came into the world to save sinners among whom i am foremost of all yet for this reason i found mercy so that in me as the foremost jesus christ might demonstrate his perfect patience as an example cry we share together heartaches and size sometimes we dream together of how it will be when we all get to hell [Music] please be seated who loves is born of god and knows god the one who does not love does not know god or god is love first john 4 7 and 8. does your love show that you know god and that you're born of him as you think about this type of agape love it's spoken of a love that entails personal sacrifice a love that is not run by emotion a love that can thrive even in the midst of hostile circumstances that's the type of agape love we're speaking of today and thinking along those lines as we continue down this trek of unveiling who god really is the god of agape love also know that worldly centers can agape but they have a limit and their limit is based upon how they're treated and that's where that love fails then even taking a step beyond to think about even just the first few verses of first corinthians chapter 13 that without agape love we are nothing before god without agape love there is nothing profitable that we do before god without agape love we are spiritually bankrupt people before god do we know god we consider in how we love to love like those who know god and who are born of god as we look today at agape is patient this godly love has a patience about it there's more than one greek word in the new testament for patience so don't think that every time you read the word patient in the new testament it's speaking of this type of patience but this type of patience is long tempered we're very familiar with people who are short tempered but god has called us to be a long-tempered people long-suffering even in the midst of hostility even in the midst of difficulty paul told the saints in colossae he says put on a heart of patience in other words it's not natural for us it will require effort it will require a mindset being spiritual it will not be normal so don't seek for it to be you'll have to put it on sometimes there are spiritual muscles that are weak and they simply need to be strengthened in christ if you will open up to first timothy chapter one we're going to start in verse 12. paul rights to timothy but i want you to listen to these words i thank christ jesus our lord who has strengthened me because he considered me faithful putting me into service you notice where paul drew his strength off of he says it's not in and of me he says whenever i submit to the lord he says i find strength i'm not doing it my way anymore i'm not looking at what i'm limited in i look to him he says and he considered me faithful i responded to him out of out of faith ongoing he says and he even put me into service even though i was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor he says even though if you look at my past you would never expect that he says i'm a blasphemer he says that's what i come out of i blaspheme god he says i was a persecutor of god's people even violent at it to consider how do you respond to people who rob you of value who hate you and even become violent against you what else look at the end of verse 13. he says yet i was shown mercy because i acted ignorantly in unbelief how do you respond to ignorant people do you respond with mercy typically not a lot of times we find someone who we think of as ignorant we just assume i don't have to love them verse 14 and the grace of our lord was moved was more than abundant with the faith and love which are found in christ jesus he says the grace of our lord was more than abundant grace is about already having an abundance it's more than what's needed it's even offered beyond and above he says the grace that god offered me was more than abundant think of trying to fill an eight ounce glass pouring out a five-gallon container yeah it's more than abundant he says god poured his grace out upon me in rich abundance then if you notice he says with the faith and love which are found in christ jesus notice grace is always attached with faith it requires a response to god even in the midst of meeting people who are hostile will you still work off of patience will you be long tempered because god certainly was with saul who later became paul verse 15. it is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance that christ jesus came into the world to save sinners among whom i am foremost of all this is not paul's attempt at humility this is not paul saying in a humble brag you know i'm really the worst one you've ever found remember all scripture is god breathe inspired of god when paul writes this down this is just as inspired as the rest of the book he says it's a trustworthy statement deserving your full acceptance he says you're not going to find anybody who is worse than me i take that in for a moment for anyone who thinks they've done too much in their life to be forgiven he says here i am he says listen to this and keep in mind he's only really speaking to timothy but the application is for all he says trust it and if you notice the end he says christ jesus came to the world to save sinners he says among whom i am foremost of all chief i outrank them in how terrible i was how utterly wicked and sinful i was a blasphemer a persecutor a violent aggressor ignorant he says you won't find someone worse than me and religious on top of all of it verse 16 paul thought about why would god forgive me because notice verse 16 yet for this reason i found mercy so that in me as the foremost jesus christ might demonstrate his perfect patience as an example for those who believe in him for eternal life i know why god forgave me he knows it's because of the blood of jesus he says it was to show to everyone else you can be forgiven because the love of god is patient you talk about long tempered jesus endured with saul putting to death jesus's own brothers and sisters spiritually speaking in the kingdom jesus continued to be patient and long tempered with a man who was ignorant in his religious beliefs a man who had a great zeal but no knowledge according to god blasphemer persecutor violent aggressor long-tempered patience is that where we hold our standard for patience or when someone becomes violent we say i don't have to be patient with them anymore someone becomes blasphemous rob of value he says would you still show them patience and if you notice what's written here in verse 16 he says this is the reason i found mercy so that it to me is the foremost jesus christ might demonstrate he might show he might prove the perfect patience the idea here is he is showing here's the far-reaching capabilities here's the total extension of patience and that's paul says that's what god showed me there's the love of god jesus came to save sinners and here's the full extension of patience long tempered that paul would be forgiven notice as he continues he says as an example when he uses this word example he says so that you would be able to delineate the pattern so that you would be able to see this and grasp it at its fullest lengths he says example for those who would be would believe in him for eternal life for us for anyone else who thinks they've gone too far beyond what god would be willing to forgive because that's a lie the lie a lot of people tell themselves because there's no faith in the working of jesus notice what it brought about within paul being forgiven verse 17 now to the king eternal immortal invisible the only god be honor and glory forever and ever being the recipient of this kind of patience it spurs paul on to worship glory and honor be to him he says you recognize jesus the king to bow the knee to him to see here's jesus who's immortal he's going to be without end to see that he's invisible you don't always see what god's doing he says because of his patience he should draw out within us as well as it did within paul glory and honor to god through jesus let's look at another parable that jesus told look back at matthew chapter 18. page 978 matthew chapter 18. in verses 21 and 22 peter comes up to jesus and says how long should i how often should i forgive my brother is it up to seven times should i really extend myself should that be the far reaching limits of forgiveness with my brother and jesus says 70 times seven and he's not saying keep track of them 491 okay you can be unforgiving the idea is limitless to keep on going stretch out even further then verse 23 he says for this reason the kingdom of heaven would be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves here's the king it's time to settle up accounts it says it's the kingdom of heaven is what's being compared to here with this king verse 24 and 25 when he had begun to settle them one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him but since he did not have the means to repay his lord commanded him to be sold along with his wife and children and all that he had repayment to be made settle accounts ten thousand talents sometimes we look back at these these monetary things and in the first century and we go what does that really mean well to give you kind of a general idea one talent was equivalent to roughly 75 pounds of gold now we typically count gold in terms of ounces one talent 75 pounds roughly of gold it was also the equivalent of you would have to work for 15 years to make the wages of one talent fifteen years for one and here's a man who owed ten thousand talents if you do the math it would take him a hundred and fifty thousand years to pay the debt probably not all of us in this room are going to live to be a hundred if you could live to 100 you'd have to do it 1500 times what's he telling you about this debt it's greater than anything you've ever seen now listen would it take patience notice how it continues he says seller that he has wife children until payment be made verse 26. so the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before saying have patience with me and i will repay you everything have patience how long of a patience is he asking for would you be patient with me for 150 000 years what are you seeing about long tempered this is our word for patience but this man doesn't deal in terms of reality he says and i will repay you there's no way it's laughable notice it it says the slave it's universe so the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself this word for prostrated literally is about worship it's a worship word little means to blow a kiss toward he says he came and fell down before the king out of worship begging for patience he says and i'll pay you back notice how he continues what's the king going to offer verse 27 and the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt is that patience compassion released him and forgave him the love of god the patience of god to imitate it means it has to come at self-sacrifice would you give up the equivalent of 23 billion dollars would you make that kind of sacrifice now the saints in corinth they were taking each other to court you think any of the totals were that big love is patient well i've suffered a lot love is patient but i have only a lot love is patient long tempered sacrifice of self here he comes through and he forgave him the debt verse 28 actually verses 28 and 29 remember that first slave was thinking have patience with me and i'll pay you back where is he going to get all the money verse 28 29. but the slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii and he seized him and began to choke him saying pay back what you owe so his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him saying have patience with me and i will repay you but in their eyes a day's wage you're dealing with 100 days wages you are an equivalent you can do your own math he takes them and he begins to choke him literally put his hands that sound violent to you to be choked and when he lets go of him he falls to the ground and with the breath that he has he says these words have patience with me and i will repay you everything would you be patient with me for a hundred days look at what's being asked patients for 150 000 years is what had been granted the equivalent money-wise patients for 100 days sometimes we have difficulty being patient for an hour or maybe even less than that remember it's not natural we'll have to put it on by the power of the spirit of god here he is pay back what you owe chokes him i got to make this money back i'm going to start with yours also grant have patience with me and notice what happens what's this first slave being motivated by controlled by emotion controlled in terms of the king forgave the debt it's already over it's already ended he didn't trust him even though he worshipped him he prostrated himself down before him at his feet it didn't make a move here's the response of the one who had received forgiveness compassion and patience but he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed pay it back which one of these two represents us it's the first slave the debt we owed is not small and can be paid off in 100 days we're the first slave the question is how will we respond will we be those who are patient or will we be those who are impatient notice how it continues here verse 31 so when his fellow slaves saw what had happened they were deeply grieved and came and reported the lord all that had happened have you ever prayed for someone because they were unforgiving to pray that their heart would be broken whenever you come to recognize their unforgiveness then verse 32 then summoning him as lord said to him you wicked slave i forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me should you not have also had mercy on your fellow slave in the same way that i had mercy on you he says you pleaded with me and i forgave you why didn't you forgive them you wicked slave not born of god does not know god in other words this first slave was spiritually bankrupt i am nothing nothing i give has any spiritual profit to it that's what unforgiveness is like when god's people are impatient where they won't be forgiving maybe 100 days sounds like a long time it shouldn't it shouldn't then notice how he continues here verse 34 and his lord moved with anger i thought we were talking about god's long tempered what takes the patience of god over to anger because it's not never angry it's long tempered there is a point at which you get the anger of god and the things that have been brought out in these verses unforgiving and impatient not willing to show grace to others and mercy to what's been shown to us he says and his lord moved with anger handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him and him over to the torturers maybe you think in terms of tortures but this literally is about guards whose job it was to get information we would probably use the term interrogators specifically the mindset of to interrogate to get information out of people now in the sense of this parable that jesus tells what information would these torturers want to get from this slave what would make sense to you why are you impatient why are you unforgiving how is he going to answer that question being tortured by it sure enough when god's people are unloving don't be surprised if we get tortured with questions because we're not willing to be honest why are we unforgiving why are we impatient it's not because we know god and we love god not because we're born of him yet to realize these spiritual muscles must be strengthened to be a patient people because god has already shown us so much patience how long was god patient with you before you came to christ how much did he have to endure with us before we came to bow the need of the king and to submit ourselves holy to him should we not offer the same to others he finishes here in verse 35 my heavenly father will also do the same to you if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart he says this is what's going to happen this is the torment why why so impatient why do we get so caught up is it emotions that run us shouldn't be can we operate in the midst of hostility we should be able to but yet we all start weak but we need to rely upon the strength of the spirit of god so that those muscles can grow stronger with every passing day the patience of god is so far beyond our comprehension we can't comprehend 150 000 years we can barely comprehend some 10 20 50 80 100 but to realize this is the love of god are you born of god do you know god this is going to be a great series of lessons because we're going to unveil who god really is and it's going to make us look in the mirror and we need to look hard may the lord bless us as we strive to live as those who know god and are born of god if there's anyone here this morning if we can be of any aid will you come while we stand and see i was sinking deep in sand far from the peaceful shore very deeply stained within sinking to rocks no more but the master of the sea her my despairing cry [Music] to die it is finished was his cry hallelujah [Music] when he comes our glorious king all his ransom wants to bring in a new this song we'll sing hallelujah [Music] we come to a part of our service that we gather together around the lord's supper today as we remember i'd like to remember the sacrifice that jesus went through for us and go and just see what a sacrifice is the sacrifice is an offering up of something precious to god and all throughout history god demonstrated that his people gave their best in their sacrifices that was things without blemish their best in ancient times the patriarchs and israelites sacrificed gift offerings thank offerings peace offerings guilt offerings and sin offerings to god sometimes they offer oil wine grain and other times they offered animals they offered animal sacrifices when they made a covenant with god or when they pleaded for god's help at a time of battle and when they realized that they had sin the law prescribed exactly what god expected from them and he accepted and what he rejected to be pleasing israel offered only what god prescribed the law of moses prescribed the offerings of blood of animals for sin the one who offered the animal would confess his sins on the day of atonement the high priest would lay hands both hands on the scapegoat and confess the sins of the people this was a means of transferring the guilt of these sins upon upon the sacrifice we today are under a new covenant ratified by the blood of jesus christ who is the sacrifice for our sins he paid an awful and painful price for our sins and today we want to look at that sacrifice as we partake of these emblems we all bow with me in prayer our god in heaven how great is your love for us we were full of blemishes we were wayward people but you loved us so much that you sent a perfect without blemish that he could take away the blemishes of us father we are grateful that you blessed us with a heart where we would accept jesus as our savior father as we partake of this bread this morning we remember the body that he sacrificed on that cross to pay for our iniquities be with us father as we partake of this emblem we pray through christ's name we all bow with minion our father in heaven as we protect this fruit of the vine it reminds us of the blood that was shed on calvary's cross this is the blood that sealed the covenant that we have with you father we're grateful for the love that you had for us you loved us so much that you sent jesus to bear the sins of us we're thankful for this blood that seals that covenant of grace that we have with you and makes us your children father be with us as we partake of this through the vine this morning we pray through christ's name amen thank you gerald thank you carrie i think humble ourselves just now thankful for the peace that we have father of knowing that you are in total control of everything that happens in this life help us do not worry or be concerned about what's going on in the world is to trust and know that you have everything under control your control as we close out this time of worship to you father we pray that our worship time has been pleasing to you father and that our worship to you has been from our hearts and our songs have been pleasing to you and the privilege that it has been to be here gathered with your saints father we look forward to that time when we can be with you in heaven only you know when that will be we're grateful god for everything that you do for us have done and will do that we don't even know about the way you take care of us supply our every need every day and father as we depart from this place help us to go into the world and walk worthy of our calling and let our lives be a light to the world that is so lost
