A Reasonable Response - Chad Veach (02.23.2014)

it's great to be in Los Angeles I love this city you might love LA come on I I lived in LA for six years I went to Bible College here in Los Angeles I was a youth pastor in East LA for five and a half years I'm half Mexican are there any Mexicans in the building today you know it la cucaracha alabama your mama whatever but those logos were arrow so I was a youth pastor for I don't even know what that means as a youth pastor for five and a half years of East LA LA just has such a huge part of my my heart and it's an honor to be in this awesome church this awesome city are you well today are there any married people in the house today any happily married people in the house today come on I am a happily married man been married for almost six years to a wonderful wonderful gal lady boo her name is Julia and our story is pretty unique you know our art our dad's I don't know if you knew this our dad's got saved together our dad things that have been never in Seattle but our dad's got saved together filled with the spirit together called in the ministry together our parents got married on the same day the same year at the same hour our whole life's we grew up celebrating Thanksgiving together so I was telling the story the other day somebody's like oh my gosh that's so cute are you guys like childhood sweethearts and I was like no that's not what happened see wouldn't happen would you know what happened was I missed seven straight Thanksgivings because I was in LA and travel and whatnot and but when I came back to the Thanksgiving table I looked across the table I said dang Julia done grown up pass the potatoes let me get some of that gravy so we made a baby I mean we got married and then we made some I have two wonderful kids let me show you a photo of how good god is to me these are my two kids so on the right that that's Georgia Estelle what we call her Gigi that's okay and then that's my son four months old his name is listen to this his name is Winston Charles V CH is that good but on the streets that calm dub C look gangster so God's been good to me has God been good to you come on anybody thankful to Jesus this morning come on give him a shout of praise if you think put a god today amen come on you bring a Bible this morning go on your Bible at Psalm 23 if you're new to church this is a famous portion of Scripture I hope that you enjoy again you do not have to be a Christian to come to church you can say amen to that there is no prerequisite for anybody to be in this building and our hope our prayer with pastor Phillip and Holly you know when you come to church it's not so you get beat up it's so you get built up and you're gonna leave this morning with a little bit more faith a little bit more hope a little bit more joy a little bit more coffee amen to that and you know our prayers that as we just gather together and talk for about the next 30 minutes well we're not talking about a book or about a building we're talking about a man his name is Jesus and we go to this book because we believe that our God is alive our God is real and and we don't just serve the God that's just well was an afterthought and lived a great life back then we serve a God that's alive today and Psalm 23 it's gonna encourage us this morning I'm gonna read from the screens and you could read along with me go ahead and just out loud I like it when the church reads the Bible out loud come on everybody together ready begin the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want he makes me to lie down in green pastures he leads me beside the still waters he restores my soul he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake and yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for you are with me your rod and your staff they comfort me and you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies you anoint my head with oil my cup runs over surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord come on somebody say him into that whoo that's good preaching right there just Psalm 23 you know Psalm 23 is written by a man named David David well he's a bit of a legend according to this book and fact he's probably the second most talked about character in all of the Bible besides Jesus David writes this beautiful Psalm a psalm as a song he writes down this song not as a young man but as an old man he writes it as an elder he writes it as a conclusion to a life well-lived a life marked full of the goodness of God he writes down this recollection in this memory of who God is he starts off his song with talking about who God is outside he likens to God as a shepherd I don't know about you but I'm thankful this morning that we don't serve any Shepherd we serve the Good Shepherd anybody believed that this morning he says you know God is like a shepherd the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want in other words he says if I have God I have everything I need he says the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want he he God he makes me to lie down in green pastures he leads me beside still waters he restores my soul he leads me down paths of righteousness with awe which are paths that leads towards my happiness he said he leads me down paths of righteousness for his name's sake and yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil why God's with me so he starts off with this beautiful imagery of God outside as a shepherd watch verse five and six he transitions in thought from outside to inside I don't know about you but I'm thankful that in times of life when it's cold and dark and rainy outside I've been invited to the house of the Lord he says God now in verse 5 God's not just a shepherd he says God like a host says you've prepared a banqueting table in the presence of my enemies you have anointed my head with oil my cup runs over and surely I'm convinced of this goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever David is writing a response at the end of his life to who God is I want to preach a message today at this awesome church in Los Angeles California I want to preach a message called a reasonable response would you write that down somewhere a reasonable response look at the person next to you just tell him I'm so glad you came today come on tell somebody I'm so glad you came today come on we're gonna pray we're gonna thank God for this morning amen come on bow your heads father we thank you this morning that you're here you're with us we thank you that there's hope in you and today God we we've turned our attention to you we're asking that in these moments that we spend together learning about you that our eyes would be opened our ears would be open and got our prayers that we would see Jesus we want to see your son open our eyes to see him and God we're all thanking you today that we do not live in Denver where they don't win Super Bowls thank you Jesus for the Seahawks the triumphant victors in your name a whoop tail for t-38 are there any questions I think not in Jesus name and we all said holla at your boy we don't know how to act we never won a Super Bowl boy we don't not act just get too excited there is a huge difference between a reaction and a response let me explain a reaction is just knee-jerk you don't think about it you know when somebody cuts you off in traffic you're not thinking well how do I respond to this person no he just it's instantaneous he just you know the devil comes out you and you know you just if you react to things you react to two touchdowns you react to you know people not texting you back you reacted that I mean just you just have all kinds of react your kids you react to your spouse you react to you know you just react the reactions happen our response is different a response is it's mulled over it's pondered it's thought about it's it's a conclusion you sleep on it you you think about it now I will tell you that that sometimes in life you will need a reaction but for most things in life you'll need a response let me tell you an example when you do reaction the other day I was dreaming and I remembered my dream isn't that the best thing you can remember what you jumped about in my dream I remember what happened some dude some perpetrator try to mess with my daughter Georgia oh no you didn't okay I'm gonna get you sucker so I started to chase this guy down like I'm running after this guy and you ever notice in your dreams you could run through like different time periods and eras that you could be in all kinds of people up here in your dream you don't even really like that much like how did you get here just you know I mean just it's just dream right it's weird but I'm dead set on catching this guy I'm gonna get you sucker so I'm tasting them down the fields and parks and recs and all this stuff and then all of a sudden we end up in Costco I think I was really hungry that night so I'm chasing him down I'm so dead set on getting him I'm saying no no to all the sweet ladies with the free samples you know I'm saying I'm passing all the saints of God just going after this guy so finally I see him he opens up the freezer door and he tries to hide at the end of the freezer aisle at the bottom shelf but I see him so I'm like I'm gonna get you so I run up to the freezer section I grabbed the door I fling her wide open I'm gonna grab him by his hair and pull him out I get him so I run up to the fruit section grab the handle pull it open and reach down to pull him by his hair out now what I was doing in my dream I didn't realize it but I had reached over and I was doing in real life and I was pulling my wife's hair I was so start all thing up what are you doing stop messing with my daughter go back to bed go to night-night nobody talking to you you know I freaked I panicked I don't know what to do you know it's a head I've never been here before but I was kind of encouraged right like I don't got the most chest hair but I was encouraged you know that you know I'm a man I protect my home now in some cases in life you were some of y'all got that some case in life you will need a reaction but I will tell you for the majority of life especially in this kingdom it would demand a response the cross and Jesus demands not a reaction but a response we don't want to react to God we want to respond to God David writes down this beautiful response listen to what he says he says you have prepared a banqueting table in the presence of my enemies I don't know about you but I'm excited to go to heaven anybody else anybody excited for heaven whoo I can't wait for heaven man we're gonna go to heaven the Bible says we gonna walk streets of gold that's awesome baba says we will sit at the banqueting table and feast anybody love to eat here we don't gotta count no calories in heaven they ain't no gluten-free in heaven ain't no such thing as a vegan in heaven we're gonna get busy y'all you don't got to bring a side dish or side dish or a salad we're gonna eat because he prepared it the Bible says he will wipe away every tear from our either will be no more pain no more sorrow no more sickness no more death is anybody excited for heaven come on this life is not your home this is a vapor this is not my citizenship my citizenship is in a greater place I am a sojourner on this place I'm going to heaven anybody else and I'm telling you I am NOT going to heaven because I come to church because I read my Bible because I pray I'm not going to heaven because what I've done I'm going to heaven because of what he's done says no eye can see and no mind can conceive the things that God has in store for those who love him and are called according to his purpose says I'm excited for heaven and it says he has prepared God has prepared God has prepared a banqueting table in the presence of my hashtag haters in front of my enemies what's David talking about dating I listen if there's anybody in the Bible that knows a thing or two about enemies it's David David is the man as a young teenager takes five smooth stones goes against an 11-foot giant and kills a man named Goliath David was so accustomed to war that when he would return from battle the whole city would break out in his songs and a parade and they would sing a song Saul has slain his thousands but david has slain his ten thousands david knew what it meant to have an enemy even in his own home his own son Absalom rose up against him in rebellion and would defy his father if there's anybody in the Bible that knew what an enemy was as David and David is not even talking about people in your life that don't like you people that subtweet about you people that post nasty things on Facebook or coworkers David is talking about a real enemy of your life his name is Satan it was a foreshadow of what was to come he says you know even in the presence of my enemy I still get to sit at the banqueting table did you know that today the Bible says of Satan he is the accuser of the Brethren in other words he wags his little finger in front of the the judgment seat he says God really really God you're gonna let her sit at the table God do you know what she's done do you know where she spent got him don't really got he's a Yankees fan really God any wags his finger and he accuses us come on I am so glad that I'm sitting here not based upon my behavior but based upon my belief in Jesus come on I don't deserve to sit here it's scandalous that I have a seat here anybody thankful for the life and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ morning come on give him a shot appraised if you believe that he's awesome and he's purchased a way for you to be seated in heavenly places come on you have prepared a banqueting table in the presentation that watch this watch this he says this and you anoint my head with oil in other words you had understand this church the anointing of God is symbolic of the approval of God whatever God anoints he approves us so God says this before you sit down at the table so that everybody at the table knows so that your enemy knows so that you know I have approved for you to sit at this table he said come here son let me mark your head with the anointing of God come on church I'm thankful today that we serve a God that not only accepts us but he approves of us I used to think wow God is so amazing well this is amazing we serve this God and he accepts me he loves me for who I am even though I make mistakes and I say bad words and I do bad things and even though I don't measure up that you thank you Jesus you accept me for who I am you ever see those signs at restaurants no shoes no shirt no I think God is amazing even though I don't have it all put together he still accepts me as if to think for one moment our God is that small or that punitive God does not stop at the acceptance he moves one level further to approval could you imagine I go to my father's house for Christmas dinner a knock on the door my father opens the door he says come on in son come on in come on in I don't really approve of your whole skinny jeans thing and your little accent I don't know what you do with your hair these days but come on in come on in you look like a poor man's Johnny Depp come on in let's preach it somewhere the other day and they tagged me in the photo so it was great to have Johnny Depp at the church today I was like which one Edward Scissorhands 21 Jump Street I don't know if that's a backhanded compliment or not but come on in come on in son literally approve of it but I accept you come on Church God's not that small God approves of you because when he sees you he doesn't even your life has been hidden in Christ the Bible says he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus our Lord I'm telling you today God is pleased with you he doesn't just accept you he approves of you is there anybody thankful that you have a father in heaven that approves of your life come on come on if you don't have a father in your life maybe you didn't grow up with a dad that had words of affirmation maybe you don't have a father in your life that's been a present reality let me encourage you Psalm 27 it says when my father and my mother forsake me the Lord will receive me you can lift your head today if you were happy if you have an approval addiction you want everybody in your life to approve of you just know you have somebody in your life that's like in your photos commenting and telling you how much he loves you glory God takes it another step further he always does doesn't he he says you're prepared to banquet he table press of my enemies you anoint my head with oil I love this next part and you fill my cup to overflowing he says my cup runneth over this is Jesus we do not serve the god of enough we serve the god of more than enough john chapter 10 verse 10 jesus said the evil one has come to steal and to kill and to destroy you but I've come in your life what to give you life and to give it more abundantly that zowie life that abundant that overflowing life come on this is God this is his heart for your life this is his nature this is his character God's revealing himself to you saying come on I don't just come on what kind of party is it if we don't have a drink gotta say get a cup put it out we're gonna pull it all the way to the brim y'all we're gonna Ponte come on church week church is not supposed to be endured it's supposed to be enjoy come on I got Jesus I'm having more fun than anybody else anybody else say amen to that come on this is God I love one of my favorite stories in all the Bible is when Jesus goes out he's preaching all day I mean he's been just preaching fire that loving it all day long the disciples come up to him they go Jesus it's been Auster's been amazing we really love him got a lot of notes down but Jesus the people look hungry like snicker commercial hungry and and we don't know what to do what do you want what do you want us to do with them watch what God asks he says well what do you have God will only ask of you what you have God will not ask you to give anything you don't possess he will only ask of what you have he says well what what do you have come on church stop belly aching about what you don't have start thanking God for what you do have hey man he says well what what do you have he said well we got a little bit of fish and we got a little bit of bread so God took what they had he gave thanks and he performed a miracle come on anybody believe that our God performs miracles he performs a miracle that day the Bible says 5,000 men all eight plus the women and the children but my favorite part of the story is not just the fact that five thousand men eight plus the women and the children my favorite part is that if you go over here there's all these barrels of leftovers come on God never just meets the need he super sees the need he's not the god of enough he's the god of more than enough God never just fills your cup he fills it to overflowing come on is anybody thankful today though we serve a God that always goes above and beyond what you can ask or imagine or think I grew up in a home my mom is she making and and I grew up in a house or used to bother me every Thanksgiving used to drive me crazy everything's keeping my mom she would never buy enough Martinelli's sparkling cider striving crazy man like I shop at the same grocery store I see the bottles on bottles and you know there's about 85 people coming to the house how you only gonna buy four bottles Martinelli's sparkling cider is not a drink we drink every day nobody wakes up on Monday more like life is like Martinelli's sparkling cider this is like Christmas Easter stuff man so I knew I wasn't gonna get seconds cuz she didn't buy enough so I would take my glass in the kitchen say oh not today homie I'm doing this I would take the bottle I would fill my glass you know when you fill your glass with Martinelli's sparkling cider it goes to the top but then by the time it makes up its mind you got like a third of the cup I'm playing games with you today I'd do it again I'd do it again it would take me about five trips back to that thing I would get it right to the brim I would gingerly walk back to my chair I would sit down the cup I would begin to strategize how I was gonna make this one cup glass say okay that's what you're gonna do let's go green bean let's go gravy let's go Turkey sip let's go let's do roll yam ham sip sip come on church yellow too much bone man Seattle people so angry they don't laugh some of us come to God with God it's your anyway anyway get some peace God just be healing sir do you got any up there running low okay I understand fine we think that our God is in short supply or short demand I'm telling you our God he owns the cattle on a Thousand Hills the earth is the Lord and all that is within it our God doesn't just meet needs he supersedes needs God will give you so much peace it'll surpass your understanding gotta give you so much joy it'll become your strength gotta give you so much hope you can have hope against hope come on does anybody believe that our God he is real he is alive he is able he is willing give him a shout of praise this morning if you believe that today that's our God that's our God it says give me that cup we'll fill this overflowing david says you have prepared a banquet table presence of my enemies you anoint my head with oil my cup runneth over I love the last verse and surely I'm convinced of this he's saying his goodness and His mercy will follow me all the days of my life what's David saying David is not saying that God owns two dogs in heaven one of them's dogs named goodness one of them dog named mercy and wherever you go these dogs gonna follow you you go to the club dogs in the club you go to the church goodness and mercy if you study out if you truly study out what David saying David is not even describing anything following him what David is really saying is this he's saying God in every season of my life when I was on the mountaintop of success and they chanted my name when I was in the bottom of despair when I committed adultery murder and my son passed away he said in the highest of the high and the lowest of the low in every season of my life I have found you right next to my side he's saying I have found God to not be a god that loves me conditionally but it seems as if he loves me unconditionally David is suggesting what I hope to convince you of that you really just can't shake God he can't shake him he's already made up his mind we have a guy in our church he plays um he plays wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks and he came to me in the spring last year before the season starting he said hey we have this big scrimmage coming up it's almost like a game he said what we'll give you some passes want you and your family come out and and just enjoy and just get a glimpse of what the team's gonna be like let's say absolutely we get three days of sunshine a year it landed on one of those days I knew this was gonna be a good day so I take my family we get out to the practice facility and they're out there and I'm talking about what about three plays in me arriving at this scrimmage my friend my boy he catches a pass runs down and scores a touchdown when my guy scored a touchdown I lost my mind I always thought I was talking about people's mamas I'll stone gang signs out I didn't know how to handle this I started Church chance you know I just I didn't I don't know how to behave in this position you know predicament I was just I was too excited right but it wasn't just the fact that my guys scored a touchdown it was how he scored a touchdown our quarterback Russell Wilson got me on center he said hut hut hike when he hiked the ball my buddy ran straight at the defender he took one Jeff step to the left got his defender to bite went right got the separation and caught the pass went down the field I thought that is amazing one move and he got the separation he just one just ran at him the okey-doke to the left and it made me laugh - I know ain't just runs down - catches that I thought that is amazing but you know what I think I think some people today we still think one little move and we shake God one moment of weakness one moment of sin one bad week one bad day and all of a sudden I'm out of graces I don't have the blessing God's over God's over here and I'm over there and so I got to get back come on you cannot shake God you can't shake it the Bible says me I'm convinced neither height nor depth nor power no principality nor angel nor demon nothing can separate us from the love that is in Christ Jesus God has already made up his mind God is going to be faithful gracious kind when you are faithless he is faithful that's our God and David experienced the goal I can't believe that goodness and mercy of been next to me every season of my life and David ends verse 6 the way he starts verse 1 in verse 1 he said it this way the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want you win and he ends his whole Psalm with the same thought in conclusion because you seat me because you annoy me because you give me the cuff because you've been so good he says fine I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever David is not saying God okay fine I'll go to church every Sunday I'll do it I'll do it I'll go to church I'll throw a little tip in the bucket you know I'll do it and I'll just you find you win you win I'll do it I'll go to church I'll dwell forever I'll do it forever David is David's not even talking about a geographical location he's saying God because you've been so good my response to you is you win and all that I want is you wherever you are that's where I'll be have you thought about this lately how do we respond to a god that's given us everything what do we say to a king who took away everything we deserve and gave us everything he deserves is that a thank you card dear God Thanks is that a text message dear God emoji emoji emoji you're the best lol I would suggest today that the only response that's reasonable is you david says fine god you don't just get my my time or my money but God you get the one thing that I think you've been after this whole time you get me romans chapter 12 verse 1 I end with this this is my conclusion keyboard player and worship team you can come Romans chapter 12 verse 1 the Apostle Paul's writing this same response and he says it this way he says I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God this is your reasonable service other translations say this is your reasonable act of worship the reasonable thing to do is to say God fine you have me you have my heart you have my life I will not just respond in attendance I will not just respond in ties I will respond with my life Here I am here's my life I would say that if you give your life to Jesus because he gave his life to you then that would be a response that is fit for a king some of us have reacted to Jesus good or bad but I would hope and pray that you'd ponder the goodness and the grace of God and conclude in such a way to say God because you see me in places I do not deserve to be seated and because you approve of me when I don't even think I'm worthy of approval because you keep giving me more than I asked for and meeting my needs because you never shake me even when I try lose you Here I am
