this is sweating suede suede sweat in the morning in the morning in the morning shake weight your [ __ ] sway morning shameful five I'm on a new level I'm on a new level I finish up in the room I just wanted to play like a height song and see how our next guest will react yeah because quietly man I don't I don't really think the world really properly acknowledged how great of a dancer this guy has been since she was a child during the tap dance kid or remember heaven I told the truth he told the truth God was the one key you were in another key I know I know I know I went to the original key I put it on blast by the way I appreciate that they're the suitors our icon is we've grown up and we watched him grow up which is always interesting because I'm sure you ask people who come up to him all the time to look older than him that says uh I watched you growing up as a kid we watch them on The Fresh Prince of bel-air we watched him a Dancing with the Stars we watched him do up so many different type of work so much different type of work in the business of film and TV yeah um and he still looks the damn saying help me remember the Pepsi commercial he did with the Michael Jackson pepper people said he oh this is the long intro that was the long intro it was a long rachelandted theory sentimental yeah right although I was waiting for word to drop it didn't never drive never drop there and now amongst many things that he does he's the host of America's Funniest Videos and he's here with us today the one and only Alfonzo right there alright thank you you know I I'm one of those people that as a kid cuz we're the same age bracket as a kid right bracket bracket yes up as a kid um truly inspired by you thank you man truly inspired by you because one of the things about you you you're funny as an actor your comedic timing is impeccable um you as a dancer is ridiculous you know as a host you're entertaining here's the interesting thing that yeah people think of me as a dancer but you know and I'm not you're not I'm not because I never took lessons right the only lessons I ever took was to do the tap dance kid okay so they taught me how to tap dance to do tap dance kid but everything else has been what I like to call just mimicking other people like show it to me and I can do it yeah by mimicking it right so like the issue for me always was like like Michael Jackson right like people were like oh man you know the Pepsi kid and all the rest well I do all my Michael Jackson moves backwards what do you mean because I use the TV as my mirror oh so Michaels doing them in one direction yeah and I'm doing them what looks like the mirror which actually makes it the opposite way so like even when I did the Pepsi commercial and I got on set with Michael Peters who was Michael Jackson's choreographer and back in a day Letson right the amazing Michael Peters um he was like right so here you go do this move here and I went well not over here he's like no no need would you know this way I was like oh that's the opposite leg yeah because I was used to doing it the other way because of TV and that's the way I've done basically everything in dance like I I'm mimicking and so what was what was interesting was when we were doing Dancing with the Stars I said to Whitney all the time I would say listen don't tell me about the moves just show it to me uh-huh like don't move my body just show me what the end result is supposed to look like I can get there cuz I cuz that's how my brain or your brain works so I let you know part of like to me like the biggest thing on Dancing with the Stars the real the real difference between me and everybody else was I already knew how I learned mm-hmm so I didn't have to teach I didn't have to learn how to learn I had to just teach Whitney how I learned so she then you know changed her style yeah - basically accommodate me with my learning yeah so I was just like look just stand in front of me mm-hmm and do the moves and then I was like okay and you got it and then I would get the basics of the move and then from there she would work the technique and get me to you know do it the proper way but ultimately I would just mimic right you reverse engineer damn man so that's a way I got the whole time oh he was on time howdy was it not so let me ask you it when it when it come because our Fresh Prince of bel-air um I remember hearing stories how we'll used to memorize everybody's part so honest oh right right right what was your method of memorizing what is your method of memorize the exact same thing I have a photographic memory so I would back then uh hey use in a while so as a little rusty yeah but um but I would basically like if I was acting with you right I would be talking to you looking at you mm-hmm well there'd be a hologram of the script in your between me and you and I would basically be reading the lines as I was talking to will so I'd have the lines in front of me and then I would like to turn the Paige yeah indeed you see today's blue go change its people like what page is that on I'd be like page 12 they're like how do you know that I was like that is right there in the corner right there I see right yes well I don't spell that's the words on the page I basically took like a snapshot of each page and that's how I remembered all my lines on the script I would just simply read them I'm tearing up right now because I don't relate today I might even told you this a lot that's doing news from TV for so many years and when we used to do a lot of news real hard news right I still have to memorize a lot of script I would write it look at it and then go live right you know I didn't trust teleprompter right so that's how I could then I learned have the ability to go like this and then I can regurgitate whatever it was that I read that same thing nothing you got it but to think about that practice it you got it you got to exercise that in practice absolutely you have to you it's a muscle right is it that's why I said you know it's been a while so it's a little rusty you know but but but still even today like for me to remember someone's name uh-huh I got to write it down and then I got to read it and now I remember it Wow so like people tell me the name all the time they're like yo my name is and I'll be like yeah two seconds later be like damn what's a name you can't get it right just it won't stick yeah I have to read it wow man damn afonso man is it great that's but that to me is like that's the that's the key to a lot of things in life yeah right it's not about hey I need to learn how to do this no you need to learn how you learn mm-hmm and then you can simplify how to learn something once you understand the way your brain works because people keep like you know you go to school and you've got basically your teacher saying you got to study well who teaches you how to study hey right like that's like I always thought that was an interesting concept you know being a kid in school to be like you got to go home and study I was like well what do you do well really how do you do that like bad noise what's your study about ten minutes to our comeback you know what what is it yeah what's your way you so as a parent are you do you notice different things in your children you have to deal with each of them differently absolutely each each child is different now of course my little little ones are they're just you know babies but like even my daughter you know she is repetition right he does use she's got to do it over and over again and then she gets it like you right yes yeah but but but but but she isn't the photographic memory right so she has to actually just like if she says it over and over and over again then it sticks right so that's that's her key to learning learning right so it's just repetition for me it's like it wasn't repetition yeah you know I'd say rody I guess a hundred times but if I don't have what I like to call connecting the dots then work right so if there's a name that I can't remember I go okay who is someone with a name close to that gotcha Richard Burton got it his name is Richard right so then I just see that person and I see Richard Burton right or if they look like a certain person that I know then I give them that name the connected I just I have to connect those dots how does you memorize my name swagman out it it's right behind you okay it's right there right there right there yes I did photographing I saw it I saw it I saw your face and you got asked the name to it got it all right when it comes to relationships like if you got to remember all of the likes of your lady you'd well you better choose right you better not screw up you you you you learn it by making connections and it's made you know like you know okay she doesn't like she doesn't like strawberries got it got it don't like strawberries she likes you know she likes red roses isn't like these roses okay cool go got it you know I just that's you just you just try to you write it down somewhere somewhere write it down somewhere you make it a visual and then you don't have to worry about it ever again man Afonso Ribeiro is here ladies and gentlemen all right well we're going to talk about America's Funniest Home Videos up next and everything else he has going on and open up these phone lines and eight at eight seven four two three three four five he has a super fed in the room that he doesn't know about but we're gonna reveal momentarily shape for five swaying them let's take them back thought we play something you might enjoy a phone oh I don't know I'm gonna go with E I don't know little Tom John Dawson how FAR's on the barrel is here with us ladies and gentlemen Shawn ain't never lost his virginity Potomac yeah no right was all fake carlton ever yeah well yeah he did have sex huh did he I don't well I don't you got how many kids you got well that was car you gotta follow your father different story because being in an entertainment usually people start off Earl you having sex man putting that out here right now no well oh I'm not going there breath cuz the key you a man why you askin another man when he was just saying yeah man I mean I'm we we I was on silver spoons how about that with Ricky Schroder yes oh you throw something out there as big as that either oh [ __ ] yeah yeah you know why cuz I'm always thinking here was my thought process after The Fresh Prince of bel-air I always thought they try to make ll like the new Will Smith right because you did that not not that ll needed to be Will Smith but did like boost his television career because I remember you doing it in the house with him in the house yes right it's like wow is that gonna work for ll you know how is that gonna happen and and you know I watch it and then of course L went to go do big movies and with more television but I completely for some reason forgot about silver spoon and all of them do you think cause anyway to do that whatever I love arrow we would DP and I would talk this DB by the way we would talk layout I don't you do a great job as a host tool you know like you you you do you have to adjust like how do you adjust to each cuz it's different from acting yeah you know it's but it but it all is the same in a different way like the only difference between hosting and acting is ultimately you're playing a character yeah so when you're acting you're playing that character you're thinking like the character you're you know your lines are kind of laid out for you as a host your lines are also laid out for you yeah the difference is is that you're being you right or a version of you and I always say that there is the on-camera Alfonzo and then there's a dude who sits on the couch with his wife and the kids the family over his homies and and that's a different dude right and so that character has now been understood by me yeah right so I know what my on-camera personality is it's 99% me but it's what I like to call the best versions of me the best yeah right without your flaws right right getting them and we all um but but that but I've learned how to become that guy on camera and you know ultimately it's just about being comfortable right and I tell this story when I when I when we do America's Funniest Home Videos and we actually do it in front the audience I tell this story every once in a while and I feel like it's a great story to to help understand you know what we do right but when I was 12 I did I was doing tap dance kid and I was asked to do the national anthem at Yankee Stadium right and I'm like okay I was dating Ronda Ross Diana Ross's daughter Yeah right and I'm like you know second national anthem like come with me you know you know I'm not to go do my thing and she came and she's up in the box and you know it was all cool right and and we got there a little late so they were like oh by the way there's a delay at Yankee Stadium right so when you sing they did you don't hear it right away it comes back so we're gonna give you these earplugs but because you're late you can't practice it so good luck right so I go down onto the field right and it's like ladies and gentlemen to sing the national anthem Alfonso Ribeiro and I go okay oh say can you see Jose and I hear and and it hits me right and I'm and I then hear myself freaks me out right I hit the pause button and couldn't move forward right and I went okay all right get you up what do we do what we do what we do I'm saying this to myself and I go all right the next line the next line um um and the rock is wet so I just skipped to and the Rockets red glare right and now I say I do and the Rockets red glare and then I hear myself and then I sing the next line and then I hear myself so it sounds like and the Rockets red glare the bombs bursting in air they're gay so all the way through to the end of the song right I'm devastated okay just like oh my god I am going to get just destroyed at school tomorrow right so I go I get I go into the dugout right and and Dave Winfield was like my favorite player right and so he goes kid kid come here come here come here come here and I sit down I'm crying my eyes out he says to me goes listen you stayed out there you made it through to the end it didn't go great but but you finished it and you should be proud of yourself for handling it and and finishing it right so I'm devastated I go home and I you know I'm go to school the next day I get tortured at school right and you know of course Rhonda's mom is dying to Ross she never done that right here like sucker you know it was horrible right and then as I got older I used that as a as a as a baseline for me right and people ask me all the time like why don't you get nervous and I'm like I've already experienced the worst thing that could ever happen to me in show business yeah hmm it will never be as bad as that moment when I pause in front of 40,000 people right in my home state with my favorite team everything else is easy and look at them now ladies and gents is easy yeah like that I don't ever have any issues and so then now being myself is easy I just go do I just go and just be relaxed and comfortable and just do because there is no wrong yeah it'll never be as bad as that so even when I do something stupid I'm like that was stupid yeah and that's it it wasn't lanky Stadium so everything's a positive and that's how I kind of am able to go into every circumstance and you know I'm just gonna be me I'm gonna do what I do and it'll it'll turn out however it turns out but if you you know if you go in you know worried about it you can't be yourself can't be yourself does it work like that - Alfonso and like say maybe a competitive situation on one set because a lot of times actors can be very competitive and try to steal the scene do you bring that mentality with you even in situations like that well I know how to scene how to steal scenes right like I I already know how to do it so I also know how to block someone else from doing it so you know I go get my secrets but I but so I'm never worried about it because I'm like okay I got what you're doing mm-hmm and then I reverse it but what are the difference between stealing a scene and just performing your best because if the lines are already there like it's a person doing that so extra it's about it's about timing right scenes or scenes have like it's there's music two words right and that's kind of what we were talking about a little bit earlier right there's a rhythm rhythm to it right there's a rhythm to how it works and so somebody could take it just a little extra pause before a punch line to become a scene stealer right so then you have to play off that pause so when somebody pauses on you long the way you defend that is you do something during their pause okay a look or a you know move or something that makes the the concentration because if you let's say it's in a two-shot right and you're both standing there together and that person takes the pause and then you do something their eyes went to you they lost the moment you're screwed you can watch you diabolical upon visit people that is a dwight howard take it to the streets y'all wanna hang out i want to do press with you today babe I'm hanging out I told you you had a superfan in here man oh cool if you look around the room what you think it is she right here yeah dad you have to be right here it is no no stop it did not say she was she forgotten it she forgotten about silver spoon Yeah right BB Alphonso it's actually me I'm the superfan I just want to ask real quick um Will Smith kind of ascended into his movie stardom right while he was on Fresh Prince I was just wondering did he ever ask you to be a part of any of the films that he was doing you know like well no look just like your hat says ah no damn but no love no love lost where that like like one of the things that I think we as a whole right like what we do wrong as a whole as a culture um is we expect somebody to do something for us that they don't actually have a right to do or a responsibility to do it right like he has his family he has his kids he has his wife he has his parents right like why should he do something specifically to support me unless it supports him right his thing leaving The Fresh Prince of bel-air was to make a separation from the show the last thing he could have done was take someone from The Fresh Prince and bring it to his movies because then it becomes The Fresh Prince the movie right so he had to separate himself from us I understand that if you're a businessman you get how business works right but we all go Joe he's supposed to take care of me no he's not you supposed to take care of you take care of your own business and don't worry about asking somebody else to take care of you so when people look at you know Will Smith not doing anything for the cast of Fresh Prince I say well why should he have like what was his responsibility his responsibility was to the best Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of bel-air that's what his responsibility with and the moment the show ended thank you dude you gave us an opportunity you're your star your light gave us all an ability to perform out with our lights thank you for being that light right so why are we expecting anything more than that right because we don't want to go out and do the hard work hey go out and do the work you know take responsibility for yourself your own career your own stuff I don't need Will Smith to do that for me if he did it cool right and Will Smith has helped me in many ways beyond what we have seen on camera Yeah right and and and most of that like I always say I'm never going to talk about what Will Smith has done for me because that's not the world business right but he has supported me in ways beyond anybody can understand but it doesn't have to be publicly right it doesn't have to be out there it's about your boy it's about your boy just be in there like sometimes when you're down having someone to call and talk to is more important than him saying hey man I'll give you a role in my film what is that going to do as it means nothing but really means something is being that friend being that person being that individual that you can call on and talk to and get advice from and and but Will Smith is a brilliant human being yeah and you know some of the advice that he's given me in my life I've been able to to create my own light again and that to me is way more valuable than any role he could have ever given me right and and I think that we just have to we have to take responsibility for our own things our own our own responsibility for our own career and our own lives and our own livelihood um we can't expect someone to hand it down to you that's what I'm in a rental come come on for you forever oh this way you know after that eloquent speech and it was so inspiring I was wondering who would be too much for me to ask you to do something for me I mean it's it's because I am amber fan we we let's see where we go okay are you really ready let's see where this rises ah I know where you going with this the challenge in Vegas they ran out of money to get home yeah you gotta see how DB DB DB first of all that's super fair right there that's a good best-loved wasn't she dressed up like who is this ooh that's the Kemosabe uh you know Tonto Apaches yeah
