today I'm going to show you some tips and tricks on air brake valves here's the old one I've undid the four bolts already to show you quickly but you remove the lid and if you're replacing a new one on a truck you can rotate the lid to face any which way that you need the valve to work and then rebuilt it down but what I normally do I'm going to show you here once you remove the lid there's a piston in there you can see how gross this one is but normally what happens is they get gunked up and then they Jam so they start leaking but what you can do is take it apart clean it up with brake cleaner whatever you want to do replace the o-ring that is around the side you can see it once you replace that that will stop the leak and make sure you put the spring back in because this is what opens it crack pressure and every valve even though it looks the same can be different with a different spring in here means it'll open at a different psi so if that's a heavier spring instead of the crack pressure of it opening at 10 psi it might be 50 psi so that's another thing to watch is just read your tags to make sure you got the proper valve and the proper crack pressure to open it or your brakes will open at different times so another thing that I do is when I take a new one I will take the lid off of it and then I will put like a lithium grease around the o-ring or a white grease it just makes them last a little longer and keeps them in service a lot longer because downtime is expensive another tip that you can do to make change in the valve a little quicker and easier as you can see here I've marked it with a black mark and the reason I've done that is when I take this fit in out of the old one to know where it goes on the new one that black mark once I take it out of the old one I can turn it in and tighten it and they'll be in the exact same position so when I put it on the truck the line I've disconnected will go right back on in the same spot another thing to remember is always use like a teflon tape or you can use basically like a thread sealant which is a teflon sealant but it's liquefied which makes it a little quicker another tip is when you put your teflon tape on put it on like a nut righty-tighty because that way when you thread it in it doesn't unravel the tape it stays on and tightens in the proper position those are just some quick tips on relay valves that might help you down the road on your air brakes thank you
