everybody this morning i had an alarm set for 9 00 a.m it had two things on it one of them was dead by daylight maybe we'll see some of that in the future the other one was play a little bit of chess as i am always one trend behind you know what's popping off on twitch right now among us you know what popped off on twitch this summer chess i said i'll never play it here i am it's november i'm gonna play a little bit this is chess.com we're doing some some chess-based puzzles i uh for a bit of a preamble first off i know there's gonna be like some mega back seating and i'm okay with it if you can beat me in the puzzles more power to you maybe we'll play some speed chess like some 10 aside speed chess on the channel no promises but for now we're gonna play a little puzzle rush three strikes you're out for a little bit of a preamble i did uh used to play competitive chess as a pre-teen adolescent and in my early teenage years um i think my rating in in-person tournament play was like somewhere around 1400 to 1500. it's pretty good for a little kid playing against adults you know and there were the adults wearing the fingerless gloves and with the pigeons and no it's just a glamorized idea of what new york city chess is like anyway we're going to get started so the way that the puzzles work to my understanding i saw hafu do this you have to find checkmate in one or two moves um it depends on which puzzle it is if you get three wrong you lose so let's see how good we can do is an easy one queen there checkmate okay it's white to move on this one it's white to move i'm going to tell you that's checkmate you're not going to get me on this one it's white to move it's checkmate we take this you take me i take you that's checkmate no problem okay now this is where things get a little funky white to move the simple thing that you would think of first is maybe we're gonna put you in check it is not checkmate though let me hold okay hold on hold on hold the front door in my head i'm like check you move here probably i go check you take me and then i go bishop here and then i go here and you're not toasted okay hold on you know what you got me a little confused on this one i'm not gonna deny you got me a little confused on this one i still think we start here okay but we would then follow up i take oh okay i didn't think it through problem solved all right black to move certainly to me seems like we would take the bishop with the pawn can't really come up with a great reason why we wouldn't do that at which point my next hunch would be to move the pawn a little further down and then to move the pawn a little further down and turn it into a queen okay so we're doing pretty well we're at an elo rating of 351 right now [Laughter] so it's a good start after a long time away so let's think about this all right this is definitely a pretty good move right here obviously we get a fork out of it what follows that it's worth thinking about you know it's worth thinking about what follows then obviously you could take the rook you yeah i it depends if we're looking for mate or if we're just looking for the right move okay so if you have moved there certainly to me if if i were playing this game maybe there's a mate that we should be looking out for but i would just do something like this okay so maybe it's not always made maybe it's just about finding what the analysis feels are the best moves like for me here i definitely like the idea of getting you in checkmate it's pretty good all right now this is a more interesting one what do we do with this i mean it's not actually that interesting at all we just put you in checkmate so there's a few heuristics you run through and obviously like we're still at an extremely low level right here there's a few heuristics you run through in uh you know anytime you're trying to come up with with the way that you should do these puzzles i think that when i've seen other people do it sometimes there is a tendency to maybe just focus on whatever check is and assume that's always gonna be right it's not always gonna be right but it is a pretty good starting point like on this one if you take your queen and you put the king in check you also uh get the opportunity to capture the bishop after they do whatever they're gonna do there so definitely seems advisable to me i think you just do that all right we're we're cruising through this one all right white to move an intro this is a a very interesting setup here how would you want to do this very simply you would want to pin the queen it's not a pin i forget what it's called if you pin a piece that means they can't move that piece um because they're the king would be in check or it would reveal a more powerful piece behind it um if you hit it's like a skewer maybe when you put the king in check and then when the king is forced to move you get the piece behind it um so you might think that the right play here is to take with the queen my personal hunch is that the actual uh right play is to take with the rook that way we don't we have a more valuable swap as a result instead of leaving our queen open to be swapped i did not expect we were going to go any further but that's the move alright so we're up to 6.74 i'm do it honestly i'm feeling okay but these have been pretty easy so far but i haven't played chess in a long time i feel like it's starting to come back to me all right let's let's do this this is puzzle number 11. all right black to move certainly a more complicated board space but not really you fork the king and you capture the rook what do you do after that capture the bishop for free absolutely okay ah um this is a it's a wild one my and oh it's interesting this is where if you're in an endgame situation you start to crunch the numbers you don't want their king to take your two pawns you you can't stop him from taking this one so you might think you move your king up here to protect this pawn later but really uh if i remember my my theory correctly you just want to be the first person to get a queen if you can get a queen on the board faster it doesn't matter if you got no pawns left so i would say one of these moving forward is probably the right idea um i don't know which one it it probably doesn't matter too much but i would say this one maybe because it gives us some tempo if we get a queen by immediately putting the king in check so we just race i'm pretty impressed with myself on that one this is checkmate right all right so we're on puzzle 14. this is how this works right like this is the elo here all right white to move obviously like this is pretty good but is it really what we want i would say no because our rook is still under attack i think first you capture the bishop then you do the check which allows you to take that piece for free all right black to move we're getting we're getting pretty close to the quadruple digits i'm starting to feel uh starting to feel my chest acumen coming back so right off the bat i see a couple of moves here um i you might think that it's moving you know the pawn to h6 to threaten the bishop i don't think so i think it gives white uh he puts the ball in their cord personally the queen on first glance appears quite hemmed into me um so what would i do here i would think maybe like knight to c5 and then that kind of forces the play i don't know where they would go with it next it might be wrong actually maybe i'm missing something more obvious oh wait you know what this might be a weird on poisson play because oh no i thought they moved this pawn up that's not right they moved they moved this bishop last from here to okay all right now this is a tougher one i think it's this and then after you do that the question is where would you put the knight next you would probably take this pawn i guess okay and that puts uh the threat on the queen which means you get away with it um but we're definitely getting to the point where it's a little bit trickier [Laughter] um a little bit trickier okay so you move this to here in this game i don't think we're at the level yet where we want to consider this but would i like to trade uh my my black bishop for the night probably not well i don't know the white bishop is is good it's a relatively closed game on the the queen side at least hmm this one where you got to think one thing i would i would probably can actually you know i'm way overthinking it you would definitely just capture the bishop with your knight and then you would capture the night with your bishop and that i'm happy to do this trade all day all right so the white pieces to move to me it certainly seems like like what did you capture you probably are c-pawn yeah i mean it seems to me like we would capture that with our bishop f can we go back to this is there any way to see what you're supposed to do on this one maybe not translate to english that won't be necessary i would maybe you can go back after you lose and see it okay so that that one burns me up we just went a little too fast something you never want to do in chess you never want to move too fast so on this one honestly and these are getting way more complicated now honestly my uh initial gut reaction is that we want to stack our rooks to put more pressure on this knight and it becomes very difficult there's no place for the knight to move they can move it here but then the rook is uh under attack you know basically it's it's a free piece so we're looking for any place where we can apply leverage 1089 bb this is a tough one too normally you would be like maybe this is where like putting them in check seems like the galaxy brain play but is actually terrible i think the real play here is you move your rook over to e1 so that the king pawn can't actually capture the knight without putting the king into check okay okay it's three strikes and you're out so this is for all the marbles right here okay remember it's not always checkmate it's not always about checkmate couple of different options here this piece is gone no matter what it would behoove us in my opinion to constantly keep um the king under threat so my with two rooks the bishop is kinda you know that this is gonna get hit that's it is what it is um i would like to keep the king under check because here's my play right now we do this he's forced to go here it's his only legal move then we go down here you can block with the rook you can block with the knight what happens after that i think you're in mate let's try we'll take it moving forward we might get to puzzle 20. that would that would be a start for me i mean this seems like a gimme right because you're in check you're like or because you're like oh look at this incredible fork here but we are in check so the question is is there anything that we can do to get ourselves out of check i'll tell you what you don't want to do is move backwards moving backwards means you die because you just get check checkmated right here um you it's got to be moving the pawn forward one f high is solved 1164. is there any way to see what we did wrong on these so what was the you scored 10 in puzzle rush the theme of this one was pin show solution so on this one i took which is not correct what's the solution queen check all right that's a lot better [Laughter] i'll give you that one um let's move uh back one hopefully that was still in the right spot on the screen region and then this one yeah it seems roughly correct so what did we do on this one oh yeah okay so we moved the rook over one what would be the actual solution here honestly now that i think about it it's probably moving your queen to uh a4 that i mean there's there's advantages and disadvantages i guess i believe that this is probably correct but um you move queen to a4 that forces this move right here then if you take the king can no longer castle i mean i guess the king can no longer cancel no matter what um or maybe when you move this to here there's like a fork that we can get i don't know i mean let's see it is queen to a4 oh the pawn moves forward first then the queen moves forward oh okay interesting i i didn't see that coming and then 12 33 okay white to move what did we do on this one we move the pawn forward so let's let's see where it's actually at um i'm actually stupid you just take the queen [Laughter] yeah okay so is this can i play it play problem yeah all right all right literally i'm dumb okay well let's uh let's get another puzzle rush set up here i think we can do two per video all right so we we got like to 1150 or something all right black to move usually you know how these are gonna go early something like this okay you have moved your queen to here my advice is to capture no well hold on hold the front door the problem is it's still good though like we're still in a i know this seems so backwards but i'm like we are in a good position if we capture the queen even if you do this we get a rook for for our queen and you get nothing for your queen i would definitely still do it yeah all right that i almost out thought myself there here's the thing you know there's there's good moves and then there's the best moves that one was kind of an easy one for sure maybe they're all easy and i'm just overthinking it um i would definitely immediately and we should probably be a little bit slower on these but you get how it is i mean this is a checkmate right here there's a classic little checkmate situation let's caffeinate before we get too deep if you're enjoying the chess by the way please do click the like button one of the reasons i have been so hesitant to play more chess in the future is as a result of the fact that uh there's going to be a lot of back seating the bank seating's fine as long as it's like you know civil and not like look at this show me your appreciation if you enjoy it and we'll move from there let's put it that way we'll move from there so here's here's how i'm looking at this all right it's it's tricky i feel like there's a couple i don't like this one okay i feel like i'm gonna make the wrong decision the move definitely involves your knight so here's here's what i'm thinking right you could move your knight here for check which forces them to deal with the knight they take with the queen you take the rook you did just get a a rook for a knight which is a great trade at which point they go into check again via the rook and that will force the king to move upward and i don't really know what we do from that point onward um but i think that's decent but then i'm also like what if you did this we kind of lose the control right like we lose the tempo if we if we move our knight here especially you could capture and well but okay so it was right i just out thought myself a little bit we didn't have to go as deep as we as we did um this is a pretty easy one you go check and checkmate anytime you're just trying to find checkmate and you know that there's like a solution in that capacity life's a lot easier oh this is a gimme as well you put the king in check which exposes the queen you take the queen all right pretty simple as well you're gonna fork and then capture the queen this is go is going okay so far um it's another pretty common situation here you'd probably be looking at something like uh you know using the rook to put the king in check they can only move here at which point you capture this and i believe it's made so immediately what my head jumps to is this sequence capture no that's bad what i was thinking is capture they capture you capture and then they're forced to basically sack this but that's not true at all and we'd be in check so it's a bad move um i the much simpler move is just this capture the rook and then you know you get that for free i don't know why i over thought that so hard um okay so you moved your rook here what on earth are we gonna do about that this one's this one's weird is it weird i don't know i kind of feel like you just do the gimme capture the bishop now this is where i'm like i don't know what you do after this point [Laughter] um this is unless i'm overthinking it heavily this is like the trickiest move we're in check no it's not that tricky i mean we only have one move right the only thing we can do is move forward one okay i don't know why sometimes it's the ones that seem simplest that are actually the trickiest this one on the other hand you're like it's automatic okay 13 in a row feeling pretty solid about this white to move honestly this is a surprise checkmate you wouldn't think you'd want to sack your queen like that but but the analysis of the egg brain already one step ahead okay typically especially in an open game like this you might look for something like this fork you definitely just want to do that what do you want to do from this point onwards that's that's the interesting thing honestly you go for a secondary fork this one it's kind of my okay here's what you do you capture and then you fork sorry i didn't really work through my thought process but i'm i'm on a roll right now i'm feeling great all right so we have been put into check we only have two moves that makes it very easy do we go yes i think you definitely go here why because we have this rook covering us um and what do you do from this point onward now that's uh now that's a conundrum the fact that there is a move here is interesting to me the first thing that jumps out to me is like maybe you could do a cheeky sacrifice there's no point i think you just cap the pawn and then for some reason they resign um not literally but it didn't look like a good move to me let's put it that way so you have moved from here to here you're gonna take this pawn in my opinion no that's one of those times where i'm like it might not have been the best move but come on it's good enough now this is a more complicated board state let's take a second what's the move well this is like it's the pressure point right you might think what if we cap i don't think it's necessary i mean maybe it is like if we cap here it kind of forces them to make a move if they capture our queen you might think that's like a good move for them but then we actually get to essentially bank the rook um because we can capture this one put them in check and then capture the queen back so what would be black's other move in this situation if we captured here we i think i like this i like this actually i've talked myself into it white to move this is a situation we do not try to engage in a race we just try to catch the pawn and then you might think cap we don't need the cap until they waste the move we can instead just push our pawn beautiful all right we're setting new pbs here people my first hunch here is that we go here forces the king to go to g6 if we move the king to g6 actually you know what this is just mate then right okay never mind kind of almost over thought myself i can feel the muscles starting to rebuild dude i can feel the muscles starting to rebuild so for me personally this is an interesting move but i kind of like capturing uh the c2 pawn with our rook which puts them in check moves the king here which then allows us to move again to put the king in check i don't know where we would go the alternative would be cap the bishop at which point what happens not much i like this i like this let's go okay genius strategies um now the hard part is what comes after that i don't think it's captured this i think it's capture the knight that hurt that hurt i'm cutting myself some slack it's been a while all right we're on one strike [Laughter] you've moved queen to here i would think that you move this pawn puts you in check what can you do you can only move here what follows that we capture this and i think you're in mate that is not mate but this is mate after you move the queen yeah all right can we get to 1 300. when i was 12 years old if somebody told me their rating was 1300 i would have laughed in their face and then pushed my taped up glasses like further up my forehead but today i'll take what i can get i'll take what i can get so the the gimme here is you capture this but what follows this capture the king would move to here at which point what do we do maybe like that at which point they move here what do we do you know it it just kind of never ends there maybe there's a better move away ah you know what hold on hold the front door check this out check this out check which forces just do it no [Music] but it was the best ever we got to 1292 and let's look at the ones we got wrong here okay all right so on this one what did we do i don't even remember what we did did we capture the rook what's the solution here ah checkmate huh that's pretty good so i just missed the mate fair enough that should really be your first principle is like can i get checkmate on this turn you miss this one theme discovered attack okay let's uh move forward where were we on this one oh okay so i remember we we did this capture and then we took the knight the night capture was not the right play oh you know what put the queen under attack that's way better all right so we've solved our problem on that one easy enough and then this one we just had so we did the wrong thing immediately this must be the right thing then let's try again oh you know what this must be the right thing oh that's not the right thing because the king would just take you then it must be this there we go all right little embarrassing but also for for a first like return not so bad i hope you guys have enjoyed the episode if you did click the like button helps out a great deal again i'm playing this on chess.com what an amazing website if you enjoyed it thanks for your support let me know you want to see more and i'll show you some more
