previously at Chester Zoo stage ask the lion cub are the splints taken off his deformed legs split early but have the treatment worked it might be too early we may have to put the dressings back on today let James examine stages where's uncle James well the bandages have to go back on there's a lot more study on his legs is amazing head keeper and it prepares to do battle with some baby-faced bodies they look very soft awfully cute animals but Sir they're not it's all hands to the pump when a Bab Arisa Paige refuses to go to sleep I've been involved in sedating ten Babu says now no this definitely has been the hardest one [Music] at Chester zooms easy attic Lion House a soccer the male and his mate Asha have been left out for the day indoors head keeper Allen Woodward is taking their two month old Cobb cages to be examined by resident vet James Chatterton James it was James and Alan took a decision to remove tear drops from his mother when it became clear she wasn't feeding him or his brother if we leave them in there I think they're gonna die you know so we need to take him out and Raven the other cub did died when he was only a few days old but Alan drew on his 35 years experience to make sure Taoiseach survived then came a shattering blow that's discovered he had something seriously wrong with his front legs and couldn't walk properly risks at all talking on his tiptoes he was diagnosed as having tight tendons his legs were put in slim which to try to correct the problems without the need for major surgery it's now three days since the bandages were taken off and James has come to examine him to see if there's any major change in his condition we were concerned that his front right leg wasn't quite perfect yet so the condition he's got may continue to improve without the without the bandages being on so there's two things we're doing today one is we're deciding how he's like to are doing and whether we need to Reeve and adjourn basically reapplies his support bandages and then the second thing we want to do is vaccinate him there we go the painful part over okay Alan is anxious to take tears yes back to his den so that James can see if there's any improvement in his walk he's walking much better ease is still it's not quite a hundred percent nerves I'll come that from right and he's not falling over anymore no he's moving much better I think he's moving even better than he wasn't on Friday afternoon so I think if we give him another day or two with it without then we'll reassess him on Wednesday go I think what we want is for if obviously we want the condition to carry on improving because he's not quite perfect he's dramatically better than it sure dramatically being with him every day keeping him occupied and exercising it's gonna stretch it even that more exactly and the exercise on on the rubber floor and he's gonna gonna do those likes the world of good really but I mean look at him now he's a different animal there's no real yeah he looks happy in it he's no they were saying that he was sat back in his back legs to take the weight off his front legs because they were a bit sore and I think that's proven true because he's now standing up properly on his hind limbs too less like a ball of fluff and more like a lion now I wasn't really worried about and not be long before he gets to go outside and see the big wide world and shows the pigeons yeah of course havoc amongst anything in his enclosure what he want you know it's really good to see even at his tender age day justice future is being carefully mapped out if he gets a clean bill of health he'll go to a zoo in France where he's wanted for an Asiatic Lion breeding program hi Maya tej the loss because I mean he's he's been through such a loss and he bounces back every time I dread the day now when he's gonna go I think of it a lot now he he looks to me a lot he looks towards the team a lot and but then that's another stage of growing up I mean we can't stay together forever and he has to become a lion and look after himself sometime but it's good in France when tatius grows up you'll be mated with a female in the hope that he'll father a new generation of Asiatic lions and it is to do that you'll need all the beauty sir you can get chest azouz newly arrived indonesian male babba rusa pig is in need of some serious dental work Sassy's tusks had become so overgrown he's in danger of stabbing himself in the head the talks are in urgent need of trimming but to do the job safely he must first be given a full anaesthetic zoo vet Steve Oliver has been called in he plans to inject the pig with the aid of a dark Donna and instead it goes on the top here and the needles are specially shaped so there's a hole on the side rather than the end so the dart is under pressure so there's air in here so when it hits the animal goes into the muscle and pushes this at that little cuff back and the drug will go under pressure into the muscle and then will hopefully go to sleep it actually did more difficult to try and data on this post space because the guns designed for a long longer distance and I could have used a blowpipe buddies get more control when in first time went off lovely so I'll just leave him quietly now to Chris Lee 15 minutes and keep an eye on him but went to save him please keep me quiet the most risky part of any anesthetic is when you induce them and they go to sleep and when they wake up so they need to be monitored very closely and here's a new animal to the zoo and as far as we're aware from his medical records he's never had an anesthetic before so so if every animal will react differently to the same sort of dose of anesthetic and I didn't think at the beginning that the dart had gone in terribly far which could be a bit of a problem because the uptake of the anesthetic could be a bit slower very far as time passes Sassoon shows little signs of nodding off Steve decides to give him a second dose of the drug always well out of his but not totally asleep that retrieves the original dart and discovers why it didn't work properly you can see here it's gone in okay but it's only gone in about let's see where the hole is that's where the drug would have come out of so some of it may have always say come subcutaneously which is just underneath the skin so it's sedated him but made him not quite deep enough for us to better handle it we have not these breakfast it's probably another happiness just do all they can do is wait later on Sassoon finally falls asleep and Tim gets to work with cheese wire a wire that keeper of primates our dilemma has come to give the zoo's colony of ruffed lemurs their morning feed like the more familiar ring tailed lemurs these animals come from the rain forests of Madagascar but they are the similarity between the two species ends ruffed lemurs can be highly aggressive this is a family group and and it has worked with them since they were born we've got ten in this group there's mum dad and a offspring they've all been given names from the keepers the mother and father are called steak and kidney I don't know don't ask me who named him that but someone had a bit of a brainstorm and Nathan that of the time the female is aggressive all year round very aggressive so we lock her out whenever we're doing something the male gets a bit of a dog's life really from from his space and also his daughters but we've got four males leaving tomorrow for a zoo down in Suffolk because they are young every year as well which again is unlike a lot of the other monkeys and the Apes it's sort of a bit of like an assembly line so you've just got to keep churning a mate and sending them off to the other zoo so it's quite a hard job finding homes year after year after year and it's not in the market with catching the nina's promises to be a treatment and potentially dangerous job the difference with these is that they're very very strong and they act very differently - ringtail lemurs when you caption if you grab their tails they just turn on you to try and bite you instantly so you can't really do that with the ruffed lemurs but sound we're hearing now we just heard that's the call of the rough lemurs a lot of people a lot of visitors hear it from from long way away in the zoo and they come running up here thinking it's a fight breaking out it's not that they look very soft fluffy cute animals but they're not the four males that are going to another zoo are due to leave tomorrow it's going to be a hectic day for the primate team Chester Zoo sassou the Indonesian Babur Ossipee has finally fallen asleep head Caperton Roland's doesn't want to risk waking him by moving him he's decided to trim the pig's tusks on the spot in the wild the Tufts would snap off naturally as the animal routes around the forest floor for food I get blown on they start a fire just to keep their dust from out of his eyes Tim is slicing through the tusks using cheese wire yes she turned down okay master wire now you go to sleep yeah the risks are far from over sassou could injure himself or his keepers as he recovers from the anaesthetic doesn't bother to notice the team decides to move him to a safer place one two three slide [Music] let's even win gives him a reversal injection to bring him round it takes five people to keep sassing pinned down to stop him staggering around and hurting himself because it didn't go according to plan a we went to plan B which we'd already organized so we did him put his teeth in there and now because we gave him the reversal a little earlier than we would have normally have done we want to make sure that he's not going to get up too quickly and starts by going around these guys are fairly notorious for coming around badly so we're trying to make sure that he's down long enough eh for the reversal to kick in and B that it will have full coordination they decide to leave him alone and let him come round in his own good town if he can get something to some sort of recovery position then much happier that he shouldn't image in himself now I mean he's in a padded off Chopin he's got a deep bed in the corner it doesn't matter how much you put straw over the whole area he's gonna move it around and he's still gonna hit the floor so he's unwell by matting he's got soft wood all the way around the side so he's just got to get used to it and get his feet find his feet so he can stand properly the best thing we can do for now is sort of be quietly from live Malone just have one person watching him off the monitors later on things go from bad to worse assassin struggles to find his religion he's over had too much to drink or he's been on the roundabout and spun round too fast for too long [Music] at flamingo lake the old flamingo Harris with its outdated facilities has been demolished to make way for a new state-of-the-art building new head keeper where MacLeod is delighted with the waves taking shape the keepers involved from the very start we know what the birds as requirements ah that's amazing when you see it all come together this is the Hilton Hotel for flamingo believe me put a plasma screen in the corner and I'll be happy to move in area although Wayne's pleased he's finding it stressful as the builders race to complete the house before winter sets in we already took a minute because he's we get any freezes the problem is the birds are hard enough the cold weather won't won't bother them we've got a electric hot wire running around the enclosure and that's ticking over at 5,000 volts that is there solely to keep foxes out because if a fox was to get into the enclosure it would kill not just one but possibly you know 10 15 Birds so the problem we've got if we get a freeze basically a fox could hop over the electric fence and get into the enclosure so you know panic stations at the minute the guys have thrown us off in six weeks with Renier completely gone another week or two and hopefully we don't get any cold weather than that time boxes aren't the only danger the flamingos face if the lake freezes they also risk slipping on the ice breaking their fragile legs and wings it's a nightmare and I mean you see a clear night and he's saying you know God that pond doesn't freeze tonight usually takes a couple of them cold nights to get the water to actually freeze because you need the water temperature to drop on it we've been lucky when we've had a clear night the next day's been quite quite warm well I just hope these guys can get this finished off before well in a week or so because the working dawn till dusk on it they've done well the builders will continue working as fast as they can all Wayne can do is keep his fingers crossed for mild weather until it's finished [Music] visitors have begun arriving to see Chester's newest attraction a baby tapir she's just 24 hours old and senior keeper Helen lassie has come to make sure she's okay pregnancy in of tape years 13 months which is quite a long time considering that rhinos are 15 months and then you've got the other extreme of deer and antelope which is usually seven or eight months so it's it's a long time coming but definitely worth it tapir is our natives of South America and distant relatives of the Rhino and the horse Helen's delighted to see that mum Jennifer and dad Cusco are taking good care of the baby Jennifer's a very good mom and dad's also a good dad and I was cleaning them out this morning and they were both taking it in turns to come in and check on the baby and then yeah just kept swapping around all the time she's still a bit wobbly on the legs being pushed around quite a lot by mom being told where to go and obviously the markings are great all the babies have stripes until they're about nine months old just for camouflage really because obviously they won't move around very much so they need to keep hidden some people say that play the tape is look like I'm in humbugs there which which is true they're very striking and it's the brown and cream colour really good description of them the baby will be allowed out in a day or two [Music] it's been several hours since ass'll the Barossa pig had his tusks trimmed but he's still suffering from the effects of the anesthetic his whole world is spinning so he can't keep his feet he's either had far too much to drink or he's been on the roundabout and spun around too fast for too long so he's just can't can't get his feet together these guys fight it from the moment they're injected to the moment they get completely round so their way of fighting it is to get up and get moving even if their legs I'm capable of taking that so it looks a lot worse than it actually is I've been involved in sedating ten Babu says now I think it was Oh most of them for who've shown in I've got males and this probably is no this definitely has been the hardest one it's not going to smoothly as the others but he's a new animal and we'll learn from this exactly what dosage will work with him he just didn't go down as usually as some of the others but the outcome will be the same he'll be good Sassou will stay in his padded stall over in l8 only when he's fully recovered and steady on his feet will he be allowed back to his own enclosure next time head keeper is older older breast as boy-meets-girl unfortunately it takes time to develop with reptiles it's not always a little bit first sight it's more love at first bright where your booze has been dreading smooth radio weather for the northwest freezing weather a chance of more frost and ice following last night's really cold weather today's maximum seven degrees again this evening below freezing wrap-up nice and warm the weather forecast signals a dramatic race against the clock to get the flamingos safely inside their new home [Music]
