[Music] hey guys welcome back to langley firearms academy this is brayden and as always i've got another fun one for you today today we are doing another behind the bullet so i'm comparing nine millimeter versus 380 acp very very similar rounds but also very very different so what we're going to do now we're just going to dive into the differences and the similarities and really kind of give you an idea of what's the what's the whole deal between 9 millimeter versus a 380 and why do we see so many guns chambered in 380 on the smaller side of ultra compact carry versus nine mil and so that's what we're gonna be talking about today so without further ado let me introduce our two bullets i have the nine mil right here and then i have the 380 right here so off the bat you can tell that the 380 is significantly shorter it's a more rounded off the note on the nose and the bullet it's not as pointed as the nine mil it's also a shorter cartridge complete cartridge so that is something that lends it to being a more compact gun because it's a small a smaller more compact bullet so first let's go into the uh background it's actually very interesting they both have their roots in the european theater so nine millimeter george lugar 1908 it was he was a german and then the germans picked it up and it's been one of the most popular cartridges and handguns in the world for years extremely popular round very good stopping power very light recoil very effective good distance very very good round overall however there's also another nine mil and this is kind of where it gets a little confusing confusing a 380 acp also known as a 380 or a 9x17 or a 9 millimeter curves okay so the interesting part here is they're both nine millimeter bullets the nine millimeter that americans know is the nine millimeter nine by nineteen nine uh millimeter parabellum there's a lot of different names for it but it's this it's the typical bullet like you would see here american law enforcement and military both adopted the nine mil however in europe the um 380 is extremely popular it's also called a nine millimeter in europe the reason why is both of these bullets are nine millimeters in diameter the only difference is the height now you mentioned i mentioned a second ago nine by 19 for the american nine millimeter and nine by 17 for the 380 or european nine millimeter that's just the height so they're both nine mil um diameters but the height is different now the 380 being that it is a smaller cartridge is going to have lighter bullets it's not going to be as engineered for distance it's not going to have as much stopping power as a traditional american nine millimeter that everyone recognizes as a nine mil an interesting little fun fact the nine millimeter curves or 380 nine millimeter curves occurs in german is short so it literally means nine millimeters short which is very apparent right here because you have the nine mil on the right and the nine mil right here the nine millimeter occurs or short so the reason that 380 you're seeing a lot of guns chambered in 380 like the lcp like the lc 380 like the excuse me like the um the sig 238 a lot of those very very small guns are chambered in 380 acp well the reason why is the bullet is such a compact bullet that it can fit into a much smaller frame gun and when you're talking about an ultra carry gun you've got a lot lighter bullet lot lighter gun it's a big benefit now the only downside is when you compare these two bullets the nine millimeter curves or 380 has a lighter bullet so it doesn't have as much penetration or stop much stopping power as the nine millimeter that you know of in america the main thing here is it doesn't really matter the 380 specifically in american gun designers is designed to be a tiny little gun i mean if you've seen the lcps or the the p238s they're very very small the idea is accuracy is not paramount it's a very close get away from a bullet and in that capacity it's extremely effective now just a side note the 380 i have fired almost every 380 sub compact ultra carry that i have um ever run across and i don't like firing any of them because they're always smaller guns and i have bear paws for hands however the caveat to that is the glock 42. the glock 42 is chambered in 380 and it is one of the smoothest most accurate firing 380s that i've ever fired um glock did an amazing job with that gun so just a little shout out to glock right there but 380 not designed for accuracy not designed for overall stopping power it's more of a get away from a bullet nine millimeter parabellum or nine millimeter or nine mil luger or yeah nine millimeter luger is designed for a little more distance a little more stopping power and a little bit more velocity so i hope that clears some stuff up for you versus 380 versus nine millimeter and i hope it kind of enlightens you to the design and the idea behind both those bullets and why they are the way they are and how you'll notice when you fire them the distinct characteristics that make them their own bullet both nine millimeters but both completely different until next time guys i am brayden and i'll talk to you later
