welcome to my shop today I'm going to be building a cutting board for two of my best friend's anniversary party I thought this would be a great video to share for you guys because this is a great gift idea it's not real difficult and you can have it done pretty quickly so I will be using some walnut mahogany and maple let's get started to get strips of wood that were straight and would line up I started by using the jointer to square up one edge [Music] I used the table saw to cut the walnut into one and a half inch strips [Music] since the maple was only 3/4 of an inch thick I cut it lengthwise to the thickness of the walnut one and a quarter inches [Music] I had some issues cutting the maple and it even started to kick back so rather than push it and get hurt I decided to flip the board and start with the other side [Music] when cutting the walnut in half I should have cut them at 45 degrees as I will be doing this later anyways and it would have wasted Westwood I cut a 45 degree cut on the boards to line up the boards at a 45 degree [Music] using scrap wood I created a jig to help clamp the wood at a 45 degree angle for the glue up [Music] [Music] [Music] I used parchment paper to keep the glue from sticking to the jig [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I clamped as best as I could [Music] using the miter saw I cleaned up my 45-degree edge [Music] if I did this again I would run this edge through the jointer at this point to get a truly flat edge using the table saw I cut it into 1-inch strips [Music] not sure if this was necessary but I cut off the excess pieces so it wouldn't fling back when using the table saw [Music] [Music] I used the belt sander with sixty grit sandpaper to thickness plane the wood rather than a planer because the wood grains were running in all different directions and I wanted to minimize chip out [Music] to make sure the wood lined up I laid out the wood as it fit together and then turned over alternating pieces [Music] [Music] [Music] I applied wood glue and lined up the wood grains to make the chevron pattern [Music] I clamped the wood making sure to wipe off extra glue just to help with cleanup later I also used a 2x4 to make sure none of the pieces popped up during clamping [Music] I cut off the excess on the two ends [Music] after letting the glue dry overnight I used the drum sander again to smooth out the top and bottom I used a one-eighth inch roundover bit on my router to add a nice finished look to the edges [Music] I measured out where I wanted the finger grips and set up stops on the router table [Music] using a 1/2 by 3/4 inch cove in it I cut the grips [Music] I started by cutting the end of the finger grips to prevent tear-out I sand it first with 80 grit sandpaper this took the longest to get out the saw marks and burnt wood I then moved to 100 150 and 244 [Music] I put water on the cutting board to raise up the green and then I let it dry this is to prevent it from being rough the first time it's washed using my fancy sanding pad that prevents the side facing down from getting scratched I sanded with 320 and 400 grit I applied about six coats of mineral oil over two days whenever it looked dried I finished by applying Odie's oil and buffing as directed to make sure I got the feet aligned correctly I made a jig [Music] i pre-drilled to prevent the wood from cracking [Music] [Music] thank you for watching and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss out on future bills [Music]
