Okay today begins the actual work of making the suit of armor specifically we're going to be making Arthur's armor from Excalibur and as Terry explained he is going to be making a bespoke suit for me it just happens to be out of metal and the first step is to measure me and Build the patterns for the dozens and dozens of pieces that will create my metal shell. Let's get to measuring Okay, how does this whole process begin? Okay, so we've gone through the design aspect mhmmm Then what we're going to do is start making the patterns up. Okay, I'll be transferred to the best. What what do you think? I don't beat up and it's not like there's a set of patterns that just Say Excalibur that you just follow you you have this all in your head. Yeah, pretty much Okay, how do we get it out of your head? That's the first thing that it is just slice off a sheet of paper So I'm gonna do the measurements in Harvard, so I'm gonna draw out half. Oh this guy's your breastplate Ah, I see but I'll know when I cut it in half that's gonna I'm gonna fold it out. It's gonna read it Perfect. Got it. But basically that makes total sense. So you'd measure everything twice right, so it begins with usually a plate measurement from the Roughing where the collarbone is. Uh-huh dams. Are your waist? And it usually are certainly every time the show absolutely enormous They nearly always is 18 inches. Really? Yeah Fascinating that's why I went. Oh, there's some measurements from you. Do they weren't quite right? No I'm not gonna take in my own measure your idea is just to explain that there on the back Which should be slightly longer? To there your waist. Where is in this case 20 inches you had 25 I don't know what I was thinking though your waist according to you What was I thinking? Maybe I was holding the tape measure of the wrong way possibly it helps so we take it roughly from the collarbones cameras the line of a t-shirt and That's really so the neck clearance or when you bend forward you'd never get your I'm not gonna cut into it. Oh, okay She would say that's the waist. So I mark that off on the lady's neck So that gives me the depth of the best place, okay Well, then take the chest measuring And it's gonna come roughly halfway through there She's 21 inches which is ten and a half No, I'll just judge that through Experience I suppose don't know that's off your chest measurement. It's gonna be through this Okay, I'll take your waist measurement so we know the waist is gonna be Nine and you're just judging its placement roughly by eye and knowledge yet and always add a bit because you can always trim that off right right had it to always add a little bilham to Another measurement all do is from the shoulder Again to the waist. Okay. She's 23 So if I take that from the waist up through to the shoulder I know that's roughly gonna be the links through there. And again, this is a Really beautiful experience Learning the hard way. It was a number of patterns. I can't yeah translate. It's a mess We'll cut it out and then beat it up and it was totally wrong There's more software to the trash bin. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah I'm sure that you've done this I have this I have buckets are the wrong the Mistakes. Mmm. I roughly the line before you vote consider is if you're like much so my father is a Tyler Soylent Patton making nice stuff, but when you're making stuffing material and you was making it just a waste code isn't one to Make that smaller You put Gusterson and you sewed them up in it. And that's what materials right you can't do that with metal You can tell you have to judge the stretching and the shrinking and that's where the knowledge comes from I can't explain how I do that. But I know that the line of the breastplate for instance is going to be like you Yeah Cuz I know in that's big enough that's gonna close up to a good news. Oh wow Under the liner that's going to be there Always had a bit and then their line through that one kind of slide adieu. And again, I'd I'll go to finish up Yeah So, I know that fluffy Wow the line and we know that one's the blasian that's that sorry coming down to do You're gonna Kamini next the game because it's gonna be beating who's this lion here? Yeah He's actually once just beat it off. You're gonna be there. Oh, it's gonna be great because you're stretching it Yeah, and I can't put a gaussians like that. So go to Judge rule and it's just Network. I'm fine now Just find a bigger again And even there you were changing some of the dimensions that you've drawn once I've seen some of the other or does Yeah, I can see when things are wrong as soon as I see it I'm not it needs more and all of that is based on Doing it the hard way. Yeah, just experience in it's learning by your mistakes. Yeah. Yeah what you learn? Yes exactly how I learned? That's going to be the first point Italy and so this is then the pattern that you've cut out of a piece of metal Yep. I've been out registered to cut out my minion in this case or still seven Thousand but with the king after suit, they gets a bit more complicated because This what they call the placket, so it's made in two halves. It's that second sheet here at gothic armor Yeah And am I right that placard was because of the advent of guns like it was an extra layer to stop to help stop bullets Not really, there's more to do with flexibility. No interesting here They did actually move. Ah, I vote always making the moves to be honest. It's not really necessary yeah, but again that was more to do with fashion rather than Functional design so armor went through phases of fashion. Just like if you look along Gothic is very wasted. He's very old Nate Very fancy, you know, very flute. Here's lots of stuff beautiful stuff going on It was fashion and the same as the feet of a gothic armor you notice that They've got very long pointed toes And if you look at their shoes, they were the same we were very long In fact, they used to tire the toe up the piece of string to the knee to keep the toe up when they were walking when they really yeah when they were in Banquets or leisure or whatever they're them down Doing a fashion thing. It seems it Elizabethan breastplate, you know, if you look at Gothic until figures old gothic very wasted At the plaque ain't And sometimes I put two or three plates on. Oh and these are often children Engraved so they became very fancy a very fancy finger will put on there then they fought with these flutings in it It ever seen salons either be fluted so it's all very much a fashion thing and very wasted the testers and that came off very Pointed and that was kind of a gothic press play Mafia so what is more complicated about that King Arthur about the King Arthur breastplate? It has a placard So how does that change the press we might into halves you have to then judge. Ah You have to make a second pattern no, welcome to it from the sign one. But this just again judgment Version seven that one gothic if you took a Miss a besom breast play the whole piece code Elizabethan was again And the side view that that would be that right and then the skirt coming off the side view of that would be oh Wow yeah, so That was the fashion. That was the the doublets were made like that. Oh great that follows the great Yeah And they were fairly wasted but the hips came right out on on on many of them Because they wore pantaloons underneath Wow those accommodated pantaloons. So it's all about fashion. Really? No. No the placket I Know it comes to about there Then this will come a bit wider that will then come And that's what you look like so these would be two So I see this is the second layer. Yeah. Yeah, then I know that to accommodate that I can't just cut that on that out and then put them together because I'm gonna shrink So then after accommodating thing right I had to the one that's underneath. What is the shape of that? And I know they're that kind of roughly Does that and it will ever move it there. Oh, okay. So the top piece right? I get your so this one is Kayal So there and this one is cutting out Yeah, and Then when they both be enough and they go together the overlap Sears died line. I'll cut along the dotted lines. Oh wow So you can transfer those Yeah When you Set it down. Oh look at that right you yeah You know that when I bought this out home walk it out here the dams a he would get all red line through And now he'll give you a line to follow that way you get into it. Then you're making it look quite simple Terry, but I don't think it's as simple as Making it look it's easy when you know He's been 55 years doing something. You know, it's been time to got good at it something I tell ya Alright, so the next stage. This is now ready to be transferred to metal so that we can cut it out Yeah, where does that happen? Lead on okay This is a cutting Department. And this is this is for metal. This is a luminous aluminum. Yes Is it a specific kind or just regular sheet aluminum? This is high grade aluminium All right Lumina my viewers and and sorry I'll you video how many this piece that's sitting right here how many of these would it take to make a suit of armor and probably about Sheet in half a sheet in the half of this will get a full suit of armor. Yeah, pretty much the most And it's it's actually okay. Oh, yeah, I see this is It's very soft. But you hammer it it doesn't stay soft. It it work hardness, right? Huh? Yeah, it gets more rigid and yeah, Wow. All right, so That's apartment. So if you're gonna do this Top part for this. Oh, right. We're just doing that. Yeah It's official not the center line Should be the folder on The car, you know, we'll all trip normally I'll get it right welcome to see how down a bit wrong cuz I'm gonna just add a bit more into them You can just tell that you haven't left enough material. Ya know do the same on that side Then yeah, and that's a bit too much so That's that dotted line I Love the idea that your dad was a was a cutter And this there's so much crossover between this process and and making clothing. Yeah Mr. Sanchez All right, how does this use tin snips, yeah I'll show you. Well, I'm gonna cut a bit this I'm gonna let you can't bit. Okay, absolutely. So it's really following it along And as you're cutting always push the shears Into it like that. I think if you don't you'll finish up with with them if you start doing that sort of thing You'll finish up with lots of horrible nasty barbs. Um, they're very spiteful and they hurt so you're pushing as you're cutting Yeah, so you can't push it's not sliding it and keeping it in that groove And it's you know, you can get really quick at it. I'm doing it slow because I'm demonstrating I have a normally I would do it that quick Because the angles of these you can get around really tight curves But you can't get free click on it so And never go right to the end of the cut always stop about there Never go there because then it floats a little dent and a little cruise. Oh, yeah, that makes it harder to follow up to it Well cut around that yeah pushing slashing Pretty much Thank You Tommy and go be as fast as me That comes into practice. Oh man you made it look so simple, this is oh These are wonderful cutters Yeah was yeah I seen that what do you mean by them, I'm not getting it yeah, that's especially The white stuff and again, you just put it around Again you just slide it in just keeping the curve going. Okay. Take your time then, okay You gain quick already I am any Legend your your excellent teacher Terry good people You can just come straight from there. Okay? Yeah There we go, that's it that's gonna be on you in a minute Should we get rid of the Knife sharp sharp corners Can tend to dig in you? okay, so The next step for this piece of metal is shaping Yeah, but there's over a hundred pieces of metal that have to get cut out. Yeah in order to make a suit That's when you start feeling it You either burn Okay, so we need to make some more patterns. Just make your armors. Are you? Yeah, yeah, just show me you see a little muscles. Yeah, well you watch this Like an egg that's what that's what I'm my god for inside me this arms a sign because sometimes this arm come what bike worse than this one because this one you Continuously clamped an intention holding just to cut out everyone is this hand open does more work in that one Wow Your holy site very solid this one. You just wire. Yes I get it. I'm getting it. It's starting to sink in. Yeah, so we transfer this adapter Beating it up. Okay, which is this way? Okay All right. I have been measured I have been patterned as with any costume The patterns are super important and I have been taught how to cut The aluminum which is no easy task and there's a lot to do So I'm gonna get back in there and get started cutting out all the chunks for this suit
