4 squares. Lieutenant was the most common rank among the navy, held by almost everyone on the ship other than the captain or admiral. A captain had 6 squares. Captains were the commanding officer of a single ship, with at times being given command of a small fleet. An Admiral typically had 8 squares, with at times 6 squares depending on the size of fleet they were commanding. Admirals generally were in command of a fleet of capital ships. A Fleet Admiral had 10 squares. They were in command of entire fleets, usually within a sector. A High Admiral had 12 squares. They were in charge of Fleet Admirals and had control of entire Sector Fleets. The highest rank was the Grand Admiral, which had 12 squares, with 3 of them being yellow. Their power varied, with some being given control of a few fleets within a sector, while others were given control of entire regions with unlimited power. Rank plaques weren’t used as often in the Imperial Army, with most of them usually corresponding with the same plaque as their Navy counterpart. Generals had 8 squares. They had command over an entire army. High Generals had a single strip of 6 red squares. They had command over a system army. An officer in the Stormtrooper Corps had a single strip of 4 blue squares. Other ranks included Moffs, who had 12 squares. They had almost total control of an entire sector, from the military to public affairs. Grand Moffs had 12 squares, with 3 yellow ones on the bottom. They had complete control over specific areas assigned by the Emperor, like Grand Moff Tarkin having complete control over the Outer Rim.
