hi everybody my name is Brenda Miller from among Brenda's quilts and bags and you can find me on the web at WWDC what we're going to do today is show you how I'm using my new tiara to a quilting machine and table by babylock to quilt a table runner so it's my very first project and I'd like to work through that with you so this video is meant for all you beginners out there we're a little bit hesitant about starting so I'm right with you and let's just see how it goes so I've got my backing fabric here and I'm using a fleece batting in this case today just because I've got a lot of this on hand otherwise I'd just be using a 80/20 blend up above quote bat and here is my runner one of my designs that we're going to work on and I'm not really even sure how we're going to quilt it we're just going to see how it goes and have some fun with this so look I'll show you how to put your layers together first the first layer that we're going to work with is our backing fabric and I'm placing it on my my dining room table so that it's wrong side up and I've got some masking tape just regular masking tape and what I do if I want to put this on the table so that it's some isn't taunt so tape on one and smooth the fabric out another keep on the other end not catch my corners with the tape not really stretching it off just making sure it's nice and even I'm taking my four corners then I will just tape around the sides sure everything stays in place you can also do this on lower if you like Verona regular table ping-pong table is really good if you have one let's just probably have tape I think okay so that's all nice and smooth and then we want to get our batting and lay that on top and I always just check the batting to make sure there's no odd threads on here that are gonna um kind of show through the top fabric we want that square to the down square to the M a backing no and then lay your your quilt top which is in this case a table measure on top its Reds here give it a bit of order around it a batting end of the backing fabric okay so that's very smooth all right now I'm going to use pins to pin this all down and I've just got straight pins in this case that I'm using and you could use safety pins if you like but because this is a very quick project to quilt I'm hoping I'm using straight pins because I could pull them out easier if this quilt was something that I was going to be quilting over a long period I would use safety pins because the straight pansino might fall out so I'm just taking my my long sturdy pins and starting at the middle I work my way out pinning about every four inches so I've just pinned a line through the center here and next I'm going to pin out this way in across formation now we've got cross formation and then we're going to pin through the four quadrants so we'll start up here to give you an idea how that works so we get about every four inches okay so there's one full quarter pinned and I've got lots of pins around the video exterior and I'm going to go on to pin the other three quadrants and I'm going to remove my tape from the table and take this down to the quilting machine so I'm going to show you how to thread that tiara first of all you've got your thread and you want to make sure that there's no burr on the bottom of the school so that when the thread comes off it might catch and you know the attention problem so this is fine you'll Burson put it on my school and take my thread through the tension guide here then we come to the three hole guide and it's got three holes in it and we start from the top we'll go through the top hole from the back to the front and then bring it down to the next hole without entangling it in the thread above from the back to the front again being careful not to tangle it up and back to the front so let's route all three holes give myself a little extra length here and then we go down through this thread guide here and in place that's right guy now we're going into the tension disks and right in between them we feets your dare and make sure it's right in there and then you snap it into that spring guy which will kind of tug around when you got it in the right place then you want to go through this a strip thread guide it's the big wide metal bar so under in and up to the take-up lever which is the part that goes up and down it has a whole one X so we just thread from the back the machine to the front be sure it doesn't come out of a strip thread guide and there's another thread guide just down here we get ourselves in there and then it's a matter of threading the needle you can use the Tierra machine in either manual mode or in regulated mode I do have the stitch regulator so I'm going to switch it on and I'll just show you how that works so we have the controller here which is all wired up as per instructions and it needs to be turned on after the machines turned on lights are on and then we have this little receiver has a magnet on top it has a switch on the bottom and that turns on starts to blink and it goes under our fabric as we quilt and I'll show you how to use that I'm going to just test my tension here on a scratch it has the same batting I'm using and just a similar fabric so I'll put it under the foot and here's my little regulator I'm going to turn it on starting and it usually doesn't blink when you don't have it of your fabrics above which you do put it under average it usually starts to carry on but I've got some lights here so maybe it's not going to blink for us as much as it normally I want to put it on the side of my work close to where my hands will be either this side or that side never put it behind the Machine okay so we've got our or fiber kind I'm just going to bring the bottom thread up even though you have to do this but this is the whole habit me from using my my regular solution and if I press the needle up and down button it'll kind of tie it off for me so I'll do that a few times and then I can click these threads out of the way I don't have to worry about them kind of getting must up and work I'm J I'm just going to test my tension here and see how things are going up and I'm gonna pull some thread so I can actually get the fabric out from underneath the machine so I just kind of tug here my stuff a little room to breathe my little device off and check that tension it's actually pretty good back to show you the back show you the front ok so I'm satisfied that that's going to work out so the next step is to actually get started on the table runner and I'm a little nervous but see how it goes before I begin I think it's important that I have some idea what I'm going to be doing so I think I'll divide my table runner into the middle section which I'll do with kind of an overall pattern and then it outer border all do something too long just make it stand out a little bit so our just leading through some books on machine quilting technique and I came up with um an idea that is just kind of a lazy Daisy fill so I'm gonna practice it's gonna be puppet and so on okay I've got my my quilt sandwich gonna fold it up a bit so that it's away and I leave my little cup holder here for my receiver and it's just kind of handy the way to choose that it's got little slots in it it sits in there right so we're going to start right in the corner here I'll put my quilting Club song there just giving you a little more traction and if if I think that'll pull up my friend so in the corner pop my needle and let me lock my top three times they let the bottom thread just stitch useless I have my needle set to UM you go down position a little pincushion my first flowers kind of decrepit well my first law is not very good however show me what they thought so there's my first funny honey flower but the buster pretty good now I'll just carry on and fill up my sandwich and then I think what I'll do is I'll do the same idea here but just with a flower every so often from the border and that should look really quite nice so how's it look at the back great they can't see that Dejan Boas I can see that this is very doable and we've done pretty quickly too and I should be able to bind this tonight and have it on that dining room table tomorrow so it was nice to meet you all and enjoy your baby locked here have fun just like I am bye
