There was a similar situation in Minneapolis in the early 90's. Al Noga, a former NFL player, and his extended family (who were part of an 80's pop group known as The Jets) fled the US when they heard possible drug charges were coming down on them. They had a huge mansion filled with all sorts of stuff and us high school kids would rummage through it when we were bored. The house got so vandalized that they eventually tore it down.
