hello everyone I'm Christina dandar of the Potted boxwood and I am so excited to bring you this Chic peak of Carrie Henderson's beautiful Dallas home Carrie thank you so much for having us I'm so happy so happier well okay tell us about this house it's beautiful you're so sweet we're really happy with it I did do the design um and the the build you built and designed this I just want to make sure people understand not only did she design it but she built it but we've really always wanted a Georgian and when we found this lot it was a mid-century Ranch but the trees fortunately have that beautiful symmetry going on so I pulled up and I almost immediately knew that we could turn it into um but these trees are stunning and we'll I'll give you more photos of those later I mean really just a beautiful lot thank you wait are tell us about these pumpkins okay so these are such a fun do at home has these they're heirloom so they look real but Lord willing to last a very long time and they're really reasonably priced oh they're beautiful all right so here we are in the entry oh my gosh I love the floor and a different take on a checkerboard that's right so I I really wanted the George and checkerboard but I remember talking to my my sweet tile guy and I said you know I really want a checkerboard but I'd like for you to just cut them in half and mix them together that way and I made it sound so simple but I'm sure he hated me he did such a great job and I'm so pleased with how it turned out it's really stunning and that um into the way he's too you you told me very fascinating so I built this it was it was a wardrobe and I really loved this cabinet look um so I had my welder weld the base for me and I cut and assembled the the top and then I re-colate it to make it nice and shiny the way I like it so you you did that piece of furniture I did I think people at home their minds are blown because my mind is blown out and that's a Common Thread throughout the home correct you've done you've built and sewn and created a lot of everything that we see I have this desk actually right here at the top on it is from the original house from our house six blocks away it was the one piece we could Salvage and we tore it down it was the vanity and I just loved it so much and I hated getting rid of it so I built this Burl desk around it it's beautiful now here we are and this is a powder bath correct correct this is the shoe longer thistles wallpaper that I just love I would put it everywhere if possible it's beautiful and um the fun art you have great art in this house lots of color we're not afraid of color here and the flooring is amazing too thank you that art is actually a really cool process if you um that the painter you paint on the glass and then they press the piece onto it they press the paper onto it and then the second piece is the residual paint so that's why it's a little lighter oh my how neat now what are we going into next here this is our guest room Our Guest Suite down here is is light and bright we we were able to live with some friends when we built our first house and we loved they were so gracious to have a nice big guest suite and so we tried to recreate that make it a really inviting and cozy space for our guests oh there's so many beautiful details I love the painting above the bed it looks like a familiar artist who does I that one's at home if you can believe it Brenda Bogart is insanely beautiful and they have this beautiful piece foreign you know that you can find a great price on something sometimes it's just so so worth it now I love this bathroom as well the paper is beautiful thank you and you're not like I said this feels very calming and relaxing and then this piece is really interesting this is an amazing story so tell us about this this was a filing cabinet my neighbor across the street was moving and she had this sort of maple color 1970s filing cabinet and I had seen so many cabinets with that beautiful lacquered look in the grass cloth and so I thought you know what I can create that so I um lacquered the the outer and I hand wallpapered the drawers and I love those little ginkgo leaf Bowls the pools are darling where do you find such great Hardware so those actually were from Amazon if you can believe it but Etsy has really great Brands yes that's true um I found a lot of great Hardware suppliers that I just love that have really classic pieces well we're gonna have to get we're gonna have to find those on Amazon I know people are gonna go crazy and I it's the idea of wallpapering a file cabinet seems so daunting to me but you did it and then there's Aaron Feud she's amazing artists we love her so much goodness her ability to use florals but make them contemporaries just totally my jam and the floor again is just stunning okay now tell us where we're coming into next so this is a sitting room this room's kind of been fun because you can see it leads right into our dining room we've been able to have a number of parties where we where I tee off of the main table and can add about 20 more seeds into through this room so this has kind of become a fun extension of the dining room but this is our this is our parlor I don't know if you've seen Pride and Prejudice the new one but there's the partner comes to propose and they're all sitting there kind of sewing my girls and I love that movie and so we call this our parlor because we just love the idea of all of us in here reading and we do we spent quite a bit of time just hanging now Carrie you were talking talking about your girls how many uh how many kids do you have we have four three girls and one boy one little prince of the palace Prince of the palace and they are all you know fairly young yes we have 13 11 9 and eight nine and eight and this is such it's still so livable it's beautiful and thank you these are actually them over here I've got a little nod to all of them oh I love the metal wood frames those are so pretty um and it's a great that's a really tasteful way to display family thank you I love the gallery I actually made those frames because I needed sort of custom size you make friends and I love the little nod to fall it's just starting to feel just a little bit it's starting to feel like fall here in Dallas but this might be my favorite room in the entire home tell us about the dining room I love this this is my favorite room I um it felt kind of bold to do the green and the purple but I am so pleased with it I love a traditional dining room but I wanted to have some fun and contemporary pops um I grew up in Miami so the Palm is a nod Lord I love that look and and yeah we I distinctly wanted to match the wallpaper to the paint and so that's the joy of being the Builder as well I was able to come in with my fabulous painter whom I love and he did all the variations and I was able to put it right next to a piece of wallpaper and verify that it was going to be this beautiful match that ended up coming out honestly it's the perfect match I couldn't imagine the process of um you know trying to formulate it just right but really that looks amazing and that piece of art too is stunning that we just said thank you I painted that in our other house and I love how much it fit in this room and I love all the panels and then the light fixture above the dining table to me that just it adds a pop of grace and elegance this was an antique this one I had to I had to just go old because I needed that original crystal look and we're so happy with how it it ended up even height wise you never know when it's hanging in an antique store right no it really is I mean just the way it's placed and they're pretty plates on the wall everything's just really lovely and what's neat two about this room everything flows together so you have your little parlor and then the dining room and then and then what is this room here it looks like this is Brian's favorite room no I'm kidding we love we love this room so this is our bar and when we actually end up using it more for hosting than you would imagine because we have the service window obviously but when you're coming in the front foyer and you go into the main living room you can be served to drink there or when you're getting food in the dining room you can kind of pop in and grab a a drink I love um it reminds me of the Ballard I love the Ballard it was a little too narrow and I wanted to put two so it didn't fit the Ballard one but this one fit right in the middle and you can see I love Stone so I have lots of variations of slabs throughout the house coffee tables that I that I've made from from slabs and um this one in particular I want wanted to not hide this lab so that open shelving was a great way to expose the back while still having space to put the shell but the glasses great texture too and I love all your Hardware is really thoughtful and now we come into the kitchen which is great tell us about the kitchen process so the kitchen has been is obviously the heart of the family I love this island it's 11 feet long by a little over four feet wide and I found this slap book Matched with another and so you'll see the laundry room Island the island in our Master is these two giant book Matched slabs and this vein as soon as I saw it okay this is it the baby has my favorite the blue going on oh my gosh and so anyway if you really love we kind of built the the kitchen around the island in this lab and we were so happy that that worked and it picks up on the colors too of the wallpaper I mean this is some this is amazing thank you we love that wallpaper it's it's a it's a stream cloth so if you touch it it's really soft but not as bulky as a jute or a grass cloth but I love the colors get a close-up of it here and you continue it into the breakfast room that's right oh this is just a really neat and kind of creative way to display the wine but also it's modern but the wallpaper softens it thank you that was kind of the goal and I love again I love the traditional look and you'll see I found these panels at an estate sale and just had to have them so I toned them down they had the really dark brown edges and so I tone them down with some green satin and I framed them in white and then I made this chandelier this chandelier was black and brown and I just loved I wanted this room to be a little more Coastal and um and so I I hand wrapped that too okay you could see me under a tree outside while I was hanging there so so this was brown because he was brown correct and then you hand wrapped the the dress okay and then kind of wound through here to paint the gold it was made of the gold I just didn't wear the size that I wanted Serena only has a beautiful one it was just it was it wasn't going to be as tall as we wanted okay um so anyway this room ended up being exactly what I wanted just a sweet Coastal traditionally yes because you feel like you're we're gonna go outside in a minute and y'all are gonna see just how stunning things are out there but really I'm just an awe and I love that wallpaper again is continued on the shelving here oh this is my little ladies bar so I you'll see I intend to put a tipping rail I was trying it on for science you guys were seeing the process this is great but this is kind of my some of our family Antiques and some of my silver I would love a ladies bar that sounds really fun to me um oh my gosh this is just really lovely and now we're heading into the pantry Pantry which is a very envious Pantry I mean this is great we made this big it's kind of the idea of a caterer's kitchen we liked we like to have it we like to entertain and so we love having the double ovens in here and the fridge so when we host parties it's very easy for people to have this be home base and then it it leads right into our mud room which we have designated lockers for each of us and if your kids really use the locker oh my goodness I mean we're all competitive soccer soccer we being the kitchen yeah we are not playing soccer um and I and so they come and they drop I mean this room does not always smell the best but it is very much a locker room and it's well used I highly recommend anybody building try to designate spots for all and even just my purse and sunscreen beach bag it's great oh this is okay I'm already in love with just this Breezeway this Breezeway is so fun so we knew we had to do a drive through your garage it goes out the back to our alley and it goes up to the front obviously and it really helps us maximize the space in the lot but in order to do that we kind of had to create this Breezeway which even in the crazy Texas storm we're still able to come out here um this is our cool laundry which as a neat freak I love because you kids can just drop their towels and their swimsuits and even soccer stuff and we don't really ever have to make it inside you don't have to take the wet towel in the size this is absolutely genius and this tile actually on the ground was the original Hardscape that was here there was about 2 000 square feet of it right yes oh and we ripped it all up and then we're able to lay this pattern that I think really helps us even though we need The Hardscape it helps us bring the green and the the shower in there so this room is floor to ceiling tile we love kind of the idea you can hose it off and just have it be pretty industrial though pretty um the tile in there the girls and I hand lay those mosaics because we couldn't find what we wanted you knew we wanted to have the no diving so we kind of got our tiles and and made it work that is so impressive what a fun thing to include your girls right so now we are so proud of that because they remember distinctly kind of exiting off the White Tiles well I mean I love the tile to the ceiling I think that's genius and I don't know why more people don't do it and people do ask if it's wallpapers so it's kind of fun that it has that wallpaper look but it's a lot more durable being in a in a high traffic outdoor-ish space and you're I love your brick and how you use wood on the ceiling here at least once would kind of paneling that's one thing I did notice about George ends they did typically have that um different color which you can kind of do a gray but we love the idea of bringing in the natural wood I think it really softens uh softens the home and this outside area is just I don't like this I mean this really is and I love the dimension and the different levels well we we've been so pleased honestly with 4ks and loving to host we really do want to be the house that says oh great after that dance y'all come over here and and it has it has been that already and we could hope and try to continue to do that over their fears but it's gonna it's gonna really good space for us so far we just finished the outdoor kitchen over there we're really pleased with it and look forward to a lot of thrilling with Aggie football on oh wow oh my gosh I love to like the topiaries out here and The Umbrellas are beautiful thank you it just this is where you want to spend time that's for sure and the weather is turning perfectly so we have our fire pit up there that is plumbed to the gas line and floors and fun fall activities but it looks like two that you have some um come down you're right we do so I really we really wanted to have an open look but I get eaten alive you know if there's one within a mile it finds me so we did we built in and so they closed you can see this area right here and then over at the Breezeway there's there's some steps up to the backyard and it encloses there it's so smart it's really so so smart all right well let's go back inside and keep exploring this beautiful home oh I love this vignette right here thank you I painted that after Israel um I went three years ago right before covid I've always had the hills look like that to me they have just some beautiful color but then also deep deep greens so you paint too you paint sew you wallpaper um and I love to the uh because this whole sitting area tell us about the sitting area so the the gray room is pretty long but we knew we wanted it to feel a little more intimate um and also we we do have a TV hidden behind that picture up there so we wanted to make it functional where you could see a TV but we love having couples over and just have a glass of wine and sit have a little conversation area here and then we have bigger groups we can sit in this bigger area this is of course where we would watch football games and so smart and big rooms can be complicated sometimes because you don't know how to format them and you did it such a unique job with this room like this is uh kind of a normally you'll see a double couch or something along those lines but so I'm really impressed by how you um laid out this room well thank you the the the separate coffee table you know sort of helped us make this an inviting space so that people who sit over here still feel connected but also have their own space to be comfortable this is a slab that was left over from the apartment above our garage when I had that installed and so I had to turn it into a coffee table for me I have this beautiful Restoration Hardware ottoman that I was able to just kind of decide enough the funny thing is is I tried to kind of tweak it I wasn't sure if I had if it was where I wanted it but there's no moving it let's do that again it's beautiful and I'm still so intrigued so there's a TV behind the painting how exactly do we do you watch it so it's a it's actually a really light frame and I have brackets that kind of you can see it kind of has to lean forward a little bit so the brackets just kind of drape over and so when it's TV time we just lift it up and set it down either in front of the fireplace if it's not if we don't have the fire going or we'll just kind of set it aside but we didn't want the room to feel like that was the priority right and most of the time we're not hosting events that that where the TV uses so we that was kind of our way of doing it but I know that the frame TV is a beautiful option for that and I mean I love how you can always have art display well that looks a lot better but okay now where are we now in office this is Brian's office and he um his first office in our old house we called the clothis it was the coat closet that had a window and we turned it into his office so we always joke that every office is an upgrade from the office it um and that painting over there actually he um he hasn't seen it in full so I'll have to let him watch but it's not done yet but it's it's of his family house in Colorado I'm painting that so that's where it will go it's his 40th birthday in October and so I'm working on that one we'll see we'll see if I'm able to get it done we'll have to share it with us when it's finished because I know everyone will want to see um I mean just really talented between I'm just I can't get over that I'm almost in awe of all of the um things you're able to to do on your own here thank you you're very resourceful that's for sure and I love this angle and kind of gets see everything here this was a fun this was a fun angle um I have a beautiful picture of when the house was drywall there were no cabinets and you could just see kind of the window at the end of the of the tunnel and it just was light and Airy and I just knew it was going to have that that bright look that we were going for it's just a very joyful space now what did you do finish wise on your Hardwoods I'm just so this is this is a it's a custom stain um I have done hand scraped which I actually really love um so I I kind of go back and forth this is just a a really nice it's actually not the smoothest finish because I I knew we would have some wear and tear um but I so it has a little bit of texture to it but I just did a custom stain between somewhere between coffee and espresso um it just is really um compliments even all your lightning colors and it's this one is nice to see that thank you I love the lighter look that people are going with I think you can really do a great job with that and then of course there's the black amaryllis which you can always do that I think are just stunning and traditional um this is our family room this is sort of where the kiddos get to host and we have their shuffleboard table over there and this is kind of their their realm we also have a TV hidden behind that painting oh this is great just a great landing and again the more the TV's hidden and I don't blame you because often I bet maybe I don't know did they just forget the team they really do I mean it has to be a distinct effort um and so it's not it's it's definitely it's um it's one of those things that we almost forget about oh now whose room is this so this is Annabelle's we were able to design the upstairs with four cap four bedrooms for one for each of the children so each closet um has a have cabinets built in they're nice walk-in closets there's the bathrooms are all captive and they all have big Windows because our hope is that if this is our forever home they'll be able to come back from college maybe with their kids one day which would be amazing and having their own their own space so that was that was something that my architect really helped um helped with this is my son's room we call his room the tree house because he's up here nestled in the tree he really is the trees in the front yard are just beautiful and of course I'm partial of the Pug on the wall over there we won that at the at the West Dallas event and I was so happy I wanted the pub so badly I wish I would have worked it's so funny I don't even think I saw that there um so Carrie and I do have a connection we love I used to teach at West Allis Community School in Dallas and Carrie and her husband are very involved with the school and um so I just that's our first love that joyful connection for sure such a great school they're doing such straight work it's been such an honor to be even a small part of the lawyers we're fair I know as we in west Dallas are very thankful but this is a great room and I love the the bed here did you make that yeah sweet we um I did want to show you this closet because we I'll show you kind of how light colors look great great the built-ins I don't love dressers if I'm honest I think they can kind of chop up yeah that's exactly right the footprint can get all messed up so each room has a built-in with a shelving above it so one day they could use the shelving for more definitely has his fair share of junk but the the it helps my sanity to have it tucked away and see it all organized and then in here um this bathroom you described this you used a great way to describe this well so this is you're so you're sweet is this what we call our prom bath I I remember sort of extending the dimensions wider and in a little bit deeper because I remember growing up with two sisters having a a bathroom big enough to get ready for prom was was really important so we did the double shower head and we did just a big light bright but we wanted to have it be a space that was hopefully big enough for our girls to get ready together just the three of them or with their friends and this is so smart to make it a wider bathroom especially if you're going to share that's right that's right and we do we do um we have encouraged our girls to share so even though they have four bedrooms right now we um we have these two rooms that I'll show you next this one being one of them um oh this is so sweet it has the bed the different beds and there's two closets so the girls can all have their stuff between these two rooms because our goal is to have them really form sweet bonds when they're young and I think sharing a room is it helps with that my sisters and I really we definitely bonded oh no I think that's amazing and then we have this other room here which is really beautiful this is more teen this is for this is your oldest that's right our oldest and then like I said the girls kind of share but this room we made a little bit more fun with the the sort of Pops of pink and the pillows the linen pillows and I love the lavender wallpaper in her bathroom it's just a little more grown up and hopefully is something that she'll enjoy for a while well I feel like this room will take her you know through college I still would use it so I thought okay no and every room in this home just feels so Lush and Serene you know you have a lot of color going on but it doesn't feel overwhelming or busy thank you I appreciate that I think sometimes when you bring in color it can feel overwhelming and it's good to hear that it doesn't look like a circus and I love the carpeting this I mean um Even in our shoes it is so soft under the foot I love a lot of little carpeting what kind do you know what kind of I do it's a Lifeproof um it's actually just from Home Depot I I have a I'm a pro there and they have all sorts of great options but I love the the pattern the texture it's a low pile but like you said does have that Lush feel no this is absolutely excellent and then this is a neat room I I did a post recently on building tips and this was a big tip that a lot of people thought that um every home should have every new build so what is this this is this is sort of my non-atic Storage storage okay so this has my Shaffer dishes this has suitcases you know you pack for at least we do we pack four trips an hour before we're supposed to leave and you know I think that you don't want to be climbing up in the attic so we have sort of the bed linens for mass for air mattresses suitcases wrapping paper and things like that things that you need to get to a little more often than adding storage it's really so smart and again I love this upstairs Landing living space I bet your girls and your boys are saying the girls that even you know for though I've had a son for eight years oh and the great shelving here now you've you obviously built this whole thing up so you that's right and so one thing I encourage people to do so these are actually prefab cabinets um J and K Cabinetry here in Dallas they do a really great job um so most of my built-in you know my kitchen is is cut there's a lot of places that are custom but all of my built-ins are are sort of the these pre-manufactured that you're able to build and trim around it's a really nice way to get extra storage space so this actually serves as my linen closet it's just so smart it's well I love how tall tall it is you know you normally see short cabinet lots of shelves but it's nicer to be able to hide things that's true okay this we've got to talk about this room this room I do love it's it's it's my realm it's kind of my office meets laundry room and again you can see my nod my banana tree over there I wanted it to feel like a Mediterranean logia just a really outdoor space almost like a patio because that's my favorite place to be um but I have my desk over there in our honorary pet a fish it was doing great and I love okay the floor is I've seen tile like this before but never kind of lost it the glossy was so unique you do you kind of see those in coffee the the concrete tiles that I love but this is unique because it had um that that Sheen to it I I will be honest it had a film on each one that I had to go through and hand peel off so the the gloss came with a cost but it's it's lovely and we're really pleased with how it turned out and again to see those beautiful trees in the front oh my gosh just so pretty absolutely an oasis I would I would be doing a lot of laundry I've been eating you could even get some homework that's right that's right cracks and wrapping and what a treat this is to see and then here we are in this is our Master Suite yes yes and the great view of the pool outside and this also has a really Serene soft feel it this room actually is probably one of the most used rooms in the house especially having lived in the rental while we built our family really just became a sort of one bathroom family so even with all the bathrooms we kind of end up here every day together but um we do love all the natural light and and we love the overlooking the pool it does sort of feel like a nice hotel room which is is kind of fun at the end of the long work day for my husband it's kind of fun to feel like a little bit oh and I love I love how you place the curtains by the tub there and because you can still get those napkins that's right the Privacy wow a great shower this is lovely and I love what countertops did you decide to go with so in here we have chords actually all the bathrooms I did cords um and then downstairs you'll see the residual slab in the master that's a quartzite and then as you saw the bars marble so I love like I said I love mixing stones and um I think they all serve their purpose but I'm at this quartz the veining is so beautiful and it looks just so natural really pretty and this closet is just I mean I think it's the size of my bedroom it's beautiful and thank you the light fixture is amazing and you just again feel like you're in a treehouse it's it's it's fun to to be up up in the trees when you're getting dressed it makes you feel really pretty and fancy this the chandelier actually was from our other house A friend bought our other house from us and she ended up putting a bigger dining room chandelier but we um we were able to get that one back and we thought that would be a really good oh my gosh this has just been such a treat thank you thank you so much I mean I feel inspired I feel like I haven't done enough crafts in my life and but I mean you do it so beautifully in a really high-end way so what a beautiful house and we're just so grateful for this Chic peek Carrie it's my it's my pleasure I really admire what you're doing and I'm so happy to have you here well thanks y'all and um I'll send follow up about a lot of the details we talked about in a post later see you later
