[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey guys welcome to that table so down here makeer hello right so this is a personal one and I'm just including you all in on my journey oh I have been a massive fan of the electric mistress for a very long time but I've been looking to replace my original again for a very long time kind of and I haven't found anything that really nails it what so let's start it is a flanger it is a flanger so why are you looking to replace it um it's very old now so this is 1970 I think there's 77 mm-hmm so that makes it got 41 years old and it's a bit fragile and there are parts in there that are irreplaceable so don't really want to be taking that gigging with it yeah you know things like that the tiniest not scratches all the paint off and and it's so funny isn't it because they weren't you know I can imagine when Mike and the gang were making them back in the 70s they weren't thinking this is going to be around in 40 years no with people going oh my goodness me is the best-selling flanger I've ever heard that why I don't I don't I don't know Mike if you were thinking that if you ever watch that pedal show but I can imagine that you probably were I mean if you have a look at the way that it's made Mike Matthews by the way he was there he met Mike yeah yeah let's give him a honk because I've met him as well so he's absolutely deserved so this really is I think electric - is the most fascinating company one of the reasons that this sounds so good is it doesn't fill to the top end because of that you hear clock noise and let me give this here that one so today's a ceasefires we're using Marshall 1980 1987 x50 what plexi reissue and fender super reverb little bit classic in the amplifier today yeah just together [Music] it's such a great sound that supers on to so hardly working yeah the Marshall is embarrassingly on about the same in both channels actually slightly more in the in the bass channel right but for everyone who might say oh you should turn up to get some overdrive I love it like that yeah yeah that just cleaning Headroom it's a lovely clean up get with it so that's really really lovely okay so pop noise clock noise alright this is this is the clock noise right it's not that bad well probably would be it like patent pending but yeah I think one of the things with that you know we with added gain and you know depending on the you know the noise and stuff it you know that can be distracting they can be racist alright so this is that first of all this show is not intended to be a you know get Gilmore tones get any summers tones but with the reason I'm referencing them as any some wasn't David Gilmore to guys I can actually honk Andy Summers I I interviewed him on the phone it was fascinating actually you got me that interview you did I don't forget that you and if you you've got to get that to come on the phone oh sorry I just love briefly on the phone doesn't David Gilmour's concerned that's a honk I think I tell you what they get so he gets an air pop right this so the reason I reference those guys is because they they use this pedal a lot David Gilmore for five years from 1960s from 77 to 83 recorded a lot with have you been on Gilmore is calm I love that website and for dad to come out with a fact like that is unusual it suggests to me my research I've done I have done a little bit of research you know well because you know it's you know from as far as motivation is concerned this is my this is I love this right now that clock noise other flanges don't have that clock noise the reason they don't have that clock noises they filter it out but what happens when you filter that clock noise out is that you inevitably get rid of some high-end because if it's in the signal part that's gonna affect you know what's comes out and then this is analog right this complete because no Stan lights the mid-70s there's no late seventies there's no additional modeling going on at that point there's no nothing that hasn't been invented yet so it's purely analog purely and using some sort of chip yeah like a brigade yeah chip so right here we go so clean sound and the original mistress [Music] now if I put a little bit of drive on with that so this is them the eyes of t-rex a sense of Mudhoney the Danish I'm warm Danish ham y1 and man special ah so special makes all the difference for Danish hands do it well if we if Michaels touchdown think it becomes special I love that man he's so great so yes so with some gain and then you hear the mistress [Music] [Music] very strongly filtered now this is better sorry go I've got this set in a way that I've got the write down a really slow yeah I've got the range up up fairly high Nick and the color up the range in the color doing right so the the range is the frequency sweep of the flange and the color is is how the intensity of the flames so if I again with with thee [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he's desperately trying to get in there and adjust the knobs back from where I put them on their max but I think you only find out what a noob does as it were if you max in minute right yeah so these guy great so right so that's and there's a sound to that that's so special but because that don't filter it you have this top end to it so without the mistress on the back put it back a little bit all right range okay that's fine so if you just I just want you to hear the direct sound and then when the flash goes on top and I what did it listen to the top end right so and this was really important so for example when david gilmour soloing and he's digging in and a lot of flanges just don't have that top hand oh yeah they get to a point it's like now we need to filter that off yep it's getting a buffer high-end to me it's it's that really it's not just trouble its presence as well absolutely it's it's right there yeah absolutely yeah so I want to do questions but we move on yes one what does the switch do ah the switch is so cool so at the moment it's on normal fledging it's it's it's moving backwards avoids the switch turns off the the LFO so that all you get is you can move the where that frequency that like the crossover point so just fix it so yeah so that what you're moving is the delay time and it fixes where that that sort of feel sorry so if you use it isn't it no I use it in a really slow rate okay round here so with the slow rate on but now return the only get off [Music] so suddenly the right novice doesn't do anything with using the right [Music] [Music] I love that I love that come in 32 it's time for your refuel it sound like a bloomin robot actually to be fair I suppose that's the kind of things they had around at that time to create those sorts of weird TV effect noise sounds isn't it yeah yeah okay just before we move on what is a flanger quickly as opposed to the phaser okay so a flanger is you are doubling the signal and then you are delaying it ever so slightly you're delaying it it's a shorter time period than a chorus and then you're modulating that time backwards and forwards then the only difference really between the flange and the chorus is that delay the delay time the electric mistress things got about 18 milliseconds chorus is generally like 25 30 milliseconds but that's it was this is why you see a lot of courses have the chorus flanger switches just there just shortens that delay time phase is different because instead of modulating the time it modulates the it's motor than the phase so it's whipping the frequency it's really interesting but they have fun too many different sounds yeah and which is again why people say I want to have a flanger phaser and a chorus in one box I'm saying well you can get the flanger and the chorus in one boss but the phase is a whole different oh thank you if we're talking a little yeah okay so our challenge now is to see which of these others sound a bit like it yeah yeah yeah yes that is the challenge so yeah I'm gonna use the stuff to tell you Sam with the Mudhoney that's such a great sign I paddle okay now this is what the mr. song [Music] [Music] [Music] right here we go distract [Music] [Music] I have no idea if you use the flyer on that but it's just best you know I'm not try and play you know yeah yeah it's just the flavors up is ways to even though there's quite a lot of gain in his sound it's too distorted and therefore ice sound this is not a sound like Gilmour thing I mean if it is we failed dismal easy yeah let's move along so anyway so let's see if we can so that was the original mistress right and it's got on the top end and a little bit of movement so let's see how we go with the electric lady if I turn them right down and then again a range up nice and high that's ok right this is it [Music] [Applause] stop it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] I was a load of weird artifact he robot II stuff came in with the miss with the elect lady yeah and I was wondering if it was in the mistress as well yes but to us or more pleasing yes degree yeah that's possible yeah it's it's really interesting is that's that stuff has gotta be there for it to sound right but there's something about what the mistress does it's so it sits in a better spot okay so yeah that's let lady this is the heart and flanger [Music] something about the fundamental EQ of that is very different from the other two in a most pleasing fashion okay why is it so much louder I've got a theory tell me theory I tell you why so much louder it's not that it's a much louder it's the electric mistress is so much quieter the original alleged missus drops your signal by about 20 percent okay I think what these guys are doing compensating for that volume loss I was wondering if it might be doing something to the phase of the - no because it's in okay planning on just the money [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's just loud sounds way louder to me yeah yeah I said you know is there an internal joke I don't know there may be there may be so it's a really common complaint with the mistress the mother thought yeah so these are all going into replicates to get rid of that problem yep yep this will be scary I wonder if it's even nearly but it's been in here so long the actions drops it's touching the frets let's see if we can get away from so what I need is loads of gain okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sorry this guitar is unplayable yeah the action is dropped in the stream it sounds really good a frets are on the strings I just when you work the reason for doing that when we were listening to the flanger earlier it reminded me a lot of that early 80's yeah yeah yeah do I pull Gilbert and I mean blimey I can't play that stuff but you know where you heavy rocking stuff yeah I'm gonna take this home for a birthday down I think it needs some lovin it needs saving right so yeah losses the heartburn flanger was cool but like you said change the time but listen to listen to the I go from the mistress into the box [Music] [Music] can you just flick between that lady is there something set on the elect lady that's making it sound wolfy and not defined no because there's any combination of those knobs gonna make that any better no you can try I don't know what they do [Music] [Music] [Music] can you flick me between the electric mistress the elect lady and the long amp yes just briefly [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and just for good measure [Music] interesting so what I'm hearing here elect lady is doesn't have the fidelity don't the Hartman is a super strong sound but actually doesn't sound much like the mistress know so it's a different thing it's a different thing the long amp sounds like the mistress and it's got the volume benefit that the Hartman brings it's got all that top-end clarity that the mistress has got but it gets rid of that volume drop okay that was dirty sounds oh it's dirty sounds okay so clean sounds actually before we move on to that why every time we feature the mistress somebody usually comments thanks by the way for all your comments we really appreciate them apology from from me for not answering very many last week I was at IKEA so I def Dan stepped in and did a load but you know we try and answer loads of comments and questions and but IKEA IKEA won last week when you walk into IKEA hmm it's like you know we talked about long logarithmic scales in decibels yes logarithm the scale of pain and time yes so you literally walk through the door and you bit your watch says you've been in there one minute but you've been in there three hours yeah well I have a very strict like so I say to my wife we're going to Ikea that's fine I have to have a meatballs then you've got two hours you have me for two hours and I care and you can spend that time any time that you like you can't even get up the escalators in two hours but at two hours after two hours I'm heading to the checkout with whatever we've got and that's it we're done because that's what I just can't do any more than that so we planned forget everything and that's all good I drove there realise that stuff we wanted to buy wouldn't fit in the car it's dinner on your app on your mobile phone you can hire a van from there right big key code I Drive from solitaire from my house to Ikea pick up the van drive from Ikea to my house Aaron 10 and then drive the fan back to Ikea and my car home man so you was driving for four hours that doesn't include any shopping it was I think more like five and a half in the car Oh brutal and four in IKEA there's nine and a half hour a day what's the ten days it took me to film everything plus the three and a half hours to go back and exchange of stuff that wasn't right oh man yeah I can't do it IKEA ate my comments all right last week okay it's it's okay that was my tangent I've got your back right so clean the clean sound so like the difference they're gonna introduce this other guitar which I had at the beginning of the video Torre Carreras okay okay so Andy Summers used his wishes in a different way he David Gilmour had the range basically cranked so really slow movement but across a really full you can see whereas any summers basically had the range turn like not completely off but really low and it's basically a really like a subtle like a filter you hang on what does the range do again in the ring so the range is the sweep that the frequency range across the sweep of the flanger so Gilmour had a bigger suite yes and summers had a narrower right narrow yes so yes so yeah Andy was up here ah quick little aside so people would see the David Gilmour settings of his alleged mistress like this never once a oh okay so he basically had his knob set at 11 o'clock you know 10 between 2 10 11 o'clock the thing on their mistresses though is that the start position on all these knobs is different yeah the start position on the right is here and they do nishes here alright the start position on the range is here huh basically so at one o'clock and finish it's here at 11 o'clock the position on the color starts at what's that quality bought a stock starts at four o'clock finishes there at two so when you see that now look I know that this so if you look at the where the things are marked yes one missing right that's right and that's the start and end point yes so you got this yep start point end point but why can't you just turn it down to there take the novel off and put that there because it's one louder ah shut up show you why the knobs they used on these I've got the yeah so they'll only fit you cut in other words you can't change the position of them so is there a reason that the pots are mounted in that way inside yes there is because the pots on either side they have bent over I'd say it's a yeah so that's why it's yeah that's the best example of yeah we've made it sorry it's gonna stay like that okay we need to how can we get around this yeah let's just carry on yeah so anyway that's that's why you see everyone says it guys okay that's where he assess it so and you'll see like on the on the apartment here that is basically the same settings as that yeah so if you said all that to 11 o'clock it wouldn't sound the same exactly exactly oh no interesting I've learned something okay so what the end of summers thing is he basically reduces his range down to about there so now with a clean sound now the diner comp is also very important for this that's an original 1974 one which is basically the same one that he used and then we put the mistress on and you get this so it's just really subtle but you hear that sort of frequency sweeping [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's just a one it's at one little delay here [Music] that was that was better than Gilmore I've gotta say well yeah I'm just that's you know I'm not to be honest I've never played Gilmore before and I want to tell me I'm not being critical got closer to that sound though yeah absolutely cuz everyone lists the stuff that Gilmore use yeah whatever I plug that stuff you know literally nothing yeah not even nearly you know because it doesn't sound like a big muff to me even though we all know that it is hmm anyway but he's got yeah please got EQ and all that sort of stuff and oh and he's you know one amps got one thing and the other hands got another as David bloody hero more so you know the thing with the mistress in for that heavy sounds for me it's just it's that bit of movement that it gives regardless of anything that you know and Vanya I've only used opium as example yeah if somebody famous have used it but it's just what it does is it just gives it that little bit of movement is it actually shelving bottom end or is that just the Lawson volume now can hear it's well yeah it's the Lawson volume if we had that and we turn the amps up yeah it's it's all still there so is you can hear it in the other ones that have got the volume compensated it's just because it's quite a big volume job yeah it is problematic in fact it's just why you would use the pre and post game in G the whole reason yeah that very pedal was the whole reason that from the very first switcher we had the compensated volume so you could turn your mistress up exactly exactly because that's have another huge effect on what the amps doing as well absolutely yeah absolutely yeah yeah yeah so that's enough that the most important thing with that is that drop is enough to pull you out of the mix and how did he cope with it then did he just I think he had a queues and things on either side and right yeah okay so that's the that's the mission of the clean sounds will set these up so all I'm going to do again is reduce the rate yeah just to clarify on the alidium original mistress is called the range that on a full range and here it's called the depth and this is the range so okay - range is depth yeah right duesenberg Julia knew for now we saw it on the Doozer boats now yeah it's got these new pickups yeah which we'll hear in a minute and we'll do top I think it's out more in another video maybe but I figured it might sound quite nice for the clean some clean stuff nice okay I play some chords yeah yeah you can play some you can place better chords so this switch turns this stuff on and off yeah this switch switches these from single coil to a humbucking mode I believe okay [Music] you [Music] [Music] groovy twist through that yes I just on an off are they yeah so all I do I'll leave the diner come on [Music] you [Music] the harmless got a mid-range to it yeah that's it's really cool but it doesn't it's not like the mistress it's last thing I want to try is I'm one of I'm gonna boost the Apple of the mistress because for me it's fairly clear that the one that sounds most like the mistress is the lung yet but by quiet quite a long way it's got still has all the top there yeah the other two don't sound like it at all no but what I want to do is I'm gonna I'm gonna boost the output of the mistress and see how close it gets to the Misha sweaters let because it's really difficult to tell because every time I kick the miche's on oh yeah just make such a difference yeah I mean and when I say it doesn't burn the other two don't sound like it that's not in a bad way the mistress would drive me crazy yeah I couldn't deal with that so I would choose the Hartman everyday for that like boosted thing but it doesn't sound like it so as you say yeah yeah okay so what I've done is I've set the the long app and the mistress up to sound similar but I've boosted the mistress show that the volumes a certain volume is the same thing that's occurred to me while we've been doing this is again because everything when you're dealing with loudness and frequency the reason that one of the reasons the Hartman sounds so middly is because it's pushing yeah the amps in a particular frequency yeah this sounding louder with the more volume so it's not it might not be radically differently eq'd but because of the volume difference that's making a massive massive thing yeah massive thing okay so um yeah just so clean mistress [Music] you [Music] [Music] that's me confusing the phaser and a plunger debate again as that was all phase I wasn't it yeah nice though this that the top end thing for me you know it's because it's all the top ends all there in the rocks and that's everything else is sort of overly filtered yeah I mean the rock sound certainly sounds most like the the mistress is here where we sat one final thing we haven't actually talked about all the way along when you first when we first looked at the electric mistress you said that you like to run it before overdrive yes and it's that always I always run it before overdrive what I've done today is I've run after because this is the way that most people do most people do it so big and the difference is more pronounced running it after right can we hear I don't know one of them before and after yeah yeah sure just to just to finish off okay so what we'll do let's hear okay stick with us on for now so I'll put that back to and almost anything so we will have seven so let's have the Mudhoney which is in two so what we're going to have them on honey and the rocks and on together for is going to have the rocks and after the overdrive and five is going to have the rocks and before the overdrive awesome good that's that's the beginning of our own [Applause] they go there to collect noise it was rainy night and March actually it's April now John had just descended his horse and the Badlands of Minnesota right so this is with the flanger after [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] awesome was that fun yeah it was a pleasure was it yeah quick thing yeah the I just quickly show you the reason I like to set my flanger before the average right well you're probably not using an overdrive like that oh you know but if you see if I've got did Mudhoney start with this if I put the flanger into the overdrive it doesn't fundamentally change the sound to put the flanger after it it fundamentally changes everything so you know it's a subtle thing not yeah not once you're talking volume and gain it's not so absolutely yeah anyway I'm um what do you think I've given my opinion by a jazz chord ok very good yeah well as you know flagging not my world at all I don't know how to use it it's such a cool sound but you got to pick your moments I think I just I think I would know where to use a phaser maybe yeah but yeah as you know I'm never big on modulation effects really right but you know clearly that one sounds most like that yeah to me yeah and actually should be saying this better than that in my opinion because all the problems with that in terms of the dropped level that's got magic and I think if you were in the studio or you were you know just why I want to keep it I want to keep it for best yeah because you can set the sound around the pegs and you can make the other louder and you it's not like you're switching it in with loads of other pedals but live to play nice on a pedal board not least that it's the size of it yeah paint-filled 18 volts on a mini jack right okay so how was it allowed powered not a 12 sister 9:12 great all the others are to the elect lady in the Hartmann yeah is that hardly made anymore no okay and and finally not finally one more question that's just crossed my mind how does this differ from something like a boss bf2 yeah they're great they're classic flanger but they just this sits in its own space bf2 you know it's quite a lot of flanges that sound like that the electric mistress really sits there on its own right well well I've loved it like I said this has been a personal thing mixa mixa gonna love you for the ride but i am you know the other thing that Roxanna is fantastic and I've used it glad you actually use it on that recording that we did yeah you know I've used that for a long time recording we did with Universal Audio which should see the light of day before too much longer no but I'm yeah I you know I'm delighted with the rock sound I think it sounds fantastic and the Mudhoney not only sounds oh man spectacular awesome it's so good yeah well done T race brilliant okay guys we'll hear more of this as well in in coming videos yeah when we're familiar territory yeah it made very cool anything and he's one of
