Ali Wong on Going on Tour with Her Ex-Husband, Shooting Her First Love Scene & New Show Beef

in this case he's a very funny woman with three Netflix comedy specials under her belt and a new show on Netflix called beef I sent this one video to her recently did you see the road rage thing on next door is it now oh my gosh look at this you believe that I just can't understand what those people are so angry about oh well you know I mean most people don't understand that um anger is just a transitory State of Consciousness these premieres April 6th on Netflix please say hello to Ali long [Applause] how are you very good to see you good I know I haven't seen you in years I know it's been a while can I interest you in a gecko for your children uh I don't want another dependent thank you well how old are your kids now they're five and seven they're so cool I've been seven no so ever since they were little they let me cut their hair I cut their I trim their hair every single day they're like my little Bonsai really yes and they have these very cute Asian Amelie haircuts but now my seven-year-old she just started saying I don't want you to cut my hair no why no she just said she was like it's my hair and then I was like okay oh that's heartbreaking you know the five-year-old's gonna copy her and she's not gonna want her hair cut for you either so will she cut her own hair if it's her hair that's just she just wants to let it grow out have you thought about letting her cut your hair as a show of Goodwill just to you know keep it going cut for Cut Navy that's a good idea yeah now your daughters know I was you know you were quite famously pregnant during two of your Netflix comedy specials do they know that they're egg in there at this time yes so they're very proud and conscious so Mari is the one in the Striped dress and then Nikki's the one in the leopard dress okay and they're they know the names of the special mari's like I'm baby cobra Nikki's like I'm hard knock wife and they get really and they call it my special why have they they haven't seen your specials no they've never seen anything I've done it's all too dirty even the animation shows I'm in yeah right like toucan birdie big mouth it's like it's all too dirty the only thing I've ever let them watch that I've been in is uh when I was a judge when I was a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race oh and they watch that they watch that and did they like that they like seeing you on that they loved it so much that show is I think such a great show to watch with your kids because they love like the pageantry they love all the personalities and um the haircuts you're going on tour right uh over the summer and well into the fall right I am I took a huge break from stand up from when I was filming beef and I'm going on the road for the first time in a long time will the girls go with you on the tour yeah they go with me everywhere I heard your ex-husband is also joining you on the tour he is he is he was the tour manager the last time and he's going to be the tour manager again wow yeah we're really close you must be very evolved we are yeah we're like we're really good friends it wasn't just like a you know when I say that like I really mean it well I guess you well you're certainly proving that you mean it well and especially because my new hour is all about my dating life right that's weird yeah and that doesn't bother him at all no we're I mean like I mean it like we're really good friends and we're very what if he's picking up women along the way on the road uh that's fine with me yeah yeah okay sounds like we should think this through before you get on the bus you're uh this show by the way I gotta tell you something first of all it's very dramatic which I know I expected it was going to be I didn't know going in what it was going to be and everything you do is funny so I figured this would be and there are some funny moments but man oh man I saw the first episode and I cannot wait to see the second episode what can you say about the first episode because I don't want to ruin anything well the show is called beef and it's about two strangers that get into a road rage incident and then they become obsessed with each other so like I mean it's really funny because so Stephen Young from The Walking Dead he's great yeah he's great he's uh he's my co-star and it was so funny because when we first uh the project first got announced all my friends were so concerned I'd fall in love with Stephen oh really oh none of his friends were concerned and then there was like this headline that came out that was like Ali Wong continues to work with hot men I was like excuse me don't you mean blessed and highly favored men continue um it was like it was a really great experience and you know originally uh the person opposite of Stephen in the road rage incident was conceived as a white man okay but then uh Sonny the show runner thought it would be much more interesting Sonny is our gekko's name [Laughter] wow I love the stars are aligning here I think it's more interesting having it be a female that he's got this thing going with yeah it's cool and so it was like it is a dramatic role and I think that's why I took such a big break from stand up because my normal practice is to go up and do like five sets a week and when it's first starting in New York I would sometimes go up like 9 to 13 times a night a night yeah and so this was like to do no stand up for 5-6 months was wild and I think it was it was really good in the end it was good for the projects do you felt like if you were going out and being funny every night you would maybe did you did you ever like Play it For Laughs when you weren't supposed to while you're shooting the show no no not really you zeroed right in on the on playing it dramatically I did and it was I mean but there's there's definitely funny elements but I mean people it's a it's a dark comedy but it also is very much like a thriller it is a thriller yeah yeah I am yeah and you have love scene and all that sort of thing yes I have my first in uh oh I have like three intimacy scenes yes I have that one and then I have I have two more and uh uh it was when I the one of them is really really intense and then me and the actor afterwards just uh ate Popeyes Chicken in my trailer is that true yeah [Laughter] so the thing it wasn't a big deal at all then no because there's like there's so many people behind the camera and then when you and then like Popeye's Chicken really takes it all it really brings you back to Earth yeah that's what they say yeah well congratulations on the show I can't wait to see more of it the show is called beef it premieres April 6th on Netflix Ali Wong everybody thanks [Applause]
