(applause) Ever notice how the people that seem to be the worst at their jobs always think they're the best at them? (terrible sax playing) I'm killing it right now! That's the Dunning-Kruger Effect. If you only know a little bit about a field, you actually lack the knowledge necessary to grasp the fact that you suck. In other words, you literally don't know what ya don't know. No, no, no. I'm smart enough to avoid that. Oh, intelligence has nothing to do with it. The Dunning-Kruger Effect has been shown in a wide variety of fields, from chess players to wine tasters to hunters, and even doctors. I am killing it right now! Whoa! Watch it. My next guest puts the "Dunning" in "Dunning-Kruger." Please give it up for University of Michigan Psychology professor David Dunning! (music and applause) But how do I even know he's an expert? Maybe I only think he is because of my cognitive biases. Wow. Your insecurities have done a number on you. Adam, these biases are something to be aware of, but nothing to feel bad about. They're just a part of human life, and they actually come from something quite useful. They're the byproducts of the shortcuts our brain uses in order to analyze information quickly in a complex world. And often their analysis is right. But not always. And that's where you have to be careful. Okay. But how? Well first, actually consider, don't neglect, what you don't know. Second, solicit feedback. There's an accuracy in numbers. And do consider all the alternatives. Don't just do the first thing that pops into your head. And if you really want to avoid the Dunning-Kruger Effect, become more competent. Always seek to be always learning. Well, learning is my entire thing, and our show's process is built around seeking feedback.
