this video is sponsored by surf shark here we go again another fancy cutting board build now this is a really fun one and the idea is based off the original design from another woodworker named Andre one day I had the idea to scale up the dimensions of his pattern and it turned out pretty cool and well that's what this video is about walking you through my process of how I did just that on two rather large boards sized 20 by 24 in back inside at the planer I scribble some pencil lines on each board and that tells me the minimal amount I need to take off each face of each one I then organize everything by width and pair up two Walnut boards with one ch Cherry board I try to ensure that the two walnuts that go together are from the same original piece of Walnut but it's not critical and I'm eventually left with a mix of all the third pieces from all the other Walnut boards so things get a little mixed up here either way now I did run one edge of each board across the jointer to clean it up for no other reason than it gives me some straight lines to work with when offsetting the glue-ups I let everything sit overnight strip the clamps off gather everything up and head outside to the miter saw to flush up the ends of everything this isn't a super necessary step but it makes things a bit easier to push through the band saw in the coming steps the first thing I do is trim off the edges of each Trio of boards on a 45° angle the next thing I do is run everything through to create strips that are about 1 and 1/8 of an inch thick the next thing I do after that is run them all through the planer to clean up the marks left by the band saw blade and I bring them down to a finished thickness of 1 in sometimes it's like 1 and 1/16 but usually it's 1 [Music] in before going further on those I head back and I grab some more cherry and a little bit of Maple and I take it outside where I cut it up into pieces same length as before 28 in and then I run it through the same Milling process as [Music] [Music] before I trim off one side of these strips and trim off the other side and then run the Maple and Cherry through as well so that everything is the exact same width which usually ends up being about 2 and 3/8 of an inch an added step here is further ripping the Cherry strips into half at the band saw this glue up is all about combining everything into sets of three I glue one piece of maple to the Walnut side of the middle strip and one piece of cherry to the other side and I glue these sets up back to back to back in the same set of clamps [Music] about 2 hours after glue up I'll strip the calls and the clamps and I'll scrape the dried glue and I think this is an important step because if I don't knock down those glue ridges I'm setting myself up for some unevenly planed pieces I also think it's important important because it allows me to break things apart before any glue that got where it shouldn't have is fully cured and makes things even trickier to break apart I put some clamps back on just to apply some pressure while the glue does its thing until the next day and that gives us some time to talk about the sponsor of this video surf shark VPN so vpn's are something we often hear about for myself it was something I didn't pay a lot of attention to until some folks in the country I live in decided to start censoring what other folks see on the internet at the same time the opportunity to partner with surf shark came along which for me was perfect timing because I was really starting to see the value in protecting my online activity so VPN what is it well VPN stands for virtual private Network and it's an app and browser extension that lets you place your device anywhere in the world so you can access the internet as if that's where you actually were and keeps you safe and secure while doing so let's use Netflix as an example each country has its own catalog of original and licensed shows and movies if you have your heart set on on a movie or TV series but it's not available where you live surf shark will help break down those walls and Grant you access to that content secondly a VPN masks your IP address and encrypts your online data by adding an extra layer of security to keep all of your online activities safe and secure from prying eyes for example something else I recently learned is if you rent where you live or you're staying in an Airbnb did you know that the owner of that Wi-Fi connection can easily see all of your online activity think about that surf sharkk is also the only VPN where you can use one account across an unlimited amount of devices and lastly one additional feature of surf shark that I found to be really quite convenient is their antivirus software which can be installed with just a few more clicks of the mouse and put to work right away for even more added protection so what's the price tag on this big bundle of VPN value well right now surf shark is offering you an exclusive 83% off holiday season deal starting at just $249 a month and up to six additional free months it's entirely risk-free to try and backed by a 30-day money back guarantee so to take advantage of this truly epic offer simply click the link in the description to head over and start getting protected today a big thank you to Sur shark for sponsoring this video now let's head back to the next steps of the build after stripping the clamps I send everything through the planer and the goal here is to take the least amount of material off to make the sticks of wood exactly Square as in all four sides are the same Dimension usually ends up being somewhere between 2 and E of an inch and 2 and 1/4 of an inch it's not super critical what it ends up being what's super critical is again making sure that all four sides are the same [Music] Dimension flushing up the ends here is more important than the last ends we flushed up but still not super critical it just really helps make the pattern assembly a little easier on the eyes the biggest secret to building this pattern is that it actually takes two panels to create one board the second panel is offset from the first one by one pattern segment and it's the combination of the strips from each panel that is what creates the final zigzag style pattern each of these panels is 24 in wide so even though I've recently upgraded to a 20-in planer I still need to glue these up in parts to be able to send them through and then glue everything up into the final [Music] panels I take care of that last glue seam with 80 grit in the belt sander and then I cross cut everything into 2 and 1/2 inch thick ingrain strips and here is where the final pattern comes together it's a simple matter of taking one strip from one panel and then a strip from the other and then one strip from the other panel and then one strip from the other and just repeating that process until all out of strips once I've tweaked things to ensure everything is as aligned as it can possibly be I'll scribe a square pencil line across the pieces and it's actually this line that I use to line everything back up once the glue is on it's a little easier to line up a pencil line than to look at all the corners of the pattern and try to keep all those aligned while also racing against the glue I'll typically leave the final glue up in the clamps until the next day where I'll strip it and then I'll scrape off what I I can for dried glue and then I'll take things over to the flattening table I mentioned this router is set up from tot sled in my last video and I'll mention again that at some point I'll have a video all about it the Assembly of it and the construction of the big torsion box table it's mounted to it's been a significant upgrade in my shop I do so much flattening and being able to flatten multiple and large boards at the same time is just awesome it's already saved me so much time since I got it a quick hit with ad80 grit in the belt sander will remove the router bit marks a quick run through the table saw will clean up the edges the idea behind the pencil marks is to ensure the surface has been consistently sanded to 120 git one of the two future owners of the boards requested a juice Groove so I do that using a/2 in round nose bit and I usually doing in about three go rounds of the board for the finger holds I use a slightly larger bit in a slightly larger router and I'll mention that links to pretty much everything I use will be in the description below if you want to look into items further from there is just a few hours of sanding which is pretty straightforward I continue on by hitting all the edges and Corners with 120 Grit once all the hand sanding is done I go through four more grits with the orbital 180 220 320 and I finish with 400 I also raised the grain with a little water in between each grit to raise up those end grain fibers and then knock them down with the next grit the final thing I'll do before oil is blow off any residual sanding dust with some compressed air there's also a link to both the oil and the beeswax I use in the description below I gave these boards about 48 hours to air out before applying the beeswax mineral oil never actually fully dries or hardens or cures so I think it's a really good practice to give the board a while to breathe before sealing up the surface I have rushed the beeswax on past builds and I found the oil can sweat through the wax and things get a little greasy it's a kind of less than desirable finish and since I just couldn't decide on a suitable song to amp up this finished footage I will just keep on talking and say thank you very much for watching and I really hope you enjoyed the build please let me know what you think of the boards in the comments and if you're already subscribed I really appreciate you and if you're not subscribed I still really appreciate you but I would encourage you to get yourself subscribed there'll be a couple more videos popping up here on the screen that I think you might like and until next time please take care of yourself and I will see you in the next one
