in this video i am going to save you some money it's possible that you don't need to go out and spend an absolute fortune on another apple computer to improve your video editing performance i'm going to show you eight ways to improve your video editing performance in final cut pro and i'm going to show you two ways that in our experience make no difference whatsoever one of those will again save you some money so do stay tuned to the end of the [Music] video by default background rendering is switched on when you start final cut pro you can see this here when the computer's not otherwise engaged it will be trying to render out the effects that you've put on your footage but this consumes an enormous amount of cpu power and indeed gpu power from the graphics cards go up to preferences slide across to playback and uncheck that background render box we don't need to always be rendering out the entire timeline it's just completely unnecessary if on the other hand you do have a piece that the computer can't handle like this motion blur effect on a time remapping piece select it press option r and render that portion of the timeline individually it saves unnecessarily rendering the entire timeline at all times if possible apply all your effects at the end of the edit do the rough cut first if you look at the standard piece of footage that's playing it's consuming about 25 of the cpu capacity now all we need to do is add the simple title and i couldn't believe it when i did the test look at this the cpu is now running at full 100 of cpu capacity if we look at the gpu performance the graphics card and the load placed on that you'll see that there's also a bump up when we applied that title if the creative juices are flowing and you do want to do it there and then just select the title in this instance and press v to switch it off you can switch it back on come the time of export on the other hand if you have an effects laden clip like this one simply go up to the effects that you've put on and switch them off again switch them back on at the time of export you've got a stunning drone shot like this one but you feel it's dropping frames during editing go up to that drop down view tab and you can alternate between better quality and better performance for playback during editing in this example you'll see that better performance does of course deteriorate the quality of the image being played back but it's smoother the better quality shot on the left there did have some dropped frames at the start having other applications running in the background might not consume huge amounts of cpu or gpu resource whilst idle but they might still be consuming lots of ram as you can see here with the photo editors luminar 4 and lightroom classic this macbook pro has 16 gigabytes of ram and at no point in our tests did we actually find a ram bottleneck but not all computers have 16 gigs if you're running with eight gigs then you're probably going to want to make sure your other applications are switched off i'm normally pretty slow to upgrade my final cut but in october 2019 apple released a new metal metal-based engine version of the software to supposedly improve playback accelerate graphics tasks including rendering real-time effects and exporting on metal compatible mac computers the theory behind this is allows the software to bypass the cpu and go straight to the gpu for efficiency gains of up to 20 percent now i haven't done the before and after tests myself i've seen others confirm that you can expect efficiency gains of roughly 10 to 20 percent macbook pros from 2012 onwards have metal enabled graphics cards but you can follow the steps here if you want to check your own system another lovely drone shot here that was color graded with the help of this vector scope down in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen now they're essential for color grading and color correction but if you're not using them switch them off as you can see here with them switched on the cpu is running at 72 percent but with them switched off the cpu is running at 46 i do apologize for interrupting folks but these ludicrously expensive shiny computers don't pay for themselves so like many youtubers we bring your attention to certain products and services we think will be of interest to you so today we are going to talk briefly about epidemic sound it's our source of royalty-free music and sound effects we've tried loads of these companies because it's quite a competitive marketplace now and we have settled on epidemic sound huge selection of music and sound effects good quality i hasten to add and certainly for youtube creators there's a license in there that's quite cheap and quite affordable and i think it's probably best value amongst most of the competitors and we recommend it to you there's a link in the description below i believe you get a one month free trial and maybe even one month free if you sign up do check out the details epidemic sound cameras nowadays like gopros dji drones the 10-bit color profile that's available on this panasonic lumix gh5 that's filming me now utilize an h.265 high efficiency video codec which is great for better compression and smaller file sizes but it can be quite hard going on your computer the clip we're watching now is an h.264 shot and you can see it's consuming about 27 gpu switching now to an h.265 clip we do see a small jump in the cpu usage and the gpu usage it's not huge because we have a very powerful computer here but if your computer's not so powerful it could be an issue pre-2016 macbook pros did not have hardware support for the h.265 codec so our mid-2015 macbook pros had an absolute nightmare dealing with h.265 footage from our mavic 2 pro drones for example especially when you started adding some effects we're just trying to scrub through it like you would with any other piece of footage to make matters worse final cut pro only incorporated the h.265 codec in december 2017. now things have moved on but this could still be an issue for you so if you're wondering why you're having trouble it could be that check your camera settings one surefire way to get better performance from final cut pro is to take advantage of proxy media the software creates half resolution files that are used for the purposes of playback and editing and then at the time of export the original media is pulled back in for a full resolution export you can create the proxy media at the time of import as you can see here by ticking the little box alternatively you can proxy on a file by file basis by going to file transcode media and ticking that little create proxy media box once you've done this go up to view and you will see you can alternate playback between optimized and original media or proxy media click proxy media and you are good to go the downsides to creating proxy media are that it does take some time for the computer to create those proxy files it uses up a fair bit extra hard drive space and the practical one that i found a little bit annoying over time was much as you can proxy files on an individual basis you can't mix and match proxy and original files on your timeline so if you want to view a project that does feature some proxy media in reality you have to proxy all the files in that project and that can be quite time consuming i take it you're wondering where i got this incredibly snazzy t-shirt from bit of an in-joke here on the channel pointy mountain this is of course what's technically known as the pointy mountain in the scottish highlands features heavily in our work and now immortalized in our t-shirt designs well there's a link to these amazing snazzy garments down below so do check that out in our merch shelf let's talk about the two things that i personally have not found to make any difference when it comes to speeding up the performance of final cut pro first up the storage location of your video files does not matter whether you have them on a super fast hard drive like the sandisk extreme pro external hard drive or whether you have them on a slower mechanical hard drive here like this western digital my passport it doesn't matter this hard drive is 10 times faster than this one we could not construct a scenario whereby that made any difference second of all in the same way that you can create proxy media you can also create optimized media when you import your footage or you can do it on a file by file basis now according to apple optimized media transcodes video to the apple prores 422 codec format which provides better performance during editing faster render times and better color quality for compositing sounds excellent so i rendered this original h.265 clip from a mavic 2 pro and it took 46 seconds i then repeated that task after having optimized the clip and it took 1 minute and 8 seconds surely i made a mistake so i rendered this other clip straight out of the drone the native h265 codec and it took 33 seconds same clip being rendered this time optimized and it took 43 seconds now i'm not entirely sure what's going on here but the fact that the optimized clip is four times the size of the original clip cannot be helping watch the cpu usage here we're playing the standard clip straight out of the drone 40 load on the cpu now we switch to the optimized clip boom 230 load on the cpu if you've had a different experience using optimized media with final cut pro then please do let me know i'd love to know what's going on here but at the very least if you're new to this then test it first before you just blindly create enormous amounts of optimized media it might not be doing you any favors right oh do let me know what you think of those tips and if you have any additional ones please do leave them in the comments below we've got a lovely community here on the channel a good exchange of ideas down in the comments it's a friendly place to be so please do join us grab yourself a copy of our video editing software purchasing guide so you can learn a bit more about this topic what else do i have to sell you oh we have a sponsor as you know epidemic sound the best place for royalty-free music and if you want to look as trendy as me grab yourself a t-shirt from the merch shelf down below oh my goodness the things we have to do just to try and pay some bills right so we will see you next time [Music]
