hey how's it going Parker wall back here with full-time filemaker.com and today I'm gonna be taking you through my entire Premiere Pro editing workflow from beginning to end using an eight step process and because of all the organic traffic that I've sent over to Adobe over the years they wanted to return the favor so they were kind enough to sponsor this video so big thanks to Adobe for supporting our team of full-time filmmaker but let's now dive in to my full editing workflow so I just got done shooting a two-minute commercial for a local business and I'm now going to walk you through my full editing process from beginning to end showing you a condensed and simplified version of how I would go about editing together a commercial to be used as a website header or social media ad now if you'd like to see an uncondensed version of my workflow link is in the description to a 4-hour mini course deep diving into my full editing workflow in Premiere Pro also make sure to check out Adobe's YouTube playlist where you can see more Premiere Pro tutorials just like these covering specific topics more in depth link is in the description below but without further ado let's now dive in step number one is to import and prepare the footage that is going to be edited so let's first open up our premiere pro application let's create a new project gonna call this golf loft commercial choose my location to save it to hit OK and we are ready to go come down here bottom left for us as import media to start so we'll double click here this is my 1dx mark 3 footage some screen recordings and audio click import give it a minute and so next step I like to take here is to convert all my frame rates to the frame rate in which I will be exporting out the final video which in this case and in almost every case is going to be 23.976 you see most of my clips were shot on that frame rate but you see I shot 30 frames on a few occasions and 60 frames on a few occasions for some slow-motion options so I'm gonna highlight now I'll right-click come up to modify interpret footage click on assume this frame rate and then type in 23.976 and that now converts all of my clips to the same frame rate which in essence just slows all of those Clips down to slow motion next up that I like to take is to bring all of my footage into my timeline where I then like to cut and edit from the timeline to come up to file new sequence then I'm gonna create the settings for your timeline in my case I'm going to be doing 20 3.97 six frames per second and click on settings I'm gonna change the resolution to three eight four zero by 2160 which is ultra HD or a sixteen by nine version of 4k and hit OK I'll come grab all my clips in my project bin and drag them onto the timeline when this pops up I'm gonna say keep existing settings and we're now ready for step two which is choosing selects on the timeline or the sifting process of choosing what stays and what goes when it's a commercial hopefully you've pre-planned this a little and I have I had a shot list so the sifting process should go by quicker so we have an hour of footage and we need to whittle it down to a two minute ad and a 1-minute ad will make two versions of this and there's a couple ways you can do this sifting process I personally like to see it all laid out on the timeline and then just cut through each one as I go down the timeline so my process would go like this I do min nice and tight on this one clip I'd hold down my mouse grabbing my cursor to find my end points and hit e for add edits and then f2 deletes and scroll to your out points and then again to add edits click on the rest and f2 deletes and one tip to know at this point our playback is a little bit choppy and that's because we are using a 4k 10 bit log file from our Canon 1dx mark 3 it's got a super tough codec for premiere to read and so to improve playback you can either create proxies which I rarely do but that's what a lot of people opt to do or I come up here and toggle my resolution down I usually add it in half resolution so we continue this process for the rest of our clips now I know from the footage I shot that I did four or five takes of this and my last take was probably my favorite so we're gonna go to the very last take get her in and out points and I would delete the rest before that assuming I like that as my best take no ever next scene that I shot several times as well several takes so we're gonna go to what I thought was the best take probably the last take get our end points delete everything before that go to our out points and delete the rest and basically just trying to whittle away at the unusable stuff so we're only keeping all the usable footage on the timeline so I'll just continue that process until I've cut through all of the clips well fast-forward through that takes about an hour or two and then we'll move onto the next step we have on our timeline now 6 minutes of what I would call usable footage this is where the fun part starts or we get to actually start building our story on the timeline and the first step that I usually take when building a story is I like to bring in my music decide what music I'm gonna use and in this case bring in the voice-over as well because the voice-over is gonna kind of carry the story and help us decide which clips are gonna go where have her voice over set ready to go now we are going to bring in our music options so I'll bring all of those in to the timeline here I'm gonna go through listen to each song while watching the video and listening to the voice-over to see which one has the best vibe that I think complements both the voiceover and the visuals the best so let's mute all of these and start with our first song welcome to the doll flight welcome to the doll flop okay I'm thinking I like our second option the best now the next issue is this song is two and a half minutes and we need to make a one-minute version of the song now that is my song that I've now customized to be one minute long we are now ready to start chopping through the footage and compiling a story to that voice over and to that music so our opening shot here lets him walking into the golf loft and I'm gonna right click apply default transition and give us crossfade to match the music welcome to the golf loft and I think I'm gonna cut on that first beats we'd cut potentially to maybe just a jump cut I'm setting his clubs down perhaps flopped a tube a private golf simulating next he gets his glove on off simulating experience located in south cut on that beat again right as he grabs the club and I always try and cut on action so you notice he's pulling the club let's cut on that action where possible again cutting off of his back coming into screen helps to be a little more seamless to see how that looks located in South Jordan Utah okay now let's see how this shot works with it coming next being track mentors with that sport duo late our text when I say radar I'm thinking I want shot of the actual radar such as total yardage carry yardage so we have a little discrepancy the music has just hit the big beat where I won the first swing to be but our footage isn't quite ready for that yet so we might need to speed up some part of this here I'm thinking we just need to shorten this clip here this is what's kind of dragging us out too long part of matching to the music and the pacing is sometimes adding a speed ramp here and there to kind of make Clips go a little bit quicker but still cut on the spots we want them so for example this shot here it in South Jordan Utah you quit that speed ramp this clip out and then speed ramp into this clip and we do that by clicking on this coming up to effect control time remap select the keyframe points we're gonna extend this out separate from the audio and then we're gonna raise this up 200% and then slowly have that come in maybe 250% a little bit quicker there we go until it matches on that cut I'll see how that looks now stored in Utah equipped with it looks a little funny I think it starts a little too soon so let's push that back a bit that might be better and then do the same thing on this end so again put our keyframe and then the rest of this we're gonna speed up to the same speed again just ramped that down Utah equipped with industry-leading and let's try and cut to this guy see how that looks South Jordan Utah equipped with industry-leading track man tours that sport duo made our technology porting so that's not my favorite cut so far going from this screen to there maybe if we include some movements so this is another way to help things cut a little bit better if we're gonna do a digital zoom here and if you've already done time remapping you can't do digital zoom and time remapping on the same clip so you're gonna have to nest it first by clicking N and then grabbing position and scale keyframes sliding those over far right zooming in to where you want the clip to end equipped with industry-leading will do the same thing to this I'm just gonna copy and pastes will do motion and that will give me the same amount of zoom in and maybe again on this clip okay so let's see how we're looking so far it's out Jordan Utah equipped with industry-leading track man tours that sport dual radar technology so maybe we do a clip of this one where I see the golfer in the background prepping to shoot let's see potentially if that one would work well there same thing we're going to give us some nice motion this now this be leading track man tours that sport dual radar technology pouring and let's get ourselves a swing so go and chop that there let's try this clipping here see how she looks technology for incredibly accurate Club involved it I have tons of shots of them swinging I may use a different one here alright so we found another clip that we might like better could also do a similar and for the sake of time we'll fast forward through building out the rest of the story but basically I'm just listening to what the voice-over is saying and finding visuals to match and then cutting to the beat of the music and adding speed ramps or digital zooms where they help the Edit flow together more seamlessly and final part of the vid is going to be a golf loft logo so let's throw in the logo at the end now for schedule a free one-hour session today alrighty so there you have a folks that is the story built out on the timeline next step is going to be to color correct all the footage as you can see it's all log not looking super pretty yet step number one is gonna be to come up here to the color tab and I like to pull up my luma tree scopes and again this is C log footage on the Canon 1dx mark 3 and this would be my process for color correcting keep in mind color correcting is different than grading grading is creating a specific look while correcting is just getting our exposure and colors correct to what the natural eye would see so first thing with log footage I usually do is just bring that contrast all the way up and you see that expands our waveform and pushes our black closer to black and our whites closer to white the goal over here though is gonna be to try and keep anything from touching a hundred unless it's a blown out light then obviously those are gonna be blown out and keep anything from touching zero which is completely black but I do want to get as close as we can to those to utilize all the dynamic range that we shot with so next I'm gonna pull my blacks down until we just about touch the bottom there and our whites are already touching the top now highlights and shadows kind of comes down to preference of how contrasting you want this image to look a little less contrast so we can bring up those shadows a bit and those highlights down a little bit here's the before and after so far now last thing I want to check are my whites these walls are white they were white in real life so they should be white here I'm gonna get my selector here and just click on the white to give me a starting point so it brought down that temperature a little bit and that tint up a little bit but sometimes it doesn't select exactly what you want and you just want to come in and manually put that right where you think is the best look for you if you want a little bit cooler or a little bit warmer so looking at our clip as a whole feeling pretty good about that color correction here's the before and after probably the last thing is I might want to throw in a little bit more saturation in there before and after on a little extra color that's pretty much it for color correction that was what I saw with my eye next we'll be applying that same color correction to the rest of the clips and then shot matching to make sure that all the clips have the same exposure and colors throughout the whole video so that is our process for color correcting all right so for the color grading process I like to just stylize the footage a little bit more and give it more of a look and we'll start by coming into our project then up to file new adjustment layer hit OK and then drag that adjustment layer onto your timeline above all of your clips stretch it out across the entire timeline and then we're gonna add our color grade to that adjustment layer now you don't have to use a lot but this would be the time to use a lot so we're gonna close our basic correction and come in to creative and for a lot of the projects I do I like to add just a little bit of orange until not over-the-top but just a little bit of complementary colors going in there so we'll come into my personal lut that you guys can buy off of lüt a PHY or if you're a member of the FTF course it's included for free so let's put that on there and you see the gray that instantly gets applied this is a personal preference thing you may hate the look altogether I like it there's the before and after so that's it for the creative tab next I come into curves and I want to make this look a little more poppy it's generally my style so I'm just gonna add a little curve to add a tad more contrast now coming down to hue versus saturation first I protect my skin tones which lie between there and there approximately that I'm just gonna play with my greens and my blues independently here for this video specifically I want to bring up the saturation of my greens a little bit more because we have a lot of green in the image and then blues I actually think I want to desaturate just a little bit and then hue versus hue same thing gonna protect my skin tones there with my greens typically with an orange and teal look you're gonna make these more orangie but for the sake of this video or green is an important color for us I'm actually gonna bring back a little bit of that green and blue I'm just gonna push even a little bit more to the teal side and that's pretty much all I would do in the curves tab so here's the before and after so I'm pretty happy with that color great now it's just a matter of going through each individual clip and making sure we don't even make any specific tweaks to any one clip that might be a little bit different than another so there you have it for a color grade all of our visuals should match everything should have a consistent exposure consistent colors throughout so visuals should be done now it's time to focus on the audio so let's come over here to our audio tab now unless isolate just our voiceover first welcome to the golf loft a tube a private and so first thing I'm noticing is I'm hearing a little bit of plosive of the microphone that's a deep and noise and so what I would do first is click on this clip coming to my effects and I'm gonna throw on a parametric equalizer and then shift over to my effects control hit edit and I'm going to add a high-pass filter just like that I also want to just throw up our high end at add make the voice pop a little bit more kind of like adding contrast to audio tube a private golf simulating experience and then once I've played with EQ the last thing I usually do is throw on an effect call dynamics come - edits and I usually throw on a soft compression preset adjust the makeup gain as needed and then just add a limiter to make sure that nothing is peeking and all that does is basically level out all of the audio so that the highs are a little bit lower and the lows are a little bit higher next we're just gonna come down to our song track and mix the music to a point where it's loud enough we can hear it but not too loud to where it's drowning out the voice last thing with audio is now I'm going to sound design it feels a little bit empty with just a voice and music he's hitting balls and you're not hearing anything so you want to make sure you're matching anything you see visually with some kind of audio stimulation to make the viewer feel like they're actually there right so first thing I like to do is if I captured some decent audio I'll first play that audio the in-camera audio to see if there's anything usable sometimes there is sometimes there isn't so after going through the audio I think some of the hits could work we'll just try this one for example yeah that could potentially work it's gonna gradually have these sounds come in and out so now I'm just matching the volume of each sound effects so that it's loud enough to hear over the voice and music but not so loud that it overpowers them so I want a sound of him hitting the screen this isn't the right sound but let's see how it sounds next to that specific visual equipped with industries from that down a little bit clipped with industry-leading track man yeah sure sounds good and we're not gonna show the full process here but basically I go through the entire video mixing in a variety of sound effects either captured in camera or from sound effects libraries that I own enhancing as many of the visuals as we can with some audio and then adjusting the volumes of each sound so that you can hear it well without a sounding too loud compared to the music and voiceover now last step to finishing up our audio sometimes I forget to do this don't forget that we used a watermark version of the song so we need to replace that with a purchase license version of the song alright so that's pretty much it for sound effects sound design audio mixing our video is starting to look and sound pretty much complete the last thing I want to do it just throw on some titles or graphics or anything extra just to give it a little fine-tune finish I'm thinking I might want to do some light leaks so for light leaks I like to use illuminate light leaks also lens distortion has somewhat I like as well let's look for a pulse one here yeah something like that boom so for the light leaks we're gonna go back into editing then I appeared to opacity go to screen and then turn down the opacity until we like it welcome to the know if I'm liking the light leak idea do something like just punch in for a minute here something like that welcome to the golf flopped a tube ap that kind of breaks up that long clip of him just walking Knology poor incredibly accurate club and I might want to have some kind of light League pulse right there club and ball down the last thing I want to do is I mentioned my voiceover saying it's in 30 minutes if playing solo or bring a friend and do 18 holes in less than an hour so I want to put on screen those numbers so have a bunch of title animations I talked about this a lot I get them from story blocks video open up the animation and after-effects find the one I like do this one change our text and then we'll go ahead and export that out RGB + alpha okay name it render come back into premiere throw it on top in less than 30 minutes if playing solo or bring a friend and do 18 holes on less than an hour alright we're now gonna throw in a few more titles just like that so I came back into our title animation presets picked another one that I like to change the text what I wanted and now we're gonna plop that into our timeline I'm gonna put it over here make a little shorter let's your shots dialed in you can play over then I want one more title on this clip except I want it to be a call out animation but because this clip has motion the call-out doesn't stay on the radar so we have to animate the position of that call out by keyframing our position going to our beginning point putting on the radar then go to the out points and readjust the position might need to put a few more keyframes in the middle to keep it on the center of the whole time and this is your final result you will radar technology for incredibly alright so that pretty much wraps it up for doing any extra titles graphics and all that extra curricular stuff we are now ready to export our final video come up to file export media and because this is all shot in 4k we're gonna finish it in 4k so YouTube's 4k Ultra HD save export and there you have it so there you have it guys that is my entire workflow in Premiere Pro from beginning to end obviously that was a condensed version there's a full more in-depth version that I'll link to in the description for our mini course teaching you all the ins and outs different effects different situations different color grading options and ultimately how to become quicker and more proficient as I always tell people that if you can it twice as fast and he can take twice as many gigs and make twice as much money also if you'd like to see my pre-production process my production process and my distribution process for this commercial I just edited we have a new mini course called commercial video Pro we'll also link that in the description and yes all of my mini courses are a part of the bigger course full-time filmmaker the ultimate online film school with 300 plus tutorials and growing link to that in the description as well but that's it guys hopefully you enjoyed that video hopefully it was helpful don't forget to subscribe for more content just like this and if you have any further
