Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
Oh man, part 2 ("Heartbreak at Burning Man") truly is heartbreaking. Glad he was so reflective and seemingly positive about the whole experience. Beautiful work.
That's Lost Machine Andy and his dad! Former Portland native. Best Maker I've ever met. I had no idea his dad was artistic but it certainly makes sense.
Funny story. I saw this piece at Burning Man and i went up and touched it. It IMMEDIATELY gave me one of the worst splinters i've had in years- a 1/2" long piece going directly into my fingertip- not along the surface, but almost completely perpindicular.
Now, two things: one, i work for burning man, so I have some access to med stuff that's a bit easier to get to than most participants. Two, I was pretty fucked up at the time, and it felt like a whole tree was embedded in my finger. My friends were making fun of me for whining about a splinter, but it kept getting more and more painful. So i go to the nearest med station and ask for tweezers. My friends are standing nearby giggling with how serious I'm taking this, until i tug on the end of this fucking finger-log and pull out not one but TWO of these things from my fingertip, and another from a less sensitive part of my palm I hadn't noticed. I nearly cried with relief.
So anyways, the project is awesome but holy shit, they need to sand things more.
Insane amount of work. absolutely stunning.
Wonderful work, sad that someone took it upon themselves to destroy it. I wonder what would motivate someone to act like that.
every 10 seconds i found myself saying "holy shit".
that is an immense amount of work and a truly amazing creation. i simply can't imagine
glueups intensify
The amount of work that went into this is actually horrifying. If someone told me that I had to build one of those to save the world, and I had 50 years to do it, it would be 50 long years of scornful looks as we rode into oblivion with absolutely no hope of salvation. A woodturner's dream? Nae. A nightmare, I think.
Seriously though, it's insanely impressive how much work went into that!
