opportunity to express on behalf of this parish our sincere condolences to the family and the relatives and friends of our dear departed brother remember that we as believers do not mourn as the gentiles do as unbelievers do but we mourn yes with a hope the hope that we will see our brother again and so with faith in jesus christ we receive the body of our brother ivan oliver for burial our mosley brother of clyde and malcolm mosley was baptized and confirmed at st luke's church he was educated at st luke's boys where he later became a pupil teacher due to the attitude of the students he left to become an apprentice carpenter at the ministry of public works he studied carpentry and joinery and made many kinds of furniture which he sold to those who liked them much to his wife's dismay he later transferred to bidc where he was promoted to the position of supervisor and was responsible for the maintenance of the industrial estates for the island he continued in this position until his retirement at the age of 60. now a poem called he only takes the best god saw you getting tired and the cure was not to be so he put his arms around you and whispered come to me with tearful eyes we watch you and saw you passed away although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay a golden heart stop beating hard-working hands to rest god broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best here ends the reading almighty god we remember before you today your servant ivan oliver and we pray that having opened to him the gates of larger life you will receive him more and more into your joyful service that with all who have served you in the past he may share in the eternal victory of jesus christ our lord who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen our first bible reading taken from the book of revelation to be done by nola troutman is taken from revelations chapter 21 verses 1 to 7. and i saw a new heaven and a new earth while the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea and i john saw the holy city new jerusalem coming down from god of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband and i heard a great voice out of heaven saying behold the tabernacle of god is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and god himself shall be with them and be their god and god shall wipe away all fears from the ice and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away and he that sat upon the throne said behold i made all things new and he said unto me right for these words are true and faithful and he said unto me it is done i am the alpha and the omega the beginning and the end i will give unto him that is the thirst of the fountain of the word of life freely he that overcometh shall inherit all things and i will be his god and he shall be my son this is the word of the lord psalm 23 the criminal version so [Music] [Music] is is [Music] friends [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Laughter] foreign [Music] hey me [Music] [Applause] our second bible reading taken from revelation taken from the book of john will be done by sister esther a reading from the word of god written in st john's gospel chapter 14 verses 1 to 6 john 14 1 to 6. do not let your hearts be troubled believe in god believe also in me in my father's house there are many dwelling places if it were not so what i have told you that i go to prepare a place for you and if i go and prepare a place for you i will come again and will take you to myself so that where i am there you may be also and you know the place and you know the way to the place where i'm going thomas said to him lord we do not know where you are going how can we know the way jesus said to him i am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me the word of the lord the him before the economy 531 531. [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] is foreign wow [Music] is is [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey [Music] i speak to you in the name of god the father god the son and all the holy spirit amen [Music] we got to hear today not to mourn the death of ivan mosley but rather to study for his life and all that it has meant to all of us all of us who have loved him and known him throughout the years on earth i want to just outlive some points that can perhaps help us as we deal with this the death of our loved one that and also in learning to live our own lives as i refer to the story in john chapter 11 we find the story of jesus of jesus coming to the tomb of lazarus who had died some four days before and in that story we find that jesus had been notified of the fact that lazarus was sick but had delayed his coming knowing that lazarus would already be dead when he arrived the way that jesus responded to the death of his friend lazarus gives us a lot of insight into ways that god the father might expect us to respond when one of our own has been called home the scripture tells us that jesus swept an outward expression of his sorrow also says he groaned in his spirit the inward death and pain that death brings that which we sometimes cannot express to anyone else at least not in words his grief as your grief is personal and nobody else can really know how much it hurts sometimes and i think there are some things that we can indeed learn that death does to us as we come together for a service such as this one one of the things that death does to us is call us to remember it is at the death of a loved one that we remember who remember the good times and the not so good times jesus met because i believe he remembered he remembered the person and the friend that lazarus was he remember the times that they had eaten and fellowship together in his home and there are a lot of things that i believe he remembered with martha and mary today as we think of ivan i am sure that we remember lots of things about him and there are words that will probably summarize his life as it relates to each one of us who knew him and i want us to think of a couple things with special memories that we have of him what do we remember what kind of person was he was he loving was he honest was he stubborn was he a quitter all i can say about ivan was that he was a talker and then i go to visit him to take the blessed sacrament there would always be a story i remember him i can't see him um tell you that story but he went on and on and on about a young lady in his days but whatever our memories of ivan called on to them cherish them they were bring smiles to your faces many times in the future but i implore his daughter and his close relatives not to dwell in the past for life is not there i would rather that you look to the future and keep your focus on jesus and even the not so good memories can be counted as a blessing as a gift that we have received for having known ivan we also learn that death teaches us to look at our own lives how are we living our lives and as jesus encountered and he looked around when he arrived at lazarus's grave and i believe he encountered many persons there not only mary and martha but those who would have shared with his friends um the pharisees members of his church and i believe his presence there even caused them to have to review what was going on in their own lives what were they doing that they felt was so important before lazarus died you know that does that you know it suddenly kind of levels the playing field we are all on equal footing we realize that we all have we all have to and will die no matter who we are because death is no respecter of persons we all will die that also cause us to review to look at our own lives because the scripture tells us that we too will someday go to the door that ivan has walked through jesus asked martha and mary do you remember the things that i told you do you recall the times that we talked about eternity do you still believe these things do you still trust me do you still think that i can do something about this situation what about us do we believe god's word do we believe that jesus overcame death do we believe that he died and rose again and because he lives that we too shall live even after we experience this physical death do we live our lives according to god's will and do we believe his promise of eternal life to all those who believe in him do we believe in him do we believe that he even exists and do our lives reflect our faith in god and our belief in christ or do we live our lives as though there is no god as there as though there is no tomorrow as though there is no future life that death is the end are we living our lives aimlessly we need to seriously take a good look at our lives because brothers and sisters today people are dying really fast we are living in the in the presence of of corporate 19 a plate which is no respecter of persons we should also learn that death teaches us to look again to refocus our own direction suddenly when death comes to our door it seems that as though possessions and plans don't seem important anymore as it did to martha and mary and have we noticed that when they're faced with death that our parents and possessions suddenly don't seem important after all when with all the money and the property we have cannot heal us cannot bring us back to life or save us from death and then our loved one causes us to look at these things to think about these things perhaps mary and martha's perspective have changed maybe their beliefs have become a little blurry over time they have might have become complacent and maybe because of the unexpectedness of lazarus death there was uncertainty about life in general and at that time we find jesus coming alongside them and that by the way is his role as comforter he he comes alongside us he comforted us and he said to them i am the one who has the final answers jesus said to mary i am the resurrection and the life and he who believes me needs only though yet shall he live and whoever lives and believe in me shall never die he asked ma mary do you believe this brothers and sisters do we believe this this evening remember what james 4 14 says james said what is your life you are a miss that appears for a little while and then vanishes and even though ivan was in his old age even though we had lost loved ones who were old and aged my mother died last two months ago she was 91 years we don't know but we don't ever look forward to their death do we but they have to go we have to go we all have to go at some time because life is like a vapor that appears for a little while and then it passes away and it was perhaps ivan's time to go friends none of us know what will happen to us either because our lives are very fragile and they're things that we fought last year february march they're things that we were going to do that we thought nothing could stop us from doing that all of a sudden we were we couldn't do because of announcement here and there by some government official and so i believe that the old people like my grandmother knew what they were talking about if they said if it be the lord's will proverbs 27 1 reminds us do not boast about tomorrow because we don't know what a day will bring forth and right now a lot of people are living in a time of uncertainty because they don't know when they wake up tomorrow what is next what else is corvette 19 want to do very monday do not boast about tomorrow do not cut off things until tomorrow the passage gives us some significant reasons why we should never presume the future one because life is unpredictable and corporate 19 this is one of the lessons that program 19 has taught and is still teaching us that life is unpredictable we don't even know what will happen today much less next week or next year and the truth is that no one can predict the future it is like the gospel reading that the jesus told the parable of the rich fool whose land produced such a multiple harvest that he didn't know what to do and his final decision was to tear down his barn and build larger ones to store all his grain and other goods and he said i shall say to myself now as for you who have so many good things stored up for many years rest eat drink and be merry but god said and hindu fool this night your life will be demanded of you and the things that you have prepared to whom will they belong thus it will be for the one who stores up treasures for himself but is not rich in what matters god to god brothers and sisters in christ we need to refocus our lives a lot of us in this day our attempt is to make as much money as we can to acquire as much love as we can so that we think when we reach a certain days we can be comfortable we can we can retire and put up our feet brothers and sisters in christ's life is so short and our lives are like a myth that appears for a little while and then vanishes our lives are like a misty fall in the grand scheme of things so friends life is too unpredictable and it is too short to live it not knowing where we're going we count our lives and years but god tells us in something to twelve to number our days and the truth of the matter is that all of us are just one heartbeat away from eternity in first standard 23 david said yet as surely as the lord lives and as you live there is only one step between me and death and again our lives are like a vapor here one minute and gone the next and it doesn't take us too long to get there the writer of hebrew says it this way it is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment you see it's all a man had to do if all we had to do was to live and then die that would not be so hard because we could do the things that only we would enjoy and not be concerned about the aftermath but the bible makes clear that each of us will be held accountable for how we live this site of death what do we believe about life what are the important things in our lives what really matters when life comes to an end what do we believe about death what do we believe about life after death what place has god does god have in my life and do i believe that jesus died on the cross for me so that i may not feel dead these are questions that the death of a loved one can cause us to reflect on jesus said whoever believes in me will live even though he does god's intention for life was best expressed by jesus himself jesus said for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life you see in reality death is never the end but whether i believe i said it is just a comma it is just a pause it is a doorway to which we must travel and what this on the other side is determined by the choices that we make this side of that doorway john 14 says let not your hearts be troubled you believe in god believe also in me in my father's house are many mansions if it were not so i would have told you i go to prepare a place for you and if i go into prayer prayers for you i will come again and receive you to myself that there i am there you may be also and where i go you know the way you know and of course we heard the gospel that god's forgiven this morning and the disciple is responsible but we don't know the way but jesus wanted his disciples to see what he wants us to see is that we need to trust him to take him at his world yeah we need to take god at his word he has promised and the word of god said he is faithful we can know that we can trust the word of god because he is the one that has already jesus has already been there he died he rose again death was no big deal to him and it is no big deal to us if we believe in him because he is the resurrection he is the life because of jesus christ and the hope of an eternal resurrection that he has provided we can along with the apostle paul proclaimed as he proclaimed the first corinthians 15 54 so then this corruptable has put on in corruption and this mortal has put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the fame that is written death is swallowed up in victory or death where is your stain or hades there is your victory when paul asks where or death is your victory where or death is your stain what he's really saying is that he has so much hope and comfort in jesus christ that the sting of death leaves behind no doubt no affairs because he knows the one who has conquered death a lot of us today are free a lot of things are happening across the world in addition to court with 19 and a lot of us are filled with fair they're filled with fear but i say as believers and remind us that god has not given us a spirit of fear rather he has given us love and power and a sound mind a lot of us as christians we're we're like the disciples when jesus died we are covering in our rooms at home our ministries in our churches have come to an end and we are all afraid but they want to encourage us this evening but since this is our god the god that we serve he is still in control and we need not fear that because the life of the christian when we take up our cross to follow jesus we have to be prepared today amen we have to be prepared to die jesus said that his apostles the servant is not greater than his master they persecuted me they will persecute you and we have to be prepared to go even to death the the corporate 19 is not the first epidemic that the world has experienced from even in jesus's time there was the disease the leper leper and those people became outcasts down to the ages where there were different plays there were different epidemics the black death all kind of place that they had but what did the christians do they did not hide behind the door of the churches or the conference they came out and they even ministered to those with the disease not fearing death some of them did die from the disease but jesus said in as much as well he said those who seek to save their lives will lose it and those who lose their lives from mercy and for the gospel faith will save it we as believers we as christ followers have to be prepared to face even death yeah so today i want to leave us with a challenge to remember remember our brother look again at our own lives how we are living our lives whether we are living them according to how god wants us to live them and then to refocus refocus set our lives in the right direction be guided by god's holy spirit to live a life that pleases him brothers and sisters in christ before it is truly none of us knows the day of our death none of us knows the days of christ's return but these two things are sure we will die and our lord and savior jesus christ will return again amen [Music] my brothers and sisters in christ let us affirm our faith this evening in the word of the apostles creed i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth i believe in jesus christ his only son our lord he was conceived by the power of the holy spirit and born of the virgin mary he suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended to the dead on the third day he rose again he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and of the life everlasting amen please leave for our prayers prayers
