[Music] what's popping this mellow back at you with another video and what we're getting into today is 808s we're gonna go over some of the basics some more advanced stuff as far as how to make it sip good in the mix how to make it stand out and things like that but before we get started what i want you to do is put a like on the video it helps spread it through the algorithm and all that magical stuff puts me in a position to keep making the videos all that even though i'm not monetized it just spreads it so that i can grow and things like that and keep giving you this good game this good sauce let's get into it so the first thing we'll be getting into is 808 control and that means where the 808 starts and stops having control of that so the first type of way because we have three type of ways to do this first type of way we're going to go over is the envelope so when you open up any 808 in a sampler you're going to go to this tab right here on the envelope right here this whole section drag down the attack it's automatically going to click the envelope on turn down the release and now on that 808 it will stop wherever the note stops in the piano roll or even if you play it on a keyboard it'll stop the moment you stop playing the note the second way to go about controlling the 808 is loop points so you may have an 808 like this with the two red lines on the end and this click right here where it says use loop points if it comes like that it's already set up to stop wherever you stop the note but beware if you drag the note too long it will replay the sample so with this if you see a sample to set up like this with the red lines and use loop points you don't have to go to the envelope if that's how you want to control it you just lay it out and they'll stop wherever you want them to stop now if you want the notes to drag out and you don't want to manually drag them all out like this you put a note at the top of whatever bar is going to be outside of what you're doing you hold ctrl and press l it's going to drag all the notes out you get rid of that and then everything is good that works for the envelope control method and also the loop control method now for the last method is going to be the cut itself method and you usually do this i do this all the time when you don't want to use the envelope or the loop points and you just want the 808 to play the full way out each time without overlapping over itself or anything like that so this is how you do it if you have an 808 that has the loop points on there just click the use loop points button off most 808s won't come like that so you don't have to worry about that you'll go to the sample and you'll make sure cut itself is clicked and what will happen from there now no matter what the note length is it'll play the full 808 now let's say you want to choke it so that it just stops on the dime wherever you want it to stop all you do is put a note drag the velocity all the way down because it's set to cut itself off it'll stop itself right there now let's talk about the types of 808s there are three attributes that each 808 has the attack the sustain or the length and the amount of distortion let's focus on the attack first because that's one of the most important things there are really two types of attacks really but i'll break it down to four just to be more specific so the first you have is punchy where the 808 hits hard listen [Music] so at the top of both of those 808s they hit pretty hard now we're going to go to the next one which would be a softer punch now as far as that it doesn't have as much high end on the initial punch but it still thumps in the low end then you have the fade in punch which is still like a soft bump but you know it kind of fades in if you look at it and if you listen to it so boom you have those and then you have the no bump 808 which is really a 808 if it doesn't have a bump it's really a sub bass but let's listen so you have all of those types and when it comes to the attack the attack is important because depending on what type of kick you use certain types of kicks complement others more and we'll get into that in another video that i'm going to do in the future about the relationships between kicks and 808s and another thing some people don't use kicks over their 808s if you want to be that type of guy you're going to have to use a punchy 808 that hits really hard when it comes in now as far as the sustain is very simple you have long sustain you then have decayed sustained which decay sustain is when the volume goes down and the last one the volume stayed the same the whole way through let's listen to this one then you have short 808 now for the last part you usually have different flavors of distortion but for this we're just going to say heavily distorted and minimal distortion now as far as the last two things the sustain and the distortion those two things are really going to play into the mix of the track how the track sounds the feel of the track the sauce all of that stuff so if you listen to a lot of migos stuff or even a lot of zaytoven he uses a lot of shorter 808s as where if you listen to something like wonder girl when she makes stuff for travis scott or something like that her 808s drag out a lot longer so my tip to you would be when you hear certain tracks listen for that to sustain in the distortion and things like that and how much of that is taken over the track is that really running the track or does it kind of sit in the background what is it doing very quickly i want to go over a few types of 808s that are really used in the game prevalently right now you have this type of 808 i call it the amigos 808 somebody probably call it the pyrex 808 or some like you know like one of the producers or whatever then you have the infamous dj spins 808 and then you have the wonder girl 808 that you really hear in a lot of drill music or travis scott type production and things of that nature when you look through most kits you're usually going to see some type of variant or remix literally remix like they're taking the sample and mixing in a different way of those types of 808s so that's just some good stuff to know because those 808s get used a lot because they sound good sounds that work get used a lot that's a good tip for you that's a pro tip so very quickly i just want to give you a refresher on hot spots so as far as hot spots when it comes to 808 patterns these are the spaces that are most used with kicking 808 patterns in most trap beats so let's start with the most red so this spot right here is the hottest because in most beats that you're going to listen to on the first beat of each bar there's going to be a 808 hitting or a kick hitting facts now as far as the burgundy spots these are the second two hottest [Music] less hot than the other one but usually either one or both of these spots are hit in most 808 drum patterns if not both one of them now as far as this spot in this spot those two spots are the third most common place and i'm just going to play this pattern you've heard this pattern before just those alone just working with those alone you can make so much happen but those are the third most common spaces that you hear 808 so looking at this framework if you're having issues on where to put your 808s just remember this spot is the hottest these two spots are the second hottest really you could just run with those and build around those each time and if you listen to drum patterns you'll see that the kicks in the 808s usually land in these spaces if you have not watched my trap drum patterns video i recommend that you watch that and the hi-hat patterns video links to both will be in the description all right so for this i'm going to go over two concepts at the same time that are very important making sure your 808 is tuned to the c key and what notes you should be hitting as far as the 808 at each time so here i have a piano melody [Music] now when you're making the melody what you want to do is follow the bass notes now if you're using a loop or something like that you're going to have to find a bass note yourself but if you're making a melody ghost notes are usually automatically turned on so i have an 808 right here now this 808 has a few issues why would i click these other notes does it play the same notes because of the time just go to the time click none you're good now it's going to play different notes now what you want to do each note that is the base note you want to put the 808 there probably going to be in too low of an octave so after you do that you want to hold ctrl and push the up arrow two or three times that'll boost it up a few octaves let's listen to it now so wait a minute i follow the bass notes but it doesn't sound right that's because for whatever reason this 808 is not keyed to c so what we're going to do the easiest way that i feel to go about this is to right click different notes on the sampler's piano for the root note and things like that until it sounds right [Music] now it sounds right but let's say you just don't got the ear for that let's say you just don't have the ear and you gotta you get like you know i don't know why you're making music but let's just say you don't have the ear for that and you need something to show you physically what note is what note i got you i got you what you want to do is go to the sample you want to right click the sample edit an audio editor right click the sample go to regions and then click detect pitch regions now i told you this 808 has a lot of problems because what the is this it has three pitch regions the body of the 808 is the middle the middle is b1 that's what the note is that you're going to hear each time you play the 808 so when we go back to the sampler we're on c5 this note is b we click that and now it's on key [Music] so now as far as your eight awaits they're on key and they're not gonna sound all weird and stuff alright so the last thing that we'll be going over is clip in distortion and things like that so i'm using a sample from my sample pack heart in the piano volume 2 and i laid out a 808 and kick pattern [Music] [Music] now that sounds good the 808 is very bold crisp all that good stuff now let's listen to it with a different 808 [Music] so as far as that 808 it doesn't have as much presence as the other 808 so what are some things we could do to make it stand out well this is the first thing let's open up the sampler and let's click this right here to go to this tab the pre-computed effects or whatever you want to click on clip right there and boost the sample let's listen to the difference that's with the clip off obviously with the clip on let's listen to it in the context of the actual beat [Music] stands out a lot more even with that if you still want the decay there you can still decay it and it's still going to hit his heart [Music] so you have that that's one way to go about it another way to go about it is by using distortion now there are a ton of different types of distortion too much for me to get into in this video i'll just be using a few some of them will be stock some of them will be paid for the main one i'm going to show you how to use is blood overdrive because it comes with fruity loops and stuff like that and then after that you know we'll look at the other examples of fast distortion rc 20 and izotope and had a different distortion sound so for the blood overdrive what you're going to do you're going to put it on there and all you got to do is really turn up this right here to preamp you don't got to use all this other stuff you could literally just use a preamp and that'll be that [Music] made it sound massive and it's not clipping it's not going over to zero now let's listen to the other distortions and see how they sound [Music] one thing you can do to blend the distortion with the current 808 is by pulling this down some and do it while you're listening to the beat [Music] you see it's there but it's just there less [Music] so that'll get it to stand out in the mix now another thing you could do let's say the 808 already sounds good by itself it's just drowning in the mix you just you just it's just not coming out you could just turn down the melodic elements so that the drums stand out sometimes the melodic elements are too loud let's let's do it [Music] so you have that that works as well now the last thing i'm going to say what if you want to be one of the cool kids and use a 808 with no kick with no kick so let's take the kick off [Music] so that don't sound right but to some people it may but this is what you want to do you want to have you want to have a 808 that has some punch at the beginning you know kick a thump whatever you want to call it this definitely has a decent one and what you want to do what i recommend is clipping it turn the velocity all the way up on each note it's going to hit different [Music] now truth be told we don't really want to clip for real so what we're going to do is put a limiter on it some people use soft clip or whatever we'll talk about that another day in another video which will be the kicks video and all of that the kicks in 808 video we'll talk about that another day the soft clipper pull this down pull this down [Music] so now is at zero decibel so it's not actually clipping so when it's time to actually mix everything it all sounds smooth so today you learned a little bit about 808s and things like that i hope you found some value from it i'm going to have a separate tutorial about the relationship between kicks and 808s and it's going to be a little bit more on 808s with no kick so be on the lookout for that if you have any questions make sure you leave a comment if you have any thoughts be sure to leave a comment and also if you enjoyed the video if you got some value from this if you learned something be sure to subscribe because your boy will be dropping all types of knowledge bombs and free game and all of that stuff just giving the sauce away man don't you hate when people just be they they do the cook ups they don't show you the sounds they use and they don't show you nothing they just you just see them going to the next step you don't know what the is going on we're not doing that here melody beats is not doing that we're giving you every single thing man we giving you the sauce i will see y'all another day somehow some way but anyways i'm out [Music] you
