good morning i am miranda this is my dog nala right now we are backpacking near staheke in washington and i thought that i would take this day to show you the day in the life of a backpacker let's get started this is my show gosh darn so the trail that we're on right now is called the chelan lakeshore trail and it's a 17-mile trail that goes from prince creek up to staheken which is like a tiny mountain town that you can only get to by ferry or by hiking yesterday we did 10 miles now we're at moore point the area where we are is right on lake chelan and it's like absolutely gorgeous so we make some breakfast make some coffee and then break down and start hiking that's all good there are so many skeet skeets in here get the f out little skeeter now i am ready to start my day yeah thank you i'm gonna go grab my bear canister make some breakfast dude i'm so hungry great you the map down here is prince creek which is where we were dropped off and then this is tohekin where we're heading we're camping at this huge campground here so we're gonna break down camp and then hike these seven miles we'll hike kind of like you can see down this ridge line and then we'll be along the actual lake check out this lake oh god and here's the crew rainer is my producer that's me he does stuff that's important why are you here again this is chelsea tell me he's a videographer chelsea also hiked the pct so if you think that i'm not legit then just pretend like you're watching for chelsea we're gonna filter some water oh my gosh it's so warm in the sun come on doglet i'm just gonna filter two liters so this is a squeeze style bottle filter although i did just bring a hole in it like last time i used it but i'm realizing it's a lot worse than i thought it was gosh i wonder if i should maybe like patch it damn like a backpacker i gotta fix it sometimes i feel like this is sort of inevitable it's like i've been really lucky with gear not breaking oh wow yeah look at that it's like totally separated how i'm i'm like pretty sure this happened is that there was still some air in here when i sealed it up and i tried to just squeeze all of the air out of the bag but like the filter's not designed to squeeze air out it's designed to squeeze water out this is tenacious tape it's like a super sticky waterproof gear tape it's stickier than duct tape so annoying why oh god i'll be so annoying i'm putting this big piece on because the top was still kind of wet it wasn't really sticking so it's okay it's okay fine do the best we can don't wear her out she's got many miles to hike all right let's go i really hope this tape holds enough to filter some water my only concern is that like i don't get any unfiltered water into my bottle yeah it's definitely still leaking this is another good reminder to always bring back up purification great water is filtered backpacking is fun so before i break down camp i actually wanted to show you a couple things nemo was nice enough to send me this disco 30 sleeping bag i slept so well in this sleeping bag and they also sent me this pillow this is like a pillow pocket that is underneath the hood like on the sleeping bag this is the filo elite people recommended this pillow to me for years and i just have never gotten one but sleeping on this and having it like stay in the hood and not move around was so comfortable last night does anybody want to feel this yeah anybody want to just like so comfy the tent that i'm using is the nemo dagger two so it's a two person tent and it's incredibly spacious basically vertical sidewalls tons of pockets oh and then i also have this sit pad this is the chipper from nemo honestly i don't know why i haven't bought one of these sooner it's made from leftover pieces of foam from other like sleeping pads and products that they make super handy little thing let's break down camp hello will you pack up yours actually it's really nice to have such a big tent because i can actually like pack up in the tent [Music] i legitimately woke up mad that i slept so well oh spider that's my favorite part great no what you're doing you ready to go backpacking are you yes you are ready put your backpack on of course you are you're so good so i've had a bit of a hard time balancing weight in the past with her pack but this time what i've done is she was carrying her food in like two separate stasher bags on either side yesterday and now that she's eaten like one bag of food i just separated today's food into two different ones so she's got food on this side and food on this side and then she's got treats i think she has over here and then oh yeah she's carrying my carrots on the other side and if i have to adjust it during the day and like move this thing around a little bit i can feeling good okay let's do it this is a trail where she has to be on leash the whole time this hands-free leash is really helpful all right pop let's go come on so i'm all packed up let's get on the trail ready let's go come on oh i'm gonna go to the bathroom before we leave oh wait let's do a bathroom tour this is a really fancy bathroom because this is like a very well established campsite there is hand sanitizer let's head inside it does not smell it has this nice acoustics to it if you're an opera singer it's toilet paper which is really cool mind-boggling cleanliness it definitely gets like like a 10. ambiance maybe a seven because it's got this colorful pack out garbage sign with security gets like a nine just like a really nice secure deadbolt on there okay i have to pee so right all right nala here we go this trail is so neat so interesting across this cool bridge so moore point was where we camped last night where we're headed tonight the view is amazing you can just like look at all of this this entire area burned in 2001 what was called like the rex creek fire so now the area is more prone to flooding and a lot of like wind storms it's kind of an interesting thing to be hiking through come on dude what's this what's this oh spider webs nala hates going through these plants poor things this is so amazing lamb's here makes really good toilet paper this is so beautiful oh you want treats bumblebees under my ear what i want to know is do we ever go down shade hallelujah water break drinking what's in there i'm gonna take a look at the map so we've gone almost two miles not quite this is where we came from i'm guessing that we're about to cross this like creek i think and also we're like headed up again that makes sense this is a total of like six miles or seven miles to here that would probably be about two so i'm guessing we're like right around there more up you ready for this pups we go up a lot let's do it this hike is no joke in the heat we will forge on and up [Music] i think this is the highest point on our trek today we've got about two miles we're stopping at three for lunch she's ready to stop now so we're just gonna go on down the trail a little bit and stop at about 20 minutes and have some food we're going down woo yay down we've got a ticket to lunch i'm just eating carrots so we stopped for lunch we've gone about three miles which is uh like almost halfway to our campsite for tonight it's taking us quite a long time actually just because we're like moving really slowly the dog is tired i am tired and it's hot that's like the big thing i think it's the heat we're all just like kind of feeling it from yesterday nala and i are drinking a lot of water oh yeah i got a little blisty i didn't clean my legs off though so they're like very clean now these horse flies or bonkers the pack just got heavier because i'm carrying all this bag now i'll start my watch so we finished lunch and we are going to head to our next campsite i know we get three and four miles from here and according to the map it looks to be fairly level let's go [Music] look how clear the water is [Music] i would like like like a gazpacho soup i love the gazpacho i wonder if you can dehydrate gazpacho yesterday there was definitely way more elevation gain and my calves were super sore and so were the bottoms of my feet which i'm pretty sure is because i was wearing my trail runners which are zero drop and i'm like used to wearing those only at day hikes not backpacking so i stretched a little bit last night i'm feeling a lot better um i mean the trail is absolutely gorgeous but i can definitely tell that i'm getting tired and so is this little girl and looking at myself in this camera i think i'm also getting sunburned oh gosh you just saw another up section [Music] i'm enjoying using this map i like being a matte person looks like we stay at the same elevation with just like a little up and down but yeah we're i mean we're close only another mile and a half and we should be at camp which is fantastic and we'll be a little bit earlier in the evening than normal yay more up just a little bit upside [Music] down i'm gonna take a short shade break and give her some water now then is that good i just found a tick on nala um i need tweezers someone help me um in my backpack there should be a dog first aid kit on top i'm just gonna read what it says about removing text really quick that's okay you're doing so good almost there baby girl we're almost there you yes nice i hate you no you you're the best maybe i'll just put this thing in this here yeah just keep your head down i know i'm almost done it's okay is that enough using enough mom okay that's it we're done you're a piece of bug i hope you die and you know what you're gonna die are you ready to keep going yeah let's do a tick check tonight oh that's frigid wobbly oh my gosh an amazing place to be especially because we're going down and flat come on puppy we're almost there let's go i'm not leaving you now we're in the north cascades national park oh my gosh there's a bunch of bear lockers wow prince creek 17.2 miles here we are [Music] wow how often do you get to sit down on a picnic bench after backpacking we just got to camp this trail is incredibly popular here in washington and generally during the like true backpacking season these campsites are full you have to book them ahead of time because we're kind of in the shoulder season we have the campsite completely to ourselves there's like nobody in town and i thought we were going to be a little farther from the town of stehekin but as it turns out the ferry is just like a 10 or 15 minute walk around the corner and so i'm gonna set up my tent here make some food on the earlier side and just kind of like relax my dog is toast i'm gonna take my shoes off that's what i'm gonna do right now just forget this whole thing i'm gonna take my shoe off i washed my legs in that creek earlier that crick my dad says wash it in the creek glistening in the in the sun i just put on my camp shoes these are amazing these things weigh like almost nothing plus they look cool i'm gonna set up my tent over there oh it's upside down boom cool the kind of cool thing about this nemo tent the rain fly has this little like connector piece this little loop that goes onto the body of the tent my old tent had this like grommet system and so the problem was that like sometimes the tent poles would pop out of the grommet while you're trying to set it up and with this the tent poles actually like sit in there really well so this is my sleeping pad that i've talked about before this is the nemo tensor i love this sleeping pad and the best part about it is that it comes with this pump sack which makes blowing it up really easy [Applause] all right is this sleeping like pretty like not that that should matter but i really like it pillow matches my sleeping bag but nala right here oh come on in here pepper come here now come on come here good girl wow so funny she's so tired and that she's like won't she wants to line the dirt now that the like basics are in i'm going to go ahead and cook some food and eat some dinner great let's eat i'm going to have this three sister stew which is one of my favorite backpackers pantry meals i don't often eat pre-made dehydrated meals but when i do i eat i ate backpackers pantries three sisters two two and a quarter cups of boiling water okay it's definitely dirt in the pot look at me my battle scars this one's really good my water's boiling all right 6 58. it'll be done at 7 13. this is my least favorite part of the day because like what can you actually do in 15 to 20 minutes i feed my dog play game of cards it has been one minute some food come here yeah all right sit good go ahead oh you're so very good it has been 20 minutes yeah 20 minutes i made it um it's a little bit colder so i put my sweater on it's time to eat some dinner yes my mouth is watering i'm so hungry i didn't even chew i just swallowed that oh my god this is so good three sisters do so i'm gonna finish my dinner pack up my bear canister and finish organizing my tent i'm gonna sleep like a rock i slept so well last night so i'm looking forward to curling up in that sleeping bag so it was nala now that my tent is all organized i thought i would give you a little bit of a tent towards let's go inside this tent has a ton of different pockets so i've put my headlamp in this diffusion pocket and then like my glasses and my phone and stuff go down there so they're like right at hand when i get up in the morning i also keep my buff up near my sleeping bag as well because what i'll do is keep this either around my neck or i'll put it on my head so i can like cover my eyes or cover my and ears back here i have my pack my pack doesn't have anything smelly in it all of that stuff is in my bear canister out of the tent then at the foot of my bed my stuff sack stuff sack full of all of the different stuff sacks that my stuff was in also down here i have my um first aid kit just in case i need them in the middle of the night in the very bottom of my sleeping bag i have my sleep socks i know this might seem kind of weird but i call them special socks and i love having a pair of clean like warm socks to put on when i go to sleep so i'm not using the same socks i've been hiking in and then my base layer i'll also put on a like tank top or a clean shirt because i don't want all that sweat kind of like sitting next to my skin nala's set setup this is her sleeping bag from ruffwear i think that's it that's my little my little tent tour say bye now [Music] i just have to say that backpacking to a campsite that has trash cans and flushing toilets and faucets with soap it's just like otherworldly i cleaned my face can you tell probably not i washed my hands so much dirt came off my hands now i can take my contacts out this is just that was great this is great this campsite's the best [Music] so i am here in my tent it is after 9 p.m now so i'm gonna head to sleep i've got my light in that little like diffusion pocket there my dog is currently in my sleeping bag with me today has been an awesome day of backpacking i was really just like blown away by the beautiful views a little stressed with my like water filter breaking and then obviously nala having ticks on her but overall just like an absolutely beautiful trail not too many miles see you at 7 a.m tomorrow good night i'm gonna kill that tick later good morning it is now 7 a.m which means that we have reached 24 hours on trail i'm gonna get up and make some coffee and some breakfast and then hike on out of here so if you liked
