the Alien series has been around for a long time with Xenomorphs appearing in movies Comics novels games and chopsticks for longer than I've been alive but like with any iconic franchise whose lifespan is measured in not years but decades the quality style and frequency of those appearances have been all over the map video games are starting to seem like the best long-term vessel for this IP going forward and I'm totally fine with that with the upcoming new alien movie and TV show and probably a couple more games on the way I think it's prudent to take stock of where we're at with it and take a look at some of the more noteworthy alien games that have at least stood out to me over the years for better and for worse so join me on this bug hunt to find the games that represent the franchise best weed out the ones that don't and maybe we can get an idea of how future games and movies can learn from them [Music] thank you alien on the Atari 2600 is about as basic as well I guess every other game on the Atari 2600 that's certainly not a bad thing though alien on the Atari plays it pretty safe by being essentially a Pac-Man clone so you run from Aliens collect dots and then go after the aliens after grabbing the Big Shiny dot that makes them vulnerable you know like from Alien the game's manual makes a little effort to recontextualize the Pac-Man gameplay by calling the dots eggs that you have to Crush by walking over them and the shiny dot a pulsar but it's still just Pac-Man which is fine by the way if you can't beat Pac-Man you can always join him alien does give you a flamethrower as a way to defend yourself but it really just deters the alien for a couple seconds and it doesn't always work you also sometimes get a bonus stage which is a Frogger clone where you can't move left or right for some reason just in a straight line up or down which means I have not beaten it once I got close one time though so despite not having really anything in the way of originality it does copy from the best so that keeps it from being too bad I don't know if I recommend it though you're probably better off just playing Pac-Man or Frogger for the 20 bucks or so it tends to go for on eBay you could definitely do better you could also do a lot worse on the 2600 so I don't know it's alien it's on Atari moving on Alien 3 had its own game on several different platforms and they all had some pretty big differences from each other and the Alien 3 movie itself with none of them really having much in common at all with the film other than bald Ripley and some level design cues that might vaguely remind you of fiorina 161 the prison planet setting we'll start with the NES version Alien 3 was not your typical action game which for the time was pretty neat your main objective is to find all of the cocooned colonists and escape the stage within the time limit not simply going from left to right like most Shooters of the time the levels are intricate and Labyrinthian making multiple attempts and memorization an absolute requirements especially considering the time limit this type of gameplay was an acquired taste for me as I tend to prefer more straight up linear experiences from this era and I almost always hate time limits and I hate them here too it's nice to see the different weapons having different uses though you can drop grenades down tunnels shoot certain doors with a grenade launcher blowing them open or use the pulse rifle to do some damage on aliens from a little bit of a distance not a bad effort considering the limitations of the NES but it was really the Genesis version that worked best for me which is pretty similar gameplay wise but with far superior graphics and music as you might expect Graphics are more detailed sound effects are light years beyond what the NES was capable of and the music was completely overhauled with one of the low-key best osts on the system in my opinion controls also feel just a little bit tighter although not that different although the more zoomed in view of the gameplay can make dealing with aliens more difficult since by the time you see them on the screen they're already charging at you when you have about half a second to do something about it this makes every encounter a close encounter the flamethrower the only real choice to defend yourself most of the time overall it's definitely a similar enough game to Bear the same name to the NES version but it's definitely a more refined version of it if you don't mind the smaller view I'd say this is easily the superior version it also has one of the coolest game over screens ever that kind of makes you feel bad but it's also kind of Awesome [Music] if I had to nitpick one thing though it would be that the radar is kinda pointless by the time something shows up on the radar it's usually also on the screen so I just kind of wish they had either done something more interesting with it or gotten it out of my way overall this is a pretty cool game for the Genesis I do recommend it as well as the NES version if you'd rather play that one I didn't like it much when it first came out but then again I was six and an idiot look at me what a dumb idiot now that my taste is much more refined I can see it for what it is which is an okay game oh the Super Nintendo got its own Alien 3 game and this one is totally different also I gotta admit I just couldn't get into it once again it's a step up in terms of visuals and overall presentation but this is a completely different game from the other two and in my opinion a worse one if you don't like the open-ended design of the first two then this one will almost certainly drive you nuts it definitely did me in this Alien 3 you accept missions from a terminal fight your way to the objective do the thing and then return to the terminal to accept the next mission not a bad idea but the path you need to take isn't really Illustrated Too Well by the terminal map and you have to run back to the terminal every time you want to look at it so if your photographic memory isn't amazing prepare to do a lot of wandering around like I did I guess this is what you could call the seeds of the metroidvania genre but the way this game approaches it is just a recipe for confusion and boredom for what it's worth it controls well with each of Ripley's guns being assigned to different buttons and it looks in sound sounds pretty good for the time [Music] there's definitely some things to appreciate here and had it been a more typical Run and Gun side scroller it probably would have been pretty awesome but yeah Life's too short for this I'm done moving on all right now we're getting to the good stuff alien Trilogy again doesn't really line up with any one movie precisely but it does borrow elements from the first three mostly the first two to create its own thing which I can totally get behind at its core it's one of the many Doom clones of the era kinda like Duke Nukem or Shadow Warrior but don't let that fool you into thinking it's unoriginal or lazy at all this is actually one of the better Doom clones ever made with damn good shooting good use of iconic weapons like the pulse rifle smart gun and others and this was the first game to really represent these weapons accurately as far as I can tell the shotgun in particular feels great to use dare I say it's one of my favorite FPS shotguns ever certainly of its time anyway health and armor management is also a thing and when maxed out it can be a pretty generous life bar but if anything gets close enough to you to hurt you all that will diminish pretty quickly especially with the facehuggers which climb on your face but somehow don't impregnate you so I don't know we're not thinking about it too much here other genre Staples like running around and unlocking doors to advance finding secret areas and lots of enemies lurking around every corner are all here in Spades you also have these CG death cut scenes every time you die which were pretty popular at the time you also have the occasional boss fight in the form of gigantic Queens which are pretty fun albeit a bit bullet spongy all of this puts it pretty squarely in the Doom clone genre or as the kids call them now Boomer Shooters you know I'm only 35 here but whatever I guess I'm a boomer whatever it's fine [Music] game mixes in a lot of 10 tension and atmosphere from the Alien films so well it could just as accurately be described as an early action horror game the same genre that games like fear or dead space would eventually belong to and popularize the Spooky not very James Horner soundtrack was definitely a bold choice for the music and it worked out well I think [Music] alien Trilogy uses the ps1's short draw distance to its Advantage kinda like how Silent Hill did to create uncertainty and anxiety but instead of the gray fog in Alien Trilogy you're surrounded by constant Darkness only being able to see 10 or 15 feet in front of you most of the time which makes the bright light from the exit elevator give you a rush of relief and comfort that the game only lets you enjoy for a moment before throwing you into the next stage also like Silent Hill and also like Doom you have a map an alien Trilogy that you'll be referring back to quite a bit to make your way around the increasingly maze-like levels although here it's created as you go making it impossible to know what to expect around the next corner or beyond the next door although sometimes you might stumble upon the auto mapper which fills it all in for you the PS1 version of alien Trilogy is the one I recommend but the Sega Saturn had a pretty decent one too it doesn't run quite as smoothly as it does on the PlayStation but it does seem to handle contrast a bit better either are fine you really can't miss but I tend to side with the smoothness of the PS1 version alien trilogy's combination of horror elements and doom clone elements are really what make it special and keep it totally recommendable and playable today it's clearly the ideal formula for an alien game at least in my opinion if you do want to play it and you're not currently used to how games like this control on Old consoles I highly recommend copying the ISO from your disk and emulating it on duckstation so you can remap the controls and make it play more like a modern game and you can also use a modern controller in fact do this with every PS1 game and thank me later kind of like how Alien Resurrection as a movie was a step back from the original trilogy in just about every way so was this game Resurrection on the PS1 is not what I would call a bad shooter though it actually retains a lot of the horror vibes from Trilogy and was ahead of its time in some ways plenty of flickering lights and spooky Ambient sound effects work pretty well to create a tense Vibe although I would argue it doesn't hold on to that Vibe as well as Trilogy did because the game just gets so ruthlessly difficult there is a lengthier build up to fighting the first alien in this game though which makes for a fun opening oh the 2D Sprites for enemies used in Trilogy are traded out for polygonal characters which haven't aged as well in my opinion but were more technically impressive at the time in fact this game is technically impressive in a number of ways including the controls feeling much more in line with what you would want out of a shooter today dual sticks and all something the game was actually criticized for at the time with that style of control though also came the requirement of more precise aiming on your part which the game doesn't make very easy with somewhat imprecise movement and a low frame rate you can definitely get used to it but I think the Doom style hipfire of Trilogy is a better fit for shooters from this era weapons here are reminiscent of the movie and generally pretty distinct but I can't help but continue yearning for the original Loadout that most other alien games have enemy variety isn't great but level variety makes up for that a bit with larger more explorable areas than Trilogy had you also get to play as other characters from the movie at certain times I can definitely appreciate the production value here as some of the game's atmospheric spook house tricks seem like they kind of paved the way for games like Doom 3 and dead space after it unlike those games though I ultimately feel Alien Resurrection isn't super fun to play the manual saves complete lack of checkpoints and long levels are fine ideas on their own but when mixed with the game's General difficulty and clunky shooting the game feels downright diabolical and not in a fun way and I think that drags it down quite a bit you could certainly do worse with first-person shooters from that era codename tanka but you could also do better games like disrupter or powerslave are much more fun to play even though they might not be as Forward Thinking as Resurrection all in all I put this one somewhere in the middle I guess it's certainly not bad but I wouldn't call it particularly good either honestly I kind of feel like the aliens versus predator franchise is sort of its own thing it spawned a lot of games comics and movies all on its own and sort of has its own Vibe now the three most well-known AVP games are really made up of three separate games each a Predator game a colonial marine game and an alien game where you actually play the xenomorph itself so I'll look at the latter two and leave the Predator modes for a predator games video later on down the road AVP from the Jaguars first up and it is a highly regarded game of that era but you know I'm just gonna come out and say it this game is kind of not good it basically positions itself as a doom clone and yeah it has its moments but it never even comes close to Doom or any other good Boomer shooter it runs like hell it looks rough and has very little Variety in just about any area you might think that would be due to the limitations of the Jaguar but you can't really say that because there are other first-person shooters on the system like Wolfenstein and actual doom and they're fine the three modes in AVP on the Jag are all pretty redundant sluggish and ultimately boring to me with the colonial marine mode being the best out of the the three I guess the levels are huge and if you can wander around enough to get a sense of place then you'll eventually find some weapons and plenty of aliens to kill problem is it's just not really fun doing so if you are going to play it I highly recommend emulating this one so you can make the controls less horrible the Jaguar controller doesn't lend itself well to any game but especially a game like this playing the alien is an interesting diversion and I'm glad they took a stab at it but trading barbs with enemies who can hurt you well before you can hurt them doesn't really stay interesting for more than about five seconds I can see why the game is Coveted it's definitely interesting especially from a historical standpoint and as an alien predator and AVP fan I'm glad I own it but it's not a game I recommend playing generally [Music] on the complete other end of the spectrum avp-2000 has aged pretty damn well as a PC game that controls are modern and familiar mods exist to Spruce it up if you want but I think it's okay as it is even if your PC is a potato odds are it'll run this game fine the use of darkness and real-time lighting is pretty impressive considering the game is over 20 years old now and it captures that alien feel pretty good turn on the power and then wait further a more James horner-esque orchestral score real voice acting and being a truly 3D game with no concessions on that go a long way to realizing the vision of all three campaigns here extremely fluid movement and tight controls make it decidedly more playable than most of the first person alien games that came before this the alien campaign here is still the lesser of the three though stealth actually sort of works here and hacking up Marines with your claws is pretty amusing for a while but outside of that I still don't really have a lot too positive to say about it you crawl around on the walls and sealing accomplishing tasks and killing people and that's about it okay getting constantly disoriented along the way at least I did it's a valiant effort to make the idea of actually playing the alien work but it doesn't do too much for me once the novelty wears off which doesn't take long that aside it is a huge step up from the Jaguar attempt but still not the reason to get the game the colonial marine mode is the star of the show here with aliens predators and lots of alieny locations to fight the men dark hallways lit only with emergency lights and flickering fluorescence nailed the atmosphere better than any alien game before it large indoor and outdoor areas are instantly recognizable as the game makes you go back and forth from taking out groups of aliens and quake-like Arenas to anxiously trying to locate just one as it stalks you through a dark hallway foreign you can also throw down flares for some limited relief from the darkness but they burn out eventually like alien Trilogy the colonial marine campaign in avp2000 really seems to understand the right mix of action atmosphere and a little bit of horror and it does a fantastic job of putting it all to use this is one of the better games in the series I highly recommend it especially with how cheap you can get it for now which is main gate hasn't budged AVP 2010 or as I'll call it avp3 came out on the 316 the PS3 and the PC and boy do I recommend the steam version over the other ones not only is the frame rate double what it was on those consoles but the game has actually received some really nice DirectX 11 updates that bring it up to a pretty respectable standard I think begin the breaching procedure I'm running it on an RTX 3060 but I imagine you could probably get away with running it on a 1060 or maybe even something less the xenomorph campaign is another improvement over the last one and probably makes the idea work about as good as it can it plays pretty similarly to the alien mode in the last game but with a few control options to make things a little more intuitive and a few Collectibles and even a little exploration along the way stealth also works much better here foreign this is still easily the worst of the three modes but I respect how far they've come with it since the original Jaguar one the colonial marine game again is the best reason to buy this game the level designs really do a great job at evoking Vibes of the second alien movie as well as a jungle level that's surprisingly good at doing the same for the Predator Universe this actually establishes a more unique AVP feel of its own as opposed to the other Marine modes in the other AVP games which are essentially just alien games with predators in them it's all held together by a pretty decent story too so yeah this is actually a pretty solid game here well after I had enough footage in time with the game to do this review of it I just kept on playing Everything feels right the sound effects the environments the way it melds both alien and Predator ideas into one sort of unique thing it's just really well done hell even the voice acting is pretty decent shooting is perhaps a tad sluggish by today's Twitchy Call of Duty and fortnite standards but I actually kind of like it there's a nice chunky deliberate feel to it that kind of reminds me of the Killzone games which I've always liked aliens are strong here and take a lot of hits making your pistol borderline useless after the first couple of levels best to get headshots whenever you can and there's a nice little pop sound when you do get one nice nice the game prompts you to block when something gets too close which I really don't like you still take damage and the prompt covers up your view so it's like why even do this and rather the game just let me decide for myself if I want to shoot run block or punch or whatever this is very much a game from 2010 though as intrusive on-screen button prompts where all the rage back then the flares from the 2000 game make a return but aren't as crucial this time around they're still helpful though also like the game from 2000 this one does a good job of scaring the hell out of you from time to time which I appreciated overall I really like this one it's wacky enough to have both creatures together in the same game but serious enough to really make you buy into that as ridiculous as it is so it really feels more like its own AVP experience than anything before it at least anything I've played honestly I can give this game a really strong recommendation if the series ever comes back this is how I think they should approach it focus on one game that's like this as opposed to spreading out Development Across three totally different games and winding up with these wildly different results colonial Marines has a long storied history that's been talked about and analyzed out of hell and I'm not really interested in adding to that cacophony but I will talk about it as a game and more importantly as an alien game while it was a cool idea with it being a sequel to the aliens movie all I remember about it was that the writing and the performances felt more like a parody of aliens than something worthy of continuing the story but you know what I've come back to several games over the years after a bad first impression and learned to appreciate them in a different way maybe I can do that here I'm also making sure to play the PC version today with all the updates and fixes that have come out to give it the best possible chance to change my mind but does all of that redeem it well no it's still not a very good game it's not horrible though like if I can separate how disappointed I was when it first launched on the PS3 from what I tend to expect from a decent shooter nowadays this really isn't that bad of a game generally speaking Still Standing like people who say this is the worst game of all time are definitely full of it and clearly haven't played AVP on the Jaguar kind of detach yourself as an alien fan a little bit and just play it like a shooter with Xenomorphs in it it's not too bad the multiplayer modes seem to be the focus here and unfortunately it's tough to find a game to join now so campaign it is and in some ways it kind of reminds me of the Marine campaign in avp-3 as it's a totally decent shooter with weapons and music that look and sound right for the aliens universe but unlike avp3 it's missing Soul the story is an interesting setup with you playing the rescue team that Ripley's crew called for before finding their own way off the site but it doesn't really go anywhere with that other than presenting you with a handful of callbacks and references thrown in to make you say oh I remember that from the movie which is fine but it's not enough on its own it also doesn't help that the aliens here are notably dumber than they were in avp-3 which was a much smaller game that almost certainly had a smaller budget than this one in avp-3 they would run around on the walls and the ceilings didn't surprise you by popping out of random spots and you do get some of that in colonial Marines but more often than not they just kind of run at you so it can sometimes feel more like a serious Sam game than an alien one one thing I do really like about it though is that they actually put the motion tracker in the game where you have to deliberately press a button to use it as opposed to just always having it on the screen like in previous games this was a good idea that adds a little bit of tension since you can't have your weapon out at the same time I like that there's also a good amount of customization and upgrades for each weapon which I always enjoy despite having actual actors from aliens music and sound effects from Aliens in an actual Canon alien story all of which should have made this the best aliens game ever it's ultimately just an okay one if you hated the game back when it launched on the 360 and the PS3 because of its various issues I can recommend giving it another chance now with a fresh set of eyes and a decent gaming PC just make sure you get it on sale don't leave Marines behind you would think that the alien IP would take a break from video games for a while after the debacle of colonial Marines but it was only a couple years later that we got alien isolation on the PS4 Xbox One and PC there's even PS3 360 and Nintendo switch versions of the game but I can't speak on how well those fare this game goes all in on horror more specifically the first person to hide and seek horror that was extremely popular at the time and still kind of is and despite horror games being one of my favorite types to play this type of horror game doesn't do a lot for me most of the time usually after a couple of hours the novelty of whatever stalker monster you're hiding from wears off and the game just becomes a stealth game with very limited gameplay variety and alien isolation for me Falls right into that trap unfortunately I find it more frustrating and boring than scary most of the time still it's impossible to not admire the level of detail creative assembly crammed into every inch of this game while basically every other alien game leans into the themes and Aesthetics of the second movie from 1986 alien isolation is all about that original 1979 movie which while similar also has a very different look and feel about it everything from the Big Star Trek buttons to the doors the walls the CRT screens everywhere it's all absolutely perfect every little piece of Machinery in this world sounds like a vcr and I love it they absolutely knocked it out of the park in terms of presentation honestly I would say the game is worth playing for this alone if you're a big fan of that first movie which I am being able to walk around inside what is essentially a sequel to the original movie is really something special and they should be commended for pulling it off this well the story is also a good idea it's focused on Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda As She searches for her mom during that 50-year stint of her floating around through space between the first two movies and it's a great spot for a story this is about where the compliments end from me though despite this being one of the better Amnesia style horror games that I've played it's still one of those Amnesia style horror games that just get old for me and aren't that scary the gameplay is very redundant the game itself is way too long it feels very patted out and you're just spending far too much time hiding in lockers and cupboards for my taste you do have manual saves though which ratchet up the tension nicely and that feels a little old school too which I do like and you do get a few ways to distract the alien that mix things up a little bit you can even defend yourself temporarily with a flamethrower kinda like the Atari game but for me the high point of the game is the totally disconnected or isolated DLC modes that have you racing around different environments as different characters including Ellen Ripley herself pulling levers and escaping from the alien within the time limit replaying these missions to get better times is actually kind of fun and addicting there's still some frustration here as you have to use trial and error too much for my taste but these more condensed missions are still more fun than the main story in my opinion overall this is an interesting package that I think would really have benefited from a sequel to iron out some of these rough edges there's certainly room in the horror genre for alien it makes a lot of sense had they taken a different approach with more time in between alien encounters and more interesting ways to evade the alien itself I would have really liked it a lot more but the game certainly has its fans and I can see why foreign on the complete opposite end of the spectrum we have the final alien game that I'll be talking about today and what has become one of my favorites aliens fire Team Elite in a nutshell its aliens meets left for dead you squat up Tinker with your loadouts and abilities and take on hordes of aliens while accomplishing various tasks before moving on to the next thing usually tasks are defending a certain point for a while finding thing a and combining it with thing b or just killing a certain amount of zenos before moving on not a bad idea for an aliens game and certainly accomplishes what it sets out to do I didn't play it much when it first came out because I was constantly getting kicked out of lobbies and losing progress and as an online only game which is kind of annoying in and of itself I was a little disappointed at first [Music] and also the paper-thin plot didn't help but after a few months I did pick it back up man the networking issues had mostly been ironed out so then I really got into it and now I have over a hundred hours into the game and a platinum trophy which are two things I rarely ever achieve in any game I can confidently say though that this is one of my favorite alien games ever though not because it's a great alien game per se but actually because it's just a great Co-op shooter the fact that it takes place in the aliens universe is just kind of a bonus I tend to have kind of a soft spot for these sorts of games for whatever reason they just get along with my ADHD brain very well I have more hours logged into games like zombie army 4 World War Z and this than I do just about any other type of game I play so it makes sense why this game got a tucks into me very easily especially once it was fixed up again though as an alien game it's got some problems it misses a lot of opportunities to build any sort of tension or create the sort of compelling characters that the IP is known for there is a story here technically but it's not great and honestly if the developers can't even move the character's mouths when they talk to you then you have no real reason to pay attention to what they're saying order station find Hanukkah and extract them take it from me though you can totally ignore it the action here is where it works though shooting feels great with all the weapons that any alien fan would expect and more you also get a nice little French horn rip every time you get a headshot kill which I haven't seen any reviewers mention but yeah that's awesome you can also do quite a bit of customizing and upgrading as well so you always have another Milestone to work towards which is important because you will be replaying these levels many many times as far as the presentation goes yeah it has the metal industrial grates where they belong it has the steam bursting out of random pipes and it has the giant Stone heads in the Prometheus themed levels and of course it has evil Androids that spray two percent milk everywhere when you shoot them so a lot of the things that you want are there but it still feels like the developers just kind of made a Left for Dead game first and then drenched it in Alien things so they could call it an alien game I got to give some extra points for the music though this is easily the best attempt at replicating the soundtrack James Horner delivered for the second film ever period the music for the Prometheus themed levels aren't as exciting but they still fit the mood pretty well so high marks all around the Sound and Music Department no problems there as you've probably gathered aliens fire Team Elite incorporates more of the movies than anything before it kind of taking the alien Trilogy approach although it mostly leans into the themes from the second movie and Prometheus which is an interesting mix and does give a good amount of variety for the few levels that are here and the DLC campaign is more of an alien Covenant sort of thing which is pretty cool now it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to combine these things into one storyline if you think about it too much but it's fun it kind of feels like it's just celebrating the entire franchise by having everything thrown in at once and it's definitely fun to blast through all of the Thematic concepts of the movies and a few new ones with some pretty good ideas for new weapons and alien type they don't feel like logical extensions of what already exists in that Universe the different campaigns while few in number are super challenging and fun and they all culminate in the obligatory final battle against an absolute shitstorm of aliens which ends with being chased out of a self-destructing facility by a queen which sadly you don't get to actually fight although the DLC campaign does give you a crazy pathogen Queen to battle at the end of that to kind of make up for it there's not as much content here as other similar games like zombie army 4 or World War Z but it's not bad for the price the game generally goes for now I highly recommend it especially if you dig these sorts of games with the only caveat being that you should definitely round up some friends to play with because playing it on your own with the Bots isn't nearly as fun you can't really customize the Bots at all and they're not particularly smart or helpful so while I don't like it quite as much as some of the better single player focused experiences in the series it's still easily in my top three had they taken the time to put in an actual story worth paying attention to and or added another handful of levels like maybe something based on Alien 3 or alien resurrection I think it would have really been top-notch but I'd still say it's a must play for alien fans again especially if you really enjoy Co-op Shooters like I do foreign so that's what I've got for alien games for now overall I think this IP has put out more good games than not and it's pretty underrated overall a lot of the better games are good because they've latched on to already established formulas but hey a good game is a good game and this IP has more of them than it tends to get credit for if there's anything that we can definitely take away from what they've gotten right so far it's that combining elements from across the series and putting them all into one thing can often be a recipe for Success there's also a lot more room for horror games in the alien franchise I would really like to see if not a sequel to isolation then maybe something totally new with a different type of horror something that builds on that combination we got with alien Trilogy seems ideal to me but that's just my take in any case feel free to recommend other alien games that I've missed out on I know there's definitely a few out there and I'll be sure to check them out but until then thanks for watching [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music]
