A Dream Chaser turned into Apollo 8 and then to Apollo 11 for some reason...

here we are in Kerbal Space Center I do have this out still the dragon to abort I made that video earlier this week released this video about yeah and in time for tomorrow then redirect everyone that's a great idea do a livestream with me adding commentary to tomorrow that's really funny Oh launch the dreamchaser that's a good idea we're gonna launch a Dream Chaser today after we do this launch abort for fun because why not I'm gonna put this down here so you can see the fuels and things so yeah if you were familiar I did do a video about the launch abort system of the Dragon 2 capsule and here's how it works three two one hip hoop it's passively stable because of this giant trunk here makes it stable and that's a very good thing and then yeah you can just kind of notice how it just stays pointed in the right direction and the cool thing is a suit the second you eject the trunk which we'll do in a second but I'm trying to keep I wanted to see if we can get out to the ocean from here this isn't looking too good so far what do you think I'm trying all right we're gonna eject now notice that oh yeah here we go notice it always goes heatshield first that is a passive that's just how the truncated cone shape of a capsule like this it just wants to go heat shield first um I don't think we're gonna quite make it to the ocean this would be a bad abort not good not might need to add another section of crew cabin like this sure looking about like that it also has these bulgy bulgy sides that's don't ever say that to someone that's sensitive about their their weight you have some bulgy side I don't know we're just gonna try not only as a single Center let's see let's do a little little tiny there we go something like that because it does just have a single single out like thing in the back and that's actually its docking port believe it or not the docking port is in the back of the vehicle but you know what is the back in space you know what I mean that's the question is what is oh look at that that's cool dreamchaser next look how tiny it is compared to the space shuttle oh here we go so it just has two engines outboard like that leave it like a.j tens or something maybe not AJ tens all right let's uh okay so let's just docking port this baby boy I have not even looked at this update in Kerrville yet I don't even know what's new I'm gonna pull up dreamchaser over here so I'm still looking at it because I that I because I'm not good enough to just do it willy-nilly okay so stub knows in time let's man I'm gonna do this actually especially charting to keep it kind of small will be surprisingly difficult like if we want it to look anywhere like what it should probably look like it will be surprisingly hard let's try something bets on things I I would not personally bet on SLS ever technically find it I Celeste can't wouldn't fly to Mars it could sure probably send an Orion capsule to Mars but that's it would need to do a whole like thing it has to be connected to other vehicles and building some kind of big giant space tug and a whole infrastructure to get out to Mars so that being said I don't think technically SLS won't really fly to Mars like that really per se yeah this is gonna be really weird I don't know what I'm doing here but if they could if let's reframe the question as instead of will be a far go to Mars let's just say who will get to Mars first like SpaceX or you know or NASA I guess even though NASA will probably be directly helping SpaceX to get to Mars because I don't think SpaceX is getting to Mars alone it's gonna take a whole bunch of people and a whole bunch of help from all over the world in order to get to Mars actually this might this might work ok so I I I do think there's potential for the launch vehicle that goes to Mars being like the VFR variant or whatever it's called starship super heavy because they're literally building it with that purpose in mind ok look at this it's kind of the Uglies looks like there's like a bird that has a nose kind of like this some weird weird beep thing ok no I messed it all up I'm gonna go like this again and I'm gonna put different ones key on here you'll see what I'm doing maybe it won't maybe I won't even see what I'm doing maybe I'm blinded by the light so yeah I don't know I don't that's a hard one to answer because things change so much in the aerospace industry all the time that it's almost not worth like really putting too much weight on current vessels and stuff because stuff just changes all the time look how much be a far slash starship super-heavy has changed in the past three years over at two years really since it came out I mean it's still a very fluid thing things change all the time in the aerospace industry so it's almost I mean I'm not saying that your questions invalid because it's a great question but it's just not really worth speculating too much until we actually get closer to seeing Hardware built SLS has a lot of hardware built VFR they have an engine at least they do have an engine they have they're working on getting the fuselage stuff kind of coming together but with cool space flight hardware so when when you're working on stuff that has been cancelled and is no longer in existence and there's very little footage the next best thing you can do is just animate things so that's what I've been working on it is a lot of work a lot of work especially as I'm not very good at it but I'm getting better spending a lot of you know a lot of time just trying to hone that in to make the best content I can at the end of the day I think that's what matters most good high quality content hopefully high-quality I try at least and obviously I'm gonna struggle moments like these no there we go staging please okay now we're going to make a helicopter kind of thing to lift this thing up and perform a drop test now this is obviously we're gonna need to be starting the crap out of this because otherwise this is gonna fall apart immediately something like this and now we're just gonna throw one of these babies up on here is that the is that the five meter this is five meter oh yeah okay now we're getting somewhere this is what I'm talking about here how much thrust to weight ratio do we have how do you get all of them to all the details thrust weight reach at 1.5 that should be good enough more struts you're right this is not going to end well all right let's just make sure that we have plenty of thrust so we'll do this and plenty of I want to make sure this thing has plenty of of control too because it's probably gonna be all sorts of wonky okay I think we're ready drop test drop test here we come so just in order to get it safely off gonna just spam the crap out of this with all of these little RCS things this will help it so it doesn't rotate around too much but that should help a lot actually just having the center of mass straight on top of the center of lift and just for stability purposes I am gonna fire flows engines first okay let's try this again oh yeah center of lift and center of mass well there we go let's see if this is any better just fire up these engines here we go oh look at this oh you know what I should be doing guys this is what I should be doing duh duh duh duh duh let's see this is what we're gonna do we are gonna control from here oh yeah this is I'm going to hold radial out so that the thing just wants to hold exactly in this orientation and my thrust let's get my thrust to weight ratio just over one exists oh yeah I knew it I knew we could do this we are what is that it's just a piece of a falcon 9 rocket no big deal alright we are going to raise this thing up to the altitude we need we did line up the center of thrust with the Dream Chaser with the engines off we did that last time in the SPP okay so this helicopter is basically taking us where we need to go it is also kind of melting a good portion of our spaceship maybe I should have pushed these out a little more if those blow up I'm gonna be a little bit upset just a little bit how hard should we take this like 3,000 meters or so give it enough time to you know we're at least getting out of the thick part of the atmosphere oh no don't overheat though that's the only thing I don't want you to do oh man yeah I'm loving this it's fighting really hard right now to maintain its pitch good thing we have all that RCS also I should probably think about burning off some of this fuel soon because that will be it'll come back and empty probably should have thought of that I am gonna just kind of light this up a little bit here I don't actually help rid of that a little bit of problem was having to so I also better get rid of this before it's out of fuel so I can fly away oh is it pulling from well it might be draining from here that's great okay here we go I'm actually gonna light up the ends real quick and let go here we go we are falling but we don't want to be doing that anymore okay time to fly all arrow see if this thing can fly dream chase it do you have it in ya Hey Wow it's pretty stable actually considering we didn't once even take a look at our center of lift and center of mass this is surprisingly stable okay trying to roll it over here it does not want to roll very much that's an issue maybe I should make us that this also includes roll because I think I turned it into just yaw things are exploding no big deal look at this guys we might have actually built a dream chaser my dreams of Brie are being pursued I'm chasing them I'm chasing my dreams and I'm loving it Wow try and do another quick flip wow this thing is surprisingly nimble okay we are gonna miss we're gonna go right off this runway here hold on to your butt's we're gonna be landed probably ditching this thing down in the ocean but you know sometimes you just got to do what you had to do I'm nervous that it's glide is awful falling out of the sky like a wet diaper like I said it has no lift hmm well thanks knock well the people didn't die look there's some in here still so that's they're buried inside do this I'm just gonna tuck a few of these in here and we're also gonna add another just double these up so we have just a little more there we go that seems reasonable these as well these 150 this thing we want that roll in there as well I'm gonna real quick take this off and measure our center of lift in our centers okay interesting especially wait when this is empty these will be empty okay that does move forward that's good that should be stable the problem is do we have enough lift really that's the that's the real question and actually just for this test flight I'm gonna go ahead and total delta-v we are going to do perfectly fine I think this oil this should make it to space now hope the problem here isn't fuel it's our insanely low thrust-to-weight ratio and you're right we probably should have at least like emptied this you know what that rocket needs parachutes maybe those SRB should have had some parachutes yeah we're not even gonna need a throttle down for any kind of max Q regime or anything because this thing is just painfully slow yeah the the the biggest issue here is our thrust-to-weight ratio is so low that we really might just be doing ourselves a huge disservice here that might be if this fails it's because the thrust-to-weight ratio is too low the Atlas 5 doesn't always have for SRBs the Atlas 5 has 0 to 5 SRBs it what is how is the dream cheese gonna launch on that dreamchaser Atlas 5 I'm pretty sure it's just a like a 5 to 2 don't tell me it's launching on a five five one all right it might oh my gosh it's on a five five - oh we're starting over it is launching on a five no n22 is n to choose for the just for the Starliner this thing yeah is going a full-blown you're right guys it is a five to two and we kind of have dual engines so yeah sorry SRB is solid rocket booster that's a good thing I probably shouldn't assume assume that everyone unlike me four years ago I should assume that probably some people also don't know so yes SRB means solid rocket booster the solid rocket boosters were the things that we had on the sides of the satisfied vehicle and we jettisoned this is gonna be about right guys we still have nine hundred meters per second in this upper state or in this first stage Wow I don't like the idea of launching them inside a fairing though that kind of makes me nervous they wouldn't do that in real life if this were ever to become a crewed vehicle it will it will not have a fairing on top of the dreamchaser I'm just nervous the Dream Chaser doesn't seem to have much of an abort scenario for crew that's one of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of it for people I think for cargo it's gonna be awesome and maybe as a return vehicle it'd be awesome okay here we go booster so first fairing Oh God well looks like we took care of that already and let's light up this upper stage we have 3,000 meters per second in this thing okay that's too much like factually speaking that's just actually too much so we're gonna have no problem getting into orbit let's man afraid I'm gonna fly it down just a little bit okay well ladies and gentlemen looks like captain speaking there it looks like we're gonna have no problem if we could have we should have tried landing the Atlas 5 that's what we really should have done we're gonna take this thing up to 300 meters Apogee now we're gonna coast get into our Coast phase here I then do so right now if you look at the map you will see our Apogee our highest point or apoapsis is 300 some 300 thousand meters or 300 kilometers our lowest point if we were to not do a burn up here we would fall back into the atmosphere the atmosphere on kerbin is about 70 thousand meters so this is 38,000 so we'd start to hit the atmosphere somewhere around here and we would descend but we're trying to get this baby into orbit so let's get it up here we're gonna just go up to the highest point then we're gonna rely our engines here by speeding up at our highest point that will lower our that will raise our lowest point by speeding up on the pro grade vector so facing forward facing towards our direction of travel so here we go we're gonna flip it down Oh funny fast and in 22 seconds will be at our Apple apps is where we'll relight up those engines and kick ourselves into a perfectly circular ish orbit so here's our 40,000 we want to raise this up to 300 as well so here we go in about three two one I'm gonna go a little early so notice that our lowest point now is raising we'll give this baby out to 300,000 and then we'll cut and right yeah good enough 302 by 301 I am very happy with it all right dreamchaser welcome to orbit turn on your lights let's have a little mini party quick say hi to all your friends and family back home I forgot that we have more crew cabin down here with no one in it yeah Wow Wow well we're in space we have enough Delta VD we could probably take this thing out to the moon literally and back why don't we do that we're gonna do Apollo 8 dream chaser style since it's you know Apollo 8 time [Music] and we want our free return trajectory like this I don't know if this is rated to come back from the moon or not but we're gonna find out oops so if we do this right you can get real darn close to the moon and the moon will slingshot us back the question is if we do this right was the kind of that the key to that success change our inclination a little bit looks like we're a little wonky maybe we should let me set this as a target we should straighten out our inclination first actually so that's where you can see we're a little bit off axis here we can fix it right here so is this gonna increase or decrease the we need to go up or down looks like you need to go down okay so we need to do about a 35 meter per second burn I'm gonna go ahead and point that way and we're gonna just do a quick little three-second burn just flatten out our inclination so we're perfectly aligned with the moon that way we won't miss our landing so we'll be able to come back into Kerbal space enter no problem and oh look at that perfect okay this will make it easier to get nice and lined up with the moon nice and flat right around the belt we don't want any of that whim Wham [Music] yeah find a KSP mod that makes the earth flat that's funny that would be amazing actually I would love to see a Kerbal space like Kerbal space flight him Van Allen belt rest in peace now Van Allen belt the funny thing about the Van Allen belt is a it's you're flying through it for such a little amount of time and B it's it's a it's kind of exactly a belt you can actually go like around it it's not like a sphere it's not a whole orb around the entire planet so they the you know the Apollo engineers had to figure out where it was thin and where is manageable to fly through it and you know you're only exposed to high radiation for a very short period of time okay so gonna do a full minute burns that means we're gonna want to burn at about what is that 40 seconds 35 seconds 40 seconds okay here we go getting ready for that burn we do have enough delta-v to make it out there and back yeah yeah plenty okay plenty actually we have 2500 to slow down oh here it comes though you would have to slow down and do a a burn on basically right here at the periapsis of the moon which would be 270 we're going to fly to 270 2000 meters away from end up with a lot more delta-v all together look at that yeah so we're increasing the amount of Delta V in this stage by filling it up while draining this one then we can ditch this heavy tank and those engines instead of just aimlessly pushing around some engines that are perfectly fine okay now we have tons of Delta V we could probably just land on the moon bye-bye thank you kick stage you
